Conceptual Final Paper on the Preliminary Design of an Oblique Flying Wing SST

A conceptual Oblique Flying Wing Supersonic Transport Aircraft (OFW, or surfplane because of its shape) was first proposed in 1957. It was reintroduced in 1987 in view of the emerging technology of artificial stabilization. This paper is based on the performance and economics study of an M2 B747-100B replacement aircraft. In order to make a fair comparison of this configuration with the B747, an end-sixties structural technology level is assumed. It is shown that a modern stability and control system can balance the aircraft and smooth out gusts, and that the OFW configuration equals or outperforms the B747 in speed, economy and comfort.

An exactly solvable model for calculating critical misfit and thickness in epitaxial superlattices - Layers of equal elastic constants and thicknesses

A parabolic interaction potential has been used to develop a model for calculating the misfit dislocation (MD) energy in the case of a superlattice of alternating layers of materials with equal elastic constants and thicknesses. The model, which is believed to be a good one for small misfits and to have some merit for covalent bonded materials, is exactly solvable for the critical thickness above which it is energetically favorable to lose coherency by the introduction of MDs into the interfaces. It was found, for a given misfit f, that the critical thickness for epitaxial superlattices free from their substrate is somewhat more than four times that for a single epilayer on a thick substrate. Furthermore, the critical thickness varies almost inversely with misfit to the power 1.22 when Poisson's ratio is 1/3. It was also shown that the critical misfit f(c) obtained by equating maximal misfit strain and MD energies is a significant overestimate of f(c). The results for a superlattice are compared with those of a thin layer on a thick substrate.

Quasi-periodic oscillations in the bright Galactic bulge X-ray source GX 340 + 0

Quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) have been detected in the X-ray flux of the bright Galactic bulge X-ray source GX 340+0. The QPO, the associated red noise, and their relation to the spectral state of the source are described. The QPO behavior is found to be similar to that seen in Cyg X-2 and GX 5-1.

4U 1626-67 - The binary with the smallest known mass function

The pulsing X-ray source 4U 1626-67 is an accreting neutron star in a binary system with a very low mass companion. The source was observed by Exosat continuously for 23 hr on March 30-31, 1986 UT. It is found that, if the orbital inclination angle equals 90 deg, the optical companion star has a mass of less than about 0.002 solar mass; however, it is found that a companion star mass of greater than about 0.06 solar mass is required if gravitational radiation is responsible for driving the mass transfer in this system. Also presented are results on flaring activity in the system on time scales of about 1000 s, the energy-dependent pulse profiles, and the pulse period history over the past decade.

A review of quasi-periodic oscillations in low-mass X-ray binaries

A review of the quasi-periodic oscillations (QPO) observed in the X-ray flux of low-mass X-ray binaries is presented. In Section 1 a general background is given on galactic populations of accretion-driven X-ray sources. Section 2 contains a description of the methods that have been used to analyze these QPO. In Section 3 the QPO observations are described in some detail. Models for the QPO are considered in Section 4. In Section 5 the time lags observed between QPO at different photon energies and their possible implications for X-ray spectral models are discussed. Conclusions are summarized in Section 6.

Higher order turbulence closure models

Theoretical models are developed and numerical studies conducted on various types of flows including both elliptic and parabolic. The purpose of this study is to find better higher order closure models for the computations of complex flows. This report summarizes three new achievements: (1) completion of the Reynolds-stress closure by developing a new pressure-strain correlation; (2) development of a parabolic code to compute jets and wakes; and, (3) application to a flow through a 180 deg turnaround duct by adopting a boundary fitted coordinate system. In the above mentioned models near-wall models are developed for pressure-strain correlation and third-moment, and incorporated into the transport equations. This addition improved the results considerably and is recommended for future computations. A new parabolic code to solve shear flows without coordinate tranformations is developed and incorporated in this study. This code uses the structure of the finite volume method to solve the governing equations implicitly. The code was validated with the experimental results available in the literature.

The prediction and confirmation of critical epitaxial parameters

The coherency-incoherency transition in epitaxial crystals is said to take place at a critical misfit f(c) or, for a system in which a monolayer is subcritical, at a critical thickness h(c). In this paper, the physical principles and models used to predict critical parameters are analyzed and put into perspective. The dependence of the relevant principles on the equilibrium-nonequilibrium conditions under which the quantities are measured in practice is stressed. The advantages and disadvantages of the models used (essentially the Frenkel-Kontorowa and Volterra models) are highlighted.

Polarimetry of four Wolf-Rayet stars

Time-dependent broadband linear polarimetric observations of four WR stars are presented. On a time basis of days, WR 3 and SR 131 displayed no polarization variability above measurement errors. The position angle of WR 3 was consistent with the polarization being mainly of interstellar origin. The polarization of WR 103 showed variations, in one night on a time scale of hours. The polarization of WR 151 showed a modulation with orbital phase that was used to derive an estimate of the WN5 and O8 star's masses, of 6 and 14 solar masses, respectively. Four phenomenological types of polarization variability are introduced, and the stars are described in terms of them.

Template-directed oligomerization catalyzed by a polynucleotide analog

A pyrophosphate-linked analog of polycytidylic acid has been synthesized and shown to catalyze the oligomerization of the complementary monomer 2'-deoxyguanosine 3',5'-bisphosphoimidazolide. Analogs of polynucleotides are of interest in studies of the origins of life as possible precursors of the first RNA molecules. These results demonstrate that such molecules are capable of serving as templates for further synthesis.

A search for quasi-periodic oscillations in 4U/MXB 1735-44

A search for quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) in 4U/MXB 1735-44 was performed using Exosat observations during which the source was in a horizontal branch of the spectral hardness-intensity diagram for about 8 hr and in a normal branch type of behavior for about 46 hr. No QPOs or low-frequency noise was found in the horizontal branch state. It is suggested that this absence is due to either low luminosity or the fact that the companion in 1735-44 is a main-sequence star.

X-ray spectroscopy of the ultrasoft transient 4U 1543 - 47

The X-ray transient 4U 1543 - 47 was observed in August 1983 by the Exosat observatory near the maximum of an outburst. The X-ray spectrum was measured using a gas scintillation proportional counter (GSPC) and a transmission grating spectrometer (TGS). A broad (FWHM about 2.7 keV) line at 5.9 keV is detected in the GSPC, which is interpreted as a redshifted and broadened iron K-alpha line. The line broadening and redshift may arise from either Compton scattering in a cool plasma with small optical depth and/or from Droppler and relativistic effects in the vicinity of compact object. The spectrum below 2 keV, obtained with the TGS, shows evidence for a broad emission feature at 0.74 keV, which may be an iron L-transition complex. However, such an emission feature could be an artifact caused by an anomalously low interstellar absorption by neutral oxygen. The contimuum emission is extremely soft and is well described by an unsaturated Comptonized spectrum from very cool plasma (kT = 0.84 keV) with large scattering depth.

Oligomerization of deoxynucleoside-biphosphate dimers - Template and linkage specificity

The oligomerization of the activated 3-prime-5-prime pyrophosphate-linked dimer, pdAppdAp, is presently noted to be selectively favored by a poly(U) template over the 3-prime-3-prime and 5-prime-5-prime linked dimers. Both overall yields and the production of the longest oligomers were markedly stimulated by poly(U)'s presence; in its absence, the 5-prime-5-prime linked dimer became the most reactive, yielding chains of the order of 60 monomer-unit lengths. Remarkable self-organization properties are noted for the 5-prime-5-prime dimer of pdAp.

Resolution experiments for NW Pacific subduction zone tomography

Results are reported from an investigation of the resolving power of ISC/NEIC P travel-time data in tomographic inversions for the geometry of the subduction zones in the NW Pacific. From thermal models for the Kurile, Janan, Izu-Bonin, Mariana, and Ryukyu slabs, three-dimensional synthetic velocity anomalies for subducting slabs are generated and projected onto a cell model for the uppermost 1400 km of the mantle. These synthetic models are used to compute synthetic delay times for ray paths corresponding to the source and receiver locations used for the actual data, add Gaussian noise, invert the synthetic data, and compare the resulting velocity structure to the initial synthetic models. This comparison is illustrated for sections through the Kuriles and the Mariana arcs. A variety of resolution artifacts are observed, which in many cases resemble features visible in the tomographic results obtained from inverting the actual ISC/NEIC data.

Quasi-periodic oscillations in GX 17 + 2

X-ray observations of GX 17 + 2 were made in March and April, 1988 with the Large Area Counter of the Ginga satellite. The source was observed in the flaring, normal, and horizontal branches. Quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) were oberved in all three of these branches. The relationship between QPO behavior and the X-ray spectral properties of GX 17 + 2 is examined. Continuous variation of QPO behavior is observed as GX 17 + 2 moves from the normal to flaring branch, indicating that the normal-branch QPO and the flaring-branch QPO are probably one physical phenomenon. This QPO behavior is similar to that observed in Sco X-1. Also, it is found that GX 17 + 2 is an example of the Z-type sources defined by Hasinger et al. (1989).

Optimal plane change by low aerodynamic forces

This paper presents the exact dimensionless equations of motion and the necessary conditions for the computation of the optimal trajectories of a hypervelocity vehicle flying through a nonrotating spherical planetary atmosphere. It is shown that there are two types of maneuvers with nearly identical plane change. In the hard maneuver, the vehicle is pulled down to low altitude for aerodyamic plane change before exit at the prescribed final speed. In the slow maneuver which is described in detail in this paper, the vehicle remains in orbital flight with a small incremental plane change during each passage through the perigee. This maneuver requires several revolutions, and the technique for computation is similar to that in the problem of contraction of orbit.

Correlation of X-ray burst properties with source state in the 'atoll' source 4U/MXB 1636 - 53

A series of Exosat observations of the 'atoll' source 4U/MXB 1636 - 53 shows that duration and temperature of the X-ray bursts strongly correlate with the X-ray spectral and fast variability characteristics of the persistent emission of the source. This implies that spectral shape, fast variability, and burst duration and temperature all correlate well with accretion rate M. This provides a strong argument that in the atoll sources, source-state is determined by M, just as in the Z sources. These observations also show that the persistent X-ray intensity can vary independently from the other mentioned characteristics. Therefore, intensity is probably not a good measure for the accretion rate.
