Precisely repeatable rotary mechanism

Precision-finished lead screw and a fitted mating nut member produce a linear translatory motion. This motion is transformed to a rotary movement of a pivotal platform member. The transformation is achieved by coupling the nut member and the platform member through a pair of opposed, taut, flex bands.

Stress and adaptation responses to repeated acute acceleration.

Study in which groups of adult male chickens (single-comb white leghorn) were exposed daily to acceleration (centrifugation) of 2 or 3 G for 10 min, 1, 4, 8, 12, 16, and 24 hr (continuously), or 0 time (controls). After approximately five months of this intermittent treatment (training), the birds were exposed to continuous accelerations of the same G force (intensity). The degree of stress and adaptation of each bird was determined by survival and relative lymphocyte count criteria. Intermittent training exposures of 2 G developed levels of adaptation in birds directly proportional to the duration of their daily exposure. Intermittent training periods at 3 G, however, produced a physiological deterioration in birds receiving daily exposures of 8 hr or more. Adaptive benefits were found only in the 1- and 4-hr-daily intermittent 3-G exposure groups. Exposure to 3 G produced an immediate stress response as indicated by a low relative lymphocyte count which returned to control (preexposed) values prior to the next daily acceleration period in the 10-min, 1-hr, and 4-hr groups. This daily recovery period from stress appeared to be necessary for adaptation as opposed to deterioration for the more severe environmental (3 G) alteration.

Repeated cascade theory of homogeneous turbulence.

The problem of turbulent spectrum engenders two coupled hierarchies: one originates from the development of stress, leading to a transfer function, and the other from the development of an eddy viscosity. In order to incorporate physical roles among scales, the turbulent velocity fluctuation is decomposed into a series of ranks in the increasing order of randomness, contributing successively to energy or stress, eddy viscosity, relaxation frequency, and higher-rank frequencies in the memory chain. As a result, the first hierarchy mentioned above becomes closed at the quadrupole correlation. The second hierarchy governs the eddy viscosities of different ranks, related to relaxation frequencies of such ranks, in the form of a memory chain. It is cut off by an implicit viscous mechanism. For zero wind gradient, the spectrum in the inertial subrange recovers the Kolmogoroff k to the minus 5/3 law with a numerical constant 1.58, in good agreement with experiments. For a strong wind gradient, the spectrum in the production subrange has a k to the minus 1 law.
