Harmonics of 60 Hz in power systems caused by geomagnetic disturbances

Simultaneous VLF/ULF observations carried out near Winnipeg, Manitoba show that geomagnetic disturbances control the behavior of harmonics of 60 Hz man-made electric power. The harmonics of 60 Hz detected by the VLF receiver are at multiples of 180 Hz, indicating that they originated from a 3 phase ac power system. Under geomagnetically quiet conditions, only odd harmonics of 70 Hz were detected. In disturbed conditions, both odd and even harmonics were excited. The strength of each harmonic changed concurrently with geomagnetic pulsation (ULF) activity. These findings seem to indicate that a portion of telluric currents shunted into the power line system through the neutrals of the Y-connected transformers give rise to a dc bias to the transformer core materials and that it distorts their hysteresis loops, activating harmonics of 60 Hz power. A mathematical proof is given that a hysteresis loop having a point of symmetry generates odd harmonics only, whereas loops lacking in point-symmetry generally give rise to both odd and even harmonics. A general formula was obtained to calculate the strength of each harmonic based on the shape of the hysteresis loop.

Assessment of the Impact of an Advanced Power System on a Turboelectric Single-Aisle Concept Aircraft

Electrified aircraft propulsion concepts show potential in using propulsion airframe inte-gration in order to increase efficiency in flight and therefore decrease fuel burn and emissions.Electrification offers component efficiency values greater than 90 percent, but the loss is in the form of low grade waste heat. A major challenge of electrified aircraft propulsion is managing that heat while minimizing any penalties associated with a thermal management system. This paper explores the effect of two innovations in the management of waste heat at the aircraft system level for a turboelectric single aisle concept. The first innovation is achieving a 3 times reduction in heat by developing high-efficiency components rather than managing the high levels of heat. The second takes advantage of the outer mold line of the aircraft to reject heat directly to the environment passively instead of adding active cooling loops that negatively impact the weight, power, and drag of the aircraft. In order to fully grasp the impact of the advanced power system, we develop methods of modeling the power and thermal management systems to be integrated in the full aircraft conceptual model. We then model the aircraft with a state of the art DC transmission system and active cooling loops as a baseline for our study. Our second model includes the advanced power system with active cooling, which results in a fuel burn reduction of 2.5 percent. Finally, in our third model we assess the benefit of an outer mold line cooling scheme with the advanced power system. The outer mold line cooling scheme with an advanced power system yields an additional 0.8 percent reduction in fuel burn, for an overall fuel burn reduction potential of 3.3 percent in addition to aerodynamic benefits of electrified aircraft propulsion.

Stability Testing and Analysis of a PMAD DC Test Bed for the Space Station Freedom

The Power Management and Distribution (PMAD) DC Test Bed at the NASA Lewis Research Center is introduced. Its usefulness to the Space Station Freedom Electrical Power (EPS) development and design are discussed in context of verifying system stability. Stability criteria developed by Middlebrook and Cuk are discussed as they apply to constant power DC to DC converters exhibiting negative input impedance at low frequencies. The utility-type Secondary Subsystem is presented and each component is described. The instrumentation used to measure input and output impedance under load is defined. Test results obtained from input and output impedance measurements of test bed components are presented. It is shown that the PMAD DC Test Bed Secondary Subsystem meets the Middlebrook stability criterion for certain loading conditions.

A Cost-Effective Wave Energy Harvesting System with Maximum Power Point Tracking Capability

In this paper, we propose a low-cost bidirectional four-switch inverter that transfers three-phase energy between a permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) driven by a wave energy collector and the power grid or a local ac load. To achieve high control performance, the machine-side inverter uses a high-gain observer for rotor position estimation and a Lyapunov-based approach for torque control. For the gridside inverter control, we estimate the filter capacitor voltage with a model reference adaptive system and control the dc-link voltage with a Lyapunov-based energy function. We also track the maximum power point from the sea waves with an integral control law that actively matches the generator impedance with that of the wave collection device. The proposed system supports both grid-following/forming modes. We validate our control design with simulation results on a 3-kW hardware setup.

A 75 kVA Intelligent Power Stages (IPS) Unit Design for Future Grid-interface Application

The demand for grid-interface converter with flexible dc bus is driven by the fast development of energy storage system (ESS), electric vehicle (EV) charging system, and versatile residential load. This paper first proposes a two-stage intelligent power stage (IPS) unit for future grid-interface applications. To achieve zero common-mode (CM) voltage emissions, step-up and step-down voltage gain, a 3-level four-switch buck-boost (3-L FSBB) dc-dc converter is adopted with fully zero voltage switching (ZVS). In one IPS unit, an advanced fiberoptic communication with sub-nanosecond synchronization is developed for different enhanced gate drivers. Moreover, an enhanced gate driver integrated current and voltage sensors is designed for monitoring and diagnostics. To achieve a whole low-profile design, three 12 oz heavy copper planar ac inductors are designed and implemented. Finally, a 75 kVA IPS unit was built to verify both the thermal and electrical design.

Solar Power Satellite Microwave Power Transmission System Description Executive Summary

The history of the concept of microwave power beaming to Earth is reviewed with emphasis on transmission frequency selection. Constraints on the system power level results from (1) required rejection of waste heat resulting from inefficiencies in the cover conversion of dc electric power to microwave power; (2) the rf power intensity in the ionosphere; and (3) the effect of sidelobe level on aperture illumination factors. Transmitter arrangement, the power distribution system, attitude control, subarrays, waveguides, and alignment are discussed.

Power connect safety and connection interlock

A power connect safety and connection interlock system is shown for use with inverters and other DC loads (16) which include capacitor filter banks (14) at their DC inputs. A safety circuit (20) operates a spring (26) biased, solenoid (22) driven mechanical connection interference (24) which prevents mating and therefore electrical connection between the power contactor halves (11, 13) of the main power contacts (12) until the capacitor bank is safely precharged through auxiliary contacts (18). When the DC load (16) is shut down, the capacitor bank (14) is automatically discharged through a discharging power resistor (66) by a MOSFET transistor (60) through a discharging power resistor (66) only when both the main power contacts and auxiliary contacts are disconnected.

A Universal Converter for DC, Single-phase AC, and Multi-phase AC Systems (Final Report)

The goal of this project was to develop a new class of universal power converters that utilize the unique properties of WBG switches, including high reverse voltage blocking and fast switching, to achieve superior performance in universal converters. Some of the features of the proposed converter are as follows: 1) Significantly longer lifetime, higher power density, lower costs associated with bill of materials, and lower shipping, installation, and repair costs compared to the existing WBG-based solutions, 2) Very flexible operation for transferring power between any type of source (dc, single-phase ac, or multi-phase ac) and any type of load (dc, single-phase ac, or multi-phase ac) without using large passive components or additional stages/components, even when the instantaneous values of input and output power are not the same, and 3) High performance operation at all power levels. Considering its advantages and wide range of applications, the proposed converter has the potential to create a new paradigm in power electronics. Among numerous applications of this converter are electric vehicles, wind energy systems, PV systems, industrial motor drives, residential variable frequency drive systems, and nanogrid applications. This project focused on the application of this converter for residential PV, residential motor drive, and industrial motor drive applications, and evaluated the performance of this converter for these applications.

A Neural Network-Based Power Mismatch Elimination Strategy for Integrated Solar and ESS AC/DC Systems (MARS)

The multiport autonomous reconfigurable solar power plant (MARS) is a promising concept for the integration of photovoltaic (PV) and energy storage system (ESS) to the transmission ac grid and a high-voltage direct current (HVdc) link. The presence of PV and ESS in each arm of the MARS results in uneven distribution of active power among different submodules (SMs), thereby leading to unbalanced SM capacitor voltages and potentially compromising the system stability. Moreover, in the case of partial shadings, shaded PV SMs will suffer from decreased power injections causing power mismatch in the MARS system. To address this issue, a neural-network-based power mismatch elimination (NNPME) strategy is proposed in this article. The proposed NNPME strategy optimizes ESS usage and leverages both dc and ac circulating currents to facilitate power transfer among the SMs, arms, and phases of the MARS system. Simulation and control hardware-in-the-loop (cHIL) experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed NNPME strategy. Compared with the traditional approaches, the proposed NNPME strategy can significantly enhance system efficiency and ensure stable and continuous operation, even in the presence of uneven power distribution within the MARS system.

ac propulsion system for an electric vehicle

It is pointed out that dc drives will be the logical choice for current production electric vehicles (EV). However, by the mid-80's, there is a good chance that the price and reliability of suitable high-power semiconductors will allow for a competitive ac system. The driving force behind the ac approach is the induction motor, which has specific advantages relative to a dc shunt or series traction motor. These advantages would be an important factor in the case of a vehicle for which low maintenance characteristics are of primary importance. A description of an EV ac propulsion system is provided, taking into account the logic controller, the inverter, the motor, and a two-speed transmission-differential-axle assembly. The main barrier to the employment of the considered propulsion system in EV is not any technical problem, but inverter transistor cost.

Self-Sustainable IoT-Based Remote Sensing Powered by Energy Harvesting Using Stacked Piezoelectric Transducer and Thermoelectric Generator

We propose a self-powered remote multi-sensing system for traffic sensing which is powered by the collective energy harvested from the mechanical vibration of the road caused by the passing vehicles and from the temperature gradient between the asphalt of the road and the soil underneath. A stacked piezoelectric transducer converts mechanical vibrations into electrical energy and a thermoelectric generator harvests the thermal energy from the thermal gradient. Electrical energy signals from the stacked piezoelectric transducer and the thermoelectric generators are converted into usable DC power to recharge the battery using AC-DC and DC-DC converters working simultaneously. The multi-sensing system comprises an embedded system with a microcontroller that acquires data from the sensors and sends the sensory data to an IoT transceiver which transmits the data as RF packets to an ethernet gateway. The gateway converts the RF packets into Internet Protocol (IP) packets and sends them to a remote server. Laboratory and road-testing results showed over 98% sensory data accuracy with the system functioning solely powered by the energy harvested from the alternative energy sources. The successful maximum transmission distance obtained between the IoT, and the gateway was approximately 1 mile, which is a considerable transmission distance achieved in an urban environment. Successful operation of the self-powered multi-sensing system under both laboratory and road conditions contributes considerably to the fields of energy harvesting and self-powered remote sensing systems. The energy flow chart and efficiency for the steps in the system were found to be mechanical power from vehicles to the energy harvester of 0.25%, stacked PZT transducer efficiency was found to be 37%, and for the TEGs the efficiency is 11%. AC-to-DC and DC-to-DC converters’ efficiencies were found to be 90% and 11%. The wireless communication RF transceiver efficiency was found to be 62.5%.

Aggregate data‐driven dynamic modeling of active distribution networks with DERs for voltage stability studies

Abstract Electric distribution networks increasingly host distributed energy resources based on power electronic converter (PEC) toward active distribution networks (ADN). Despite advances in computational capabilities, electromagnetic transient models are limited in scalability because of their reliance on exact data about the distribution system and each of its components. Similarly, the use of the DER_A model, which is intended to examine the combined dynamic behavior of many DERs, is limited by the difficulty in parameterization. There is a need for improved dynamic models of DERs for use in large power system simulations for stability analysis. This paper proposes an aggregate model‐free, data‐driven approach for deriving a dynamic partitioned model (DPM) of ADNs. Detailed residential distribution feeders were first developed, including PEC‐based DERs and composite load models (CMLDs), from which the aggregated DPM was derived. The performance was evaluated through various case studies and validated against the detailed ADN model and state‐of‐the‐art DER_A model with CMLD. The data‐driven DPM achieved a of over 90%, accurately representing the aggregated dynamic behavior of ADNs. Furthermore, the DPM significantly accelerated the simulation process with a computational speedup of 68 times compared to the detailed ADN and a 3.5 times speedup compared to the DER_A CMLD model.

Integrated solar power satellites: An approach to low-mass space power

Previous concepts for solar power satellites have used conventional-technology photovoltaic arrays, feeding a power collection and transmission system connected to microwave tubes for direct current to radio frequency DC to RF conversion, which in turn are coupled to a phased array antenna. This paper proposes using thin-film photovoltaics with an integrated solid-state phased-array to design an ultra-lightweight solar power satellite. The status of the enabling technologies, conceptual designs, possible applications, and development steps are discussed. It is found that as these technologies evolve, their use in this design results in a potential reduction in weight by a factor of ten to a hundred over conventional concepts for solar power satellites, and increases the utility by allowing service to smaller receivers at multiple receiving sites.

Demand Driven Energy Management for PIPO Auxiliary Power Supply Architecture

In this paper, a demand driven energy management (DDEM) technique is implemented on modular parallel input parallel output DC/DC auxiliary power supply (APS) structure. In this method, modules are brought in/out of the operation making them operate under high loading conditions, avoiding low efficiency under light load. Such a method finds its application in power conservative systems with variable load. Implementation of DDEM and the energy saved is shown using APS comprised of two 15W commercially off-the-shelf DC-DC modules, with 100–1000 VDC input and 24 V output voltage. Along with the DDEM, the lifetime of the power stage devices is controlled minimizing their junction temperature swing through control of cooling system. This control method uses digital twin as interface to virtualize the power devices loading operation/ health condition. Accordingly, no extra sensor or closed loop control required to measure the junction temperature of the devices or feedback the losses to the cooling flow.
