Control of liquid crystals combining surface acoustic waves, nematic flows, and microfluidic confinement
The optical properties of liquid crystals serve as the basis for display, diagnostic, and sensing technologies. Such properties are generally controlled by relying on electric fields. In this work, we investigate the effects of microfluidic flows and acoustic fields on the molecular orientation and the corresponding optical response of nematic liquid crystals. Several previously unknown structures are identified, which are rationalized in terms of a state diagram as a function of the strengths of the flow and the acoustic field. The new structures are interpreted by relying on calculations with a free energy functional expressed in terms of the tensorial order parameter, using continuum theory simulations in the Landau-de Gennes framework. Taken together, the findings presented here offer promise for the development of new systems based on combinations of sound, flow, and confinement.

High-Fidelity Numerical Wave Tank Verification & Validation Study: Wave Generation Through Paddle Motion: Preprint
This paper presents a numerical benchmark study of wave propagation due to a paddle motion using different high-fidelity numerical models, which are capable of replicating the nearly actual physical wave tank testing. A full time series of the measured wave generation paddle motion which was used to generate wave propagation in the physical wave tank will be utilized in each of the models contributed by IEA OES Task 10's participants, which includes both computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and smooth hydrodynamic particle (SPH). The high-fidelity simulations of the physical wave testcase will allow for the evaluation of the initial transient effects from wave ramp-up and its evolution in the wave tank over time for two representative regular waves with varying levels of nonlinearity. A couple of interesting metrics like the predicted wave surface elevation at select wave probes, wave period, and phase-shift in time will be assessed to evaluate the relative accuracy of numerical models versus experimental data within specified time intervals. These models will serve as a guide for modelers in the wave energy community and provide a base case to allow further and more detailed numerical modeling of the fixed Kramer Sphere Cases under wave excitation force wave tank testing.

Study for identification of Beneficial Uses of Space (BUS), phase 2. Volume 2: Technical report. Book 2: Section 5, appendices A through D
An investigation of the technology and programmatics involved in the development of four of the products selected as capable of benefitting from space manufacturing was conducted. The four activities selected are as follows: (1) levitation heating and melting of tungsten, (2) free suspension processing of oxides to form amorphous oxide materials, (3) crystals for surface wave acoustic substrates, and (4) space manufacturing of surface acoustic wave devices.
Holography with surface plasma waves
New technique utilizes reflection-type diffraction grating of type generally used in grating spectrometers. Grating is coated with thin layer of high-resolution recording medium, having absorption coefficient low enough to prevent incident light absorption before it is reflected by metal layer.
Surface acoustic wave stabilized oscillators: Additional aging results
Updated aging data for SAW oscillators with aluminum transducers on ST-cut quartz, for gold transducers on ST-cut quartz, and for aluminum transducers on SiO2/LiTaO3. Devices with gold transducers age differently (both and shape of curve) from those having a aluminum transducers indicating the transducer metallization can represent an important aging mechanism.
