Coal desulfurization by low temperature chlorinolysis, phase 2

An engineering scale reactor system was constructed and operated for the evaluation of five high sulfur bituminous coals obtained from Kentucky, Ohio, and Illinois. Forty-four test runs were conducted under conditions of 100 by 200 mesh coal, solvents - methlychloroform and water, 60 to 130 C, 0 to 60 psig, 45 to 90 minutes, and gaseous chlorine flow rate of up to 24 SCFH. Sulfur removals demonstrated for the five coals were: maximum total sulfur removal of 46 to 89% (4 of 5 coals with methylchloroform) and 0 to 24% with water. In addition, an integrated continuous flow mini-pilot plant was designed and constructed for a nominal coal rate of 2 kilograms/hour which will be operated as part of the follow-on program. Equipment flow sheets and design drawings are included for both the batch and continuous flow mini-pilot plants.

Orbit/attitude estimation for the GOES spacecraft using VAS landmark data

A software system is described which provides for batch least squares estimation of spacecraft orbit, attitude, and camera bias parameters using image data from the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites (GOES). The image data are obtained by the Visible and Infrared Spin Scan Radiometer (VISSR) Atmospheric Sounder (VAS). The resulting estimated parameters are used for absolute image registration. Operating in the Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) PDP-11/70 computer, the FORTRAN system also includes the capabilities of image display and manipulations. An overview of the system is presented as well as some numerical results obtained from observations taken by the SMS-2 satellite over a 3 day interval in August 1975.

Advanced flight design systems subsystem performance models. Executive summary

Subsystem performance analysis required in flight design to assess the capability of the environmental control and life support system (ECLSS) to support the flight requirements and define operational procedures under contingency flight conditions is described. Current ECLSS modeling techniques are limited in the variety of configurations and they employ batch mode computer programs execution methods. Improvements in the variety of configurations that are modeled and a reduction in effort required for modeling and analysis is accomplished by developing a modular computer program which operates interactively.

A gas chromatographic air analyzer fabricated on a silicon wafer

A miniature gas analysis system has been built based on the principles of gas chromatography (GC). The major components are fabricated in silicon using photolithography and chemical etching techniques, which allows size reductions of nearly three orders of magnitude compared to conventional laboratory instruments. The chromatography system consists of a sample injection valve and a 1.5-m-long separating capillary column, which are fabricated on a substrate silicon wafer. The output thermal conductivity detector is separately batch fabricated and integrably mounted on the substrate wafer. The theory of gas chromatography has been used to optimize the performance of the sensor so that separations of gaseous hydrocarbon mixtures are performed in less than 10 s. The system is expected to find application in the areas of portable ambient air quality monitors, implanted biological experiments, and planetary probes.

A non-interactive approach to land use determination

An operational procedure for use by the Corps of Engineers to acquire land use information for hydrologic planning purposes is described. The operational constraints preclude the use of dedicated, interactive image processing facilities. The procedure combines manual interpretation techniques and the batch-mode computer analysis of Landsat digital data. An example of the application of the procedure to an urban watershed is described.

Automatic technique for accurately locating planet centers in Voyager images

An algorithm has been developed for locating with sub-pixel accuracy planet centers in the Voyager images of the Jovian system based upon automatic recognition of the planet limb. The planet center finder, called FARENC (for far encounter imaging mode), is a single VICAR program operating on IBM 360/65 computer. FARENC is designed to handle images of the order of 800 to 1000 pixels, to operate unaided in a batch environment, and to complete the process reliably in 2 minutes or less. The procedure is outlined step by step and limitations of the algorithm are discussed.

Attitude determination of Galileo spacecraft from star data

An entirely autonomous attitude determination algorithm has been developed for the dual spin Galileo spacecraft in its mission to Jupiter. A batch mode process is established which identifies three stars within the scanner's field-of-view based on the criteria of intensity and geometry. This is followed by a continuous star acquisition procedure which provides star transit times and a spacecraft spin rate estimate. A least-squares estimator then sequentially determines the spacecraft's attitude from successive star crossings by minimizing an error derived using the necessary condition of star and scanner slit normal orthogonality. Simulation results are presented, showing successful star identification and attitude convergence in the presence of nutation and star transit time uncertainty.

Formation of porous surface layers in reaction bonded silicon nitride during processing

Microstructural examination of reaction bonded silicon nitride (RBSN) has shown that there is often a region adjacent to the as-nitrided surfaces that is even more porous than the interior of this already quite porous material. Because this layer of large porosity is considered detrimental to both the strength and oxidation resistance of RBSN, a study was undertaken to determine if its formation could be prevented during processing. All test bars studied were made from a single batch of Si powder which was milled for 4 hours in heptane in a vibratory mill using high density alumina cylinders as the grinding media. After air drying the powder, bars were compacted in a single acting die and hydropressed.

Energy-Systems Economic Analysis

Energy Systems Economic Analysis (ESEA) program is flexible analytical tool for rank ordering of alternative energy systems. Basic ESEA approach derives an estimate of those costs incurred as result of purchasing, installing and operating an energy system. These costs, suitably aggregated into yearly costs over lifetime of system, are divided by expected yearly energy output to determine busbar energy costs. ESEA, developed in 1979, is written in FORTRAN IV for batch execution.

Analysis of estimation algorithms for autonomous navigation with TDRSS data

Estimation techniques for onboard orbit determination using Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS) data are investigated. The two user satellite orbits studied are similar to Landsat-D (near-circular, 700 kilometers altitude, near-polar inclination). The following estimation algorithms are identified as candidates for use in autonomous navigation: (1) the extended Kalman filter with process noise, (2) the EKF with consider parameters, (3) the sequential Kalman filter with consider parameters, and (4) the batch least-squares differential correction technique. The candidate estimators are evaluated with respect to their performance with both baseline and worst TDRSS measurement errors and tracking configurations.

FETSIM user's manual and example

A batch program written in FORTRAN IV which does D.C. and transient analysis of MOS circuits is presented. Circuits employing N-MOS transistors and/or P-MOS transistors in either a bulk technology or an SOS technology, or almost any combination of R-C elements may be analyzed. The program requires as input data the complete circuit topology, device parameters, process parameters, and control parameters. The user can specify initial node conditions and the input pulse format. For example, pulse rise time, fall time, width and time between succeeding pulses are all independently controllable. The program contains a sophisticated mathematical model that can accurately handle either NMOS, P-MOS, Bulk or SOS devices. Sensitivity to process changes is maintained by requiring such process parameters as threshold voltage and doping level as program inputs.

Alternative licensing arrangements and spectrum economics: The case of multipoint distribution service

At present, the Federal Communications Commission assigns radio licenses following a determination of the public interest. Whenever mutually conflicting license applications are filed, the Commission holds a comparative hearing. This assignment mechanism is criticized as cumbersome and unrealiable, and three alternatives are proposed: increasing the available spectrum, and either auctions or lotteries of radio licenses. An analysis is presented of the present system and these alternative arrangments for assigning rights to the frequency spectrum for the Multipoint Distribution Service (MDS). Although MDS is a relatively minor radio service, it serves as a prototype for message distribution services with a large potential for use in business communications. Moreover, the way in which the initial batch of MDS licenses was assigned provides a unique opportunity for empirical work on the economics of the licensing process.

Automated array assembly task development of low-cost polysilicon solar cells

Development of low cost, large area polysilicon solar cells was conducted in this program. Three types of polysilicon materialk were investigated. A theoretical and experimenal comparison between single crystal silicon and polysilicon solar cell efficiency was performed. Significant electrical performance differences were observed between types of wafer material, i.e. fine grain and coarse grain polysilicon and single crystal silicon. Efficiency degradation due to grain boundaries in fin grain and coarse grain polysilicon was shown to be small. It was demonstrated that 10 percent efficient polysilicon solar cells can be produced with spray on n+ dopants. This result fulfills an important goal of this project, which is the production of batch quantity of 10 percent efficient polysilicon solar cells.
