Initiating Event Rates at U.S. Nuclear Power Plants: 2022 Update

Analyzing initiating event rates is important because it indicates trends and patterns of plant performance and provides inputs to several U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) risk-informed regulatory activities. This report presents an analysis of initiating event frequencies at U.S. commercial nuclear power plants from calendar year 1988 through 2022, as reported in licensee event reports. Engineers with nuclear power plant experience reviewed each event report since the last update to this report to categorize and characterize reactor trips. To be included in this study, an event had to meet all of the following criteria: (1) the event included an unplanned reactor trip (not a scheduled reactor trip on the daily operations schedule), (2) the sequence of events started when the reactor was critical and at or above the point of adding heat, (3) the event occurred at a U.S. commercial nuclear power plant (excluding Fort St. Vrain and LaCrosse), and (4) the event was reported by a licensee event report. Sixteen initiating event groupings are trended and displayed. For some of the categories, relevant events are plotted separately for boiling-water reactors (BWR) and pressurized-water reactors (PWR). P-values are given for the possible presence of a trend over the most recent 10 years.

ADRIANO2 Calorimeter Performance from 2022 Test Beams

A novel high-granularity dual-readout calorimetric technique was developed as part of the T1604 collaboration. The ADRIANO2 Calorimeter Prototype consists of a pair of optically isolated, small sized tiles made of scintillating plastic and lead glass. Čerenkov light from the lead glass are exploited to for high resolution timing measurements, while high granularity from scintillating plastic can be used to probe the spatial component of the particle shower. This setup works for excellent energy resolution and particle detection for REDTOP as it is crucial for a calorimeter to detect the decay products of eta/eta-prime mesons. Measurements were collected on ADRIANO2 between February to December 2022 to evaluate the detector performance at Fermilab’s Test Beam Facility. The key metrics extracted from my analysis are the detector’s efficiency for various tile configuration and light-yield which will then be used as parameters for an upgraded REDTOP monte-carlo simulation campaign. An in-depth analysis of ADRIANO2 performance are detailed in this presentation.

High Energy Arcing Fault (HEAF) Photometrics 2022 Test Report

High Energy Arcing Faults (HEAFs) are hazardous events in which an electrical arc leads to the rapid release of energy in the form of heat, vaporized metal, and mechanical force. In Nuclear Power Plants, these events are often accompanied by loss of essential power and complicated shutdowns. To confirm the probabilistic risk analysis (PRA) methodology in NUREG/CR-6850, which was formulated based on limited observational data, the NRC led an international experimental campaign from 2014 to 2016. The results of these experiments uncovered an unexpected hazard posed by aluminum components in or near electrical equipment and the potential for unanalyzed equipment failures. Sandia National Laboratories (SNL), in support of the NRC work, collaborated with NIST, BSI, KEMA, and NRC to support the full-scale HEAF test campaign in 2022. SNL provided high speed visible and infrared video/data of ten tests that collected data from HEAFs originated on copper and aluminum buses inside switchgears and bus ducts. Part of the SNL scope was to place cameras with high-speed data collection at different vantage points within the test facility to provide NRC a more complete and granular view of the test events.
