Search for flavor-changing neutral current interactions of the top quark mediated by a Higgs boson in proton-proton collisions at 13 TeV

A search for flavor-changing neutral current interactions of the top quark (𝑡) and the Higgs boson (𝐻) is presented. The search is based on proton-proton collision data collected in 2016–2018 at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV with the CMS detector at the LHC, and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb −1 . Events containing a pair of leptons with the same-sign electric charge and at least one jet are considered. The results are used to constrain the branching fraction (ℬ) of the top quark decaying to a Higgs boson and an up (𝑢) or charm (𝑐) quark. No significant excess above the estimated background was found. The observed (expected) upper limits at a 95% confidence level are found to be 0.072% (0.059%) for ℬ⁡(𝑡 → 𝐻⁡𝑢) and 0.043% (0.062%) for ℬ⁡(𝑡 → 𝐻⁡𝑐). These results are combined with two other searches performed by the CMS Collaboration for flavor-changing neutral current interactions of top quarks and Higgs bosons in final states where the Higgs boson decays to either a pair of photons or a pair of bottom quarks. The resulting observed (expected) upper limits at the 95% confidence level are 0.019% (0.027%) for ℬ⁡(𝑡 → 𝐻⁡𝑢) and 0.037% (0.035%) for ℬ⁡(𝑡 → 𝐻⁡𝑐).

Long-baseline Sterile Neutrino Searches in the NOvA Experiment

Experimental high energy physics constitutes the experimental investigation of the fundamental building blocks of matter and radiation and their interactions. These fundamental building blocks are classified as bosons and fermions. Neutrinos are fermions that come under the lepton category. According to the Standard Model of particle physics, they are massless, neutral particles that interacts with matter only through weak force and comes in three different flavors. Neutrinos exhibit a characteristic property, known as the neutrino oscillation. Neutrino oscillation is the the change of neutrino from one flavor to another flavor as they propagates in space. This phenomenon is only possible if the neutrinos are massive. The reported anomalous result from LSND and MiniBooNE experiments demanded the existence of a fourth kind of neutrino, at the same time, LEP experimental result confirms that only three active neutrino can exist. So if they exists, this fourth kind of neutrino can’t interact through weak force or they can be called as sterile neutrino. Some of the experiments favored the existence of sterile neutrinos, at the same time, there are some other experiments that disfavors their existence. So the search for the sterile neutrinos is very active in the field of experimental neutrino physics. NOvA is a long-baseline experiment with two functionally identical detectors, a Near Detector (ND) at Fermilab and a Far Detector at Ash River, Minnesota which is 810 km far away from the ND. They are offaxis detectors that lie 14.6 mrad off from the beam axis. This enables the detector to receive a neutrino beam with energy peak at 2 GeV. The NOvA experiment is designed to run with both the neutrino beam and antineutrino beam and NOvA has the potential to search for the existence of sterile neutrinos. This thesis is based on the sterile neutrino search by looking at the depletion of the neutral-current (NC) energy spectrum of neutrinos at the FD. Since NC events are not sensitive to three flavor oscillation, any depletion of NC events at the FD indicates the existence of sterile neutrinos.

Testing lepton flavor universality at future Z factories

As one of the hypothetical principles in the Standard Model (SM), lepton flavor universality (LFU) should be tested with a precision as high as possible such that the physics violating this principle can be fully examined. The run of a Z factory at a future e + e − collider, such as the Circular Electron-Positron Collider or Future Circular Collider (electron/positron), provides a great opportunity to perform this task because of the large statistics and high reconstruction efficiencies for b hadrons at the Z pole. In this paper, we present a systematic study on the LFU test in future Z factories. The goal is threefold. First, we study the sensitivities of measuring the LFU-violating observables of b → c τ ν , i.e., R J / ψ , R D s , R D s * , and R Λ c , where τ decays muonically. For this purpose, we develop the strategies for event reconstruction, based on the track information significantly. Second, we explore the sensitivity robustness against detector performance and its potential improvement with the message of event shape or beyond the b -hadron decays. A picture is drawn on the variation of analysis sensitivities with the detector tracking resolution and soft photon detectability, and the impact of Fox-Wolfram moments is studied on the measurement of relevant flavor events. Finally, we interpret the projected sensitivities in the SM effective field theory, by combining the LFU tests of b → c τ ν and the measurements of b → s τ + τ − and b → s ν ¯ ν . We show that the limits on the LFU-violating energy scale can be pushed up to ∼ O ( 10 ) TeV for ≲ O ( 1 ) Wilson coefficients at Tera- Z . Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Heavy-quark spin symmetry breaking in the Born-Oppenheimer approximation

Heavy-quark spin symmetry is explicitly broken by the mass splitting between a heavy-light pseudoscalar meson and its vector partner. This fact plays a pivotal role in the physics of states whose mass lies close to the threshold of an open-flavor meson pair, like X (3872). We show that this source of heavy-quark spin symmetry breaking can be systematically included within the diabatic representation of the Born-Oppenheimer approximation. We verify that including all the appropriate coupled channels guarantees conservation of total angular momentum, parity, and charge-conjugation parity. This marks a fundamental step towards a unified, first-principles study of quarkonia and meson molecules with hidden flavor.

Weak-coupling theory of magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene

Strong correlations occur in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (MATBG) when the octet of flat moiré minibands centered on charge neutrality (CN) is partially occupied. The octet consists of a single valence band and a single conduction band for each of four degenerate spin-valley flavors. Motivated by the importance of Hartree electrostatic interactions in determining the filling-factor-dependent band structure, we use a time-dependent Hartree approximation to gain insight into electronic correlations. We find that the electronic compressibility is dominated by Hartree interactions, that paramagnetic states are stable over a range of density near CN, and that the dependence of energy on flavor polarization is strongly overestimated by mean-field theory. Muon-induced baryon number violation

The search for charged-lepton flavor violation in muon capture on nuclei is a powerful probe of heavy new physics. A smoking gun signal for μ → e conversion is a monochromatic electron with energy almost equal to the muon mass. We show that light new physics can mimic this signature and that it can also lead to electrons above the μ → e signal peak. A concrete example of such light new physics is μ − -nucleon annihilation into a light dark sector, which can produce an energetic e − as well as e + e − by-products. Due to the size of the muon mass, the exotic muon capture process can be kinematically allowed, while the otherwise stringent constraints, e.g., from proton decay, are kinematically forbidden. We also discuss other relevant constraints, including those from the stability of nuclei and muon capture in the interior of neutron stars. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

$B \to π$, $B_{(s)} \to D_{(s)}$ from 2+1+1 Flavor Lattice QCD

We present a lattice-QCD calculation of the hadronic form factors for $B$-meson semileptonic decays computed using the highly improved staggered quark action for both valence and sea quarks on the MILC collaborations 2+1+1-flavor ensembles with lattice spacing ranging from 0.09 fm to 0.03 fm, many with physical pion masses On our finest ensembles, we compute the form factors directly at the physical $b$-quark mass. We discuss the computational setup and analysis strategies for two- and three-point correlation functions. For $B_{(s)} \to D_{(s)}$ we present preliminary results of chiral-continuum fits for the scalar and vector form factors. The goal of this project is a percent-level determination of the scalar and vector form factors to enable high-precision determinations of $|V_{ub}|$ and $|V_{cb}|$. This work fits into a broader program of lattice-QCD studies of weak $B$-meson decays by the Fermilab Lattice and MILC Collaborations.

A Proposed Forward Silicon Tracker for the Future Electron-Ion Collider and Associated Physics Studies

The future Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) will explore several fundamental questions in a broad Bjorken-x (x BJ ) and Q 2 phase space. Heavy flavor and jet products are ideal probes to precisely study the tomography of nucleon/nuclei structure, help solve the proton spin puzzle and understand the hadronizaton processes in vacuum or in the QCD medium. Due to the asymmetric collisions at the EIC, most of the final state hadrons are produced in the nucleon/nuclei beam going (forward) direction. A silicon vertex/tracking is critical to precisely measure these forward hadrons at the EIC. Details of different conceptual designs of the proposed Forward Silicon Tracker (FST) and the relevant detector performance are presented in this technical note. The associated heavy flavor and jet studies with the evaluated FST performance are discussed as well.

Quantifying heavy quark transport coefficients with an improved transport model

We report that the heavy-flavor transport coefficients contain important information on the strong interaction at finite temperatures. The extraction of these numbers from experimental data requires dynamical modeling of heavy-flavor transport that is coupled to realistic medium evolution. Furthermore, meaningful extractions necessitate both a faithful implementation of the physical inputs to be tested and the quantification of model uncertainty. For these purposes, we have developed a partonic transport model LIDO. It has an improved treatment of in-medium parton bremsstrahlung, which has been calibrated to theoretical calculations in a simple medium to reduce modeling uncertainty. Regarding the interaction between heavy quark and the medium, few-body perturbative scatterings are applied to large-momentum transfer (q) processes, while a diffusion equation models the dynamics of small-q processes. Such a separation restricts the explicit use of medium quasi-particles to large-q processes only. Another advantage is that deviations from the leading-order probe-medium coupling can be parametrized as an additional contribution to the diffusion constant. The heavy quark transport coefficients are then extracted with uncertainty estimation from a Bayesian analysis including both the RHIC and the LHC data. The results are found to be consistent with earlier extraction of the light-quark transport coefficients at high momentum and be comparable with lattice calculations of the heavy-flavor diffusion constant in the static limit at low momentum.

Flavor fragmentation function factorization

A definition of partonic jet flavor that is both theoretically well-defined and experimentally robust would have profound implications for measurements and predictions especially for heavy flavor applications. Recently, a definition of jet flavor was introduced as the net flavor flowing along the direction of the Winner-Take-All axis of a jet which is soft safe to all orders, but not collinear safe. Here, we exploit the lack of collinear safety and propose a factorization theorem of perturbative flavor fragmentation functions that resum collinear divergences and describe the evolution of flavor from the short distance of jet production to the long distance at which hadronization occurs. Collinear flavor evolution is governed by a small modification of the DGLAP equations. We present a detailed all-orders analysis and identify exact relations that must hold amongst the various anomalous dimensions by probability conservation and the existence of fixed points of the renormalization group flow. We explicitly validate the factorization theorem at one-loop order, and demonstrate its consistency at two loops in particular flavor channels. Starting at two-loops, constraints on phase space imposed by flavor measurements potentially allow for non-trivial soft contributions, but we demonstrate that they are scaleless and so explicitly vanish, ensuring that soft particles are summed inclusively and all divergences are exclusively collinear in nature. This factorization theorem opens the door to precision calculations with identified flavor in the infrared.
