Stabilized Electrode/Electrolyte Interphase by a Saturated Ionic Liquid Electrolyte for High-Voltage NMC532/Si-Graphite Cells

Nonaqueous electrolyte has become one of the technical barriers in enabling Li-ion battery comprising of a high voltage cathode and high capacity anode. Here, we demonstrate a saturated piperidinum bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide ionic liquid (IL) with a LiFSI salt not only supports the redox reaction on the cathode at high voltages, but also shows exceptional kinetic stability on the lithiated anode as evidenced by its improved cycling performance in a NMC532/Si-graphite full cells cycled between 4.6 and 3.0 V. On the basis of the spectroscopic/microscopic analysis and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, the superior performance of the cells is attributed to the formation of solid-electrolyte-interphase on both electrode as well as unique solvation structure where a deadlocked coordination network is established at the saturated state, which prevents transition metal dissolution into the electrolyte via a solvation process.

A Coordinated-Anion-Enriched Electrolyte for Lean-Electrolyte Li–S Batteries

The solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) on Li and cathode electrolyte interphase (CEI) at sulfurized polyacrylonitrile (SPAN) formed in the commonly used liquid electrolytes cannot accommodate the large volume change of both Li anode and SPAN cathode, resulting in severe electrolyte and Li consumption and fast capacity decay under high mass loading and lean electrolyte condition. Herein, a LiF-rich SEI and a LiF-Li x N y O z co-enriched CEI are simultaneously formed by adding ionic liquid (Py 13 TFSI) in the localized high-concentration electrolyte (LHCE), which forms a coordinated-anion-enriched solvation structure. In this study, the LiF-rich interphase results in less stress/strain during large volume changes of Li and SPAN and therefore achieving obviously improved stability even at a high areal capacity. Consequently, Li (50 μm)||SPAN (6 mg cm -2 ) pouch cells under the lean electrolyte condition (E/S ratio of 5 mL g SPAN -1 ) delivers a stable cycle life of 120 cycles with 79.2% capacity retention, demonstrating great promise for high-energy-density lithium-sulfur batteries.

Materializing efficient methanol oxidation via electron delocalization in nickel hydroxide nanoribbon

Achieving a functional and durable non-platinum group metal-based methanol oxidation catalyst is critical for a cost-effective direct methanol fuel cell. While Ni(OH) 2 has been widely studied as methanol oxidation catalyst, the initial process of oxidizing Ni(OH) 2 to NiOOH requires a high potential of 1.35 V vs. RHE. Such potential would be impractical since the theoretical potential of the cathodic oxygen reduction reaction is at 1.23 V. Here we show that a four-coordinated nickel atom is able to form charge-transfer orbitals through delocalization of electrons near the Fermi energy level. As such, our previously reported periodically arranged four-six-coordinated nickel hydroxide nanoribbon structure (NR-Ni(OH) 2 ) is able to show remarkable methanol oxidation activity with an onset potential of 0.55 V vs. RHE and suggests the operability in direct methanol fuel cell configuration. Thus, this strategy offers a gateway towards the development of high performance and durable non-platinum direct methanol fuel cell.

Synthesis and structural properties of a 2D Zn( II ) dodecahydroxy- closo -dodecaborate coordination polymer

Here, in this work, we discuss the synthesis and characterization of a 2D coordination polymer composed of a dianionic perhydroxylated boron cluster, [B 12 (OH) 12 2– ], coordinated to Zn( II )—the first example of a transition metal-coordinated [B 12 (OH) 12 ] 2– compound. This material was synthesized via cation exchange from the starting cesium salt and then subjected to rigorous characterization prior to and after thermal activation. Numerous techniques, including XRD, FTIR, SEM, TGA, and solid-state NMR revealed a 2D coordination polymer composed of sheets of Zn( II ) ions intercalated between planes of boron clusters. The as-synthesized material was then evacuated of solvent via thermal treatment, and atomic-level changes from this transformation were elucidated through a combination of 1D and 2D solid-state NMR analyses of 11 B and 1 H nuclei, suggesting the full removal of coordinated solvent molecules. Evidence also suggested that [B 12 (OH) 12 2– ] can adjust its coordination to Zn( II ) in the solid-state through hemilability of its numerous –OH ligands.

Molecular engineering of ethereal electrolyte for ultrastable Si-based high voltage full cells

The successful application of Si-based high-energy Li-ion batteries (LIBs) depends on our ability to tailor electrolyte properties to achieve long-term stability and reliable performance. In this work, we demonstrate our rationale for the molecular design of ethereal solvents to address low anodic stability issues and produce a highly electrochemically stable electrolyte for Si‖LiNi 0.8 Mn 0.1 Co 0.1 O 2 (NMC811) high-energy full cells. Unlike the trimethylsilyl group, the trifluoromethyl (–CF 3 ) group exerts a very strong electron-withdrawing effect on the glycol ether backbone, reducing the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) energy level of the fluorinated glycol ether (FGE) and significantly enhancing its oxidation potential. The FGE-based electrolyte enables stable cycling of Si‖NMC811 full cells, delivering high specific capacity (900 mA h g −1 ) and coulombic efficiency (>99.78%) over extended (500) cycles. The improved electrochemical performance originates from the terminal fluorination of the diglyme backbone, which strengthens anion coordination in the solvation structure, leading to the preferential reduction of the FSI anion and the formation of robust solid electrolyte interphases (SEIs) on the Si surface. Through molecular engineering of ethereal solvents, we have discovered a promising candidate for a next-generation stable electrolyte, paving the way for the design of practical and commercially viable Si batteries.

Dinickel enzyme evolved to metabolize the pharmaceutical metformin and its implications for wastewater and human microbiomes

Metformin is the first-line treatment for type II diabetes patients and a pervasive pollutant with more than 180 million kg ingested globally and entering wastewater. The drug’s direct mode of action is currently unknown but is linked to effects on gut microbiomes and may involve specific gut microbial reactions to the drug. In wastewater treatment plants, metformin is known to be transformed by microbes to guanylurea, although genes encoding this metabolism had not been elucidated. In the present study, we revealed the function of two genes responsible for metformin decomposition (mfmA and mfmB) found in isolated bacteria from activated sludge. MfmA and MfmB form an active heterocomplex (MfmAB) and are members of the ureohydrolase protein superfamily with binuclear metal-dependent activity. MfmAB is nickel-dependent and catalyzes the hydrolysis of metformin to dimethylamine and guanylurea with a catalytic efficiency (k cat /K M ) of 9.6 × 10 3 M -1 s -1 and KM for metformin of 0.82 mM. MfmAB shows preferential activity for metformin, being able to discriminate other close substrates by several orders of magnitude. Crystal structures of MfmAB show coordination of binuclear nickel bound in the active site of the MfmA subunit but not MfmB subunits, indicating that MfmA is the active site for the MfmAB complex. Mutagenesis of residues conserved in the MfmA active site revealed those critical to metformin hydrolase activity and its small substrate binding pocket allowed for modeling of bound metformin. In conclusion, this study characterizes the products of the mfmAB genes identified in wastewater treatment plants on three continents, suggesting that metformin hydrolase is widespread globally in wastewater.

Contribution to Open Molecules Dataset (coordcomplexsampling)

The Open Molecules Dataset is a project led by external collaborators, focused on the production of a wide diversity of molecular chemistries. This project will include high-throughput electronic structure calculations on metal coordination complexes, biomolecules, and electrolytes. Solvation effects, conformers, chemical reactivity, and spin/charge sampling will be pursued for elements on the periodic table up to, but not including the actinides. We aim to contribute code related to sampling for transition metal complexes, in particular, and expand software capabilities related to other thrusts desired.

Metalorganic chemical vapor deposition of ZnGeN 2 films on GaN: effects of cation stoichiometry on surface morphology and crystallinity

Novel optoelectronic device designs based on the heterostructures of III-N and II-IV-N 2 are promising to advance device performance significantly. For example, by utilizing InGaN-ZnGeN 2 quantum well (QW) structures instead of pure InGaN, the band structure engineering in the QW active region can lead to improved electron-hole wavefunction overlap, and thus enhance the radiative efficiency for photon generation. These novel heterostructures have great potential to address the current challenge of low quantum efficiency in InGaN QW based light emitting diodes emitting in green and beyond. The materials development of ZnGeN 2 is still at an early stage as compared to the much matured GaN material system. In an ideal octet rule preserving ordered structure of ZnGeN 2 , every N atom is coordinated by exactly two Zn and two Ge atoms. However, local violation of octet rule can be caused by non-ideal coordination of N by the cations. The disordered structure is thermodynamically less favorable but can still be achieved, for example, in kinetics-limited growth regime. The ordered ZnGeN 2 has a bandgap very close to that of GaN (~3.4 eV) and a lattice mismatch of <0.1% with GaN. Interestingly, the valence band of ZnGeN 2 has been predicted to be ~1 eV above that of GaN, which has inspired novel designs for high efficiency light emitters. In this work, we investigated the metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) of ZnGeN 2 films on GaN/c-sapphire templates. Diethylzinc (DEZn), germane (GeH4) and ammonia were used as the precursors for Zn, Ge and N, respectively. A systematic study was conducted to investigate the cation stoichiometry as a function of growth temperature (TG), total reactor pressure (P) and DEZn/GeH 4 molar flow rate ratio (RII/IV). Under the investigated growth window, the Zn/(Zn+Ge) composition in the films, determined from energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, decreased monotonically with increase in TG but increased with increase in P and RII/IV. Atom probe tomography data did not indicate the presence of any secondary phases such as Zn 3 N 2 or Ge 3 N 4 . The surface morphology and crystallinity of the grown films had strong correlation with the Zn/(Zn+Ge) composition. The scanning electron microscopy images showed that the near-stoichiometric films have planar surfaces whereas Zn-rich films had crystallites on their surface and the Zn-poor films had faceted surface. Scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) imaging revealed that the Zn-rich and Zn-poor films have columnar and filament-like morphology, respectively, whereas the near-stoichiometric films have continuous film-like cross-sectional morphology. TEM nano-diffraction patterns as well as X-ray diffraction 2θ-ω scan profiles indicate that the near stoichiometric films are single crystalline. Nano-diffraction pattern of the stoichiometric films resembled that of a disordered ZnGeN 2 structure. Room temperature Raman spectra of near-stoichiometric films showed only the phonon density of states like features of a cation disordered ZnGeN 2 . Cathodoluminescence and photoluminescence spectra measured at different temperatures had similar features with peak emission wavelength at ~ 2 eV. In conclusion, the stoichiometry of ZnGeN 2 films can be widely tuned by tuning the MOCVD growth parameters. The surface morphology and the crystallinity of the films were found to have strong correlation with the Zn/(Zn+Ge) composition. The stoichiometric ZnGeN 2 films grown on GaN were demonstrated with uniform surface morphology and high crystalline quality. The results from this work will provide pathway to implement ZnGeN 2 in device structures.

Iron Carbonyl Complexes of [2.2.2]Hericene as a Rigid Tris(1,3-diene) Ligand

Hericene is an unusual hexaolefin consisting of three 1,3-diene units located on a rigid bicyclo [2.2.2]octane framework that restricts the geometrical relationships of metal atoms bonded to these olefinic units. In order to explore possible effects of this rigidity limiting metal–metal interaction in polynuclear derivatives possibly stabilizing coordinatively unsaturated species, the structures and energetics of the hericene iron carbonyl complexes (hericene)Fem(CO)n (m = 1, n = 3; m = 2, n = 6, 5; m = 3, n = 9, 8) have been investigated by density functional theory. The lowest-energy (hericene)Fem(CO)3m (m = 1, 2, 3) structures have the cavities of the hericene ligand filled with a single Fe(CO)3 moiety bonded to a 1,3-diolefin unit. Such species have been synthesized by the reaction of Fe2(CO)9 with hericene. For the (hericene)Fe2(CO)5 system, the lowest energy structures are singlet structures with an Fe(CO)3 unit bonded to a 1,3-diene unit in one hericene cavity and an Fe(CO)2 unit in another hericene cavity bonded to three C=C double bonds from two 1,3-diene units. Higher energy (hericene)Fe2(CO)5 structures include a structure in which a single hericene cavity contains a Fe2(CO)4(µ-CO) moiety with each iron atom bonded to a 1,3-diene unit. In addition, both singlet and triplet (hericene)Fe2(CO)5 structures are found in which an Fe(CO)3 moiety and an Fe(CO)2 moiety located in separate hericene cavities are each bonded to a 1,3-diene unit. The lowest-energy (hericene)Fe3(CO)8 structures have two hericene cavities containing Fe(CO)3 moieties fully bonded to 1,3-diene units and a third hericene cavity containing an Fe(CO)2 moiety fully bonded to a 1,3-diene unit.

Spin Quantization in Heavy Ion Collision

We analyzed recent experimental data on the disassembly of 28Si into 7α in terms of a hybrid α-cluster model. We calculated the probability of breaking into several α-like fragments for high l-spin values for identical and non-identical spin zero nuclei. Resonant energies were found for each l-value and compared to the data and other theoretical models. Toroidal-like structures were revealed in coordinate and momentum space when averaging over many events at high l. The transition from quantum to classical mechanics is highlighted.

CFD spinoff - Computational electromagnetics for radar cross section (RCS) studies

A finite-volume discretization procedure derived from proven CFD methods is used to solve the conservation form of the time-domain Maxwell's equations, in order to compute EM scattering from layered objects. This time-domain approach handles both single-frequency/continuous wave and broadband-frequency/pulse incident excitation. Arbitrarily shaped objects are modeled by means of a body-fitted coordinate transformation; complex internal/external structures with many material layers are treated through the implementation of a multizone framework capable of handling any type of zonal boundary condition. Results are presented for various two- and three-dimensional problems.

A Boltzmann machine for the organization of intelligent machines

A three-tier structure consisting of organization, coordination, and execution levels forms the architecture of an intelligent machine using the principle of increasing precision with decreasing intelligence from a hierarchically intelligent control. This system has been formulated as a probabilistic model, where uncertainty and imprecision can be expressed in terms of entropies. The optimal strategy for decision planning and task execution can be found by minimizing the total entropy in the system. The focus is on the design of the organization level as a Boltzmann machine. Since this level is responsible for planning the actions of the machine, the Boltzmann machine is reformulated to use entropy as the cost function to be minimized. Simulated annealing, expanding subinterval random search, and the genetic algorithm are presented as search techniques to efficiently find the desired action sequence and illustrated with numerical examples.

Mathematical modeling of a class of multibody flexible spacecraft structures

A mathematical model for a general multibody flexible spacecraft is obtained. The generic spacecraft considered consists of a flexible central body to which a number of flexible multibody structures are attached. The coordinate systems used in the derivation allow effective decoupling of the translational motion of the entire spacecraft from its rotational motion about its center of mass. The derivation assumes that the deformations in the bodies are only due to elastic motions. The dynamic model derived is a closed-form vector-matrix differential equation. The model developed can be used for analysis and simulation of many realistic spacecraft configurations.

Trivalent f-Element Squarates, Squarate-Oxalates, and Cationic Materials, and the Determination of the Nine-Coordinate Ionic Radius of Cf(III)

The synthesis, structure, and solid-state UV–vis–NIR spectroscopy of four new f-element squarates, M 2 (C 4 O 4 ) 3 (H 2 O) 4 (M = Eu, Am, Cf) and Sm(C 4 O 4 )(C 4 O 3 OH)(H 2 O) 2 ·0.5H 2 O, four new cationic lanthanide squarate chlorides, [M 4 (C 4 O 4 ) 5 (H 2 O) 12 ]Cl 2 ·5H 2 O (M = Eu, Dy, Ho Er), and two new actinide squarate oxalates, M 2 (C 4 O 4 ) 2 (C 2 O 4 )(H 2 O) 4 (M = Am, Cf), are presented. All of the metal centers are trivalent. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that M 2 (C 4 O 4 ) 3 (H 2 O) 4 and Sm(C 4 O 4 )(C 4 O 3 OH)(H 2 O) 2 ·0.5H 2 O have a two-dimensional sheet structure constructed from MO 7 (H 2 O) 2 monocapped square-antiprismatic (coordination number (CN) = 9) metal centers and SmO 6 (H 2 O) 2 square-antiprismatic (CN = 8) metal centers, respectively, whereas M 2 (C 4 O 4 ) 2 (C 2 O 4 )(H 2 O) 4 have a three-dimensional (3D) structure constructed from MO 7 (H 2 O) 2 monocapped square-antiprismatic (CN = 9) metal centers. Additionally, the cationic framework materials [M 4 (C 4 O 4 ) 5 (H 2 O) 12 ]Cl 2 ·5H 2 O have a 3D structure constructed from two crystallographically unique MO 5 (H 2 O) 3 square-antiprismatic (CN = 8) metal centers. In these structures, the squarate ligands bind to the metal centers with varying coordination modes and denticities. The results of this study provide another example of the nonparallel chemistry between the lanthanides and transplutonium elements. From the crystallographic data for the isotypic series M 2 (C 4 O 4 ) 3 (H 2 O) 4 (M = La–Nd, Sm, Eu) and the linear regression fit to a plot of the unit cell volume as a function of the cube of the ionic radius, the nine-coordinate ionic radius of Cf 3+ was determined to be 1.127 ± 0.003 Å. Lastly, computational analysis of the americium and californium complexes M 2 (C 4 O 4 ) 3 (H 2 O) 4 and M 2 (C 4 O 4 ) 2 (C 2 O 4 )(H 2 O) 4 reveals three important attributes: (i) the 5f orbitals are nonbonding in all cases, with the bonding differences occurring with the empty 6d orbitals; (ii) the Cf complexes exhibit more covalent character than their Am counterparts; and (iii) there is more covalent character in the squarate-oxalate complexes than in the squarate complexes.
