Artificial stereo presentation of meteorological data fields

The innate capability to perceive three-dimensional stereo imagery has been exploited to present multidimensional meteorological data fields. Variations on an artificial stereo technique first discussed by Pichel et al. (1973) are used to display single and multispectral images in a vivid and easily assimilated manner. Examples of visible/infrared artificial stereo are given for Hurricane Allen and for severe thunderstorms on 10 April 1979. Three-dimensional output from a mesoscale model also is presented. The images may be viewed through the glasses inserted in the February 1981 issue of the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society, with the red lens over the right eye. The images have been produced on the interactive Atmospheric and Oceanographic Information Processing System (AOIPS) at Goddard Space Flight Center. Stereo presentation is an important aid in understanding meteorological phenomena for operational weather forecasting, research case studies, and model simulations.

Multitemporal and geobotanical approach in the remote detection of Greisenization areas in the Serra da Pedra Branca Granite, Goias State, Brazil

A multiseasonal analysis of LANDSAT multispectral images in CCT format permitted the mapping of lithologic facies in the Pedra Branca Granite, using geobotanical associations, which occur in the form of variations in the density of the cerrado vegetation, as well as the predominance of certain distinct vegetation species. Dry season images did not show very good results in lithological differentiation due to anomalous illumination conditions related to the low solar elevation and the homogeneity in the vegetation cover, specially the grass that becomes dry during this season. Rainy season images, on the other hand, allowed the separation of the lithological types, a fact that can be attributed to a greater differentiation among the geobotanical associations. The muscovite-granite facies with greisenization zones within the Serra da Pedra Branca were mapped. This methodology can be successfully applied to similar known granite bodies elsewhere in the Tin Province of Goias.

LANDSAT and radar mapping of intrusive rocks in SE-Brazil

The feasibility of intrusive rock mapping was investigated and criteria for regional geological mapping established at the scale of 1:500,00 in polycyclic and polymetamorphic areas using the logic method of photointerpretation of LANDSAT imagery and radar from the RADAMBRASIL project. The spectral behavior of intrusive rocks, was evaluated using the interactive multispectral image analysis system (Image-100). The region of Campos (city) in northern Rio de Janeiro State was selected as the study area and digital imagery processing and pattern recognition techniques were applied. Various maps at the 2:250,000 scale were obtained to evaluate the results of automatic data processing.

System description

The VAS, carried onboard the GOES 4 and 5 satellites, is a radiometer with 8 visible channel detectors and 6 thermal detectors that detect infrared radiation in 12 spectral bands. A filter wheel in front of the detector is used to achieve the spectral selection. The spatial resolution is 0.9 kilometer in the visible and 7 or 14 kilometers in the infrared depending on the detector used. Full Earth disk coverage is accomplished by spinning in the west to east direction at 100 rpm and by stepping a scan mirror from north to south. Additional VAS instrument characteristics are summarized. The VAS has three operating modes: the operational VISSR mode, the multispectral imaging (MSI) mode, and the dwell sounding (DS) mode. The operational VISSR mode is used by NOAA/NESS for its operational products, which include a visible picture and an 11 micrometer infrared (channel 8) picture at half hour intervals. The other modes are VAS unique. The MSI mode combines the operational VISSR capability (visible plus infrared window) with two additional spectral channels to provide half hourly full Earth disk imagery of atmospheric water vapor, temperature, and cloud distribution. The DS mode is used primarily for sounding to obtain the temperature and moisture profiles. In this mode, multiple spins on the same scan line in a given band are averaged to obtain the required signal to noise ratio for sounding.

The magnifying glass - A feature space local expansion for visual analysis

The Magnifying Glass Transformation (MGT) technique is proposed, as a multichannel spectral operation yielding visual imagery which is enhanced in a specified spectral vicinity, guided by the statistics of training samples. An application example is that in which the discrimination among spectral neighbors within an interactive display may be increased without altering distant object appearances or overall interpretation. A direct histogram specification technique is applied to the channels within the multispectral image so that a subset of the spectral domain occupies an increased fraction of the domain. The transformation is carried out by obtaining the training information, establishing the condition of the covariance matrix, determining the influenced solid, and initializing the lookup table. Finally, the image is transformed.

Multiseasonal and geobotanical approach in remote detection of greisenization areas in the Serra da Pedra Branca Granite, Goias State, Brazil

Multiseasonal analysis of LANDSAT multispectral images in CCT format permitted the mapping of lithologic facies in the Pedra Branca Granite, using geobotanical associations, which occur in the form of variations in the density of cerrado vegetation, as well as the predominance of certain distinctive vegetation species. Dry season images did not show very good results in lithological differentiation due to anomalous illumination conditions related to the low solar elevation and the homogeneity in the vegetation cover, specially the grasses that become dry during this season. Rainy season image, on the other hand, allowed the separation of the lithological types, a fact that can be attributed to a greater differentiation among the geobotanical associations. As a result of this study, the muscovite-granite facies with greisenization zones, which are lithological indicators of important tin mineralization within the Serra da Pedra Branca Granite, were mapped. This methodology can be sucessfully applied to similar known granite bodies elsewhere in the Tin Province of Goias.

Two mirror objective design for multispectral remote sensing

A two mirror flat field anastigmatic telescope was designed for multispectral sensing. The design was adapted to prism-type beamsplitting arrangements without loss of multispectral image quality by the addition of one refractive element. In addition to being relatively simple and mechanically insensitive, the design is immune to focus shift caused by index of refraction variation with temperature.

Use of satellite soundings and imagery for nowcasting and very-short-range forecasting

Examples of GOES-East satellite imagery and sounding channel information are used to show how atmospheric behavior in the vicinity of intense mesoscale weather events can be analyzed. Mesoscale spatial and temporal information on atmospheric thermal structure and moisture distribution can be determined using satellite sounding and multispectral image data. Clouds and cloud patterns in a satellite image or animated series of images represent the integrated effect of ongoing dynamic and thermodynamic processes in the atmosphere. When information from satellite data is combined with radar, surface and upper air observations, important processes in storm development can be better understood.

Sea surface temperatures from VAS MSI data

A procedure is developed for estimating sea surface temperatures from multispectral image data acquired from the VISSR atmospheric sounder on the geostationary GOES satellites. Theoretical regression equations for two and three infrared window channels are empirically tuned using clear field of view satellite radiances matched with reports of SST from NOAA fixed environmental buoys. The empirical regression equations are then used to produce daily regional analyses of SST. Monthly mean SST's for the western North Atlantic and the eastern equatorial Pacific during March and July 1982 were produced for use in the SST Intercomparison Workshop Series. Workshop results showed VAS SST's have a scatter of 0.8-1.0 C and a slight warm bias with respect to the other measurements of SST. The VAS SST's show no discernible bias in the region of El Chichon volcanic aerosol cloud.

Correlation of infrared reflectance ratios at 2.3 microns/1.6 micron and 1.1 micron/1.6 micron with delta O-18 values delineating fossil hydrothermal systems in the Idaho batholith

Reflectance ratios from laboratory spectra and airborne multispectral images are found to be strongly correlated with delta O-18 values of granite rocks in the Idaho batholith. The correlation is largely a result of interactions between hot water and rock, which lowered the delta O-18 values of the rocks and produced secondary hydrous material. Maps of the ratio of reflectivities at 2.3 and 1.6 microns should delineate fossil hydrothermal systems and provide estimates of alteration intensity. However, hydrous minerals produced during deuteric alteration or weathering cannot be unambiguously distinguished in remotely sensed images from the products of propylitic alteration without the use of narrow-band scanners. The reflectivity at 1.6 micron is strongly correlated with rock density and may be useful in distinguishing rock types in granitic terranes.

Quantitative determination of mineral types and abundances from reflectance spectra using principal components analysis

A procedure was developed for analyzing remote reflectance spectra, including multispectral images, that quantifies parameters such as types of mineral mixtures, the abundances of mixed minerals, and particle sizes. Principal components analysis reduced the spectral dimensionality and allowed testing the uniqueness and validity of spectral mixing models. By analyzing variations in the overall spectral reflectance curves, the type of spectral mixture was identified, mineral abundances quantified and the effects of particle size identified. The results demonstrate an advantage in classification accuracy over classical forms of analysis that ignore effects of particle-size or mineral-mixture systematics on spectra. The approach is applicable to remote sensing data of planetary surfaces for quantitative determinations of mineral abundances.

Resolution estimation for the Landsat-4 Thematic Mapper

Satellite-based multispectral imaging systems have been in operation since 1972 and the latest in the Landsat series of sensors was launched in July 1982. One system parameter of interest is resolution and this paper discusses experiments to determine the actual overall resolution after launch. Experimental results for the spatial resolution estimation of bands four and five of the Landsat-D Thematic Mapper are presented here.

Sea surface temperature - Observations from geostationary satellites

Multispectral image data acquired from the VISSR atmospheric sounder (VAS) on the geostationary GOES satellites were used to estimate sea surface temperatures (SST). A procedure was developed to screen VAS visible and infrared data for cloud-free regions for estimation of SST from the clear infrared radiances. A data set of matches between the VAS radiances and high quality buoy estimates of SST was produced. A linear regression analysis of these matches was performed to generate an empirical algorithm relating the VAS window channel brightness temperatures to the estimates of SST recorded by NOAA fixed environment buoys. Daily maps of SST during Hurricanes Alicia (1983) and Debbie (1982) demonstrated the ability of VAS to monitor air-sea interactions at high temporal and spatial scales.

Research in planetary astronomy

The composition, structure and processes operating on the surfaces of solar system objects were determined using the Mauna Kea observing facilities and modern instrumentation. Reflectance spectroscopy and multispectral imaging in the 0.3 to 5.0 micrometers spectral region are the major techniques used. Major focus was in qualifying and using the new imaging spectrometer and the 2-D IR detectors for spectroscopy and imaging. The major observational program emphasis was on preparing for the next Mars opposition, and searching for compositional units in the lunar highlands.

The color of the surface of Venus

Multispectral images of the basaltic surface of Venus obtained by Venera 13 were processed to remove the effects of orange-colored incident radiation resulting from interactions with the thick Venusian atmosphere. At visible wavelengths the surface of Venus appears dark and without significant color. High-temperature laboratory reflectance spectra of basaltic materials indicate that these results are consistent with mineral assemblages bearing either ferric or ferrous iron. A high reflectance in the near-infrared region observed at neighboring Venera 9 and 10 sites, however, suggests that the basaltic surface material contains ferric minerals and thus may be relatively oxidized.
