Pathfinding for Airspace with Autonomous Vehicles (PAAV) Overview for RTCA SC-228

The Pathfinding for Airspace with Autonomous Vehicles (PAAV) sub-project started in 2021 under NASA’s Air Traffic Management – eXploration (ATM-X) project. ATM-X as a project is conducting research to support the growth of traditional aviation and new entrants. This presentation discusses the background of the PAAV project as well as it’s current areas of focus around uncrewed aircraft system (UAS) operations. The areas include the development of a flight test ecosystem, detect and avoid, traffic pattern integration, aircraft-to-aircraft communications, and contingency management. The aim of these research areas is to help inform the development of performance standards and FAA-approved procedures for integrating UAS into the national airspace system (NAS). The presentation seeks to describe the PAAV research objectives in sufficient detail to allow the committee to provide feedback on the sub-project's approach and main areas of interest.

Cislunar Autonomous Positioning System Technology Operations and Navigation Experiment (CAPSTONE): Pathfinder for Artemis Gateway

The Cislunar Autonomous Positioning System Technology Operations and Navigation Experiment (CAPSTONE) mission was developed by NASA in collaboration with Advanced Space, LLC of Westminster, Colorado. This technology demonstration mission serves as a pathfinder for near rectilinear halo orbit (NHRO) operations around the Moon. The NHRO, (Perilune = 3,200 km; Apolune = 70,000 km) is the intended orbit for NASA’s Artemis Gateway, a small, human-tended space station planned for lunar orbit. The CAPSTONE mission will validate simulations and confirm operational planning for Gateway while also validating performance of navigation and stationkeeping requirements for Gateway’s Power and Propulsion Element. Therefore, this mission will provide operational experience to NASA, commercial, and international missions for operations in a demanding orbital regime. This presentation accompanies the paper of the same title.

CLARREO Pathfinder (Cpf) State-of-the-Art Intercalibration Capabilities

NASA's Climate Absolute Radiance and Refractivity Observatory (CLARREO) Pathfinder (CPF) mission will deploy an Earth-observing reflected solar (RS) spectrometer, designed to measure Earth-reflected solar radiation from the International Space Station with a remarkable SI-traceable radiometric uncertainty of 0.3%-0.6% (k=1). The high-accuracy CPF measurements will provide an on-orbit reference for intercalibrating other spaceflight RS instruments. The CPF intercalibration team will showcase an innovative on-orbit intercalibration approach, wherein two other RS sensors—the shortwave (SW) channel of the Clouds and the Earth’s Radiant Energy System (CERES) and the Reflective Solar Bands (RSB) of the Visible Infrared Imager Radiometer Suite (VIIRS)—are intercalibrated against CPF benchmark measurements, with an unprecedented intercalibration methodology uncertainty of 0.3% (k=1).

In-depth Analysis of LISA Pathfinder Performance Results: Time Evolution, Noise Projection, Physical Models, and Implications for LISA

We present an in-depth analysis of the LISA Pathfinder differential acceleration performance over the entire course of its science operations, spanning approximately 500 days. We find: (1) The evolution of the Brownian noise that dominates the acceleration amplitude spectral density (ASD), for frequencies f≳1 mHz, is consistent with the decaying pressure due to the outgassing of a single gaseous species. (2) Between f=36 μHz and 1 mHz, the acceleration ASD shows a 1/f tail in excess of the Brownian noise of almost constant amplitude, with ≃20% fluctuations over a period of a few days, with no particular time pattern over the course of the mission. (3) At the lowest considered frequency of f=18 μHz, the ASD significantly deviates from the 1/f behavior, because of temperature fluctuations that appear to modulate a quasistatic pressure gradient, sustained by the asymmetries of the outgassing pattern. We also present the results of a projection of the observed acceleration noise on the potential sources for which we had either a direct correlation measurement or a quantitative estimate from dedicated experiments. These sources account for approximately 40% of the noise power in the 1/f tail. Finally, we analyze the possible sources of the remaining unexplained fraction and identify the possible measures that may be taken to keep those under control in LISA.

Pathfinding for Airspace with Autonomous Vehicles (PAAV) ACAS Xr Terminal Area Simulation Overview

This presentation provides an overview of an upcoming human-in-the-loop simulation planned by the Pathfinding for Airspace with Autonomous Vehicles (PAAV) subproject, as part of the Air Traffic Management eXploration project. The study will investigate Detect and Avoid (DAA) concepts in and around the DAA terminal area (DTA). The DTA has received little investigation in real-time, pilot-in-the-loop simulation. This study proposes to use current remotely piloted aircraft system (RPAS) pilots to investigate the effectiveness of current DTA requirements using the FAA's Airborne Collision Avoidance System X for Rotorcraft (ACAS Xr) as the DAA system under test. The findings of this stufy will be used to inform DTA and ACAS Xr standards development. This presentation will be provided to RTCA Special Committee 228 as an overview and as an opportunity to collect feedback from the larger RPAS/DAA community on the study design and key scenarios and metrics. The presentation provides a brief overview of open areas of research with ACAS Xr, the experimental design, the simulation environment and the simulation schedule.

The Tianlai Cylinder Pathfinder Array: System Functions and Basic Performance Analysis

The Tianlai Cylinder Pathfinder is a radio interferometer array designed to test techniques for 21 cm intensity mapping in the post-reionization Universe, with the ultimate aim of mapping the large scale structure of the Universe and measuring cosmological parameters such as the dark energy equation of state. Each of its three parallel cylinder reflectors are oriented in the north-south direction, and the array has a large field of view. As the Earth rotates, the northern sky is observed by drift scanning. The array is located in Hongliuxia, a radio quiet site in Xinjiang, and saw its first light in September 2016. In this first paper on the data analysis of the Tianlai cylinder array, we describe the system functions of the array, the commissioning observations during 2016- 2018, and present its basic performance characteristics. We show examples of the interferometric visibility data, then using the observational data, we derive the actual beam profile in the east-west direction, the bandpass response, and calibrate the complex gains for the array elements either with a strong astronomical point source, or with an artificial calibrator source. Based on the preliminary analysis of the data, we derive the system temperature and sensitivity of the array.

Pathfinding quantum simulations of neutrinoless double- β decay

We present results from co-designed quantum simulations of the neutrinoless double- β decay of a simple nucleus in 1+1D quantum chromodynamics using IonQ’s Forte-generation trapped-ion quantum computers. Electrons, neutrinos, and up and down quarks are distributed across two lattice sites and mapped to 32 qubits, with an additional 4 qubits used for flag-based error mitigation. A four-fermion interaction is used to implement weak interactions, and lepton-number violation is induced by a neutrino Majorana mass. Quantum circuits that prepare the initial nucleus and time evolve with the Hamiltonian containing the strong and weak interactions are executed on IonQ Forte Enterprise. Enabled by tuned model parameters, lepton-number violation is observed in real time, providing a clear signal of neutrinoless double- β decay. This was made possible by co-designing the simulation to maximally utilize the all-to-all connectivity and native gate-set available on IonQ’s quantum computers. Quantum circuit compilation techniques and co-designed error-mitigation methods, informed from executing benchmarking circuits with up to 2,356 two-qubit gates, enabled observables to be extracted with high precision. We discuss the potential of future quantum simulations to provide yocto-second resolution of the reaction pathways in these, and other, nuclear processes.
