Kilonovae are the radioactively powered optical/IR transients following a binary neutron star or neutron star black hole merger. A broad grid (varying ejecta mass, velocity, composition) of 900 2D kilonova models were simulated with Monte Carlo on Grizzly, using MPI+OpenMP. The set of models are being compared to observation AT2017gfo (the electromagnetic counterpart of gravitational wave GW170817), and hint at potential fidelity improvements.

Plasma blobs are structures within a bulk plasma which are characterized by an increased density relative to the bulk, and movement as coherent objects across magnetic field lines. In general, ions and electrons will follow helical trajectories through a magnetic field, with direction of gyration dependent on sign of the particle’s charge, and helix gyroradius proportional to particle speed, and inversely proportional to magnetic field strength.
This report documents the digitization of figures from LA-10860-MS in order to import the data into the CritView software application. The original figures were created by Los Alamos National Laboratory and the latest revision was released in 1986. All figures were digitized using Engauge Digitizer (ver. 12.1) .
Signatures of liquid water on planetary bodies may provide evidence for past, present, or future life elsewhere in the solar system. Multiple current and upcoming planetary science missions are prioritizing the search for water, using innovative technologies and creative algorithms. For this project, we explore the capabilities of an instrument similar to the Dragonfly spacecraft to map water content on the surface of Titan, the largest moon of Saturn. We simulate Dragonfly’s neutron observations for a variety of soil compositions and develop multiple techniques to extract water content from the resultant neutron data. Additionally, we supplement neutron observations with gamma spectroscopy in an attempt to further refine water content estimates. This work is part of a larger study to employ Gaussian process regression to estimate a map of water content along the surface of Titan. Using the estimated map, an algorithm based on prediction difference mapping is employed to optimally move multiple Dragonfly detectors around the surface of Titan, fully autonomously.
Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is working with NorthStar medical Radioisotopes (NMR) on their efforts to produce Mo-99 through the irradiation of Mo-100 using Rodotron electron accelerators. Two Rhodotron accelerators are used to irradiate a double sided target. LANL collaborates with NMR to experimentally investigate beam effects on the target which consists of two Inconel 718 windows on either side of a stack of Mo-100 discs. LANL simulates the beam heating using an induction heater.
