A mechanism for the local concentration enhancement of the shuttle atmosphere

Preliminary calculations suggest that collisions between instreaming atmospheric constituents and secondary backscattered molecules can generate unexpectedly large enhancements in neutral gas concentrations in the vicinity of the shuttle. This effect is a result of a rapid decrease in the mean free path length of the scattered components following the initial expected concentration enhancement. A study will be outlined for the theoretical investigation of this mechanism. The shape dependence of associated glow halos on vehicle configuration will be discussed.

Theoretical studies of Resonance Enhance Stimulated Raman Scattering (RESRS) of frequency doubled Alexandrite laser wavelengths in cesium vapor

It is well known that the presence of a real atomic level which is nearly resonant with the pump field can greatly enhance the Raman emission cross section. In order to accurately calculate the Raman gain in systems where resonance enhancement plays a dominant role, expressions for the pump and signal susceptibilities must be derived. These expressions should be valid for arbitrary field strengths in order to allow for pump and signal saturation. In addition, the theory should allow for arbitrary longitudinal and transverse relaxation rates. This latter point is extremely vital for three level atomic systems such as the alkali earth metals since they do not have population reservoirs and can have widely varying spontaneous lifetimes on the three pertinent transitions. Moreover, the dephasing rates are strong functions of electron states and are therefore also different for the three coupled pairs of levels. These considerations are not as important when molecular systems are concerned since the large reservoir of rotational states serve to produce essentially equal longitudinal recovery rates for the population of the three levels. The three level system with three arbitrary longitudinal and transverse relaxation rates was solved. There is no need for setting either pair of rates equal and the expressions are valid for arbitrarily strong fields.

Effects of vibrational enhancement of N2 on the cooling rate of ionospheric thermal electrons

It is shown that the cooling rate of ionospheric thermal electrons by molecular nitrogen may be reduced by more than a factor of 3 as a result of the enhanced vibrational excitation of N2 from a number of chemical sources. Furthermore, under conditions of enhanced F region electron densities (greater than 10 to the 6 per cubic centimeter), N2 may act as a small net source rather than as a sink of electron thermal energy. The object of the study is to use results of the Atmospheric Explorer program and improved laboratory reaction rate measurements to evaluate the impact of N2 vibrational on the transfer of energy between N2 and thermal electrons.

Geological mapping potential of computer-enhanced images from the Shuttle Imaging Radar - Lisbon Valley Anticline, Utah

Computer-enhancement techniques applied to the SIR-A data from the Lisbon Valley area in the northern portion of the Paradox basin increased the value of the imagery in the development of geologically useful maps. The enhancement techniques include filtering to remove image speckle from the SIR-A data and combining these data with Landsat multispectral scanner data. A method well-suited for the combination of the data sets utilized a three-dimensional domain defined by intensity-hue-saturation (IHS) coordinates. Such a system allows the Landsat data to modulate image intensity, while the SIR-A data control image hue and saturation. Whereas the addition of Landsat data to the SIR-A image by means of a pixel-by-pixel ratio accentuated textural variations within the image, the addition of color to the combined images enabled isolation of areas in which gray-tone contrast was minimal. This isolation resulted in a more precise definition of stratigraphic units.

Enhanced acetylene emission near the north pole of Jupiter

The present paper is concerned with observations of acetylene fundamental and hot band vibrational emission lines from the planet Jupiter. It is pointed out that the observation of a polar bright spot in the atmosphere of Jupiter is characterized by an enhancement in the individual lines of C2H2 which can be interpreted as an enhancement in the acetylene abundance. However, a purely thermal effect, or non-LTE phenomena cannot be excluded. The intensity of the observed hot band lines is also consistent with either hypothesis. The reported observations were performed with a cooled Fabry-Perot Grating Spectrometer (FPGS). Observations and instrumentation are considered in detail along with the calculation of synthetic spectra on the basis of a line-by-line computation, and the interpretation of the obtained data.

Enhanced heat transfer combustor technology, subtasks 1 and 2, tast C.1

Analytical and experimental studies are being conducted for NASA to evaluate means of increasing the heat extraction capability and service life of a liquid rocket combustor. This effort is being conducted in conjunction with other tasks to develop technologies for an advanced, expander cycle, oxygen/hydrogen engine planned for upper stage propulsion applications. Increased heat extraction, needed to raise available turbine drive energy for higher chamber pressure, is derived from combustion chamber hot gas wall ribs that increase the heat transfer surface area. Life improvement is obtained through channel designs that enhance cooling and maintain the wall temperature at an accepatable level. Laboratory test programs were conducted to evaluate the heat transfer characteristics of hot gas rib and coolant channel geometries selected through an analytical screening process. Detailed velocity profile maps, previously unavailable for rib and channel geometries, were obtained for the candidate designs using a cold flow laser velocimeter facility. Boundary layer behavior and heat transfer characteristics were determined from the velocity maps. Rib results were substantiated by hot air calorimeter testing. The flow data were analytically scaled to hot fire conditions and the results used to select two rib and three enhanced coolant channel configurations for further evaluation.

Enhancement of time images for photointerpretation

The Thermal Infrared Multispectral Scanner (TIMS) images consist of six channels of data acquired in bands between 8 and 12 microns, thus they contain information about both temperature and emittance. Scene temperatures are controlled by reflectivity of the surface, but also by its geometry with respect to the Sun, time of day, and other factors unrelated to composition. Emittance is dependent upon composition alone. Thus the photointerpreter may wish to enhance emittance information selectively. Because thermal emittances in real scenes vary but little, image data tend to be highly correlated along channels. Special image processing is required to make this information available for the photointerpreter. Processing includes noise removal, construction of model emittance images, and construction of false-color pictures enhanced by decorrelation techniques.

A statistical study of the subauroral electron temperature enhancement using dynamics Explorer 2 Langmuir probe observations

A statistical study of the subauroral electron temperature enhancement was undertaken using Langmuir probe observations during 488 traversals of the midlatitude plasmapause region by the DE-2 satellite. The subauroral electron temperature enhancement on the nightside is a quasi-permanent feature at all altitudes between 350 and 1000 km with an occurrence frequency that depends on altitude. The occurrence frequency of the subauroral electron temperature peak has a strong altitude dependence on the dayside. The position of the subauroral Te peak decreases with increasing magnetic activity in a manner similar to that of the equatorial plasmapause and other midlatitude plasmapause signatures.

Interplanetary flux enhancements - Comparison with cometary models and observations

Interplanetary field enhancements (IFE's) are unusual nearly symmetric increases in the strength of the interplanetary magnetic field lasting tens of minutes to hours. Examples of interplanetary field enhancements are compared with MHD models and with the data obtained by the ICE spacecraft at Giacobini-Zinner. These comparisons suggest that the varying properties of IFE's are due to the fact that some events are due to passages in front of the nucleus, others in the near tail and yet others in the distant tail.

Enhancements of energetic ions associated with travelling compression regions in the deep geomagnetic tail

This paper presents a representative example of an enhancement in energetic ion flux associated with the International Sun-Earth Explorer 3 (ISEE 3) spacecraft's encounter with a traveling compression region (TCR). Data from the energetic particle anisotropy spectrometer (EPAS) instrument on ISEE 3 are studied, along with magnetic field data from the vector helium magnetometer. It is concluded that the ion enhancements seen are spatial in nature, thus supporting the idea that TCRs are the lobe signatures of plasmoids moving along the magnetotail, away from earth.

Halogenation Enhances Carbon-Fiber/Epoxy Composites

Interlaminar shear strength increased by inexpensive treatment. New surface treatment for carbon fibers enhances interlaminar shear strength, ILSS, without altering tensile strength significantly. Exposure of polyacrylonitrile-based T-300, or equivalent, fibers to bromine vapor at room temperature improves ILSS of epoxy composites made from these fibers by 30 percent. Enhanced ILSS obtained from halogenation of carbon fibers beneficial in many aerospace and terrestrial applications.

Digital enhancement of flow field images

Most photographs of experimentally generated fluid flow fields have inherently poor photographic quality, specifically low contrast. Thus, there is a need to establish a process for quickly and accurately enhancing these photographs to provide improved versions for physical interpretation, analysis, and publication. A sequence of digital image processing techniques which have been demonstrated to effectively enhance such photographs is described.

Enhanced low energy (1 MeV) ion fluxes in the outer heliosphere

The Low Energy Charged Particle (LECP) experiment on the Voyager 2 spacecraft in the outer heliosphere (greater than 10 AU) has observed several occasions when there was a peak in the interplanetary ion spectra for ions of energies of about 0.5-1.0 MeV. Such enhancements can last for several days, suggesting that at these times particles of these energies dominate the low energy cosmic population in this region of the heliosphere. Two specific cases are discussed. The enhancements seem to be associated with the passage of transient interplanetary shock events, with the ion anisotropies generally showing outflow. The most straight-forward explanation for the observations seems to involve only a propagation effect of ions from the inner to the outer solar system. This conclusion is supported by simple modeling of the propagation of an event observed at 1 AU to the spacecraft at about 12 AU.

Directed band ratioing for the retention of perceptually-independent topographic expression in chromaticity-enhanced imagery

A band ratioing method is developed which directs the retention of topographic expression and albedo information so that they remain depicted as prominent variations in image intensity. Band data are adjusted so that ratio values for each surface material coherently increase with increasing pixel bispectral radiance for all three ratios of the color composite. The retained topographic expression and albedo information do not significantly distort the ratio-enhanced band-variant reflectance information, and the resultant images are similar to chromaticity-enhanced band composite images, but require only simple arithmetic processing steps.

Gain enhancement of microstrip antennas with overlaying parasitic directors

An experimental study of gain enhancement in microstrip antennas using identical parasitic patch directors is reported. The results indicate that, with two overlying parasitic directors, the gain of a rectangular microstrip antenna is enhanced from 4.7 dB to 10.6 dB, while the 3 dB beamwidth is reduced from 103 deg to 30 deg for the E-plane and from 70 deg to 35 deg for the H-plane. The three-layer electromagnetically coupled patch antenna exhibits similar antenna characteristics to those of the Yagi array, with over 120 dB gain and with about 1 percent bandwidth.

Shuttle performance enhancement using an uprated OMS engine

The NASA Space Shuttle's Orbital Maneuvering Engine (OME) has been investigated as the basis for an enhancement of Shuttle operational flexibility. The Johnson Space Center has given attention to an upgrading of the OME through the use of a gas generator-driven turbopump to raise engine specific impulse. Hardware tests have demonstrated the projected performance gains, which will yield an enhanced, intact ascent-abort capability, as well an an improved on-orbit payload and altitude capability. Attention is given to the application of these capabilities to the Hubble Space Telescope's deployment.
