Defect annihilation in heavy ion irradiated polycrystalline gold

In this study, we explore the interaction of electron wind force (EWF) with defects originating from ion irradiation in-situ inside a transmission electron microscope. Nanocrystalline gold specimens were self-ion irradiated to a dose of 5 × 10 15 ions/cm 2 (45 displacement per atom) to generate a high density of displacement damage. We also developed a molecular dynamics simulation model to understand the associated atomic scale mechanisms. Both experiments and simulations show that the EWF can impart significant defect mobility even at low temperatures, resulting in the migration and elimination of defects in a few minutes. Overall, we propose that the EWF interacts with defects to create highly glissile Shockley partial dislocations, which makes the fast and low temperature defect annihilation possible.

Coherence in Polycrystalline Thin Films of Twisted Molecular Crystals

Helicoidal crystallites in rhythmically banded spherulites manifest spectacular optical patterns in small molecules and polymers. It is shown that concentric optical bands indicating crystallographic orientations typically lose coherence (in-phase twisting) with growth from the center of nucleation. Here, coherence is shown to increase as the twist period decreases for seven molecular crystals grown from the melt. This dependence was correlated to crystallite fiber thickness and length, as well as crystallite branching frequency, a parameter that was extracted from scanning electron micrographs, and supported by numerical simulations. Hole mobilities for 2,5-didodecyl-3,6-di(thiophen-2-yl)pyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole-1,4(2H,5H)-dione (DPP-C12) measured by using organic field-effect transistors demonstrated that more incoherent boundaries between optical bands in spherulites lead to higher charge transport for films with the same twist period. This was rationalized by combining our growth model with electrodynamic simulations. This work illustrates the emergence of complexity in crystallization processes (spherulite formation) that arises in the extra variable of helicoidal radial twisting. The details of the patterns analyzed here link the added complexity in crystal growth to the electronic and optical properties of the thin films.

Oxidation and Reduction of Polycrystalline Cerium Oxide Thin Films in Hydrogen

This study investigates the oxidation state of ceria thin films' surface and subsurface under 100 mTorr hydrogen using ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. We examine the influence of the initial oxidation state and sample temperature (25-450 °C) on the interaction with hydrogen. Our findings reveal that the oxidation state during hydrogen interaction involves a complex interplay between oxidizing hydride formation, reducing thermal reduction, and reducing formation of hydroxyls followed by water desorption. In all studied conditions, the subsurface exhibits a higher degree of oxidation compared to the surface, with a more subtle difference for the reduced sample. The reduced samples are significantly hydroxylated and covered with molecular water at 25 °C. We also investigate the impact of water vapor impurities in hydrogen. We find that although 1 × 10 -6 Torr water vapor oxidizes ceria, it is probably not the primary driver behind the oxidation of reduced ceria in the presence of hydrogen.

Nanoconfined Grain Boundaries Increase the Conductivity of Polycrystalline Molecular Crystals

Soft-solid molecular crystals consist of crystalline grains and fluid grain boundaries (GBs) that enhance the grain binding and transport of Li + ions between the grains. The total ionic conductivity consists of ion migration in both the grains and GBs. To unravel these contributions in adiponitrile (Adpn):LiPF 6 molecular crystals, the GB volume fraction was varied by changing the size of the crystals and the Adpn:LiPF 6 molar ratio. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations indicate that ion motion was subdiffusive in the grains and “well-diffusive” in the GBs, with GBs characterized as disordered nanoconfined regions of higher charge carrier concentration (∼1 M) than in saturated Adpn:LiPF 6 solutions (0.04 M), and Li + ions predominantly solvated by cyano groups with few contact ion pairs. The diffusivity in the GBs is at least an order of magnitude higher than that in the crystalline grains. The emergent picture is the grains as a reservoir of ions that migrate to faster-conducting GBs.

Charge Carrier and Spin Diffusion in a Polycrystalline and Single Crystal Lead Halide Perovskite Semiconductor

The directed movement of spin-bearing excitations in semiconductors can enable many potential schemes for spintronic applications. Understanding the mechanism of spin motion, as opposed to charge carrier or exciton motion, may require specialized techniques and sample conditions. Here we employ the noncontact and time-resolved technique of light-induced transient grating spectroscopy (LITG) to measure both carrier and spin motion in a perovskite semiconductor with varying crystallinity. The carrier motion aligns with expectations from past studies undertaken at low fluence, revealing an ambipolar diffusion coefficient on the order of 1 cm 2 /sec and diffusion length of roughly 1.5 μm for single crystals that is strongly attenuated as crystallite size decreases. The spin diffusion is measured with cross-polarized excitation beams and uncovers an intensity-dependent coefficient rising above 100 cm 2 /sec. The fast room-temperature spin relaxation limits the spin diffusion length, but the remarkable speedup of spin over carrier diffusion suggests a mechanism involving a combination of exchange-mediated and doping effects that enhance spin transport.
