Introduction to Electrical Disturbances Apparently of Extraterrestrial Origin

Mysterious static reported by K.G. Jansky, held to differ from cosmic ray. Direction is unchanging. Recorded and tested for more than a year to identify it as from Earth's galaxy. Its intensity is low. Only delicate receivable able to register - no evidence of intestellar signaling.

Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry Interface for Detection of Extraterrestrial Organics

The OASIS (Organics Analyzer for Sampling Icy surfaces) microchip enables electrospray or thermospray of analyte for subsequent analysis by the OASIS time-of-flight mass spectrometer. Electrospray of buffer solution containing the nucleobase adenine was performed using the microchip and detected by a commercial time-of-flight mass spectrometer. Future testing of thermospray and electrospray capability will be performed using a test fixture and vacuum chamber developed especially for optimization of ion spray at atmosphere and in low pressure environments.

TeleLayering: Teleoperated Construction 3D Printing Using Multimodal Feedback for Extraterrestrial and Terrestrial Construction

In this paper, we propose a teleoperated construction 3D printing technology, called TeleLayering, for planetary and terrestrial applications. The TeleLayering technology is enabled by effective multimodal control and monitoring systems and enhanced construction 3D printing robots to build or repair a variety of structures in extreme environments without the need for human presence on the jobsite. This paper presents a general description, main technical requirements, implementation challenges, and applications of this technology.

A molecular beam and computational study on the barrierless gas phase formation of (iso)quinoline in low temperature extraterrestrial environments

Despite remarkable progress toward the understanding of the formation pathways leading to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in combustion systems and in deep space, the complex reaction pathways leading to nitrogen-substituted PAHs (NPAHs) at low temperatures of molecular clouds and hydrocarbon-rich, nitrogen-containing atmospheres of planets and their moons like Titan have remained largely obscure. Here, we demonstrate through laboratory experiments and computations that the simplest prototype of NPAHs – quinoline and isoquinoline (C 9 H 7 N) – can be synthesized via rapid and de-facto barrier-less reactions involving o-, m- and p-pyridinyl radicals (C 5 H 4 N˙) with vinylacetylene (C 4 H 4 ) under low-temperature conditions.

Biogeochemical Characteristics of Earth's Volcanic Permafrost: An Analog of Extraterrestrial Environments

This article describes a study of frozen volcanic deposits collected from volcanoes Tolbachik and Bezymianny on the Kamchatka Peninsula, Russia, and Deception Island volcano, Antarctica. In addition, we studied suprasnow ash layers deposited after the 2007 eruptions of volcanoes Shiveluch and Bezymianny on Kamchatka. The main objectives were to characterize the presence and survivability of thermophilic microorganisms in perennially frozen volcanic deposits. As opposed to permafrost from the polar regions, viable thermophiles were detected in volcanic permafrost by cultivation, microscopy, and sequencing. In the permafrost of Tolbachik volcano, we observed methane formation by both psychrophilic and thermophilic methanogenic archaea, while at 37°C, methane production was noticeably lower. Thermophilic bacteria isolated from volcanic permafrost from the Deception Island were 99.93% related to Geobacillus stearothermophilus. Furthermore, our data showed biological sulfur reduction to sulfide at 85°C and even at 130°C, where hyperthermophilic archaea of the genus Thermoproteus were registered. Sequences of hyperthermophilic bacteria of the genus Caldicellulosiruptor were discovered in clone libraries from fresh volcanic ash deposited on snow. Microorganisms found in volcanic terrestrial permafrost may serve as a model for the alien inhabitants of Mars, a cryogenic planet with numerous volcanoes. Thermophiles and hyperthermophiles and their metabolic processes represent a guideline for the future exploration missions on Mars.

The Utility of Infrasound in Global Monitoring of Extraterrestrial Impacts: A Case Study of the 2008 July 23 Tajikistan Bolide

Abstract Among the various observational techniques used for the detection of large bolides on a global scale is a low-frequency sound known as infrasound. Infrasound, which is also one of the four sensing modalities used by the International Monitoring System, offers continuous global monitoring and can be leveraged for planetary defense. Infrasonic records can provide an additional dimension for event characterization and a distinct perspective that might not be available through any other observational method. This paper describes the infrasonic detection and characterization of the bolide that disintegrated over Tajikistan on 2008 July 23. This event was detected by two infrasound stations at distances of 1530 and 2130 km. Propagation paths to one of the stations were not predicted by the model, despite being clearly detected. The presence of the signal is attributed to the acoustic energy being trapped in a weak but leaky stratospheric AtmoSOFAR channel. The infrasound signal analysis indicates that the shock originated at the point of the main breakup at an altitude of 35 km. The primary mode of the shock production of the signal detected at the two stations was a spherical blast resulting from the main gross fragmentation episode. The energy estimate, based on the signal period, is 0.17–0.51 kt of TNT equivalent, suggesting a mass of 6.6–23.5 tons. The corresponding object radius, assuming the chondritic origin, was 0.78–1.18 m.

Methods for Determining Blood Flow Through Intact Vessels of Experimental Animals Under Conditions of Gravitational Stress and in Extraterrestrial Space Capsules

Work during the initial six months of this program has proceeded along three lines: (1) technical development of blood flowmeter instrumentation: (2) surgical considerations related to special problems of chronic implantation of flowmeter probes: (3) study of the relationship between levels of blood flow and organ activity. Principal engineering effort has been focused on the fundamental phenomena operative in the flowmeter probe and on probe design. Two probes have been constructed and a third is nearing completion. A previously unrecognized source of zero drift has been discovered and corrected. has been designed, assembled, tested and successfully employed in work on the several probes. A significant innovation which has been introduced is the use of a transformer coupled input for suppression of unwanted common mode signals. New low noise transistor amplifiers with characteristics suitable for space vehicle packaging are being developed. Linearity of the present apparatus has been found to extend at least into the near turbulent flow region. Attention has been directed to the two vascular beds of physiologic interest that present particular problems with regard to chronic implantation of flowmeter probes, the myocardium and the liver. Surgical techniques have been perfected that will permit myocardial and liver blood flow measurement. Two groups of animals have successfully undergone surgery and await the implantation of probes. Studies of the relationship between organ blood flow and levels of physiologic activity have been initiated. The first organ system studied was the heart, For the first time autoregulatory mechanisms have been demonstrated within the myocardial vascular bed which rapidly and precisely maintain coronary blood flow at a level i n keeping with the magnitude of cardiac work, Following a summary statement of the status of the program, the work performed is described, A financial review of expenditures incurred and a proposal for future funding are appended,
