Infrared and Raman spectroscopic studies of structural variations in minerals from Apollo 11, 12, 14 and 15 samples, volume 3

Infrared and Raman vibrational spectroscopic data, yielding direct information on molecular structure, were obtained for single grains ( 150 microns) of minerals, basalts, and glasses isolated from Apollo 11, 12, 14, and 15 rock and dust samples, and for grains in Apollo 14 polished butt samples. From the vibrational data, specification substitutions were determined for the predominant silicate minerals of plagioclase, pyroxene, and olivine. Unique spectral variations for grains of K-feldspar, orthopyroxene, pyroxenoid, and ilmenite were observed to exceed the ranges of terrestrial samples, and these variations may be correlatable with formation histories. Alpha-quartz was isolated as pure single grains, in granitic grains composited with sanidine, and in unique grains that were intimately mixed with varying amounts of glass. Accessory minerals of chromite and ulvospinel were isolated as pure grains and structurally characterized from their distinctive infrared spectra. Fundamental vibrations of the SiO4 tetrahedra in silicate minerals were used to classify bulk compositions in dust sieved fractions, basalt grains and glass particles, and to compare modal characteristics for maria, highland and rille samples. No hydrated minerals were found in any of the samples studied, indicating anhydrous formation conditions.

Light-detection electronics for a Raman lidar

A light-detection system for an optical radar, or lidar, unit to be used for remote temperature and composition measurements was designed, built, and bench tested. This detection system processes three return signal wavelengths: two Raman wavelengths, and the Rayleigh-Mie wavelength at 694.3 nanometers. Means of coping with photomultiplier tube instabilities and limitations are discussed. Circuits for gain control, ranging, and digitizing are included. The phototube gains can be switched fully on in 80 meters (450 nsec) or off in 30 meters (200 nsec) of range. The range circuit processes signals from 0.1 to 2 kilometers, with an estimated range resolution of less than 5 meters.

The use of the transmission windows of the Fabry-Perot interferometer in the detection of Raman scattered radiation from atmospheric gases.

Demonstration that the use of the Fabry-Perot interferometer as a filter with transmission windows occurring at regular intervals in wave numbers provides a highly sensitive method for detection of atmospheric gases using their rotational Raman spectra excited by a suitable laser. Some of the operating advantages include signal gains of several orders of magnitude, a simple direct interpretation of the results in terms of the density and types of the gaseous constituents, size and weight reductions from conventional apparatus, ease of operation, and relative freedom from interference from other molecules in the scattering volume. This method is compared with the techniques that have been discussed in the literature by other workers in the field.

Absolute intensity and polarization of rotational Raman scattering from N2, O2, and CO2

An experimental examination of the absolute intensity, polarization, and relative line intensities of rotational Raman scattering (RRS) from N2, O2, and CO2 is reported. The absolute scattering intensity for N2 is characterized by its differential cross section for backscattering of incident light at 647.1 nm, which is calculated from basic measured values. The ratio of the corresponding cross section for O2 to that for N2 is 2.50 plus or minus 5 percent. The intensity recent for N2, O2, and CO2 are shown to compare favorably to values calculated from recent measurements of the depolarization of Rayleigh scattering plus RRS. Measured depolarizations of various RRS lines agree to within a few percent with the theoretical value of 3/4. Detailed error analyses are presented for intensity and depolarization measurements. Finally, extensive RRS spectra at nominal gas temperatures of 23 C, 75 C, and 125 C are presented and shown to compare favorably to theoretical predictions.

Evaluation of Raman scattering as a sensor of temperature and molecular density

The performance of the Raman scattering technique for the remote monitoring of temperature and molecular number density in various wind tunnel and engine testing facilities has been experimentally evaluated. Temperature measurements were made by monitoring the pure rotational spectrum of nitrogen and the rotational branch separations of nu2 of CF4 for temperatures in the range 300 to 1000 K. These measurements yielded an average error of 2.6 and 7.6%, respectively, for temperature measurements at pressures near 1 atm. Molecular number density measurements with 20% error could be made at densities as low as 3.5 times 10 to the 22-nd power per cu m by monitoring the 6 to 8 rotational transition of nitrogen, 3.5 times 10 to the 23-rd power per cu m by monitoring the Q-branch of the fundamental vibrational transition of nitrogen, and 7 times 10 to the 22-nd power per cu m by monitoring the nu1 fundamental vibrational transition of CF4.

Raman scattering in antiferroelectric ammonium dihydrogen arsenate

Light scattering measurements of the Raman active modes of vibration in the range from 10 to 4000 per cm are reported for the paraelectric phase of NH4H2AsO4 in the temperature range from 220 to 295 K. Through examination of these spectra the protonic, transverse optic, internal, and O-H-O valence vibrations are identified, their symmetries are determined.

Raman spectra of gases. XVI - Torsional transitions in ethanol and ethanethiol

The Raman spectra of gaseous ethanol and ethanethiol have been investigated. Thiol torsional fundamentals for the gauche conformer of EtSH and EtSD have been observed and the asymmetric potential function for this vibration has been calculated. Methyl torsional transitions and overtones have also been observed for both of these molecules. Barriers to internal rotation for the methyl top are calculated to be 3.77 and 3.84 kcal/mol for the EtSH and EtSD compounds, respectively. Hydroxyl torsional fundamentals were observed at 207 and 170 per cm in the EtOH and EtOD spectra, respectively. Overtones of the methyl torsion in both molecules yield a barrier to internal rotation of 3.62 kcal/mol for the gauche conformer.

Raman spectra of gases. XVIII - Internal rotational motions in ethylamine and ethylamine-d2

The Raman spectra of gaseous CH3CH2NH2 and CH3CH2ND2 have been recorded at wavenumbers from 100 to 600. Both ground and excited states of the methyl and amino torsional modes for the gauche conformer have been observed. The overtone of the methyl torsion has also been observed for the gauche conformer. The methyl barriers in the gauche conformers of the CH3CH2NH2 and CH3CH2ND2 molecules were found to be 3.71 + or - 0.05 and 3.59 + or - 0.05 kcal/mole, respectively. The apparent difference in the barrier heights for these two isotopic species is attributed to a difference in the coupling between the methyl and amino torsions in these two molecules. The potential function for internal rotation around the C-N bond in CH3CH2ND2 was determined. The energy difference between the potential energy minima of the gauche and trans conformations is 0.592 kcal/mole with the trans being the more stable.

Spectra and structure of organophosphorus compounds. XII - Infrared and Raman spectra of /CH3/2PH and /CD3/2PH

The vibrational spectra of (CH3)2PH and (CD3)2PH have been studied and assignments made. In the infrared, the region between 4000 and 33 wavelength/cm was recorded for the gaseous and solid states, while Raman spectra from 3500 to 10 wavelength/cm in the gaseous, liquid and solid states were observed. There is some evidence of weak hydrogen bonding, based on the behavior of the phosphorus-hydrogen stretching and bending modes. There also appears to be considerable interaction between the methyl rocking and phosphorus-carbon stretching modes. The a double prime and a prime torsional modes appear to be accidentally degenerate at 182 and 142 wavelength/cm for the 'light' and 'heavy' compounds, respectively. This gives barriers of 2.14 and 2.30 kcal/mole, respectively.

Analysis of torsional spectra of molecules with two internal C3v rotors. II - Far infrared and low frequency Raman spectra of dimethylether isotopes

The torsional far infrared and Raman spectra of gaseous CH3OCH3, CD3OCH3, and CD3OCD3 are presented. They are analyzed using a computer program which is based on the results of an extensive investigation of the isometric groups and of the symmetry groups of the rotation-internal rotation Hamiltonians of a series of semirigid two-top models. Four or more Fourier coefficients of the potential functions in two variables could be determined for each isotope. Strong evidence was found for Fermi-resonance-type interactions with the COC bending mode.

The Raman spectra of N-14O2 and N-15O2 solids at 20 K

The Raman spectra of N-14O2 and N-15O2 have been studied at 20 K. The far infrared of N-14O2 at 20 K was also measured. The data were assigned on the basis of a C-sub 2 nu molecular model. Normal coordinate calculations were performed for a variety of assignments. The assignment that yielded the best fit is presented. The solid state effects are discussed.
