Assessment of Gaseous Helium Cooling in a Superconducting Coil Test Rig

An experimental rig was designed and constructed at the NASA Glenn Research Center to measure the alternating current (AC) losses of round, multifilament, superconducting (SC), magnesium diboride (MgB2) wire in the temperature range from 20 to 30 K. The rig resembles a permanent magnet (PM) motor with the stator windings omitted. Experiment packs containing the superconductor samples will be placed in the annular space between the rotor and the stator back iron. The original plan was to measure the AC losses by calorimetry using nonboiling liquid hydrogen as the cooling fluid. The present plan is to use helium gas (GHe) under a few bar pressure instead. This report summarizes the calculations that indicate that reasonable results can be obtained, even though the mass density of the GHe will be only a fraction of that of liquid hydrogen. It is necessary to show that the heat transfer coefficient from SC wire to GHe can be high enough, that the temperature rise of the He between the experiment inlet and outlet can be small enough, and that sufficient He flow can be driven by a commercially available He fan. Both straight wire samples to validate loss models and coils to simulate motor stator coils can be tested in the rig. The lowest superconductor temperature that is feasible to reach in the rig is estimated. The temperature range available for samples will be wider with the gaseous He system than it would have been with liquid hydrogen.

Non-contact monitoring of biofilms and corrosion on submerged surfaces with electrochemical impedance spectroscopy

Systems and methods for monitoring microorganisms on a surface are provided. In particular, a flat, patterned sensing electrode can be positioned proximate a surface in non-contact relationship with the surface. The sensing electrode can include a working electrode and a counter electrode. The surface and the sensing electrode can be submerged in an aqueous medium. An alternating current signal can be applied at the working electrode. The signal can propagate through the aqueous medium and can be measured at the counter electrode. The presence of microorganisms on the surface can cause changes in the signal as the signal propagates through the aqueous medium. Such changes in the signal can be used to determine impedance parameters, which can correspond to microbial characteristics associated with the surface. For instance, the microbial characteristics can be associated with a biofilm, corrosion and/or bio-corrosion on the surface.

Method and system for estimating a rotor position with a notch filter

A motor has a rotor that rotates in response to one or more alternating current input signals. A position sensor is adapted to generate a substantially saw-tooth waveform indicative of a position of the rotor. A primary processing module or data processor is capable of providing position data and speed data for the rotor based on the substantially saw-tooth waveform. A notch filter can reject one or more selected frequency components in the substantially saw-tooth waveform to reduce distortion off the substantially saw-tooth waveform that would otherwise tend to cause inaccuracy in the provided position data and speed data.

Method of improved performance in metal electrodes for batteries

Disclosed are methods for pre-conditioning or pre-treating the surface of a metal (e.g., lithium) electrode such that the cycle life and efficiency of the electrode within an electrochemical cell are improved through the prevention of dendrite growth. The pretreatment process includes the use of an alternating current to modify the surface properties of the metal electrode, such that a more uniform flux of metal ions is transferred across the electrode-electrolyte Interface in subsequent electrodeposition and electrodissolution processes. As a result, an electrode treated with such a process exhibits improved performance and durability, including markedly lower overpotentials and largely improved metal (e.g., lithium) retention in strip plate tests as compared with untreated electrodes.

Soft-switching, high performance single-phase AC-DC converter

A soft-switching, high-performance single-phase alternating current (AC)-direct current (DC) converter is provided. The AC-DC converter described herein provides a new circuit topology for single-stage, single-phase or multi-phase AC-DC power conversion with power factor correction (PFC) and galvanic isolation using a high-frequency isolation transformer. The AC-DC converter improves power conversion efficiency and power density—two of the most important metrics for a power converter. It achieves soft switching for high frequency switches in the circuit, leading to higher efficiency and lower electromagnetic interference (EMI).

Time Lapse Charged Wellbore Casing Controlled Source Electromagnetic Surveys for Monitoring Injected Carbon Dioxide

Carbon dioxide (CO2) injection for enhanced oil recovery (EOR) and long-term carbon storage extends the life of an oil field while keeping CO2 out of the atmosphere. Monitoring CO2 migration during EOR operations is critical to maximizing production and detecting unexpected CO2 migration quickly. In this project, we monitor CO2 migration using time-lapse charged well casing controlled source electromagnetics (CSEM) at an active EOR site undergoing CO2 injection. Since the electrical conductivity of the reservoir changes as CO2 displaces other fluids, this novel survey technique aims to monitor CO2 injection effectively and unobtrusively from the surface via electromagnetic field measurements. Of four time-lapse field campaigns spaced over two years, we have completed two. Each campaign consists of a CSEM survey supplemented by magnetotelluric and time-domain electromagnetic surveys. In the CSEM survey, a transmitter delivers alternating current to the subsurface at frequencies from 0.125 Hz to 16 Hz using steel well casings as electrodes. Charged well casing surveys detect deeper conductivity contrasts than surveys that use only surface electrodes, allowing CO2 movement at the depth of the reservoir to be imaged more clearly. We transmit on two well pairs. One pair is oriented in the east-west direction, and the other is oriented in the northeast-southwest direction. Receiver stations measure orthogonal components of the electric and magnetic fields. The measurements are repeated at the same locations in each field campaign. Data differences between campaigns provide information about changes in the electrical conductivity of the subsurface. We present the latest results from this ongoing project, including modeling, survey design, data processing techniques, and preliminary results from the field campaigns.

SHASTA-HELP: Hydrogen Estimator for Logistical Planning Tool

Underground reservoirs offer a promising option for medium- and long-term hydrogen storage that could potentially be safer and more cost-effective than surface alternatives. Currently, there are three underground hydrogen storage (UHS) facilities in the United States, which operate solely in salt caverns and store hydrogen primarily for industrial purposes. Salt formations favorable for geologic storage are geographically limited in the U.S. If a hydrogen economy is to develop, expansion of UHS to other geologic formations such as depleted gas fields and saline aquifers will be necessary to increase the availability of hydrogen storage. While research into the feasibility of storing hydrogen in these formations is ongoing, tools and methodologies are needed for characterizing the hydrogen storage potential in these reservoirs. We introduce the Hydrogen Estimator for Logistical Planning (HELP) tool from the Subsurface Hydrogen Assessment, Storage, and Technology Acceleration (SHASTA) project (https://edx.netl.doe.gov/shasta). SHASTA-HELP is a suite of web-based tools that have numerous capabilities for UHS project planning.

PSI/J: A Portable Interface for Submitting, Monitoring, and Managing Jobs

It is generally desirable for high-performance computing (HPC) applications to be portable between HPC systems, for example to make use of more performant hardware, make effective use of allocations, and to co-locate compute jobs with large datasets. Unfortunately, moving scientific applications between HPC systems is challenging for various reasons, most notably that HPC systems have different HPC schedulers. We introduce PSI/J, a job management abstraction API intended to simplify the construction of software components and applications that are portable over various HPC scheduler implementations. We argue that such a system is both necessary and that no viable alternative currently exists. We analyze similar notable APIs and attempt to determine the factors that influenced their evolution and adoption by the HPC community. We base the design of PSI/J on that analysis. We describe how PSI/J has been integrated in three workflow systems and one application, and also show via experiments that PSI/J imposes minimal overhead.

Construction and Analysis of Electronic circuits

The Aviation Environmental Technical Branch produces many various types of aeronautical research that benefits the NASA mission for space exploration and in turn, produces new technology for our nation. One of the present goals of the Aviation Environmental Technical Branch is to create better engines for airplanes by testing supersonic jet propulsion and safe fuel combustion. During the summer of 2004, I was hired by Vincent Sattenvhite Chief executive of the Aviation Environmental Technical Branch to Assist Yves Lamothe with a fuel igniter circuit. Yves Lamothe is an electrical engineer who is currently working on safe fuel combustion testing. This testing is planned to determine the minimum ignition energy for fuel and air vapors of current and alternative fuels under simulated flight conditions. An air temperature bath will provide simulated flight profile temperatures and the heat fluxes to the test chamber. I was assigned with Yves to help complete the igniter circuit which consists of a 36k voltage supply an oscilloscope, and a high voltage transistor switch. During my tenure in the L.E.C.I.R.P. program I studied the basics of electricity and circuitry along with two other projects that I completed. In the beginning of my internship, I devote all of my time to research the aspects of circuitry so that I would be prepared for the projects that I was assigned to do. I read about lessons on; the basic physical concepts of electronics, Electrical units, Basic dc circuits, direct current circuit analysis, resistance and cell batteries, various types of magnetism , Alternating current basics, inductance, and power supplies. I received work sheets and math equations from my Mentor so that I could be able to apply these concepts into my work. After I complete my studies, I went on to construct a LED chaser circuit which displays a series of light patterns using a 555 timer. I incorporated a switch and motion detector into the circuit to create basic alarm system. This project challenged my ability to interpret a schematic and expand it. While I was still completing the LED chaser circuit I Also was given A Basic Stamp Toddler Robot to build and program. The Toddler robot can walk in 36 various styles using advanced robotics. I used many different programs to create movement and direction of the robot. Also the Toddler can use infrared vision to sense objects. This enables the robot to maneuver indefinitely without running into objects. During my tenure at the NASA Glen Research Center I definite utilized the NASA mission to educate. I learned valuable information to help in my up coming year as a freshman in college.

Low-Temperature Supercapacitors

An effort to extend the low-temperature operational limit of supercapacitors is currently underway. At present, commercially available non-aqueous supercapacitors are rated for a minimum operating temperature of -40 C. A capability to operate at lower temperatures would be desirable for delivering power to systems that must operate in outer space or in the Polar Regions on Earth. Supercapacitors (also known as double-layer or electrochemical capacitors) offer a high power density (>1,000 W/kg) and moderate energy density (about 5 to 10 Wh/kg) technology for storing energy and delivering power. This combination of properties enables delivery of large currents for pulsed applications, or alternatively, smaller currents for low duty cycle applications. The mechanism of storage of electric charge in a supercapacitor -- at the electrical double-layer formed at a solid-electrode/liquid-electrolyte interface -- differs from that of a primary or secondary electrochemical cell (i.e., a battery) in such a manner as to impart a long cycle life (typically >10(exp 6) charge/discharge cycles).

Multicriterion Benefit Evaluation of Deploying New Battery Technology with Increased Capacity at a Generic Nuclear Power

Nuclear power plant (NPP) safety improvements are routinely made by plant licensees and regulators. Examples of plant improvements include accident-tolerant fuel, diverse and flexible coping strategies, passive cooling systems, and increased battery capacity. A combined use of these plant improvements could lead to plant designs with enhanced resilience, allowing NPPs to better cope with both internal and external hazards and keep the plant operating safely, efficiently, and economically. This paper focuses on increased battery capacity and evaluates the potential costs and benefits of deploying batteries with increased capacities at a generic boiling water reactor (BWR) NPP. A multicriterion benefit evaluation methodology is used for the cost-benefit analysis. Ten alternatives for extending battery capacity are developed, including nine alternatives to provide additional direct-current power and one alternative to provide additional alternating-current power. Potential benefits of reducing plant risk are quantified through incorporating the alternatives into loss-of-offsite-power scenarios of the generic BWR probabilistic risk assessment model. Potential costs of implementing the alternatives are qualitatively discussed and ranked. The alternatives are then compared based on their impacts on plant risk and economics.
