Solar panel thermal cycling testing by solar simulation and infrared radiation methods

For the solar panels of the European Space Agency (ESA) satellites OTS/MAROTS and ECS/MARECS the thermal cycling tests were performed by using solar simulation methods. The performance data of two different solar simulators used and the thermal test results are described. The solar simulation thermal cycling tests for the ECS/MARECS solar panels were carried out with the aid of a rotatable multipanel test rig by which simultaneous testing of three solar panels was possible. As an alternative thermal test method, the capability of an infrared radiation method was studied and infrared simulation tests for the ultralight panel and the INTELSAT 5 solar panels were performed. The setup and the characteristics of the infrared radiation unit using a quartz lamp array of approx. 15 sq and LN2-cooled shutter and the thermal test results are presented. The irradiation uniformity, the solar panel temperature distribution, temperature changing rates for both test methods are compared. Results indicate the infrared simulation is an effective solar panel thermal testing method.

Preliminary results of scientific research on biosatellite Kosmos-1129

The first physiological study aimed at deeper examination mechanisms of weightlessness and adaptation/readaptation is described. It dealt with metabolism, support motor changes and nonspecific changes connected with stress reaction. Wistar rats were used in a triple setup: flight/vivarium/biosatellite mockup. Animal condition was assessed on motor activity and body temperature. Extensive tables show weight, blood and enzyme analysis, etc. Animals groups were labeled: stress, behavior, body composition, biorhythm, ontogenesis. The second or biological study dealt with tumorous carrot tissues but humidity control was defective: some indices are reported such as cell membrane permeability, tissue respiration, etc. It also was concerned with a fowl embryogenetic experiment (Japanese quail) but mechanical effects on landing reduced its success. The third study, on radiation dosimetry, presents a little tabulated data but chiefly gives lists of satellite detector units of different kinds and from different countries.

An integrated exhaust gas analysis system with self-contained data processing and automatic calibration

An integrated gas analysis system designed to operate in automatic, semiautomatic, and manual modes from a remote control panel is described. The system measures the carbon monoxide, oxygen, water vapor, total hydrocarbons, carbon dioxide, and oxides of nitrogen. A pull through design provides increased reliability and eliminates the need for manual flow rate adjustment and pressure correction. The system contains two microprocessors to range the analyzers, calibrate the system, process the raw data to units of concentration, and provides information to the facility research computer and to the operator through terminal and the control panels. After initial setup, the system operates for several hours without significant operator attention.

Positron annihilation studies of moisture in graphite-reinforced composites

The positron lifetime technique of monitoring absorbed moisture is applied to several composites, including graphite/polymides which are candidates for high-temperature (over 260 C) applications. The experimental setup is a conventional fast-slow coincidence system wherein the positron lifetime is measured with respect to a reference time determined by the detection of a nuclear gamma ray emitted simultaneously with the positron. From the experiments, a rate of change of positron mean lifetime per unit mass of water can be determined for each type of specimen. Positron lifetime spectra are presented for a graphite/polyimide composite and for a pure polyimide.

Heat transfer from a row of impinging jets to concave cylindrical surfaces

Starting from the first principles, and with one experimentally obtained parameter, an expression for stagnation heat transfer is derived, applicable to round, impinging jets. The results obtained with a row of air jets impinging on an electrically-heated surface in a small-scale setup characteristic of a typical turbine blade have been found compatible with the average heat transfer from a geometrically similar, steam-heated surface scaled up ten times, and comparable with the results of other investigators. These findings were linked to the flow fields likely to exist in the gas turbine blades, internally cooled by a row of round jets or a single jet of equivalent width. The magnitude of heat-transfer coefficients obtained here with impinging jets approaches that normally associated with forced convection of water and evaporative cooling.

Preliminary comparison of material charging properties using single-energy and multienergy electron beams

Results of tests designed to compare the charging properties of spacecraft material under a monoenergetic beam and under a continuously distributed beam are summarized. In the test setup the electron source was mounted in the top of a cylindrical vacuum chamber. A sheet of 5-mil-thick Kapton was placed on an insulated metal substrate at the bottom of the vacuum chamber. The dc current arriving on the substrate was measured and a field meter measured the potential of the test sample. A retarding potential analyzer measured the energy spectrum of the incident electron beam. With the monoenergetic beam, the sample charged to 12 kV and electrical discharges occurred. With the multi-energy spectra the samples charged to only 6 kV and 4 kV, and no discharger were observed. In these experiments, no effort was made to duplicate the spectra occurring in space. The tests were intended to simply to compare spacecraft material charging properties using monoenergetic and continuous multi-energy beams.

Electromagnetic fields produced by simulated spacecraft discharges

The initial phase of a broader, more complete program for the characterization of electrical breakdowns on spacecraft insulating materials is described which consisted of the development of a discharge simulator and characterization facility and the performance of a limited number of discharge measurements to verify the operation of the laboratory setup and to provide preliminary discharge transient field data. A preliminary model of the electromagnetic characteristics of the discharge was developed. It is based upon the "blow off" current model of discharges, with the underlying assumption of a propagating discharge. The laboratory test facility and discharge characterization instrumentation are discussed and the general results of the "quick look" tests are described on quartz solar reflectors aluminized Kapton and silver coated Teflon are described.

Design, analysis, and test verification of advanced encapsulation systems

Design sensitivities are established for the development of photovoltaic module criteria and the definition of needed research tasks. The program consists of three phases. In Phase I, analytical models were developed to perform optical, thermal, electrical, and structural analyses on candidate encapsulation systems. From these analyses several candidate systems will be selected for qualification testing during Phase II. Additionally, during Phase II, test specimens of various types will be constructed and tested to determine the validity of the analysis methodology developed in Phase I. In Phse III, a finalized optimum design based on knowledge gained in Phase I and II will be developed. All verification testing was completed during this period. Preliminary results and observations are discussed. Descriptions of the thermal, thermal structural, and structural deflection test setups are included.

Operational flow visualization techniques in the Langley Unitary Plan Wind Tunnel

The unitary plan wind tunnel (UPWT) uses in daily operation are shown. New ideas for improving the quality of established flow visualization methods are developed and programs on promising new flow visualization techniques are pursued. The unitary plan wind tunnel is a supersonic facility, referred to as a production facility, although the majority of tests are inhouse basic research investigations. The facility has two 4 ft. by 4 ft. test sections which span a Mach range from 1.5 to 4.6. The cost of operation is about $10 per minute. Problems are the time required for a flow visualization test setup and investigation costs and the ability to obtain consistently repeatable results. Examples of sublimation, vapor screen, oil flow, minitufts, schlieren, and shadowgraphs taken in UPWT are presented. All tests in UPWT employ one or more of the flow visualization techniques.

Experimental stress analysis of a thin-walled pressurized torus loaded by contact with a plane

It is pointed out that pneumatic tires have a large effect on the overall landing characteristics of an aircraft. The dynamic response upon landing and steering are crucial to the safety of the vehicle and the occupants. The present investigation has the objective to compare experimentally determined strains on an inner tube in contact with a flat plate with numerical values obtained on the basis of a finite element prediction, taking into account an employment of the Structural Analysis of General Shells (STAGS). The obtained results suggest that the clamped boundary condition utilized in the STAGS calculation is not exactly simulated by the employed test setup.

Results of a flight experiment on the catalytic efficiency of the Space Shuttle heat shield

An experiment was performed on the second Space Shuttle flight to verify data from arc-heated wind-tunnel tests indicating that the thermal protection tiles used on the Shuttle's surface are noncatalytic to the recombination of dissociated air. The experiment indicates that the tiles are indeed noncatalytic, and explains the lower than expected temperatures observed in the first two Shuttle flights. The data are reasonably well predicted with computations, using a chemically reactive boundary-layer code. The experimental setup and the computational analysis are described.
