Unravelling a long-lived ligand-to-metal cluster charge transfer state in Ce–TCPP metal organic frameworks

Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as promising photocatalytic materials for solar energy conversion. However, a fundamental understanding of light harvesting and charge separation (CS) dynamics in MOFs remains underexplored, yet they are key factors that determine the efficiency of photocatalysis. In this work, we report the design and CS dynamics of the Ce–TCPP MOF using ultrafast spectroscopic methods.

Quantum chemical topology and natural bond orbital analysis of M–O covalency in M(OC 6 H 5 ) 4 (M = Ti, Zr, Hf, Ce, Th, Pa, U, Np)

Covalency is complex yet central to our understanding of chemical bonding, particularly in the actinide series. In this work, we assess covalency in a series of isostructural d and f transition element compounds M(OC 6 H 5 ) 4 (M = Ti, Zr, Hf, Ce, Th, Pa, U, Np) using scalar relativistic hybrid density functional theory in conjunction with the Natural Bond Orbital (NBO), quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) and interacting quantum atoms (IQA) approaches. The IQA exchange–correlation covalency metric is evaluated for the first time for actinides other than uranium, in order to assess its applicability in the 5f series. It is found to have excellent correlation with NBO and QTAIM covalency metrics, making it a promising addition to the computational toolkit for analysing metal–ligand bonding. Our range of metrics agree that the actinide-oxygen bonds are the most covalent of the elements studied, with those of the heavier group 4 elements the least. Within the early actinide series, Th stands apart from the other three elements considered, being consistently the least covalent.

Probing the proton exchange kinetics of BaZr 0.1 Ce 0.7 Y 0.1 Yb 0.1 O 3− δ ceramic electrolyte by operando diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy

Proton exchange kinetics plays an important role in governing the performance of intermediate-temperature protonic ceramic electrolysis cells (PCECs) for hydrogen production. Our understanding of the nature of the surface hydration reaction at the single-cell level, however, remains very limited, hampering further efficiency improvements. Here, in this study, we developed a custom operando diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) platform that operates under high temperature and steam conditions with applied bias. Quantitative investigations of surface H 2 O/D 2 O isotope exchange in a BaZr 0.1 Ce 0.7 Y 0.1 Yb 0.1 O 3−δ (BZCYYb1711) protonic electrolyte-based single cell were conducted under different applied voltages using this DRIFTS platform, to gain molecular-level insight into hydration kinetics. The findings show that the application of an external voltage significantly enhances the surface proton exchange rate, decreasing the apparent activation energy from 29.1 kJ mol −1 at open-circuit voltage (OCV) to 6.8 kJ mol −1 at 1.3 V. In addition, distinct voltage-induced spectral shifts in O–D vibrations point to dynamic changes in surface hydration. These findings demonstrate a sensitive spectroscopic platform for probing interfacial proton processes and reveal strong electrochemical control over surface proton kinetics, offering new opportunities for probing electrolyte hydration behavior in PCECs.

Capture Cavities For The Cw Polarized Positron Source Ce + baf

The initial design of the capture cavities for the continuous wave (CW) polarized positron beams at Jefferson Lab (Ce + BAF) is presented. A chain of standing wave multi-cell copper cavities inside a solenoid tunnel are selected to improve the positron capture efficiency. The cavity design strategy is presented to accommodate constrains from the large phase distribution of the incident beams, RF power and RF heating. A matrix of design parameters’ range are given for future system optimization when the capture cavities are considered together with other sub-systems and beam dynamics. The contents will also be useful for other CW cavity design for beams with large phase space distribution.

Proton damage in (Y,Lu,Gd) 3 (Al,Ga) 5 O 12 :Ce mixed garnet scintillators

Scintillators are vital components for nuclear instrumentation and its applications, including plasma diagnostics and imaging. As yields in controlled fusion experiments increase, the radiation tolerance of scintillator candidates for use in instrumentation is of particular importance. High radiation exposure can damage scintillating materials and alter the optical properties. The effects of radiation damage in Ce-doped mixed garnet ceramics over the compositional range (Y,Gd,Lu) 3 (Al,Ga) 5 O 12 are investigated using optical techniques. The samples were exposed to 200 keV protons to an accumulated fluence of 10 16 protons per square centimeter, then characterized using diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS). DRS with visible light can assess the radiation tolerance of opaque poly-crystalline samples, which can be easily sintered from powders and thus offer distinct advantages in characterization compared to single crystals. Qualitative trends in induced absorption are presented as a function of composition, and the ideal cerium dopant concentration for Y 2 LuAl 5 O 12 is determined to be 0.60–0.75 mol.%.

Quantum criticality in Ce 1 - x Sm x Co In 5

Motivated by the possibility of observing the coexistence between magnetism and unconventional superconductivity in heavy-fermion Ce 1-x Sm x CoIn 5 alloys, we studied how the samarium substitution on the cerium site affects the magnetic field-tuned-quantum criticality of stoichiometric CeCoIn 5 by performing specific heat and resistivity measurements. By applying an external magnetic field, we have observed Fermi-liquid to non-Fermi-liquid crossovers in the temperature dependence of the electronic specific heat normalized by temperature and of the resistivity. We obtained the magnetic-field-induced quantum critical point (QCP) by extrapolating to zero temperature the temperature-magnetic field dependence at which the crossovers take place. Furthermore, a scaling analysis of the electronic specific heat is used to confirm the existence of the QCP. We have found that the magnitude of the magnetic-field-induced QCP decreases with increasing samarium concentration. Our analysis of heat capacity and resistivity data reveals a zero-field QCP for x cr ≈0.15, which falls inside the region where Sm ions antiferromagnetism and superconductivity coexist.

Local lattice distortions and electronic orders in strongly correlated systems by resonant total x-ray scattering: A case study of A Pt 2 X 2 intermetallics ( A = U , Ce, or La and X = Si or Ge)

Revealing local lattice distortions in physical systems is nontrivial, largely because such structural features often are not necessarily amenable to traditional crystallographic investigations. This poses limits to our understanding of the underlying physic, particularly in the case of strongly correlated systems where structural, electronic and magnetic degrees of freedom are intertwined. Using resonant total x-ray scattering coupled to differential pair distribution function analysis, we reveal the presence of pronounced local lattice distortions in the square net Pt planes in the prototypical strongly correlated APt 2 X 2 intermetallics (A = U, Ce or La and X = Si or Ge). The distortions are present before charge density wave, magnetic, Kondo lattice coherence and/or superconducting orders emerge in these materials and, as density functional calculations suggest, are likely to affect them. Finally, our study sheds light on the poorly known interactions between electronic orders and structural disorder in strongly correlated systems and also demonstrates an advanced experimental approach to determine it that is relevant to any physical system showing deviations from perfect crystallinity.

Excess heat capacity in magnetically ordered Ce heavy-fermion metals

Herein we study the magnetic heat capacity of a series of magnetically ordered Ce-based heavy-fermion materials, which show an anomalous T 3 heat capacity in excess of the phonon contribution in many materials. For compounds for which magnon models have been worked out, we show that the local-moment magnon heat capacity derived from the measured magnon spectra underestimates the experimental specific heat. The excess heat capacity reveals increasing density of states with increasing energy, akin to a pseudogap. We show that this anomalous temperature-dependent term is not associated with proximity to a quantum critical point, but is strongly correlated with T N , indicating the anomalous excitations are governed by the magnetic exchange interaction. This insight may hold key information for understanding magnetically ordered heavy fermions.
