U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon Competition Guide: 2021 Design Challenge and 2023 Build Challenge

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Solar Decathlon® is a collegiate competition, comprising 10 Contests, that challenges student teams to design and build highly efficient and innovative buildings powered by renewable energy. The competition gives teams the option to participate in one of two Challenges: the Design Challenge or the Build Challenge. Teams entering the Design Challenge must select from seven allowable building types ("Divisions") to create their design. Teams entering the Build Challenge will build a residential unit locally and compete nationally. Whether participating in the Design Challenge or the Build Challenge, all teams are evaluated across 10 Contests. The Competition Guide outlines competition history and structure, descriptions of the 10 Contests, and competition details for both the 2021 Design Challenge and 2023 Build Challenge.

Annual Technology Baseline: The 2023 Electricity Update

Consistent cost and performance data for various electricity generation technologies can be difficult to find and may change frequently for certain technologies. With the Annual Technology Baseline (ATB), the National Renewable Energy Laboratory annually provides an organized and centralized set of such cost and performance data. The ATB uses the best information from the Department of Energy national laboratories' renewable energy analysts. The ATB has been reviewed by experts and it includes the following electricity generation and storage technologies: land-based wind, offshore wind, distributed wind, utility-scale solar photovoltaics (PV), commercial-scale solar PV, residential-scale solar PV, concentrating solar power, geothermal power, hydropower, utility-scale battery storage, commercial battery storage, residential battery storage, pumped storage hydropower, coal, and natural gas. EIA data for nuclear and conventional biopower are included for reference. This webinar presentation introduces the 2023 update to the ATB Electricity data and documentation.

Retractable Sensor Poster for ANIMMA 2023 Conference

Material Test Reactors (MTRs) such as the Advanced Test Reactor (ATR) at the Idaho National Laboratory (INL) are used to irradiate nuclear fuels and materials to evaluate their performance after high levels of exposure to a reactor in-pile environment. The test environment within these reactors are extremely harsh and long-term exposure causes sensor decalibration or failure. Most tests only require data points at daily intervals meaning that the sensor does not necessarily need to be in place continuously for the full experiment. One proposed solution to the issue described above is to have a sensor which can be periodically inserted through a guide tube into the test region and retracted; this would act as a reference check on the sensors installed permanently. If a compact and robust enough design can be made, it has the potential to extend the life of the sensor and keep it within calibration. This LRS entry is for a poster summarizing a presentation that will be given at the ANIMMA 2023 conference. The poster will be on display in the Measurement Sciences Laboratory booth at ANIMMA. Most of the material on this poster came from LRS entry INL/CON-23-72797.

Advancing Geothermal Research: Fiscal Year 2023 Accomplishments Report

Geothermal energy has delivered renewable power for more than 100 years, and renewable heat for far longer, but recent research and advancements have shown that the potential of geothermal is largely untapped. With the ability to provide 24/7 renewable electricity, heating/ cooling, and storage - plus the potential to access critical minerals and more - the Earth's subsurface is a powerhouse ready to be tapped. Investors and leaders across both the public and private sectors are recognizing the unique value of geothermal, and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) is leading the way by supporting the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Geothermal Technologies Office (GTO) in advancing geothermal energy options today and strategically planning for tomorrow. In support of this objective during fiscal year 2023 (FY23), NREL expanded its collaborations with public and private partners, led impactful research in key technology and energy system areas, demonstrated leadership in the sector, and increased stakeholder engagement and outreach efforts.
