Discovery of a layered multiferroic compound Cu 1-x Mn 1+y SiTe 3 with strong magnetoelectric coupling

Multiferroic materials host both ferroelectricity and magnetism, offering potential for magnetic memory and spin transistor applications. Here, we report a multiferroic chalcogenide semiconductor Cu 1-x Mn 1+y SiTe 3 (0.04 ≤ x ≤ 0.26; 0.03 ≤ y ≤ 0.15), which crystallizes in a polar monoclinic structure (Pm space group). It exhibits a canted antiferromagnetic state below 35 kelvin, with magnetic hysteresis and remanent magnetization under 15 kelvin. We demonstrate multiferroicity and strong magnetoelectric coupling through magnetodielectric and magnetocurrent measurements. At 10 kelvin, the magnetically induced electric polarization reaches ~0.8 microcoulombs per square centimeter, comparable to the highest value in oxide multiferroics. We also observe possible room-temperature ferroelectricity. Given that multiferroicity is very rare among transition metal chalcogenides, our finding sets up a unique materials platform for designing multiferroic chalcogenides.

The Escherichia coli MFS-type transporter genes yhjE, ydiM, and yfcJ are required to produce an active bo3 quinol oxidase

Heme-copper oxygen reductases are membrane-bound oligomeric complexes that are integral to prokaryotic and eukaryotic aerobic respiratory chains. Biogenesis of these enzymes is complex and requires coordinated assembly of the subunits and their cofactors. Some of the components are involved in the acquisition and integration of different heme and copper (Cu) cofactors into these terminal oxygen reductases. As such, MFS-type transporters of the CalT family ( e . g ., CcoA) are required for Cu import and heme-Cu B center biogenesis of the cbb 3 -type cytochrome c oxidases ( cbb 3 -Cox). However, functionally homologous Cu transporters for similar heme-Cu containing bo 3 -type quinol oxidases ( bo 3 -Qox) are unknown. Despite the occurrence of multiple MFS-type transporters, orthologs of CcoA are absent in bacteria like Escherichia coli that contain bo 3 -Qox. In this work, we identified a subset of uncharacterized MFS transporters, based on the presence of putative metal-binding residues, as likely candidates for the missing Cu transporter. Using a genetic approach, we tested whether these transporters are involved in the biogenesis of E . coli bo 3 -Qox. When respiratory growth is dependent on bo 3 -Qox, because of deletion of the bd -type Qox enzymes, three candidate genes, yhjE , ydiM , and yfcJ , were found to be critical for E . coli growth. Radioactive metal uptake assays showed that Δ ydiM has a slower 64 Cu uptake, whereas Δ yhjE accumulates reduced 55 Fe in the cell, while no similar uptake defect is associated with Δ ycfJ . Phylogenomic analyses suggest plausible roles for the YhjE, YdiM, and YfcJ transporters, and overall findings illustrate the diverse roles that the MFS-type transporters play in cellular metal homeostasis and production of active heme-Cu oxygen reductases.

Phonon-induced rotation of the electronic nematic director in superconducting Bi 2 Se 3

The doped topological insulator A x Bi 2 Se 3 , with A = {Cu,Sr,Nb}, becomes a nematic superconductor below T c ≈ 3–4 K. The associated electronic nematic director is described by an angle α and is experimentally manifested in the elliptical shape of the in-plane critical magnetic field H c2 . Because of the threefold rotational symmetry of the lattice, α is expected to align with one of three high-symmetry directions corresponding to the in-plane nearest-neighbor bonds, consistent with a Z 3 -Potts nematic transition. Here, we show that the nematic coupling to the acoustic phonons, which makes the nematic correlation length tend to diverge along certain directions only, can fundamentally alter this phenomenology in trigonal lattices. Compared to hexagonal lattices, the former possesses a sixth independent elastic constant c14 due to the fact that the in-plane shear strain doublet (ε xx – ε yy , – 2ε xy ) and the out-of-plane shear strain doublet (2ε yz , – 2ε zx ) transform as the same irreducible representation. We find that, when c 14 overcomes a threshold value, which is expected to be the case in doped Bi 2 Se 3 , the nematic director α unlocks from the high-symmetry directions due to the competition between the quadratic phonon-mediated interaction and the cubic nematic anharmonicity. This implies the breaking of the residual in-plane twofold rotational symmetry (C 2x ), resulting in a triclinic phase. Furthermore, we discuss the implications of these findings for the structure of nematic domains, for the shape of the in-plane H c2 in A x Bi 2 Se 3 , and for the presence of nodes inside the superconducting state.

Copper-containing ceramic precursor synthesis: Solid-state transformations and materials technology

Three copper systems with relevance to materials technology are discussed. In the first, a CuS precursor, Cu4S1O (4-methylpyridine)(sub 4)- (4-MePy), was prepared by three routes: reaction of Cu2S, reaction of CuBr-SMe2, and oxidation of copper powder with excess sulfur in 4-methylpyridine by sulfur. In the second, copper powder was found to react with excess thiourea (H2NC(S)NH2) in 4-methylpyridine to produce thiocyanate (NCS(-)) complexes. Three isolated and characterized compounds are: Cu(NCS)(4-MePy)(sub 2), a polymer, (4-MePy-H)(Cu(NCS)(sub 3)(4-MePy)(sub 2)), a salt, and t-Cu(NCS)(sub 2)(4-MePy)(sub 4). Finally, an attempt to produce a mixed-metal sulfide precursor of Cu and Ga in N-methylimidazole (N-MeIm) resulted in the synthesis of a Cu-containing polymer, Cu(SO4)(N-MeIm). The structures are presented; the chemistry will be briefly discussed in the context of preparation and processing of copper-containing materials for aerospace applications.

Chemical stabilization and high pressure synthesis of Ba-free Hg-based superconductors, (Hg,M)Sr2Ca(n-1)Cu(n)O(y)(n=1 to approximately 3)

A homologous series of new Hg-based HTSC compounds, (Hg,M)Sr2Ca(n - 1)Cu(n)P(y) with n = 1 to 3, have been synthesized. The stabilization of the pure phases have been accomplished by chemical doping of third elements such as M = Cr, Mo and Re. While the Hgl2O1(n = 1) phase was readily obtained in this way, it was necessary to simultaneously dope Y into the Ca site to stabilize the Hg1212(n = 2) phase. On the other hand, single-phase Y-free Hg1212(n = 2) and Hg1223 (n = 3) samples were synthesized only under a high pressure of 6 GPa. In sharp contrast to the Ba containing compounds, all the samples prepared in the present study have been quite stable during the synthesis and no deterioration in air has been observed after the preparation.

The CopA2-Type P 1B -Type ATPase CcoI Serves as Central Hub for cbb 3 -Type Cytochrome Oxidase Biogenesis

Copper (Cu)-transporting P 1B -type ATPases are ubiquitous metal transporters and crucial for maintaining Cu homeostasis in all domains of life. In bacteria, the P 1B -type ATPase CopA is required for Cu-detoxification and exports excess Cu(I) in an ATP-dependent reaction from the cytosol into the periplasm. CopA is a member of the CopA1-type ATPase family and has been biochemically and structurally characterized in detail. In contrast, less is known about members of the CopA2-type ATPase family, which are predicted to transport Cu(I) into the periplasm for cuproprotein maturation. One example is CcoI, which is required for the maturation of cbb 3 -type cytochrome oxidase (cbb 3 -Cox) in different species. Here, we reconstituted purified CcoI of Rhodobacter capsulatus into liposomes and determined Cu transport using solid-supported membrane electrophysiology. The data demonstrate ATP-dependent Cu(I) translocation by CcoI, while no transport is observed in the presence of a non-hydrolysable ATP analog. CcoI contains two cytosolically exposed N-terminal metal binding sites (N-MBSs), which are both important, but not essential for Cu delivery to cbb 3 -Cox. CcoI and cbb 3 -Cox activity assays in the presence of different Cu concentrations suggest that the glutaredoxin-like N-MBS1 is primarily involved in regulating the ATPase activity of CcoI, while the CopZ-like N-MBS2 is involved in Cu(I) acquisition. The interaction of CcoI with periplasmic Cu chaperones was analyzed by genetically fusing CcoI to the chaperone SenC. The CcoI-SenC fusion protein was fully functional in vivo and sufficient to provide Cu for cbb 3 -Cox maturation. In summary, our data demonstrate that CcoI provides the link between the cytosolic and periplasmic Cu chaperone networks during cbb 3 -Cox assembly.

Oxo dicopper anchored on carbon nitride for selective oxidation of methane

Abstract Selective conversion of methane (CH 4 ) into value-added chemicals represents a grand challenge for the efficient utilization of rising hydrocarbon sources. We report here dimeric copper centers supported on graphitic carbon nitride (denoted as Cu 2 @C 3 N 4 ) as advanced catalysts for CH 4 partial oxidation. The copper-dimer catalysts demonstrate high selectivity for partial oxidation of methane under both thermo- and photocatalytic reaction conditions, with hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) and oxygen (O 2 ) being used as the oxidizer, respectively. In particular, the photocatalytic oxidation of CH 4 with O 2 achieves >10% conversion, and >98% selectivity toward methyl oxygenates and a mass-specific activity of 1399.3 mmol g Cu −1 h −1 . Mechanistic studies reveal that the high reactivity of Cu 2 @C 3 N 4 can be ascribed to symphonic mechanisms among the bridging oxygen, the two copper sites and the semiconducting C 3 N 4 substrate, which do not only facilitate the heterolytic scission of C-H bond, but also promotes H 2 O 2 and O 2 activation in thermo- and photocatalysis, respectively.

Influence of several metal ions on the gelation activation energy of silicon tetraethoxide

The effects of nine metal cations (Li(+), Na(+), Mg(2+), Ca(2+), Sr(2+), Cu(2+), Al(3+), La(3+), and Y(3+) on silica gel formation has been investigated by studying the hydrolysis and polycondensation of silicon tetraethoxide (TEOS) in the presence of metal nitrates. The influence of water: TEOS mole ratio, metal ion concentration, and the reaction temperature has been investigated. The overall activation energy for gel formation has been determined from the temperature dependence of the time of gelation for each system. The activation energy for -Si-O-Si- network formation is found to be 54.5 kJ/mol. The gel formation time as well as the activation energy sharply increase in the presence of Cu(2+), Al(3+), La(3+) and Y(3+). In contrast, the presence of Li(+), Na(+), Mg(2+), Ca(2+), or, Sr(2+) lowers the gelation time, but has no appreciable effect on the activation energy. This difference may be attributed to the participation or nonparticipation of the metal ions in the formation of the three-dimensional polymeric network during the polycondensation step. The concentration of metal ion (Mg(2+), Ca(2+), Y(3+) or the water: TEOS mole ratio had no appreciable effect on the gelation activation energy. A simple test has been proposed to determine whether a metal ion would act as a network intermediate or modifier in silica and other glassy networks.

Improved thermoelectric performance of α- and β- Cu 2 Se through suppression of hole density using extrinsic copper vacancies

Modulating Cu + ion disorder in Cu 2 Se can enable control over the polymorphism and the carrier density leading to enhanced thermoelectric properties for both α- and β-Cu 2 Se. Here we report that the incorporation of Cr 3+ into the Cu 2 Se crystal lattice facilitates the stabilization of α-Cu 2 Se at 300 K leading to a large (~140%) reduction in the carrier density both below and above the phase transition. This is attributed to the reduction in the density of intrinsic copper interstitials (Cu$^{•}_{i}$) within the Cu (2-δ-λ) (Cr$^{··}_{Cu}$)λ(V$^{'}_{Cu}$)δ(Cu$^{π}_{i}$) δ-2λ (h • ) δ-2λ Se crystal lattice. Such optimization of the carrier density led to a large (63%) increase in the thermopower and a drastic (46%) reduction in the total thermal conductivity for both α- and β-Cu 2 Se matrices. Consequently, a significant enhancement of the thermoelectric performance is observed in the entire temperature range from 300 K to 773 K. This results in high average ZT values for both α-Cu 2 Se (ZT ave = 0.60) and β-Cu 2 Se (ZT ave = 0.97), which paves the way for both near room temperature and high temperatures applications. Furthermore, this work provides a new approach to optimize the thermoelectric performance of Cu 2 Se-based materials by leveraging the interaction between mobile intrinsic Cu$^{·}_{i}$ and extrinsic V$^{'}_{Cu}$ to suppress the hole density.

Scaling Properties of φ -Meson and Light Charged Hadron Production in Small and Large Systems at PHENIX

Recent results on the identified charged-hadron (π ± , K ± , p, p¯) production vat midrapidity region (|η| < 0.35) have been measured by the PHENIX experiment in p + Al, 3 He + Au, Cu + Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV and U + U collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 193 GeV. These measurements are presented through the invariant transverse-momentum (p T ) and transverse-mass (m T ) spectra for different collision centralities. The averaged freeze-out temperature value for different systems was found to be 166.1 ± 2.2 MeV, and do not exhibit any dependence on the collision centrality and $\langle$N parti $\rangle$ values. The particle ratios of K/π and p/π have been measured in different centrality ranges of large and small collision systems. The values of K/π ratios measured in all considered collision systems were found to be consistent with those measured in p+p collisions. Furthermore, the identified charged-hadron nuclear-modification factors (R AB ) are also presented. Enhancement of proton R AB values over meson R AB values was observed in central 3 He+Au, Cu+Au, and U+U collisions. The proton R AB values measured in p+Al collision system were found to be consistent with R AB values of Φ, π ± , K ± , and π 0 mesons, suggesting that the size of the system produced in p+Al collisions is too small for recombination to cause a noticeable increase in proton production.

Relationship between Sodium Content and Copper Activity for High Voltage Stability in O3-Type Layered Oxide Cathodes

Layered oxides with an O3 framework have attracted attention as cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries due to their high discharge capacity. Yet they are hampered for commercialization by poor cyclability due to structural instability during the sodium (de)intercalation process. The introduction of Cu in small fractions to the transition metal layers has been empirically observed to improve reversible specific capacity and cycling stability. Understanding the redox activity of Cu in O3-type Na x TMO 2 materials is crucial, as it could directly influence the charge compensation mechanism, voltage profile, and structural stability. However, the precise role of Cu in O3-type sodium cathodes under high-voltage cycling conditions (>4.1 V) remains insufficiently understood. To close this gap of knowledge, we studied the effect of Cu in two representative layered oxides with the same O3 stacking but different sodium stoichiometry, Na 0.9 Mn 1/2 Fe 1/3 Cu 1/6 O 2 and NaMn 1/2 Fe 1/3 Cu 1/6 O 2 . X-ray spectroscopy reveals that in Na 0.9 Mn 1/2 Fe 1/3 Cu 1/6 O 2 , Cu exhibits dual redox activity, Cu + /Cu 2+ in the pristine state and Cu 2+ /Cu 3+ upon charging in the sodium-deficient material, whereas only the Cu + /Cu 2+ redox couple is observed in the fully stoichiometric layered oxide. Furthermore, the results indicate that even a slight deficiency in sodium can significantly impact the electrochemical performance and material stability and alter the elemental redox activity of Cu.
