A Physical Model Enhanced Data Driven Method for High-Resolution Residential Load Profile Generation

Residential buildings account for significant energy consumption, creating opportunities to offer grid services. As electric utilities seek to implement effective system operation strategies, understanding residential energy consumption patterns becomes essential; However, the time intervals of load profiles measured by utilities' smart meters are typically from 15 minutes to 60 minutes. The low-resolution data make it hard to extract appliance-level load information, which is critical for providing grid services. This paper presents a load profile generator designed to produce synthetic load profiles for residential buildings that emphasizes the importance of accurate representations of realistic energy consumption patterns. The generator takes realistic low-resolution residential load measurements and weather data as inputs, producing 1-minute interval profiles that match the characteristics of the original profiles. Further, this generator can be used to populate load profiles in areas where actual measurements are limited to improve the ability of utilities to analyze their distribution systems. By providing more high-resolution residential building load profiles, this tool supports electric utilities to enhance their residential building load control strategies and improve overall grid stability.

Towards a More Predictive Framework for Laser-Driven Particle Sources through Experimental Data-Informed Models

Laser-driven particle acceleration (LDPA) has emerged as a critical technology for high-energydensity physics applications since its discovery at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory twenty years ago. However, realizing the full potential of these particle sources requires understanding the fundamental acceleration mechanisms and developing enhanced target designs for improved performance. This research addressed the need for controllable, high-performance laser-driven proton sources through two complementary approaches: experimentally investigating sheath field dynamics in multi-picosecond laser regimes and developing novel three-dimensional printed microstructured targets to achieve enhanced particle acceleration.

MINLP for regularized symbolic regression with applications to data-driven modeling of critical minerals processes

The poster summarizes recent advances in symbolic regression developed as part of the PrOMMiS project over the past year. In particular, it describes the comparison of surrogates for critical minerals (CM) & rare earth element (REE) recovery flowsheets obtained via symbolic regression and ALAMO. It also compares the predictive ability and solvability of optimization models that incorporate these surrogates.

Investigation of the impact of supplemental reflective films to improve micro-light climate within tomato plant canopy in solar greenhouses

The non-uniform growth and development of crops within Chinese Solar Greenhouses (CSG) is directly related to the micro-light climate within canopy. In practice, reflective films are used to improve micro-light climate within plant canopy by homogenizing light distribution and so increasing total plant light interception. However, as to our knowledge, the contributions to light distribution within canopy have not been investigated for passive reflector like reflective films. Field experiments dealing with light conditions and growth behavior over time, are complicated to carry out, time-consuming and hard to control, while however, accurate measurements of how reflective films influence the micro-light climate of canopy are an essential step to improve the growth conditions for any crop. Here, we propose a supplementary light strategy using reflective films to improve light distribution within plant canopy. Based on the example of CSG, a 3D greenhouse model including a detailed 3D tomato canopy structure was constructed to simulate the influence of supplementary reflective films to improve micro-light climate. Comparison of measured solar radiation intensity with predicted model data demonstrated that the model could precisely predict light radiation intensity over time with different time points and positions in the greenhouse. A series of reflective film configurations were investigated based on features analysis of light distribution in the tomato canopy on sunny days using the proposed model. The reflective film configuration scheme with the highest impact significantly improved the evenness of horizontal and vertical light distribution in tomato canopy. The strategy provided here can be used to configure reflective films that will enhance light conditions in CSG, which can be applied and extended in different scenarios.

Towards Fast and Accurate Predictions of Radio Frequency Power Deposition and Current Profile via Data-driven Modeling

Three machine learning techniques (multilayer perceptron, random forest, and Gaussian process) provide fast surrogate models for lower hybrid current drive (LHCD) simulations. A single GENRAY/CQL3D simulation without radial diffusion of fast electrons requires several minutes of wall-clock time to complete, which is acceptable for many purposes, but too slow for integrated modeling and real-time control applications. The machine learning models use a database of 16,000+ GENRAY/CQL3D simulations for training, validation, and testing. Latin hypercube sampling methods ensure that the database covers the range of 9 input parameters ($n_{e0}$, $T_{e0}$, $I_p$, $B_t$, $R_0$, $n_{||}$, $Z_{eff}$, $V_{loop}$, $P_{LHCD}$) with sufficient density in all regions of parameter space. The surrogate models reduce the inference time from minutes to ~ms with high accuracy across the input parameter space.

Data-driven model generation for deception defence of cyber-physical environments

Cyber-physical systems have the potential to greatly improve both the economic and the environmental efficiency of our current infrastructure. However, the necessary fusing of the cyber world with the physical world that results from these technologies also creates a host of new attack opportunities. In this work, we discuss how deception can be employed to effectively defend these systems.
