Cold machining of high density tungsten and other materials

Cold machining process, which uses a sub-zero refrigerated cutting fluid, is used for machining refractory or reactive metals and alloys. Special carbide tools for turning and drilling these alloys further improve the cutting performance.

High density plasma gun generates plasmas at 190 kilometers per second

Gun has thin metal foil disc which positions or localizes gas to be ionized during electrical discharge cycle, overcoming major limiting factor in obtaining such plasmas. Expanding plasma front travels at 190 km/sec, compared to plasmas of 50 to 60 km/sec previously achieved.

Infrared Absorption of Carbon Dioxide at High Densities With Application to the Atmosphere of Venus

Several new infrared absorptions were found in carbon dioxide. All are normally forbidden, and were collision-induced in an absorbing cell whose combination of pressure and path length has a unique sensitivity for induced absorptions. The new absorptions in the 2.3 micron region are attributed to transitions from ground to the 3(1)1 Fermi pair at 4248 and 4391/cm. Other absorptions are attributed to simultaneous CO2-N2 transitions and to the 00(0)0-00(0)2 transition in CO2 polarizability derivatives and regular progressions in strength versus increasing quantum number. The spectra were used to predict the radiative transfer in a dry CO2 model of the lower Venus atmosphere. The results indicate that the radiation balance in the lower atmosphere is adequately explained by a dry massive atmosphere of CO2 with a layer of infrared-opaque clouds. The absorptions in the 2.3 micron region are significant in accounting for the opacity to sustain Venus' 768 K surface temperature.

High-density digital data recording/reproducing system

Problems associated with reliably recording and reproducing digital data at densities of 10 to 30 kilobits per inch and the solutions to these problems are discussed. The three problems are skew, dc offset, and tape imperfections. The solutions are to use a 14-track, wideband II tape recorder; record NRZ-L; use a 24-bit sync word, 504-bit frame length, and odd parity in every 8-bit byte; and to employ circuit design techniques that minimize the effects of the remaining dc offset and tape imperfections.

High Efficiency, High Density Terrestrial Panel

Terrestrial panels were fabricated using rectangular cells. Packing densities in excess of 90% with panel conversion efficiencies greater than 13% were obtained. Higher density panels can be produced on a cost competitive basis with the standard salami panels.

Development of moldable, high density reaction bonded silicon nitride

It is noted that currently available reaction bonded silicon nitride (RBSN) materials are limited by relatively low strength (up to 300 MPa) and oxidation resistance, primarily due to open porosity. Attention is given to technology that was developed and used to produce an improved grade of injection molded RBSN having a density of 2.8 g/cc, with significantly decreased open porosity and a strength exceeding 350 MPa. It is shown that these results are primarily due to advances in two areas: silicon powder processing, and nitriding technique. A comparison of room temperature strength and oxidation resistance of the new material with that of state-of-the-art RBSN, showed significant improvements. It is concluded that turbine stator vanes were produced to show that this improved RBSN technology has been reduced to engineering practice.

High-Density Terminal Box for Testing Wire Harness

Compact terminal box provides access to complex wiring harnesses for testing. Box accommodates more than twice as many wires as previous boxes. Box takes in wires via cable connectors and distributes them to contacts on box face. Instead of separate insulated jacks in metal face panel, box uses pairs of small military-standard metal sockets in precision-drilled plastic panel. Shorting plug provides continuity for wires when not being tested.

Simulation studies of a model of high-density metallic hydrogen

Upper bounds for the ground-state energies of liquid and solid phases of metallic hydrogen and metallic deuterium have been calculated with variational methods and Monte Carlo techniques. At four densities (0.8, 1.2, 1.36, and 1.488) crystalline phases are clearly preferred in the sense that the energy difference, when compared to the liquid, is in excess of the errors inherent in the numerical procedures. At a fifth density (1.6), the energy differences between solid and liquid phases are smaller than these errors.
