p -Azaquinodimethane: A Versatile Quinoidal Moiety for Functional Materials Discovery

The past 50 years of discovery in organic electronics have been driven in large part by the donor–acceptor design principle, wherein electron-rich and electron-poor units are assembled in conjugation with each other to produce small band gap materials. While the utility of this design strategy is undoubtable, it has been largely exhausted as a frontier of new avenues to produce and tune novel functional materials to meet the needs of the ever-increasing world of organic electronics applications. Its sister strategy of joining quinoidal and aromatic groups in conjugation has, by comparison, received much less attention, to a great extent due to the categorically poor stability of quinoidal conjugated motifs. In 2017 though, the p-azaquinodimethane (AQM) motif was first unveiled, which showed a remarkable level of stability despite being a close structural analogue to p-quinodimethane, a notably reactive compound. In contrast, dialkoxy AQM small molecules and polymers are stable even under harsh conditions and could thus be incorporated into conjugated polymers. When polymerized with aromatic subunits, these AQM-based polymers show notably reduced band gaps that follow reversed structure–property trends to some of their donor–acceptor polymer counterparts and yield organic field-effect transistor (OFET) hole mobilities above 5 cm 2 V –1 s –1 . Additionally, in an ongoing study, these AQM-based compounds are also showing promise as singlet fission (SF) active materials due to their mild diradicaloid character. An expanded world of AQMs was accessed through their ditriflate derivatives, which were first used to produce ionic AQMs (iAQMs) sporting two directly attached cationic groups that significantly affect the AQM motif’s electronics, producing strongly electron-withdrawing quinoidal building blocks. Conjugated polyelectrolytes (CPEs) created with these iAQM building blocks exhibit optical band gaps stretching into the near-infrared I (NIR-I) region and showed exemplary behavior as photothermal therapy agents. In contrast to these stable AQM examples, the synthetic exploration of AQMs also produced examples of more typical diradicaloid reactivity but in forms that were controllable and produced intriguing and high-value products. With certain substitution patterns, AQMs were found to dimerize to form highly substituted [2.2]paracyclophanes in distinctly more appreciable yields than typical cyclophane formation reactions. Certain AQM ditriflates, when crystallized, undergo light-induced topochemical polymerization to form ultrahigh molecular weight (>10 6 Da) polymers that showed excellent performances as dielectric energy storage materials. These same AQM ditriflates could be used to produce the strongly electron-donating redox-active pentacyclic structure: pyrazino[2,3-b:5,6-b']diindolizine (PDIz). Importantly, the PDIz motif allowed for the synthesis of exceedingly small band gap (0.7 eV) polymers with absorbances reaching all the way into the NIR-II region that were also found to produce strong photothermal effects. Both as stable quinoidal building blocks and through their controllable diradicaloid reactivity, AQMs have already proven to be versatile and effective as functional organic electronics materials.

Enhancing the Solubility of Semiconducting Polymers in Eco-Friendly Solvents with Carbohydrate-Containing Side Chains

Semiconducting polymers are at the forefront of next-generation organic electronics due to their robust mechanical and optoelectronic properties. However, their extended π-conjugation often leads to materials with low solubilities in common organic solvents, thus requiring processing in high-boiling-point and toxic halogenated solvents to generate thin-film devices. To address this environmental concern, a natural product-inspired side-chain engineering approach was used to incorporate galactose-containing moieties into semiconducting polymers toward improved processability in greener solvents. Novel isoindigo-based polymers with different ratios of galactose-containing side chains were synthesized to improve the solubilities of the organic semiconductors in alcohol-based solvents. The addition of carbohydrate-containing side chains to π-conjugated polymers was found to considerably impact the intermolecular aggregation of the materials and their microstructures in the solid state as confirmed by atomic force microscopy and grazing-incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering. The charge transport characteristics of the new semiconductors were evaluated by the fabrication of organic field-effect transistors prepared from both toxic halogenated and greener alcohol-based solvents. Importantly, the incorporation of carbohydrate-containing side chains was shown to have very little detrimental impact on the electronic properties of the polymer when processed from green solvents.

Tuning polymer-backbone coplanarity and conformational order to achieve high-performance printed all-polymer solar cells

Abstract All-polymer solar cells (all-PSCs) offer improved morphological and mechanical stability compared with those containing small-molecule-acceptors (SMAs). They can be processed with a broader range of conditions, making them desirable for printing techniques. In this study, we report a high-performance polymer acceptor design based on bithiazole linker (PY-BTz) that are on par with SMAs. We demonstrate that bithiazole induces a more coplanar and ordered conformation compared to bithiophene due to the synergistic effect of non-covalent backbone planarization and reduced steric encumbrances. As a result, PY-BTz shows a significantly higher efficiency of 16.4% in comparison to the polymer acceptors based on commonly used thiophene-based linkers (i.e., PY-2T, 9.8%). Detailed analyses reveal that this improvement is associated with enhanced conjugation along the backbone and closer interchain π-stacking, resulting in higher charge mobilities, suppressed charge recombination, and reduced energetic disorder. Remarkably, an efficiency of 14.7% is realized for all-PSCs that are solution-sheared in ambient conditions, which is among the highest for devices prepared under conditions relevant to scalable printing techniques. This work uncovers a strategy for promoting backbone conjugation and planarization in emerging polymer acceptors that can lead to superior all-PSCs.

Understanding, quantifying, and controlling the molecular ordering of semiconducting polymers: from novices to experts and amorphous to perfect crystals

Molecular packing and texture of semiconducting polymers are often critical to the performance of devices using these materials. Although frameworks exist to quantify the ordering, interpretations are often just qualitative, resulting in imprecise use of terminology. Here, we reemphasize the significance of quantifying molecular ordering in terms of degree of crystallinity (volume fractions that are ordered) and quality of ordering and their relation to the size scale of an ordered region. We are motivated in part by our own imprecise and inconsistent use of terminology in the past, as well as the need to have a primer or tutorial reference to teach new group members. We strive to develop and use consistent terminology with regards to crystallinity, semicrystallinity, paracrystallinity, and related characteristics. To account for vastly different quality of ordering along different directions, we classify paracrystals into 2D and 3D paracrystals and use paracrystallite to describe the spatial extent of molecular ordering in 1–10 nm. We show that a deeper understanding of molecular ordering can be achieved by combining grazing-incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering and differential scanning calorimetry, even though not all aspects of these measurements are consistent, and some classification appears to be method dependent. We classify a broad range of representative polymers under common processing conditions into five categories based on the quantitative analysis of the paracrystalline disorder parameter (g) and thermal transitions. A small database is presented for 13 representative conjugated and insulating polymers ranging from amorphous to semi-paracrystalline. Lastly, we outline the challenges to rationally design more perfect polymer crystals and propose a new molecular design approach that envisions conceptual molecular grafting that is akin to strained and unstrained hetero-epitaxy in classic (compound) semiconductors thin film growth.

Synthesis of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythuophene) derivatives using three-armed conjugated cross-linker and its thermoelectric properties

Conducting polymer based thermoelectric systems are very effective at harvesting electricity from waste heat with low-temperature gradients relative to environmental temperature. However, although various studies concerning the doping effect exist, there are insufficient reports on the effect of the change in polymer chain structure on the thermoelectric properties. Here we demonstrate different poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT)-derivative chain structures (such as linear, two-dimensional, co-polymer), by varying the amount of three-armed conjugated cross-linker (1,3,5-tri(2-thienyl)-benzene (TTB)). Further, at a small amount of TTB addition (until 0.5 mM), the electrochemical charge transport of the PEDOT films increased without shift of the UV–Vis absorbing property. However, from higher than 0.5 mM TTB, electrochemical charge transport decreased with blue shift of the UV–Vis absorbing curve. Moreover, the power factor of the PEDOT-derivative films without TTB to a small amount of TTB (0.5 mM) was improved from (27.03 to 49.43) µWm -1 K -2 , and at higher than 0.5 mM TTB concentration, was diminished, respectively, because a small amount of TTB enhanced the π–π interaction of the polymer chains without disrupting the conjugation, while excess TTB molecules blocked conjugation of the polymer.

Crystal engineering of heterocyclic arylene(ethynylene) oligomers through programmed aromatic stacking

Conjugated oligomers and polymers consisting of aromatic heterocycles are examples of next-generation organic electronic materials. However, control and optimization of the self-assembly of these materials in the solid-state, which is a crucial parameter for high efficiency performance, remains an unsolved challenge in materials development. In this work, we provide valuable insight into aromatic stacking interactions between fluorinated arene rings (ArF) and heterocycles with different electronic character (Het), and elaborate on the prospect of using these interactions to control the solid-state configurations of three-ring phenyleneethynylene oligomers (PEs). Oligomers possessing heterocycles typically thought of as electron-rich (ER) show blue-shifted optical spectra in the solid-state, while those incorporating heterocycles typically thought of us electron deficient (ED) show red-shifted solid-state optical spectra. Crystal structures show ArF-Het stacking interactions between the fluorinated side-chains and ER units, which twist the backbone out of planarity and prevent chromophore aggregation. Further, the interactions are absent in ED oligomers, highlighting cofacial incompatibility between ArF rings and ED units. A combination of TD-DFT computations and novel heterocycle descriptors reinforce our assignment of the oligomers as ED or ER, while exhaustive conformer analysis shows ArF-Het stacking interactions are a significant contributor to compound stability. Overall, this work describes the importance of heterocycle electronics in conformational control in the solid state, understanding of which can be a valuable asset in the development of novel optoelectronic materials.

Exploring the Origins of Anti-Ambipolarity in BBL Polymer: Links to Redox Chemistry, Electronic Structure, and Structural Dynamics

We examine the intrinsic physical-chemical properties of the conjugated ladder-type polymer poly(benzimidazobenzophenanthroline) (BBL) in response to electron transfer. We aim at explaining the origin of the anti-ambipolar behavior behind the observed BBL nonlinear response associated with specific device architectures. To elucidate this point, we use theory and computation based on first principles, including density functional theory optimizations, ab initio molecular dynamics, time-dependent DFT, and Marcus-theory analysis. Our results reveal that this redox response is not simply monotonic but follows an alternating odd/even pattern in which gap narrowing and reopening occur sequentially before near-gapless behavior emerges at high charging. Converging theoretical evidence in this work demonstrates that bell shaped conductivity in BBL originates in its fundamental electronic structure and supramolecular organization.

Sulfur Conversion to Donor‐Acceptor Ladder Polymer Networks through Mechanochemical Nucleophilic Aromatic Substitution for Efficient CO 2 Photoreduction

The development of synthetic methods capable of converting elemental sulfur into conjugated porous sulfur‐rich polymers remains a great challenge, although direct utilization of this readily available feedstock can significantly enrich its uses and circumvent environmental problems during sulfur storage. Here, we report herein mechanochemical (MC) nucleophilic aromatic substitution (S N Ar) that enables sulfur conversion into thianthrene‐bridged porous ladder polymer networks with dense donor‐acceptor (D−A) molecular junctions. We demonstrate that the key lies in the generation of bent thianthrene units through a solid‐state ball‐milling condensation reaction between 1,2‐dihaloarenes and elemental sulfur. We also show that the assembling of D−A structural motifs into porous networks affords efficient visible‐light‐driven photocatalytic reduction of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) with water (H 2 O) vapor, in the absence of any additional photosensitizer, sacrificial agents or cocatalysts. Exceptional photoinduced charge separation along with boosted exciton dissociation results in a high‐performance of carbon monoxide (CO) production rate of 306.1 μmol g −1 h −1 with near 100 % CO selectivity, which is accompanied by H 2 O oxidation to O 2 , as confirmed by both experimental and theoretical results. We anticipate this novel MC S N Ar approach will advance processing techniques for direct sulfur utilization and facilitate new possibilities for the synthesis of D−A ladder polymer networks with promising potential in photocatalysis.

Self-Assembly of a Triblock Copolymer in the Presence of a Rigid Conjugated Polyelectrolyte

The properties of conducting polymers are strongly influenced by structural changes induced by long-range order, which can be achieved by using block copolymers that self-assemble into crystalline structures. These blends result in unique mesophases distinct from the pure components with self-assembly behavior modulated by solution conditions and polymer architectures. High-throughput small-angle X-ray scattering data of aqueous Pluronic P123 (PEO 20 –PPO 70 –PEO 20 ) and conjugated polyelectrolyte poly[3-(potassium-4-butanoate) thiophene-2,5-diyl] (PPBT) blends at various concentrations and temperatures were automatically classified into phase maps by autophasemap, an unsupervised statistical analysis algorithm. The outlined phase boundaries revealed that adding PPBT to high P123 concentrations induced a transition from cubicly ordered spherical micelles to hexagonally packed cylindrical micelles. Shear alignment via rheological small-angle neutron scattering of the blends produced monolithic oriented cubic and hexagonal crystal gels. Furthermore, these insights into the self-assembly of conductive polymer blends will aid in the design of soft materials with tunable structural and electronic properties.

Distinguishing photo-induced oxygen attack on alkyl chain versus conjugated backbone for alkylthienyl-benzodithiophene (BDTT)-based push–pull polymers

Synthetic design has enabled increasing power conversion efficiency advances in organic photovoltaics (OPV). One continuing knowledge gap is detailed understanding of single-material chemical (photo)stability. Many considerations are based on prior OPV-relevant donor homopolymer systems rather than the next-generation push–pull architectures. Generally, energetic offsets between the lowest occupied molecular orbital of the donor and molecular oxygen are assumed to dictate kinetics of photo-induced charge transfer to a super oxide radical. Herein we determine the ambient-induced photo-degradation pathways, presented as proposed site-specific arrow-pushing mechanisms, for five donor polymers all containing the same push unit – alkylthienyl-substituted-benzodithiophene (BDTT) – but with chemically distinct pull units. The donor-only polymer films were subject to controlled photobleaching in air as an accelerated degradation approach, coupled with simultaneous monitoring of absorptance. Sample subsets were periodically removed and analyzed with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, to evaluate near-surface chemical composition and oxygen additions to hetero reporter atoms on either the BDTT push unit or distinct pull unit (i.e., sulphur and nitrogen). Here, this methodology allows us to distinguish between different mechanisms of bond cleavage and formation. Overall, we find that neither polymer redox properties nor individual push or pull unit stability are sufficient to predict photo-oxidative degradation of these polymers. Rather, there is a greater dependence on the susceptibility of unique structural groups within a polymeric system. Alkyl chain oxygen addition is generally the first attack site and direct sulfur oxidation on the conjugated backbone occurs after saturation of the alkyl chain initiation sites. This work provides a standard that could be used to evaluate relative photo-oxidative (in)stability for new OPV materials quickly – prior to time-consuming device optimization – and demonstrates an effective methodology for correlating optical degradation with chemical structure alterations via spectroscopic signatures to guide synthetic design.

Stretchable and Self‐Healable Semiconductive Composites Based on Hydrogen Bonding Cross‐linked Elastomeric Matrix

Abstract Semiconductors with both high stretchability and self‐healing capability are highly desirable for various wearable devices. Much progress has been achieved in designing highly stretchable semiconductive polymers or composites. The demonstration of self‐healable semiconductive composite is still rare. Here, an extremely soft, highly stretchable, and self‐healable hydrogen bonding cross‐linked elastomer, amide functionalized‐polyisobutylene (PIB‐amide) is developed, to enable a self‐healable semiconductive composite through compounding with a high‐performance conjugated diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP‐T) polymer. The composite, consisting of 20% DPP‐T and 80% PIB‐amide, shows record high crack‐onset strain (COS ≈1500%), extremely low elastic modulus (E≈1.6 MPa), and unique ability to spontaneously self‐heal atroom temperature within 5 min. Unlike previous works, these unique composite materials also show strain‐independent charge mobility. An in‐depth morphological study based on multi‐model techniques indicate that all composites show blending ratio‐ and stretching‐independent fibril‐like aggregation due to the strong hydrogen bond in elastomer to enable the unique stable charge mobility. This study provides a new direction to develop highly healable and electronically stable semiconductive composite and will enable new applications of stretchable electronics.

Using Preformed Meisenheimer Complexes as Dopants for n-Type Organic Thermoelectrics with High Seebeck Coefficients and Power Factors

A pre-formed Meisenheimer complex of a naphthalenediimide (NDI) with tetrabutylammonium fluoride (TBAF) is obtained in a simple way by mixing dibrominated 4,9-dibromo-2,7-bis(2-octyldodecyl)benzo[lmn][3,8]phenanthroline-1,3,6,8(2H,7H)-tetraone and TBAF in solution and used as a dopant for n-type organic thermoelectrics. Additionally, two n-type polymers PNDIClTVT and PBDOPVTT are synthesized, n-doped, and characterized as conductive and thermoelectric materials. PNDIClTVT doped with NDI-TBAF presents a high σ value of 0.20 S cm –1 , a Seebeck coefficient (S) of -1854 µV K –1 , and a power factor (PF) of 67 µW m –1 K –2 , among the highest reported PF in solution-processed conjugated n-type polymer thermoelectrics. Using 4-(1,3-dimethyl-2,3-dihydro-1H-benzoimidazol-2-yl)phenyl)dimethylamine and NDI-TBAF as co-dopants, PNDIClTVT has a PF > 35 µW m –1 K –2 ; while for PBDOPVTT σ = 0.75 S cm –1 and PF = 58 µW m –1 K –2 . In this study it is found that an ionic adduct together with a neutral dopant improves the performance of n-type organic thermoelectrics leading to an enhanced power factor, and more generally, the role of such an adduct in polymer doping is also elucidated.

Porous bipolar polymers as organic cathodes for sustainable sodium/potassium-ion batteries

Redox-active porous polymers are becoming promising organic electrode materials for alkali-ion batteries because of their tunable pore size, flexible chemical structure, and high thermal stability. This work presents various porous bipolar polymers as cathodes in Na-ion batteries (NIBs) and K-ion batteries (KIBs). Two structural units containing carbonyl and amine active centers, respectively, were introduced into the repeating units of the polymers by the polycondensation of N,N,N',N'-tetrakis(4-aminophenyl)-1,4-phenylenediamine (TAP) and various dianhydrides. Here, the resulting bipolar polymers undergo multi-electron redox reactions involving both cations and anions during battery charge and discharge. The impacts of extended conjugation structures and porosity on the electrochemical performances were investigated by tuning the conjugation structures in the dianhydride monomers. The bipolar polymers with extended conjugation structures and small pore size exhibit superior electrochemical performance in NIBs and KIBs in terms of high redox potentials, long cycle life, and fast-charging capability, demonstrating great promise as organic cathode materials for alkali-ion batteries.

Porphene and porphite as porphyrin analogs of graphene and graphite

Two-dimensional materials have unusual properties and promise applications in nanoelectronics, spintronics, photonics, (electro)catalysis, separations, and elsewhere. Most are inorganic and their properties are difficult to tune. Here we report the preparation of Zn porphene, a member of the previously only hypothetical organic metalloporphene family. Similar to graphene, these also are fully conjugated two-dimensional polymers, but are composed of fused metalloporphyrin rings. Zn porphene is synthesized on water surface by two-dimensional oxidative polymerization of a Langmuir layer of Zn porphyrin with K 2 IrCl 6 , reminiscent of known one-dimensional polymerization of pyrroles. It is transferable to other substrates and bridges μm-sized pits. Contrary to previous theoretical predictions of metallic conductivity, it is a p-type semiconductor due to a predicted Peierls distortion of its unit cell from square to rectangular, analogous to the appearance of bond-length alternation in antiaromatic molecules. The observed reversible insertion of various metal ions, possibly carrying a fifth or sixth ligand, promises tunability and even patterning of circuits on an atomic canvas without removing any π centers from conjugation.
