Summer 2021 Co-op Report: X-Ray Scintillation Detector (A Co-op Work Experience Report)

The M-3 team was in need of a detector that could be used properly characterize their X-Ray machines. It can also be used to diagnose the X-ray in the case that problems arise before or during an experiment. They put me in charge of designing, ordering, and constructing said detector. After doing research, I found that scintillation-based detectors would be the best diagnostic tool for this purpose. It will allow the team to collect a full photon count of the X-ray pulse as well as provide spectroscopy functions with which we can view photon counts at different energy levels. This will also allow them to calculate an accurate dose given from the machine. Due to lead times, the crystals are still in manufacturing, thus the detector could not be completed. Although the designs and calculations needed to construct and operate the scintillator have been completed which is what I will be presenting in this document. Compared to the detectors being used before, my design offers a cheaper and far more efficient alternative.

LLNL International Working Group on Gamma Spectrometry - Preparation of IDB Dataset

The spectral information and associated metadata, including source information, detector setup, and shielding configuration is described in human readable, comma-separated text files (csv). Five csv files are associated with each material type and include the following information (where [Isotope] is U, Pu, and MOX): [Isotope]_measurement_metadata - Metadata of the measurement configuration, including material composition at time of acquisition (decay corrected from certificate date). Data that is unique to a measurement configuration e.g. detector geometry, source-detector distance, analyzer and other electronics used, attenuating materials are provided in this file. [Isotope]_spectrum_metadata - The information that is unique to the spectrum. This includes detector specifications (e.g. date of acquisition, number of channels, gain (keV/channel), energy range, real and live time, full width half-maximum (FWHM) of the 186 or 208 peak for uranium or plutonium measurements, respectively. [Isotope]_source_metadata - The source material used for the measurement, this includes the ratio and uncertainties of isotopes present and processing information of the material. In addition, the certificate information for the source material is listed. [Isotope]_spectrum_counts_metadata - The counts per channel for each spectrum. This data is linked via the UID.spectrum index to the measurement_metadata file. [Isotope]_spectrum_checksum_metadata The MD5 checksum for the original spectrum file. This data is linked via the UID.spectrum index to the measurement_metadata file. This information is provided to prevent duplication of entries in the database.

Involute Working Group – Validation of CFD Turbulence Models for Steady-State Safety Analysis of Corner Geometry

Worldwide, three research reactors have fuel plates curved as a circle-involute (a spiral generated around a circle): Oak Ridge National Laboratory High Flux Isotope Reactor located in Tennessee, U.S.A. [1], Institut Laue-Langevin High Flux Reactor located in Grenoble, France [2], and Technical University of Munich Research Neutron Source Heinz Maier-Leibnitz located in Garching, Germany [3]. All three reactors are currently using highly enriched uranium ( 235 U/U ≥ 20 wt%) as fuel, and all three are actively engaged in activities to convert to low-enriched uranium ( 235 U/U < 20 wt%) fuel.

A Step Toward Working with Untrusted Ground Stations

We are witnessing a shift toward outsourcing satellite and ground station services to third-party commercial entities. As with any enterprise, these third parties can be vulnerable to cyber compromise, including image tampering and deepfake injection. The multimedia community is beginning to establish standards and technology to enable authenticity verification of multimedia created and edited by others. While appealing to the remote sensing domain, the nature of raw satellite imagery is incompatible with the proposed change verification tools, resulting in the need for a means to validate updates made to image products. We present a simple method for verifying a specific class of algorithms. Our inverse processing approach eliminates the need to see the original image as the reversed data can be checked against an original digital signature. We demonstrate our approach on basic image restoration routines and conclude with a discussion on open challenges and next steps.
