Some aerodynamic considerations related to wind tunnel model surface definition

The aerodynamic considerations related to model surface definition are examined with particular emphasis in areas of fabrication tolerances, model surface finish, and orifice induced pressure errors. The effect of model surface roughness texture on skin friction is also discussed. It is shown that at a given Reynolds number, any roughness will produce no skin friction penalty.

Radiation design considerations for advanced Jupiter spacecraft

This paper considers one aspect of the complex radiation design considerations for planetary spacecraft, namely the approach used for solving the effects of radiation on materials problems. An overview of the approach developed at JPL for Voyager, and currently being used on Galileo, is treated briefly. Examples of the postulated Jovian charged particle levels are given. The types of computer analyses codes used, the mass shielding techniques that evolved and the recommended shielding techniques for future planetary spacecraft are treated.

Brief note for consideration of active seismic exploration on Mars

Considerable controversy has arisen regarding the existence of water and water ice below the surface of Mars. Results of laboratory internal friction measurements on strongly outgassed rocks, recently made as part of an effort to interpret the high seismic Q values observed in the lunar crust, show that moisture absorbed in pores and cracks causes the low Q values. Unfortunately, the Viking seismology investigation found a surprisingly inactive planet. This note makes the case for active seismic exploration in order to ascertain the existence of liquid water in the crust from Q determinations.

Structural sizing considerations for large space platforms

Structural optimization studies are made using mathematical programming techniques to examine minimum mass structural proportions of deployable and erectable tetrahedral truss platforms subject to the integrated effects of practical design requirements. Considerations integrated into the optimization process are: 1) lowest natural frequencies of the platform and individual platform components (struts); 2) packaging constraints imposed by the Shuttle cargo bay capacity; 3) initial curvature of the struts; 4) column buckling of the struts due to gravity gradient, orbital transfer, strut length tolerance, or design loads; and 5) practical lower limits for strut diameter and wall thickness. Ultra-low mass designs are shown to be possible with strut proportions much more slender than those conventionally used for earthbound application.

Initial MPTS study results: Design considerations and issues

One of the key issues identified during investigations of microwave power transmission systems from 1965 to 1976 was the need to assure that the billions of diodes on ground-based rectennas are sufficiently reliable to support long life times of approximately 30 years. Major systems studies conducted focused on waveguides; radio frequency interference and biological considerations; the relationship between performance, weight, and cost; risk assessment; crossed field directional amplifier noise; a 48 kW klystron; effects of the environment on propagation and phase control; rectenna technology; a rationale for the ground power density region; alternate technologies for orbital assembly; ionospheric effects and phase control; and reception conversion (rf to dc collector/converter).

Design considerations for a LORAN-C timing receiver in a hostile signal to noise environment

The environment in which a LORAN-C Timing Receiver may function effectively depends to a large extent on the techniques utilized to insure that interfering signals within the pass band of the unit are neutralized. The baseline performance manually operated timing receivers is discussed and the basic design considerations and necessary parameters for an automatic unit utilizing today's technology are established. Actual performance data is presented comparing the results obtained from a present generation timing receiver against a new generation microprocessor controlled automatic acquisition receiver. The achievements possible in a wide range of signal to noise situations are demonstrated.

Solar Power Satellite /SPS/ antenna measurement considerations

An investigation carried out by the Georgia Institute of Technology that quantified the error contributors associated with both far-field and near-field antenna measurement concepts is discussed. Measurement errors are quantified into four sources: antenna range, structural/environmental, transmitter, and receiver. The study is carried out so as to control error sources to yield an overall gain uncertainty of plus or minus 0.04 dB. With regard to antenna positioners, it is found that a small angle positioner provides highly accurate scan capability over a plus or minus 1.5 deg sector for the purpose of beam integration. With regard to near-field measurement techniques, it is found that with adequate probe calibration and precision mechanical scanning, full 30 by 30 m mechanical module antenna measurements may be performed. The performance and relative cost considerations between planar near-field and conventional far-field methods indicate that the overall costs are roughly the same.

Pilot guidance and display considerations for energy efficient flight profiles

Two computer programs are applied to energy efficient flight operation in order to minimize aircraft operating costs. One algorithm (OPTIM) computes vertical flight profiles which optimize direct operating costs, including fuel and time costs, for an aircraft flying over a fixed range and with a fixed time-of-arrival. The second program (TRAGEN) simulates an aircraft steered to fly along a specified vertical flight trajectory, in order to examine fuel and cost penalties involved in flying nonoptimal trajectories. Constraints such as air traffic control procedures, and atmospheric and weight conditions are considered and supported by graphs and diagrams. The use of the algorithms as preflight planning tools is discussed, emphasizing OPTIM's future application for on-board energy management. Finally, research questions concerning pilot guidance and display considerations for advanced energy/flight management systems are addressed.

Considerations for high accuracy radiation efficiency measurements for the Solar Power Satellite (SPS) subarrays

The relatively large apertures to be used in SPS, small half-power beamwidths, and the desire to accurately quantify antenna performance dictate the requirement for specialized measurements techniques. Objectives include the following: (1) For 10-meter square subarray panels, quantify considerations for measuring power in the transmit beam and radiation efficiency to + or - 1 percent (+ or - 0.04 dB) accuracy. (2) Evaluate measurement performance potential of far-field elevated and ground reflection ranges and near-field techniques. (3) Identify the state-of-the-art of critical components and/or unique facilities required. (4) Perform relative cost, complexity and performance tradeoffs for techniques capable of achieving accuracy objectives. the precision required by the techniques discussed below are not obtained by current methods which are capable of + or - 10 percent (+ or - dB) performance. In virtually every area associated with these planned measurements, advances in state-of-the-art are required.

Solar power satellite microwave system concepts and performance considerations

The phase control system is the fundamental element in the forming, steering and control of the solar power satellite (SPS) microwave power beam. This system must in essence automatically adjust the phase at each of the transmitter's 101,552 power amplifiers to compensate for differences in transmission path lengths to the earth-based receiving antenna (rectenna). SPS phase control system requirements are discussed, taking into account system concepts, a reference system description, reference system performance, ground based phase control concepts, and ionosphere considerations. It is pointed out that the importance of determining the ionospheric effects cannot be overemphasized. The permissable power density limit through the ionosphere is a critical SPS sizing factor and the phase control system must be able to accommodate errors induced by a heated ionosphere.

The origin of Uranus - Compositional considerations

Implications of two broad classes of theories for the origin of the solar system for the composition of Uranus are examined as an approach to the testing of alternative hypotheses. Consideration is given to accretional theories of planetary formation, which predict interior structures consisting of a rock core surrounded by an envelope of H2, He, H2O, NH3 and CH4 with different ratios of H2 to ice, and to theories postulating the formation of giant gaseous protoplanets as a result of an encounter with an extended protostar, the condensation of eddies (flocules) in a cloud, with supersonic turbulence and the breakup of a ring formed in a collapsing massive solar nebula. It is shown that whereas accretional theories can easily account for the high density of Uranus relative to Jupiter and Saturn, the apparent absence of NH3, and the observed D/H ratio being about three times the solar ratio, the giant protoplanet theories do not clearly demonstrate how the compositions were achieved.

Design considerations and experiences in the use of composite material for an aeroelastic research wing

Experiences in using composite skin material on an aeroelastic research wing used in flight flutter testing are described. Significant variations in skin shear modulus due to stress and temperature were encountered with the original fiberglass laminate skin designed to minimize wing torsional stiffness. These variations along with the sensitivity of wing torsional stiffness to the skin-to-frame attachment method complicated the structural model vibration mode predictions. A wing skin redesign with different fiber orientation and a reduction in the amount of skin-to-frame bonding resulted in more predictable modal characteristics without sacrificing design objectives. Design and modeling considerations for future applications are discussed.
