Observation of a smoothly tunable Dirac point in Ge ( Bi x Sb 1 - x ) 2 Te 4

State-of-the-art topological devices require the use of topologically protected surface states to drive electronic transport. Here, we examine a tunable topological system, Ge(Bi x Sb 1-x ) 2 Te 4 , for a range of $\mathcal{x}$ values from 0 to 1, using a combination of Fourier transform scanning tunneling spectroscopy and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Our results show that the Dirac point shifts linearly with $\mathcal{x}$, crossing the Fermi energy near $\mathcal{x}$=0.7. This observation of a smoothly tunable, isolated Dirac point crossing through the topological transport regime and having strong linear dependence with substitution can be critical for future topological spintronics applications.

Highly tunable band inversion in AB 2 X 4 (A=Ge, Sn, Pb; B=As, Sb, Bi; X=Se, Te) compounds

Topological materials have been discovered so far largely by searching for existing compounds in crystallographic databases, but there are potentially new topological materials with desirable features that have not been synthesized. One of the desirable features is high tunability resulting from the band inversion with a very small direct band gap, which can be tuned by changes in pressure or strain to induce a topological phase transition. Here, using density-functional theory (DFT) calculations, we have studied the septuple layered AB 2 X 4 series compounds, where A=(Ge, Sn and Pb), B=(As, Sb and Bi), and X=(Se and Te). With the DFT thermodynamic stability validated by the already-reported compounds in these series, we predict stable Se compounds, which are not found in crystallographic database. Among them, we find that GeBi 2 Se 4 and GeSb 2 Se 4 having a small direct band gap at the Z point are very close to a strong topological insulator, which can be tuned by a moderate pressure to induce the band inversion. Importantly, the topological features with the small direct band gap are well isolated in both momentum and energy windows, which offers high tunability for studying the topological phase transition.

Ultrafast Raman probe of the photoinduced superconducting to normal state transition in the cuprate Bi 2 ⁢Sr 2 ⁢CaCu 2 ⁢O 8+𝛿

Here, we report an ultrafast Time-Resolved Raman scattering study of the out-of-equilibrium photoinduced dynamics across the superconducting to normal state phase transition of the cuprate Bi 2 ⁢Sr 2⁢ CaCu 2 ⁢O 8+𝛿 . Using the polarization-resolved momentum space selectivity of Raman scattering, we track the superconducting condensate destruction and recovery dynamics with subpicoseconds time resolution in the antinodal region of the Fermi surface where the superconducting gap is maximum. Leveraging ultrafast Raman thermometry, we find a significant dichotomy between the superconducting condensate and the quasiparticle temperature dynamics near the antinodes, which cannot be framed in terms of a single effective electron temperature. The present work demonstrates the ability of Time-Resolved Raman scattering to selectively probe out-of-equilibrium pathways of different electronic subdegrees of freedom during a photoinduced phase transition.

Structure evolution of Bi 4 O 7 under high pressure

X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy measurements were used to study the structure evolution of Bi 4 O 7 during compression. Two isostructural phase transitions were observed under high pressure, with the first transition to phase II occurring at approximately 3.0 (2) GPa and the second to phase III occurring at approximately 13.0 (5) GPa. The pressure–volume ( P – V ) curve was found to be discontinuous at those two pressure transition boundaries. By fitting the P – V curves in three different stages, the bulk moduli were estimated to be approximately 101 (2), 68 (2) and 172 (3) GPa. Such large differences in the bulk moduli confirm two isostructural phase changes in the three stages. An irreversible amorphization process was found to start at approximately 20 (1) GPa, and the sample gradually becomes fully amorphous during compression at 30 (1) GPa.

20-kW Bi-directional Wireless Power Transfer System with Energy Storage System Connectivity

The severity of the economic impact caused by grid outages has been the driving factor for creating innovative solutions that increases interest for the deployment of distributed energy resources to reduce the impact of grid outages. This study presents a novel way of providing export power using bi-directional wireless power transfer (WPT) systems for ac grid side power and mobile energy storage systems (ESSs) connectivity. The proposed concept here interfaces the EV batteries to the AC grid and also can redirect the power from the stationary ESS to grid, to EV batteries, or both simultaneously; providing the capabilities of an uninterrupted power supply (UPS). Results demonstrate the performance and the functionality of the system with overall efficiencies 93% to 97%, depending on the operating mode.

Bi-Level Linear Programming Model for Automatic Load Shedding: A Distributed Wide-Area Measurement System-based Solution

Load shedding is currently implemented as a two-step based approach. In the first step, manual load shedding is taken place, were system operators, using estimates, inform distribution utilities of predicted stressful conditions. Information provided include the potential use of energy reserves, as well as load shedding amount. In a second step, automatic load shedding is done. The latter is realized using protection relays. While considering frequency variation, pre-defined values of load to be shed and correspondent number of stages for such to be realized are transformed into relay settings. Under-frequency protection relays use only local measurements towards decision making, thus operate in a decentralized architecture. Decision making is done in milliseconds plus breaker time. While this approach has provided much system reliability, considering the new smart grid paradigm, where system dynamics are much faster due to increasing renewable resources penetration, in some operating conditions it will generate sub-optimal solutions, such as islanding. Phasor measurement units provide a source of information which can be useful for this problem. Centralized architecture-based solutions for automatic load shedding, as present in the state-of-the-art, require though total processing times which are not acceptable for real-life implementation. In this work, considering the above, a bi-level linear programming model is presented. The model is implemented considering a distributed architecture while leveraging phasor measurement units data. The upper-level model estimates the current system state. Results of this model are embedded in a lower-level model, which decision variables are the location and load value to be shed. Easy-to-implement model, built-on the classic weighted least squares solution, highlight potential aspects towards real-life applications.

Towards Smart Grids Enhanced Situation Awareness: A Bi-Level Quasi-Static State Estimation Model

Smart Grid situational awareness is provided by Energy Management Systems. A core process of these systems is State Estimation. The great majority of state estimators model the Smart Grid through a set of nonlinear algebraic equations, named the measurement model. Problem formulation considers the Gauss solution. Several model improvements have been presented regarding the Gauss solution, aiming between others to provide measurement noise robustness to the state estimation process. While considerable effort has been focused on such developments, state estimation is still constrained by the implicit modelling error, and thus inevitably vulnerable to cyber-threats. In this work, a state estimation bi-level formal model is presented towards Smart Grids enhanced situational awareness considering the concepts of synthetic measurements and innovation. Comparative test results with the state-of-the-art on the IEEE 14-bus system are presented highlighting improved situational awareness to bad data. Easy-to-implement model, without hard-to-derive parameters, built-on the classic weighted least squares solution, highlight potential aspects for real-life implementation.

Distributed Load Shedding Application Architecture and Bi-Level Predictive Estimator Algorithm

Increasing penetrations of distributed renewables are decreasing the effectiveness of traditional decentralized under-frequency load shedding (UFLS) schemes. As more distribution circuits begin to back-feed the transmission system, operation of traditional UFLS may exacerbate frequency instability. This paper presents the conceptual framework for a data-rich environment to coordinate UFLS across multiple distribution providers based on the laminar coordination framework in order to ensure optimal adaptive setting of UFLS relays. Communication and control are enabled through a distributed implementation of the IEC 61968-1 Common Information Model message bus structure. In addition to the proposed architecture, a novel adaptive UFLS scheme informed by a bi-level state estimator to create optimal relay setpoints is introduced. Initial simulation results are presented for the IEEE 14-bus test system on scenarios leading to mis-operation of traditional UFLS.

Bi-Level Adaptive Storage Expansion Strategy for Microgrids Using Deep Reinforcement Learning

Battery energy storage (BES) is a versatile resource for the secure and economic operation of microgrids (MGs). Prevailing stochastic optimization-based approaches for BES expansion planning for MGs are computationally complicated. This work proposes a data-driven bi-level multi-period BES expansion planning framework to determine the siting, sizing, and timing of BES installations. The proposed planning framework unifies deep reinforcement learning (DRL) and linear programming, thereby decoupling the determinations for the integer and continuous decision variables in two time scales, respectively. In the upper level, a rainbow DRL agent with quantile regression is trained to provide dynamic planning policies to accommodate stochastic renewable energy resources (RESs), load, and battery price changes efficiently. Further, the lower level computes the optimal operation of MGs with frequency constraints to hedge the islanding contingency. The two levels communicate with one another by exchanging storage configuration and operating expenses in order to accomplish the shared goal of minimizing investment and operation costs. Comparative case studies on an MG are carried out to demonstrate the superiority of the proposed DRL-based solution to the mixed-integer linear programming counterpart on efficiency, scalability, and adaptability.

Reliability-Informed Economic and Energy Evaluation for Bi-Level Design for Remanufacturing: A Case Study of Transmission and Hydraulic Manifold

Abstract Design for remanufacturing (DfRem) is one attractive strategy that encourages the reuse of a product and extends the product's life cycle. Traditional design processes often only consider product reliability at an early design stage. However, from the perspective of environmental sustainability, it is becoming increasingly important to evaluate the long-term economic and environmental impacts of design decisions during early-stage design. We propose a bi-level DfRem framework consisting of system-level reusability allocation and component-level design tradeoff analysis, considering reliability and product warranty policy. First, a system-level reusability allocation problem aims at a theoretical exploration of the design space where all the components comprising the system are allocated certain reuse rates to achieve target energy savings with minimum cost. Following the theoretical exploration at the system level, a component-level analysis looks at practical design options for each component and trades-off between the overall cost and energy consumption for multiple remanufacturing cycles. Both levels of the framework require modeling component reuse for multiple remanufacturing cycles, which we achieve by using a branched power-law model that provides probabilistic scenarios of reusing the component or replacing it with a new part. We demonstrate the utility of this framework with the case study of an infinitely variable transmission (IVT) used by some agricultural machines manufactured by John Deere and show snapshots of a prototype software tool that we developed for easy use by designers.

Multi-Objective Optimization of a Bi-Metal High-Temperature Recuperator for Application in Concentrating Solar Power

Supercritical CO 2 closed Brayton cycles are a major candidate for future power cycle designs in concentrating solar power applications, with high-temperature recuperators playing an essential role in realizing their high thermal efficiency. Here, printed circuit heat exchangers (PCHEs) are often chosen for this role due to their thermal-hydraulic and mechanical performance at high temperatures and pressures, all while remaining compact. However, PCHEs can be costly because of the high-performance materials demanded in these applications, and the heat exchanger internal geometry is restricted by their manufacturing process. Additively manufactured heat exchangers can address both of these shortcomings. This work proposes a modular bi-metal high-temperature recuperator with integrated headers to be produced with additive manufacturing. Beginning with existing PCHE channel geometries, a 1D heat exchanger model is developed. Then, multi-objective optimization is used to maximize the heat transfer effectiveness of a lab-scale device while limiting its size. Two distinct channel geometries emerge from the optimization. Optimal designs achieve up to 88% effectiveness with negligible pressure drop. Deterioration of effectiveness due to axial conduction of heat in the heat exchanger walls is found to be a notable problem for lab-scale PCHEs, and the optimal designs obtained here minimize its detrimental effects. A sensitivity analysis reveals that the effectiveness of the recuperator is much less sensitive to variation in mass flowrate in off-design operation when axial conduction is significant, while increasing the length of the device easily increases effectiveness.

Epitaxial growth of Bi 2 Se 3 in the (0015) orientation on GaAs (001)

Here we present that materials with van der Waals bonding show exotic physics and may have applications in a variety of areas including new optoelectronic devices, spintronic devices, and as quantum materials. To date, control over the morphology and surface orientation of thin films of these materials without substrate pretreatment has been difficult. In this paper, the authors report the growth of Bi 2 Se 3 on GaAs (001) substrates. By controlling the growth conditions and adatom mobility, the authors are able to obtain epitaxial growth in the (0015) orientation without substrate prepatterning. Although the growth window is small, this demonstration opens the door for future control of the orientation of van der Waals materials through control of parameters during growth and via interaction with the substrate.

Self-assembled nanocolumns in Bi 2 Se 3 grown by molecular beam epitaxy

Layered van der Waals (vdW) materials grown by physical vapor deposition techniques are generally assumed to have a weak interaction with the substrate during growth. This leads to films with relatively small domains that are usually triangular and a terraced morphology. In this paper, we demonstrate that Bi 2 Se 3 , a prototypical vdW material, will form a nano-column morphology when grown on GaAs(001) substrates. This morphology is explained by a relatively strong film/substrate interaction, long adatom diffusion lengths, and a high reactive selenium flux. In conclusion, this discovery paves the way toward growth of self-assembled vdW structures even in the absence of strain.

Surface deposition of nanometer scale carbon structures on Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8+δ using a low-cost scanning electron microscope

In this work, we investigate optically active nanostructures on Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8+δ (BSCCO). The nanostructures are constructed from carbon nanocrystals formed using the electron beam of a scanning electron microscope to locally decompose residual hydrocarbons at the BSCCO surface. Atomic force microscopy is used to characterize the dimensions of these structures as a function of beam exposure time. This technique has been used to induce localized intercalation to form carbon nanoparticles up to tens of nanometers into a variety of 2D materials. Cross-sectional scanning transmission electron microscopy in BSCCO shows the presence of these carbon deposits on the surface, but there is no evidence they penetrate into the BSCCO substrate. Therefore, this technique is not suitable for localized intercalation in BSCCO, and it does have promise as a cost-effective approach to pattern nanometer scale etch stops.

Achieving giant electrostrain of above 1% in (Bi,Na)TiO 3 -based lead-free piezoelectrics via introducing oxygen-defect composition

Piezoelectric ceramics have been extensively used in actuators, where the magnitude of electrostrain is key indicator for large-stroke actuation applications. Here, we propose an innovative strategy based on defect chemistry to form a defect-engineered morphotropic phase boundary and achieve a giant strain of 1.12% in lead-free Bi 0.5 Na 0.5 TiO 3 (BNT)–based ceramics. The incorporation of the hypothetical perovskite BaAlO 2.5 with nominal oxygen defect into BNT will form strongly polarized directional defect dipoles, leading to a strong pinning effect after aging. The large asymmetrical strain is mainly attributed to two factors: The defect dipoles along crystallographic [001] direction destroy the long-range ordering of the ferroelectric and activate a reversible phase transition while promoting polarization rotation when the dipoles are aligned along the applied electric field. Our results not only demonstrate the potential application of BNT-based materials in low-frequency, large-stroke actuators but also provide a general methodology to achieve large strain.

Low-energy quasi-circular electron correlations with charge order wavelength in Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8+δ

Most resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) studies of dynamic charge order correlations in the cuprates have focused on the high-symmetry directions of the copper oxide plane. However, scattering along other in-plane directions should not be ignored as it may help understand, for example, the origin of charge order correlations or the isotropic scattering resulting in strange metal behavior. Our RIXS experiments reveal dynamic charge correlations over the qx-qy scattering plane in underdoped Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8+δ . Tracking the softening of the RIXS-measured bond-stretching phonon, we show that these dynamic correlations exist at energies below approximately 70 meV and are centered around a quasi-circular manifold in the q x -q y scattering plane with radius equal to the magnitude of the charge order wave vector, q CO . This phonon-tracking procedure also allows us to rule out fluctuations of short-range directional charge order (i.e., centered around [q x = ±q CO , q y = 0] and [q x = 0, q y = ±q CO ]) as the origin of the observed correlations.

A Bi-Layer Dense/Porous Solid Electrolyte Interphase for Enhanced Lithium-Metal Stability

Due to its high theoretical capacity and low electrochemical potential, lithium metal is a highly investigated anode for next-generation high-energy batteries. However, the unstable chemical and topographical heterogeneous surface of lithium gives rise to safety and efficiency concerns that prevent it from being utilized in practical applications. Exposure to electrolyte leads to non-uniform, mixed organic-inorganic solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) formation, starting a cascading to non-uniform flux distribution, consumption of active materials, and dendrite growth. The SEI is the key feature that will lead to harnessing the capabilities possible with lithium metal. In this work, the formation of a closed-host bi-layer solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) improves the stability of lithium anode. This is successfully realized by forming an interconnected porous LiF-rich artificial SEI in contact with Li metal, and a dense, stable in-situ formed upper layer SEI. The porous layer increases the number of Li/LiF interfaces, which reduces local volume fluctuations and improves Li+ diffusion along these interfaces. Additionally, the tortuous porous structure guides uniform Li+ flux distribution and mechanically suppresses dendrite propagation. The dense upper layer of the SEI accomplishes a closed-host design through reaction with LiNO3 additive and prevents continuous consumption of active materials seen without the additive included in the electrolyte. The duality of a dense top layer with porous bottom layer led to extended cycle life and improved rate performance, evidenced with symmetric cell testing, as well as full cell testing paired with sulfur and LiFePO4 (LFP) cathodes. This work is a good example of a rational design of the SEI, based on comprehensive consideration of various critical factors to improve Li-metal anode stability, and highlights a new pathway to improve cycling and rate performances of Li metal batteries.

Hole-like Fermi surface in the overdoped non-superconducting Bi 1.8 Pb 0.4 Sr 2 CuO 6+δ

In high-temperature cuprate superconductors, the anti-ferromagnetic spin fluctuations are thought to have a very important role in naturally producing an attractive interaction between the electrons in the d-wave channel. The connection between superconductivity and spin fluctuations is expected to be especially consequential at the overdoped end point of the superconducting dome. In some materials, that point seems to coincide with a Lifshitz transition, where the Fermi surface changes from the hole-like centered at $(\pi, \pi)$ to the electron-like, centered at the Γ point causing a loss of large momentum anti-ferromagnetic fluctuations. In this work, we study the doping dependence of the electronic structure of Bi 1.8 Pb 0.4 Sr 2 CuO$_{6+\delta}$ in angle-resolved photoemission and find that the superconductivity vanishes at lower doping than that at which the Lifshitz transition occurs. This requires a more detailed re-examination of a spin fluctuation scenario.
