New Flutter Analysis Technique for Time-Domain Computational Aeroelasticity

A new time-domain approach for computing flutter speed is presented. Based on the time-history result of aeroelastic simulation, the unknown unsteady aerodynamics model is estimated using a system identification technique. The full aeroelastic model is generated via coupling the estimated unsteady aerodynamic model with the known linear structure model. The critical dynamic pressure is computed and used in the subsequent simulation until the convergence of the critical dynamic pressure is achieved. The proposed method is applied to a benchmark cantilevered rectangular wing.

Propeller Source Noise Separation from Flight Test Measurements of the Joby Aviation Aircraft

The Vold-Kalman order-tracking filter is applied to full-scale acoustic flight test measurements of the Joby Aviation eVTOL aircraft. Using synchronized acquisition of the aircraft position, time-varying rotation rates of each propeller, and any given single-channel acoustic signal, harmonic and nonharmonic acoustic content can be separated. Furthermore, this time-domain technique can also separate harmonic content amongst individual propellers, providing additional physical insight into the total acoustic field. A 60 kt level flyover and hover are used to exemplify the effectiveness of the method. Results clearly demonstrate the ability to rank propulsors in terms of their relative importance without the use of phased arrays. Frequency- and order-domain results are provided, as well as noise hemispheres to illustrate directivity and individual propeller contributions. Differences can be associated with interactional or installation effects due to the similarities in propeller states for each condition. Simulated signals that track the measured time-varying shaft rates were used to assess the proper filter pole count and bandwidth.

DQ Admittance Extraction for Inverter-Based Resources: Preprint

The power grid industry is pushing for electro-magnetic transient (EMT)-based studies for generation interconnection and planning process due to high penetrations of inverter-based resource (IBRs). Vendor-specific and site-specific black-box IBR models are preferred in those simulation studies. For small-signal analysis, measurement-based admittance models are necessary. In this paper, we demonstrate the extraction of frequency-domain dq frame IBR models. These linear models are specific to operating conditions. We demonstrate two extraction methods: frequency scan and a step response-based method. The latter relies on converting time-domain responses to Laplace-domain expressions via eigensystem realization analysis (ERA). Both can lead to dq admittance representation and the latter is time saving.
