NorthStar Facility Target Fab and Flow Testing - FY 21

The facility target fabrication and flow testing activity will consist of flow tests using the blower system at LANL to test the disk holder and target, both redesigned by the NorthStar prime contractor. The housing and transition system delivering helium cooling to the disc holder and target will be fabricated and tested at LANL facilities. The tests will include pressure drop versus flow measurements through the target and housing, optical flow diagnostics and fiber optic imaging of the disc stack. The pressure drop measurements will be compared to CFD simulations to verify the latter, the optical flow diagnostics will be used to determine whether modifications made to the housing and target holder allow sufficient flow through the bottom of the housing to adequately cool it and the fiber optics will be used to image the discs during operation as a proof of concept of the diagnostic, to be used at NorthStar facilities during preproduction testing. The work is a Partial Fulfillment of the Deliverable Requirement for NorthStar Facility Target Fab and Flow Testing and Production Target Testing Support by LANL

High Brightness High Duty Factor Negative Ion Beam Injector [Slides]

The high brightness negative ion injector combines multiple individual low-duty-factor H- ion sources (multiplexing) in a manner that allows flexibility in final pulse format and beam duty factor up to CW and increases reliability by eliminating an otherwise single-point failure usually associated with using a single ion source. The multiplexing of multiple beams in new injector system also preserves the beam quality of each individual ion source, eliminating a significant source of beam quality degradation usually associated with combining beams.

Evaluation of Synthetic Diamond Detectors for Fast Neutron and X-ray Detection [Slides]

Element6 has come out of a two year production pause (pre-COVID) with material that lacks their previous QC – some is excellent, but screening is needed. Applied Diamond can now make usable polycrystalline material, for applications not requiring absolute flux calibration. A large area possible (1cm 2 ). Great Lakes Crystal Technology has made great progress in two years, but still needs development to become a trusted supplier of single crystal material. LANL staff (Dongsung Kim) has developed proficient lithography and bonding expertise at CINT to make devices from vendor supplied material. LANL staff has continued and expanded capabilities for device testing at NSLS-II.

Parallel Simulation of Beam Dynamics in Particle Accelerators [Slides]

LW3D was used to explore the expected CSR from an undulator-based diagnostic using a first-principles approach. It was also used for comparison with an analytic Green-function approach. LW3D was extended to model transport systems involving dipoles and quadrupoles. It was used to explore the radiation produced in a 4-dipole bunch compressor. Radiation ahead of the electron bunch at the beamline exit was shown to be associated with wavefronts produced in upstream dipoles overtaking the bunch.

EM and beam dynamics modeling of CCL with CST Studio

The 800-MeV proton linac at LANSCE consists of a drift-tube linac, which brings the beam to 100 MeV, followed by a coupled-cavity linac (CCL). Each of 44 CCL modules contain multiple tanks, and it is fed by a single 805-MHz klystron. CCL tanks are multi-cell blocks of identical re-entrant sidecoupled cavities, which are followed by drifts with magnetic quadrupole doublets. Bridge couplers – special cavities displaced from the beam axis – electromagnetically couple CCL tanks over such drifts. We have developed 3D CST models of CCL tanks of the LANSCE linac. Their electromagnetic analysis is performed using MicroWave Studio. Beam dynamics is modeled with Particle Studio for bunch trains with realistic beam distributions using the CST calculated RF fields and quadrupole magnetic fields to determine the output beam parameters.

Experimental Study of Fixed Plate Insert for Window Protection

Evidenced from experiments to date, NorthStar can expect that potentially significant changes in the target cooling passages are likely due to disk shape changes by thermal distortions or breakage. In the bulk of the target the result will be increased He flow in some channels and decreased flow in others.

Pulsed Beam Heating Analysis of Curved Inconel Window with Pressurized Helium Gas Cooling

Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is working with NorthStar medical Radioisotopes (NMR) on their efforts to produce Mo-99 through the irradiation of Mo-100 using Rodotron electron accelerators. Two Rhodotron accelerators are used to irradiate a double sided target. LANL collaborates with NMR to experimentally investigate beam effects on the target which consists of two Inconel 718 windows on either side of a stack of Mo-100 discs. LANL simulates the beam heating using an induction heater.

Mo-100 Disk Structural Integrity Tests II

This report is a continuation of the work performed in the report, Mo-100 Disk Structural Integrity Tests I [1]. The NorthStar pressed and sintered 29 mm diameter, 0.5 mm thick Mo-100 disks will be subjected to large temperature gradients when in-beam during production. These large temperature gradients cause high stress and deformation within the disks that could prove detrimental to the target assembly’s cooling performance. Disk fracture is also a possibility that must be understood. Therefore, disk structural integrity tests were performed to understand the thermal induced behavior of these disks. In order to replicate the in-beam conditions, the Mo-100 disks were subjected to large temperature gradients using a 30kW induction heater and coil. A series of transient tests were conducted in a similar fashion as the previous work, as well as an attempt to create steady state conditions for more accurate temperature gradients. The transient thermal test setup and results are described in this report.

Modeling Codes Used for LAMP

LAMP team is planning on using multiple computer codes as tools for modeling beam dynamics, electromagnetics, and plasma environment in ion sources. Below is a description of the computer tools we have been using or planning to use in the future. Most of the codes chosen for the LAMP project are capable to model most of the beam dynamics in LAMP. A judicious choice of the appropriate code to use will be based on speed and fidelity of the modeling with faster calculations produced by simplifying some features.

Strategies for Achieving the DOE Hydrogen Shot Goal: Thermal Conversion Approaches

In July 2021 the United States (U.S.) Department of Energy (DOE) launched the first of a series of Department-wide Energy Earthshot goals designed to accelerate breakthroughs of more abundant, affordable, and reliable clean energy solutions within the decade. The Hydrogen Shot goal seeks to reduce the cost of clean hydrogen to $\$$1 per 1 kilogram in 1 decade ("1 1 1"). Today, thermal conversion of fossil fuels represents the predominant, lowest cost method of hydrogen production. In 2020 approximately 75 percent of global, dedicated hydrogen production was produced via fossil fuels using thermal conversion approaches such as steam reforming and gasification. However, carbon management techniques such as CO 2 capture and sequestration (CCS) and pyrolysis are not widely represented in the current fossil-based hydrogen production fleet. Lowering the cost of clean hydrogen production from commercial and advanced thermal conversion-based technologies is critical for successfully achieving the Hydrogen Shot goal. This report presents the findings from an initial screening analysis of several scenarios that explore cost drivers related to clean hydrogen production. The screening encompasses commercially available and developing thermal conversion technology alternatives as well as factors exogenous to the plant such as feedstock/byproduct pricing, CO 2 pipeline and storage infrastructure costs, and scale to assess potential pathways towards meeting the Hydrogen Shot goal. Additionally, this report presents initial Research and Development (R&D) strategies to advance thermal conversion technology towards meeting the Hydrogen Shot goal.
