Tunable Electrochemical Pathway for High-Purity REMs and CMs

This report details a comprehensive research initiative focused on developing a technical research plan for the efficient and sustainable production of rare earth elements (REEs) and critical materials (CMs) from coal-based resources, specifically lignite coal from the Williston Basin in North Dakota. The project’s methodology centers on the design and evaluation of a tunable electrochemical pathway (TEP), an innovative approach aimed at achieving high-purity rare earth oxides (REOs), rare earth salts (RES), and CMs. This research is crucial for addressing the growing demand for these materials in clean energy technologies, electric vehicles, and high-tech applications, while reducing the United States’ reliance on foreign supply chains. The project was structured into four key tasks, each designed to build upon the previous one and contribute to the overarching goal of developing a viable technical research plan.

A Dark Photon Dark Matter Search with a Widely-Tunable SRF Cavity

The SERAPH (SupERconducting Axion and Paraphoton Haloscope) experiment is a family of superconducting haloscopes being developed by the Superconducting Quantum Materials and Systems (SQMS) Center to search for wavelike dark matter. This presentation will focus on preliminary results from our dark photon dark matter search using a widely-tunable SRF cavity operating between 4-7 GHz, nicknamed the “plunger cavity.” I will present the cavity design and characterization, analyze the impact of microphonics on system performance and haloscope sensitivity, and describe our tuning methodology for this Q~10^8 cavity. The presentation will cover our haloscope analysis approach and discuss sensitivity limits achieved within this frequency range. Finally, I will outline lessons learned from this first search, implications for future axion searches, and proposed improvements for subsequent SERAPH experiments.

Competing Magnetic Interactions and Field-Induced Metamagnetic Transition in Highly Crystalline Phase-Tunable Iron Oxide Nanorods

The inherent existence of multi phases in iron oxide nanostructures highlights the significance of them being investigated deliberately to understand and possibly control the phases. Here, the effects of annealing at 250 °C with a variable duration on the bulk magnetic and structural properties of high aspect ratio biphase iron oxide nanorods with ferrimagnetic Fe3O4 and antiferromagnetic α-Fe2O3 are explored. Increasing annealing time under a free flow of oxygen enhanced the α-Fe2O3 volume fraction and improved the crystallinity of the Fe3O4 phase, identified in changes in the magnetization as a function of annealing time. A critical annealing time of approximately 3 h maximized the presence of both phases, as observed via an enhancement in the magnetization and an interfacial pinning effect. This is attributed to disordered spins separating the magnetically distinct phases which tend to align with the application of a magnetic field at high temperatures. The increased antiferromagnetic phase can be distinguished due to the field-induced metamagnetic transitions observed in structures annealed for more than 3 h and was especially prominent in the 9 h annealed sample. Our controlled study in determining the changes in volume fractions with annealing time will enable precise control over phase tunability in iron oxide nanorods, allowing custom-made phase volume fractions in different applications ranging from spintronics to biomedical applications.

Tunable Geometries in Sparse Clifford Circuits

We investigate the emergence of different effective geometries in stochastic Clifford circuits with sparse coupling. By changing the probability distribution for choosing two-site gates as a function of distance, we generate sparse interactions that either decay or grow with distance as a function of a single tunable parameter. Tuning this parameter reveals three distinct regimes of geometry for the spreading of correlations and growth of entanglement in the system. We observe linear geometry for short-range interactions, treelike geometry on a sparse coupling graph for long-range interactions, and an intermediate fast scrambling regime at the crossover point between the linear and treelike geometries. This transition in geometry is revealed in calculations of the subsystem entanglement entropy and tripartite mutual information. We also study emergent lightcones that govern these effective geometries by teleporting a single qubit of information from an input qubit to an output qubit. These tools help to analyze distinct geometries arising in dynamics and correlation spreading in quantum many-body systems.

Tunable UV ∼ IR frequency comb generation via high-order sideband generation

Abstract We propose the generation of a widely tunable UV-to-IR frequency comb by high-order sideband generation (HSB) spectrum emitted from semiconductors. In our theoretical simulations, we demonstrate the high-order sideband signals of two series (2m Ω seed + (2n + 1) ω driver , and (2m + 1) Ω seed + 2 n ω driver ), wheremandnare integers of a seed pulse and a driver laser frequency, respectively. The simulations also reveal the intensity of HSB scale with the driver laser power, both perturbatively and non-perturbatively. We find that the harmonic position and spacing of the high-order sideband emission can be controlled by varying the seed pulse and driver photon energies. In the experiment, we applied a visible ( ℏ Ω seed = 3.1 eV, ∼400 nm) seed pulse and mid-infrared (MIR, ℏ ω driver = 0.4 eV, 3.1 μm) driver pulses to ZnSe target. Our experimental observations confirmed the UV (4.7 eV, 263 nm and 3.9 eV, 317 nm) HSB generation.

Tunable Epsilon Near Zero Metamaterial with Rotating Obround-Shaped Meta-Atoms

A new design of a microwave-range ENZ metamaterial consisting of rods with an obround cross-section is proposed. The plasma frequency of the metamaterial can be tuned by rotating the constituent meta-atoms. Tunability of the plasma frequency by 26% is demonstrated both experimentally and numerically. The observed tuning range is dramatically higher than in the one observed in natural materials at optical range.

Feed-forward spectral calibration methodology for line-scanned tunable laser absorption spectroscopy

A generalized feed-forward method for accurate tunable laser absorption spectroscopy includes generating a laser beam. The generated laser beam is directed down a reference path and a test/sample path. One or more parameters are extracted from the reference path. The one or more parameters, extracted from the reference path, are used as feed-forward, to adjust spectral analysis of the test/sample path to detect a composition and/or concentration of an analyte gas within the test/sample path. The extraction of the one or more parameters from the reference path and the spectral analysis of the test/sample path are performed substantially concurrently.

High Efficiency Travelling Wave X-Band Linac With Tunable Output Energy

We are designing a compact and efficient electron linac with 500 W of average beam power and beam energy tunable from 5 to 10 MeV. The accelerator is of travelling wave type, and has little RF power reflected back to the RF source, eliminating the need for a large, lossy isolator. The structure is powered by a compact commercial 1.7 MW 9.3 GHz magnetron. To vary the beam energy we will change the current from the triode gun. We present an analysis of the structure, which includes varying the length from 60 cm to 80 cm, and the structure type, such as constant impedance versus constant gradient.

Electrically tunable metasurfaces incorporating a phase change material

Electrically tunable metasurfaces including an array of subwavelength metasurface unit elements are presented. The unit elements include a stacked metal-insulator-metal structure within which an active phase change layer is included. A purely insulator, metal, or coexisting metal-insulator phase of the active layer can be electrically controlled to tune an amplitude and phase response of the metasurfaces. In combination with the subwavelengths dimensions of the unit elements, the phase and amplitude response can be controlled in a range from optical wavelengths to millimeter wavelength of incident light. Electrical control of the unit elements can be provided via resistive heating produced by flow of current though a top metal layer of the unit elements. Alternatively, electrical control of the unit elements can be provided via electrical field effect produced by applying a voltage differential between the top and bottom metal layers of the unit elements.

MEMS-tunable optical ring resonator

A microelectromechanical systems (MEMS)-tunable optical ring resonator is described herein. The ring resonator includes a resonator ring and a tuner ring, along with one or more springs. The springs may be internal or external, i.e., either within or outside the areal footprint of the resonator ring and the tuner ring. The one or more springs are configured to displace the tuner ring from the resonator ring by a desired gap based upon a desired resonant wavelength of the resonator ring. Tuning is implemented by applying a voltage to the ring resonator, with motion of the tuner ring causing a corresponding change in the effective index of the resonator ring. As the ring resonator is essentially a capacitive device, it draws very little power once tuning is achieved.
