Development of a high capacity variable conductance heat pipe.

The high-capacity, pressure-primed, tunnel-artery wick concept was used in a gas-controlled variable conductance heat pipe. A variety of techniques were employed to control the size of gas/vapor bubbles trapped within the artery. Successful operation was attained with a nominal 6-foot long, 1-inch diameter cold reservoir VCHP using ammonia working fluid and nitrogen control gas. The pipe contained a heat exchanger to subcool the liquid in the artery. Maximum transport capacity with a 46-inch effective length was 1200 watts level (more than 50,000 watt-inches) and 800 watts at 0.5-inch adverse tilt.

Lattice dynamics of high-pressure hydrides studied by inelastic neutron scattering

Due to the small mass and anomalously large neutron scattering cross-section of proton (about 80 barns compared to a few barns for other nuclei), inelastic neutron scattering is considered as one of the most effective tools in studying optical vibrations of hydrogen atoms in metal hydrides. The current review is focused on the binary hydrides of 3d- and 4d-metals of groups VI–VIII, which were produced at high hydrogen pressures of several gigapascals in relatively large quantities of hundreds of mg, quenched to low temperature and studied by INS ex situ at ambient pressure with high statistical accuracy. One of the unusual effects revealed by INS is a strong increase in the strength of the metal-hydrogen interactions with decreasing atomic number of the d-metal accompanied by an increase in the Me-H distance. Based on the available experimental results, the spectra g(E) of the phonon density of states and temperature dependencies CV(T) of the heat capacity at constant volume at T up to 1000 K have been derived in this paper and presented both in the figures and in digital form. This provides the reference data for the theoretical investigations of the crystal structures and compositions of new practically important hydrides giving the opportunity to validate calculation methods by comparing the calculated g(E) and CV(T) with the accurate experimental dependencies for the binary hydrides. Recent INS studies showed [R.A. Klein et al., J. Alloy. Compd. 894 (2022) 162381] that the fingerprints of anomalously short H-H separations of 1.6 Å violating the “2 Å rule” can be easily and unambiguously identified in the complex INS spectra of quaternary hydrides (La,Ce)NiInH 1+x . This makes neutron spectroscopy an attractive means for obtaining valuable data in the search for novel hydrides with a record high hydrogen capacity.

Significant enhancement of magnetocaloric effect in a NiMnCuGa Heusler alloy through textural modification

Magnetocaloric materials are of increasing interest to bring magnetic refrigeration to everyday households and drastically impact the energy demands for temperature control devices. In this work, a polycrystalline Heusler alloy of composition Ni2Mn0.76Cu0.24Ga with coinciding structural and magnetic transformation temperatures was subjected to compressive stress assisted thermal cycling (SATC) to enhance the magnetic properties by inducing a preferred orientation in the martensite. Isofield magnetization measurements showed a sharpening of the transformation between ferromagnetic martensite and paramagnetic austenite due to SATC. In isothermal magnetization measurements, SATC was seen to increase the magnetostructural coupling. With a 2 T applied magnetic field, the magnetocaloric effect (MCE) increased from ∼10 to ∼25 J/kg K and the refrigeration capacity (RC) almost doubled due to SATC. Heat capacity measurements were largely unaffected by SATC. The change in adiabatic temperature was estimated by using Cp and change in magnetic entropy (ΔSM) calculations. SATC was seen to increase ΔTad from ∼1.2 K to 2 K for an applied magnetic field of 2 T. Neutron diffraction measurements revealed highly textured martensite in the as received state that rotated to a more ideal preferred orientation after SATC that enhanced the magnetostructural transformation; and thus, improving the MCE and ΔTad.

Low-temperature heat pipe experiment package (HEPP) for LDEF (S1001)

The principal objectives of the experiment are to determine zero-g start-up performance for conventional and diode low temperature heat pipes, to evaluate heat pipe performance in zero-g for an extended period of time, to determine zero-g transport capability of each heat pipe, and to determine diode operation, including forward conductance, turndown ratio, and transient behavior. Two heat pipes, a fixed conductance transporter heat pipe and a thermal diode heat pipe, are coupled with a radiant cooler system. Both pipes are charged with ethane. Also integrated with the radiator is a phase change material (PCM) canister which provides temperature stability during transport tests. N-heptane, which has a melting/freezing point of 182 K, is used as the PCM. The high heat capacity (28 W-hr of latent heat) provided by the canister permits high power heat pipe testing at constant temperature.

Advances in Small Pixel TES-Based X-Ray Microcalorimeter Arrays for Solar Physics and Astrophysics

We are developing small-pixel transition-edge-sensor (TES) for solar physics and astrophysics applications. These large format close-packed arrays are fabricated on solid silicon substrates and are designed to accommodate count-rates of up to a few hundred counts/pixel/second at a FWHM energy resolution approximately 2 eV at 6 keV. We have fabricated versions that utilize narrow-line planar and stripline wiring. We present measurements of the performance and uniformity of kilo-pixel arrays, incorporating TESs with single 65-micron absorbers on a 7s-micron pitch, as well as versions with more than one absorber attached to the TES, 4-absorber and 9-absorber "Hydras". We have also fabricated a version of this detector optimized for lower energies and lower count-rate applications. These devices have a lower superconducting transition temperature and are operated just above the 40mK heat sink temperature. This results in a lower heat capacity and low thermal conductance to the heat sink. With individual single pixels of this type we have achieved a FWHM energy resolution of 0.9 eV with 1.5 keV Al K x-rays, to our knowledge the first x-ray microcalorimeter with sub-eV energy resolution. The 4-absorber and 9-absorber versions of this type achieved FWHM energy resolutions of 1.4 eV and 2.1 eV at 1.5 keV respectively. We will discuss the application of these devices for new astrophysics mission concepts.

Optimization Considerations for Annular Linear Electromagnetic Pumps for Space Nuclear Power and Propulsion

The Need for High Performance Liquid Metal Pumps Testing Power and Efficiency Considerations Liquid metal cooled reactors is one option for space nuclear power for settlements and electric propulsion vehicles (Snap 10 A, SP100, Soviet Topaz reactors) • High heat capacity • High boiling point (NaK~1200K) • Simplified heat transfer loop • Good neutronics Liquid metal EM pumps are desired over conventional pumps owing to lack of seals, bearings elimination of cavitation issues, lower mass and eliminates mechanical impeller • Conduction pumps (typically DC-high current, low voltage; ~5% efficiency) • Induction pumps (typically AC, high efficiency ~40%) Annular linear induction pump is an EM pump with no moving parts and of cylindrical/tubular geometry which makes it straightforward to integrate in conventional piping architectures • Higher inherent reliability • Invented by Einstein and Szilard

From a conventional ferromagnetism to a frustrated magnetism: An unexpected role of Fe in Nd(Al 1-x Fe x ) 2 (x ≤ 0.2)

The structure and magnetic properties of Nd(Al 1-x Fe x ) 2 alloys with x = 0, 0.05, 0.1 and 0.2, which adopt cubic MgCu 2 -type structure with space group Fd3¯m, are studied using x-ray powder diffraction, static and dynamic magnetization, and calorimetric measurements. The lattice constant decreases linearly with increasing Fe content from 8.0106(4) Å to 7.9044(4) Å. Large thermal irreversibilities between zero-field-cooled and field-cooled conditions are observed for all substituted samples. Here, the magnetic transition temperatures exhibit a minimum for x = 0.1, and coercive fields at 2 K increase from 70 Oe for x = 0 to 6.3 kOe for x = 0.2. The absence of λ-type peak in the heat capacity data, frequency dependence of ac magnetic susceptibility, and memory effects indicate formation of a cluster-glass magnetic state when x ≥ 0.1.

Type-II superconductivity at 9K in Pb–Bi alloy

In the present work, we report the synthesis of Pb–Bi alloy with enhanced Tc of up to 9K, which is higher than that of Pb. The alloy is synthesized via a solid-state reaction route in the vacuum-encapsulated quartz tube at 700°C in an automated furnace. The synthesized sample is characterized by X-ray Diffraction(XRD) and Energy dispersive X-ray analysis(EDAX) for its phase purity and elemental composition. Rietveld refinement of XRD reveals that the end product is a majority hexagonal Pb 7 Bi 3 , with minor rhombohedral Bi. The electronic transport measurement shows metallic behavior with the Debye temperature of 108K and a superconductivity transition temperature (T c ) below 9K, which is the maximum to date for any reported Pb–Bi alloy, Pb or Bi at ambient pressure. Partial substitution of Bi at the Pb site may modify the free density of electronic states within the BCS model to attain the optimum T c , which is higher by around 2K from the reported T c of Pb. The superconductor phase diagram derived from magneto-transport measurements reveals that the synthesized alloy is a conventional superconductor with an upper critical field (H c2 ) of 3.9 T, which lies well within the Pauli paramagnetic limit. The magnetization measurements carried out following ZFC(Zero Field Cool) protocols infer that the synthesized alloy is a bulk superconductor below 9K. The isothermal M-H(Magnetization vs. Field) measurements performed below T c establish it as a type-II superconductor. Furthermore, the specific heat capacity measurements show that the Pb–Bi alloy is a strongly coupled bulk superconductor below around 9K with possibly two superconducting gaps.

Magnetothermal properties of Tm x Dy 1- x Al 2 ( x = 0.25, 0.50 and 0.75)

Here, we describe magnetic, thermal, and magnetocaloric properties of rare earth intermetallic compounds Tm x Dy 1-x Al 2 with 0.25, 0.5 and 0.75. Using model Hamiltonian we consider contributions of the crystalline electric field anisotropy in both Tm and Dy magnetic sublattices, disorder in exchange interactions among Tm-Tm, Dy-Dy and Tm-Dy magnetic ions, and the Zeeman effect. Employing earlier reported and new experimental measurements, we first determine a single free variable – the intersublattice magnetic exchange parameter – to properly model the temperature and magnetic field dependencies of heat capacity and magnetization, and then use the modeling results to explain the emergence of an anomalous spin reorientation transition and its influence on the magnetocaloric effect in the title compounds. Theoretical results agree with experimental data reasonably well.

Planar XY magnetic glass state in the Gd 2 ScNbO 7 pyrochlore

Here a spin glass system with emergent planar ordered spin clusters is investigated. The mixed B-site pyrochlore Gd 2 ScNbO 7 has been synthesized and characterized through a variety of techniques, including x-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility, muon spin relaxation, heat capacity and neutron scattering. Despite a Curie–Weiss temperature of -3.93(3) K, indicating net antiferromagnetic interactions, no signs of long ranged magnetic ordering are found down to T = 0.3 K. Instead, a disordered magnetic state emerges with a small correlation length of 2.1(1) Å of single tetrahedra. A Reverse Monte Carlo analysis of the polarized neutron scattering data reveals short-range antiferromagnetic order with emergent XY spin ordering similar to the parent pyrochlore compounds. Muon spin relaxation, and AC susceptibility measurements confirm that the magnetization condenses into a glass, with 10 % of the potential entropy missing in the specific heat. This magnetic ground state is similar to what is observed in Gd 2 Sn 2 O 7 just above the ordering temperature, without the eventual long-range ordering at low temperature.

Synthesis, structure, electronic and thermal properties of sphalerite CuZn 2 InS 4

Quaternary chalcogenides continue to be of interest due to the variety of physical properties they possess, as well as their potential for different applications of interest. Investigations on materials with the sphalerite crystal structure have only recently begun. In this study we have synthesized sulfur-based sphalerite quaternary chalcogenides, including off-stoichiometric compositions, and investigated the temperature-dependent electronic, thermal and structural properties of these materials. Insulating to semiconducting transport is observed with stoichiometric variation, and analyses of heat capacity and thermal expansion revealed lattice anharmonicity that contributes to the low thermal conductivity these materials possess. Finally, we include similar analyses for CuZn 2 InSe 4 and compare these sphalerite quaternary chalcogenides to that of zinc blende binaries in order to fully understand the origin of the low thermal conductivity these quaternary chalcogenides possess.
