Synthesis of TiO{sub 2} nanoparticles decorated with gold nanoclusters using pulsed laser ablation in liquid

Amorphous spherical titanium dioxide (TiO{sub 2}) nanoparticles, decorated gold nanoparticles, are shown to be formed under irradiation of commercial TiO{sub 2} nanopowders dispersed in aqueous solution of hydrogen tetrachloroaurate (HAuCl{sub 4}) by second-harmonic nanosecond pulses of an Nd : YAG laser. It is found that these hybrid nanostructures are formed during laser-induced remelting of the initial nanoparticles, stimulated by gold nanoclusters (providing more efficient absorption of visible laser radiation by titanium dioxide) recovered on their surface. The morphology and chemical composition of the newly formed hybrid nanomaterials are investigated in detail by electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and energy-dispersive analysis. It is shown that the average size and number of gold nanoparticles recovered on the TiO{sub 2} surface can be controlled by varying the concentration ratio of the initial nanomaterial and HAuCl{sub 4}. A spectroscopic analysis of light scattering by single hybrid nanoparticles and the results of numerical calculation of the structure of electromagnetic fields near their surface indicate good prospects of these hybrid nanomaterials for various applications in modern optics, optoelectronics, and nanophotonics; for example, for designing chemo- and biosensor platforms and new-generation solar cells. Laser cooling of atoms at narrow optical transitions in fields with a polarisation gradient

The efficiency of the polarisation mechanisms of laser cooling of atoms is analysed using narrow optical transitions for which the recoil energy is greater than or comparable to the natural line width. By the example of atoms with the J{sub g} = 1 → J{sub e} = 2 optical transition (J{sub g} and J{sub e} are the total angular momenta of the ground and excited states) in the resonant light fields of σ{sub +} – σ{sub –} and lin⊥lin configurations, the analysis of the minimum achievable energies of laser-cooled atoms is performed. It is shown that the polarisation mechanisms of laser cooling under conditions of a significant influence of recoil effects become less efficient and do not lead to average kinetic energies of an ensemble of atoms below the Doppler limit. Miniature quantum frequency standard based on the phenomenon of coherent population trapping in vapours of {sup 87}Rb atoms

We report the results of the development and production of a quantum frequency standard (QFS) based on the coherent population trapping (CPT) resonance observed on the D{sub 1} absorption line of {sup 87}Rb atoms. The effect of various physical factors on the QFS frequency is studied, and the optimal physical parameters of the device to attain the best frequency stability are determined. The measured relative frequency instability (Allan deviation) is ∼9 × 10{sup −12} for the averaging time of 1 s, 3 ×10{sup −13} for 1000 s, and 1.5 ×10{sup −12} for 24 hours. For a volume of 60 cm{sup 3}, the power consumption of the entire device is 300 mW. The designed QFS can be used in a new-generation satellite navigation systems with increased accuracy and reliability, as well as for solving a number of other problems of science and technology. Sum of oscillator-strength moments and asymptotic behaviour of thermally induced broadening and shift of energy levels of Rydberg atom circular states

Based on the rules for summing oscillator-strength moments, we derive analytical expressions for environmentally (thermally) induced energy-level shifts and broadenings of circular Rydberg states with maximum orbital (l) and magnetic (m) quantum numbers, l = |m| = n – 1. The formulae for the energy of interaction with blackbody radiation are presented in the form of series expansion in even powers of the small parameter η = Z{sup 2}/(n{sup 3}k{sub B}T) ≪ 1 in the region of high temperatures T and principal quantum numbers n (Z is the charge of the residual ion). The expression for the thermally induced width contains a negative temperature-independent term coinciding in absolute value with the spontaneous width, so that the temperature-independent term is absent in the expression for the sum of the spontaneous and thermally induced widths. A similar expansion in powers of η for the thermally induced shift also contains a temperature-independent term proportional to 1/n{sup 6}. (paper)

Unipolar light: existence, generation, propagation, and impact on microobjects

A review is presented of recent works on optical unipolar pulses, whose electric area (integral of the electric field strength over time) is nonzero, which determines the predominant direction of the electric field strength. It is shown that the existence of unipolar pulses does not contradict Maxwell’s equations, and that unipolar pulses can propagate in waveguides. It is emphasised that, along with the spectral, energy, and polarisation parameters, the electric area of short light pulses is also an important characteristic. The unidirectional action of these pulses on microobjects indicates that it is promising to develop methods for generating radiation with such properties. We disciuss methods for the generation, propagation, and interaction of unipolar light with classical and quantum systems, as well as methods for recording the electric area of light pulses. Lasing characteristics of ZrO{sub 2} − Y{sub 2}O{sub 3} − Ho{sub 2}O{sub 3} crystals pumped by a Tm : LiYF{sub 4} laser

Two-micron lasing is obtained on the {sup 5}I{sub 7} → {sup 5}I{sub 8} transition of Ho{sup 3+} ions in ZrO{sub 2} − Y{sub 2}O{sub 3} −Ho{sub 2}O{sub 3} crystals upon resonance pumping into the {sup 5}I{sub 7} level of these ions by a pulsed laser based on a Tm : LiYF{sub 4} crystal. The efficiency of conversion of pump radiation incident on the crystal to laser radiation and the slope lasing efficiency at a pulse duration of 8 ms and a pulse repetition rate of 10 Hz were 25% and 28%, respectively. Detection of the clock transition in thulium atoms by using repump laser radiation

A population transfer from the upper level of the clock transition in thulium atoms to the ground level is demonstrated by using radiation with a wavelength of 402 nm. The method for detecting the clock transition excitation that is not affected by technical fluctuations of the number of atoms in an optical lattice is investigated. The hyperfine splitting of the |4f{sup 12}({sup 3}F{sub 2})5d{sub 5/2} 6s{sup 2}; J = 7/2〉 level in the thulium atom is measured to be 1480(9) MHz. The suggested method for population transfer can be applied to both the hyperfine components of the clock transition intended for compensating Zeeman effect in a thulium optical clock. (paper)

Trapping of lithium atoms in a large hollow optical dipole trap

We describe the trapping of lithium atoms in an optical dipole trap about 1 mm in size, with a nearly rectangular potential. The trap has the shape of a cylinder with flat bases. The confinement region is bounded by thin walls produced by light with a frequency blue-detuned from an atomic transition (resonance) frequency by 19 GHz. Before trapping, the gas is collected and cooled in a magneto-optical trap whose centre nearly coincides with the centre of the dipole trap. After switching off the magneto-optical trap, we have photographed the atoms remaining in the dipole trap. (paper)

Study of saturated-absorption resonances on the {sup 3}P{sub 0, 1, 2} – {sup 3}D{sub 1, 2, 3} transitions of magnesium atoms in a hollow-cathode discharge cell

The saturated-absorption resonances on the {sup 3}P{sub 0, 1, 2} – {sup 3}D{sub 1, 2, 3} transitions of magnesium atoms in a hollow-cathode discharge cell are studied. The line width (FWHM) for the observed saturated-absorption resonance on the 3{sup 3}P{sub 0} → 3{sup 3}D{sub 1} transition turns out to be ∼220 MHz. Experiments are performed using a system based on a 766-nm diode laser with amplification and frequency doubling in a nonlinear BiBO crystal. The results obtained are of interest for sub-Doppler cooling on the 3{sup 3}P{sub 2} → 3{sup 3}D{sub 3} transition. (paper)

Resonances of electromagnetically induced transparency and absorption in a light field of elliptically polarised waves

Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA) resonances excited by a strong two-frequency field are considered for various values of the total angular momenta of the ground (F{sub g}) and excited (F{sub e}) states at a degenerated optical closed transition F{sub g} → F{sub e}. The light field is formed by two co-propagating waves with arbitrary elliptical polarisations. The process of spontaneous transfer of anisotropy from the excited state to the ground state is shown to determine the formation of the EIA resonance at the transition F{sub g} = F → F{sub e} = F + 1. The results obtained generalise the classification of transitions into ‘bright’ (F{sub g} = F → F{sub e} = F + 1) and ‘dark’ (F{sub g} = F → F{sub e} = F and F{sub g} = F → F{sub e} = F – 1) transitions with respect to the direction of a subnatural resonance. Compensation of residual amplitude modulation fluctuations in an optoelectronic system for laser radiation frequency stabilisation

Fluctuations of residual amplitude modulation in a scheme of laser frequency stabilisation by a Fabry – Perot cavity reduce the frequency stability of the laser systems intended for interrogating clock transitions of atoms and ions. The dependences of the residual amplitude modulation on a temperature of the waveguide-based electro-optical modulator used for modulating the radiation phase and on polarisation of the radiation are measured. The parameters are found, at which the influence of the residual amplitude modulation on the frequency stability is minimal. A system for active compensation is created, which reduces the contribution of fluctuations of residual amplitude modulation to the instability down to 2.1 × 10{sup −16}, which makes it possible to reach the thermal noise limit of a silicon cryogenic cavity. Scheme for stabilising the phase and arrival time of ultrashort laser pulses in a coherent beam combining fibre system

An algorithm has been demonstrated for simultaneously measuring the phase and arrival time of optical pulses relative to pulses in a reference channel using one detector array. Based on this algorithm, a simple optoelectronic pulse phase and arrival time stabilisation scheme has been designed for operation in a coherent beam combining fibre system for ultrashort pulses (including chirped ones). We have studied the performance of the stabilisation scheme. In particular, we have reached a phase measurement rate of 25 000 cps, demonstrated an ∼ 2 kHz limiting phase stabilisation frequency in a feedback loop, and obtained an arrival time measurement accuracy of ∼ 5 % of the transform-limited pulse duration at a measurement rate of 5 cps. In experiments concerned with coherent beam combining for two channels of a pulsed fibre system at a wavelength of 1030 nm, we have demonstrated phase stabilisation with an accuracy better than λ/100 and delay setting accuracy of 10 fs at a transform-limited pulse duration of ∼ 200 fs and obtained 94 % beam combining efficiency. Compact ultrastable laser system for spectroscopy of {sup 2}S{sub 1/2} → {sup 2}D{sub 3/2} quadrupole transition in {sup 171}Yb{sup +} ion

We report the results of studying a compact laser system designed for manipulating a quantum state of the optical qubit based on the {sup 2}S{sub 1/2} → {sup 2}D{sub 3/2} quadrupole transition in the {sup 171}Yb{sup +} ion at a wavelength of 435.5 nm. An emission power of the laser system reaches 500 μW at λ = 435.5 nm and the relative frequency instability of at most 3 × 10{sup −15} is achieved at averaging intervals from 0.5 to 50 s with a subtracted linear frequency drift. The compactness of the developed system makes it possible to employ it in transportable systems including optical clocks. (laser spectroscopy)

Acousto-optic modulators of high-power laser radiation on the basis of KGW and KYW crystals

Different modifications of acousto-optic modulators (AOMs) based on KG(WO{sub 4}){sub 2} (KGW) and KY(WO{sub 4}){sub 2} (KYW) crystals, designed for Q switching of high-power pulsed lasers, is developed and investigated. It is shown that AOMs based on these crystals are universal, can be combined with different lasers in the wavelength range of 1 – 3 μm, and have a high radiation resistance in the absence of antireflection coatings and light input at Brewster’s angle. The operation efficiency of KGW-based AOMs is experimentally demonstrated. Solid-state lasers based on Cr : Er : YSGG (λ = 2.78 μm), Cr : Yb : Ho : YSGG (λ = 2.87 μm), Cr : Tm : Ho : YSGG (λ = 2.09 μm), and Nd : YAG (λ = 1.064 μm) crystals with active acousto-optic Q switching, operating in the repetitively pulsed regime with a high beam quality and without surface destruction, are investigated. Lasing pulses (30 – 60)-ns long with energy up to 32 mJ at a repetition rate from 1 to 1000 Hz are obtained. (paper)

Generation of high-power few-cycle femtosecond IR pulses by double-chirp parametric amplification

We present an energy scalable configuration for the generation of high-power few-cycle femtosecond IR pulses based on the sequential parametric amplification of chirped radiation pulses at the idler (0.86 μm) and signal (1.39 μm) wavelengths from the multi-terawatt femtosecond laser system made at the Institute of Laser Physics, Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (ILP SB RAS). The configuration under consideration involves the sequential production of radiation pulses with centre wavelengths of 2.24, 3.56, and 7.25 μm. The conditions are determined for the generation of few-cycle pulses with a terawatt peak power in the 3.56 μm (15.8 fs, 1.5 cycles) and 7.25 μm (17.2 fs, shorter than one cycle) domains. The phase transfer between signal and idler waves in the double-chirp parametric amplification is investigated for the first time. (paper)

AlGaInAs/InP semiconductor lasers with an ultra-narrow waveguide and an increased electron barrier

Semiconductor lasers based on AlGaInAs/InP heterostructures with an ultra-narrow waveguide and an increased electron barrier layer are developed. It is shown that the use of this waveguide in conjunction with profiled doping ensures a balance between internal optical losses and heat resistance. Additional use of strained wide-bandgap layers as blocking barriers limiting electron leakage from the active region makes it possible to increase the output power at the same pump current. The developed lasers with a stripe contact 100 μm wide demonstrate at room temperature an output optical power of 4.0 – 4.4 W (pump current 14 A) in a continuous-wave regime and 15 – 17 W (100 A) in a pulsed regime (100 ns, 1 kHz) at wavelengths of 1450 – 1500 nm. Seven-core fibre Raman laser with intercore coupling

This paper reports results of a study aimed at producing a Raman fibre laser based on a multicore fibre with high-reflectivity fibre Bragg gratings inscribed in its peripheral cores using femtosecond laser pulses. We present spectral and power characteristics of a Raman laser whose output power at a wavelength of 1090 nm is 2.5 W. The laser emission linewidth has been shown to decrease as a result of the reduction in nonlinear effects owing to the larger effective mode area in the multicore fibre in comparison with a standard single-mode fibre Raman laser.
