On-demand directional microwave photon emission using waveguide quantum electrodynamics

Routing quantum information between non-local computational nodes is a foundation for extensible networks of quantum processors. Quantum information transfer between arbitrary nodes is generally mediated either by photons that propagate between them or by resonantly coupling nearby nodes. The utility is determined by the type of emitter, propagation channel and receiver. Conventional approaches involving propagating microwave photons have limited fidelity due to photon loss and are often unidirectional, whereas architectures that use direct resonant coupling are bidirectional in principle but can generally accommodate only a few local nodes. Here we demonstrate high-fidelity, on-demand, directional, microwave photon emission. We do this using an artificial molecule comprising two superconducting qubits strongly coupled to a bidirectional waveguide, effectively creating a chiral microwave waveguide. Quantum interference between the photon emission pathways from the molecule generates single photons that selectively propagate in a chosen direction. This circuit will also be capable of photon absorption, making it suitable for building interconnects within extensible quantum networks.

Interstitial proton transport through defective MXenes

Proton transport across nanometer-thick membranes in an aqueous medium is important for applications in energy and molecular sieving. Recently, Hu et al. [Nature 516(7530), 227–230 (2014)] experimentally demonstrated proton tunneling through 2D materials like graphene and hexagonal boron nitride, opening up a wide range of applications in hydrogen-based technologies such as fuel cells. Here, we demonstrate proton transport in an aqueous medium across a 2D cubic Ti 2 C membrane, a representative defective MXene, from ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. We observe bidirectional translocation of protons, which occurs through the interstitial vacancies in the surface. We show from our simulations that water dissociates on the membrane and the dissociated proton moves into the interstitial sites in the membrane. The proton hops from interstitial-to-interstitial and transports across the membrane. Here, we also show that this interstitial proton transport is associated with an induced electric field that is modulated with bidirectional transport of protons across the membrane.

Analytical Expression for DC Link Capacitor Current in a Cascaded H-Bridge Multi-Level Active Front-End Converter

Medium-voltage grid-tied systems often use a cascaded H-bridge multi-level active front-end. In this converter, dc link bus capacitors play an important role in stabilizing the converter and enabling both active and reactive power injections. The present work provides analytical expressions for the capacitor current, which are essential for optimizing system design (especially capacitor size vs. lifetime). Then, the expression is incorporated into the grid connected bidirectional power system model. Consequently, this work contributes to the guiding principles to choose accurate dc link capacitor ratings against grid-side power delivery requirements. The analytical results have been validated with detailed simulations and hardware results.

Decentralized Control of Cascaded H-Bridge Inverters for Medium-Voltage Grid Integration: Preprint

This paper introduces a fully decentralized control strategy that allows for individualized active and reactive power control of H-bridge inverters connected in series. After formulating a model of the system power flows, we outline a communications-free approach where each inverter can act on independent commands. Inverter-level feedback is accomplished locally via a measurement of current flowing through the stack. A key feature is the lack of any centralized control routines or phase-locked loop. In this framework, the reactive power control loops achieve voltage synchronization among the converters and the grid, and the active power control loops modulate the terminal voltage amplitudes that influence power delivery. Furthermore, pole placement via state feedback is used to ensure stability of voltage synchronization while also enabling tracking of bidirectional power commands. Simulations are presented to validate the proposed approach.

Traction Inverter Integrated On-Board DC Fast Charging through Partial Power Processing

This paper introduces an innovative on-board integrated DC charging approach through partial power processing (PPP) in a traction inverter system. The proposed system, incorporating a series-connected partial power dual-active-bridge (DAB) converter, efficiently regulates the DC link voltage to achieve an optimal bus voltage for traction operation across a wide speed and torque range. Leveraging partial and bidirectional power processing, the battery current during charging is precisely regulated without the need for external DC-DC charging equipment, ensuring seamless integration to a DC hub with different voltage levels. This advanced integration also endows the system with bidirectional power exchange capability to/from the external DC hub, i.e., vehicle-to-DC (V2DC).

Cross-Market Price Difference Forecast Using Deep Learning for Electricity Markets

Price forecasting is in the center of decision making in electricity markets. Many researches have been done in forecasting energy prices while little research has been reported on forecasting price difference between day-ahead and realtime markets due to its high volatility, which however plays a critical role in virtual trading. To this end, this paper takes the first attempt to employ novel deep learning architecture with Bidirectional Long-Short Term Memory (LSTM) units to forecast the price difference between day-ahead and real-time markets for the same node. The raw data is collected from PJM market, processed and fed into the proposed network. The Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE) and customized performance metric are used to evaluate the performance of the proposed method. Case studies show that it outperforms the traditional statistical models like ARIMA, and machine learning models like XGBoost and SVR methods in both RMSE and the capability of forecasting the sign of price difference. Additionally, to cross-market price difference forecast, the proposed approach has the potential to be applied to solve other forecasting problems such as price spread forecast in DA market for Financial Transmission Right (FTR) trading purpose.

Power Conversion Systems Enabled by SiC BiDFET Device

The BiDirectional Field-Effect Transistor (BiDFET) can enable circuit topologies requiring four quadrant switches, that were earlier designed using discrete combinations of MOSFETs, IGBTs, GaN HEMTs and PiN diodes. The monolithic nature of the BiDFET allows lower device count, smaller switch volume, lower inductance, and simpler packaging, and hence more reliable and commercially viable implementation in power electronics converters. Furthermore, the matrix converter topologies, now feasible using BiDFETs, can eliminate the bulky and unreliable dc link capacitors or inductors required for conventional voltage-source or current-source converters in ac-ac and ac dc applications. The 1.2 kV BiDFET has the potential to disrupt all the applications utilizing 1.2 kV switches, including electric vehicle (EV) drivetrain, bidirectional EV chargers, industrial motor drives, solid-state transformers, datacenter power supplies, elevator drives, dc microgrids, energy storage grid integration, solid-state breakers, etc.

BSDF Data generation for daylight applications: A call for international standardization

Standardized methods for generating angle-dependent, bidirectional, solar-optical properties for complex fenestration systems do not exist, which means that energy and daylight evaluations in building performance simulations often suffer from major inaccuracies. This position paper provides an overview of state-of-the-art data-driven methods for characterizing light scattering properties of fenestration materials and blind systems (e.g. fabrics, metal slats, patterned glazing), validation via laboratory, simulation and field tests, and salient issues in support of standardization of such methods via the International Standardization Organization (ISO). The ISO standard is intended to provide the fundamental underpinnings for recently mandated daylight standards that rely on bidirectional scattering distribution function data for climate-based daylight modelling and building performance simulations.

Robust Distributed State Estimator for Interconnected Transmission and Distribution Networks (Final Report RPPR-1)

This project’s objective is to develop a combined transmission and distribution state estimator which accounts for very large system size and model complexity (by way of distributing the computations) and large number of solar PV units connected to the distribution system on multiple feeders. The project not only provides a robust formulation and solution to this problem but also tests the solution by implementing it on a well-established large utility system. It introduces several improvements with respect to the state of the art in existing state estimation software: (a) The developed state estimator (SE) allows robust and accurate monitoring of bidirectional flows in distribution systems which result due to the distributed energy sources which are not observable and thus not incorporated in generation dispatch; (b) Large utility systems with tens of thousands of transmission buses and hundreds of thousands of distribution nodes are difficult to model as a single integrated system. This shortcoming is addressed by developing a “scalable distributed computational framework” which allows splitting the ultra large system models into several small subsystems and coordinating their solution by a robust and practical state estimation formulation; (c) Measurement errors irrespective of their locations are detected and removed by the developed state estimator. Historically, transmission and distribution systems were analyzed and operated as two independent systems. Given the non-transposed short feeder sections, unevenly loaded phases, strictly radial configuration and unidirectional power flows in the absence of remote generation, distribution system analysis was customized to account for these characteristics. However, some of these assumptions are no longer valid (non-radial configuration, bidirectional power flows) and thus distribution system analysis should be revisited. Furthermore, in the past, the interaction between the transmission and distribution systems was quite passive, where distribution substations were modeled as lumped loads in the transmission system model. With substantial generation injected by renewable generation located in the distribution systems, such modeling will no longer be accurate. The developed state estimator facilitates proper monitoring of the interactions between the transmission and distribution systems and enables smart dispatch of these units which are made observable by the state estimator.

Comprehensive Database of Environmental Mitigations Extracted from FERC-Licensed Hydropower Projects Using Artificial Intelligence Techniques, 1998-2023

This dataset provides a comprehensive inventory of environmental mitigation measures required by Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) licensed hydropower facilities from 461 licenses that were issued from 1998 to 2023. These licenses constitute 446 of the 1015 FERC projects that were active at the end of 2023. 17,612 mentions of environmental mitigations were identified and categorized in 128 unique categories. Mitigations were identified using a Natural Language Processing (NLP) approach, specifically with a Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformer (BERT) model. Model-derived results were then reviewed and updated by a subject matter expert as needed. This dataset introduces important enhancements to previous efforts to inventory environmental mitigations, such as including associated license text for each mitigation, tracking the number of instances a mitigation was identified within a license, and providing improved location information. These enhancements significantly expand the dataset's utility, offering greater analytical capabilities and ensuring reproducibility. The dataset is downloadable as a zip file containing the metadata and dataset files.

Dual-band Ion-scale Waves in the Solar Wind: Statistical Properties and Comparison with Single-band Ion-scale Waves

We present a comprehensive statistical analysis of ion-scale waves including dual-band ion-scale waves (DBIWs) observed by the Parker Solar Probe in the solar wind. DBIWs are characterized by the simultaneous occurrence of distinct left- and right-handed polarized wave packets at higher and lower frequencies, respectively, in the spacecraft frame, implying the presence of bidirectionally propagating L-mode waves. We identify and compare DBIWs to single-band ion-scale waves (SBIWs) and investigate their spatial distributions, background magnetic field conditions, and associated inertial range turbulence characteristics. We find that DBIWs exhibit a strong preferential occurrence at heliocentric distances between 0.2 and 0.25 au (equivalently 43 and 54 R S ) in contrast to SBIWs, the occurrence rate of which peaks closer to the Sun and decreases with the heliocentric distance. DBIWs are also preferentially observed under conditions of strong Alfvénic turbulence, characterized by low magnetic compressibility and perpendicular-dominant fluctuations. These findings support a scenario in which stochastic ion heating via sufficiently large perpendicular Alfvénic fluctuation generates the ion temperature anisotropies required to excite bidirectional ion cyclotron waves. This work advances our understanding of kinetic wave generation in the solar wind and its connection to large-scale turbulence.

Carbon fiber composites for cryogenic filament-wound vessels

Advanced unidirectional and bidirectional carbon fiber/epoxy resin composites were evaluated for physical and mechanical properties over a cryogenic to room temperature range for potential application to cryogenic vessels. The results showed that Courtaulds HTS carbon fiber was the superior fiber in terms of cryogenic strength properties in epoxy composites. Of the resin systems tested in ring composites, CTBN/ERLB 4617 exhibited the highest composite strengths at cryogenic temperatures, but very low interlaminar shear strengths at room temperature. Tests of unidirectional and bidirectional composite bars showed that the Epon 828/Empol 1040 resin was better at all test temperatures. Neither fatigue cycling nor thermal shock had a significant effect on composite strengths or moduli. Thermal expansion measurements gave negative values in the fiber direction and positive values in the transverse direction of the composites.

Thermophysical properties of lunar materials. I - Thermal radiation properties of lunar materials from the Apollo missions

The successful landings on the moon of the Apollo flights and the return of samples of lunar surface material has permitted the measurement of the thermophysical properties necessary for heat transfer calculations. The characteristics of the Apollo samples are discussed along with remote sensing results which made it possible to deduce many of the thermophysical properties of the lunar surface. Definitions considered in connection with thermal radiation measurements include the bond albedo, the geometric albedo, the normal albedo, the directional reflectance, the bidirectional reflectance, and the directional emittance. The measurement techniques make use of a directional reflectance apparatus, a bidirectional reflectance apparatus, and a spectral emittance apparatus.

Investigation of land-use spectral signatures

A technique was developed to obtain bidirectional reflectance data from natural surfaces by using a folding mirror to transfer the reflected energy from the test surface to a spectroradiometer. The folding mirror was a first surface reflector made by stretching Mylar vacuum coated with aluminum over a light weight frame. The optically folding mirror was positioned over the test surfaces with a moveable platform for both laboratory and field tests. Field tests were conducted using a tethered balloon system to position the folding mirror. A spectroradiometer was designed and built specifically for this investigation. The spectroradiometer had an angular field of view of twenty-four minutes in one axis and ten minutes in the other axis. The radiometer was capable of detecting energies in small bandwidths throughout the electromagnetic spectrum from 0.3 microns to 3.0 microns. Bidirectional reflectance data and variations in the data with source angles were obtained for Saint Augustine grass, Bermuda grass, and a black alluvium soil from the Mississippi River delta.

Radiative property investigation

Measurements of the bidirectional reflections of NASA paints Z-93 and S-13G were made for 0.5, 1.78, and 2.5 microns, source incidence angles of 0, 30, 60, and 75 deg, and four detector azimuth positions. The bidirectional reflectance distribution was found to be near Lambert for azimuth positions not to close to 180 deg from the source incident azimuth. The reflectance distribution at an azimuth of 180 deg from the source is close to Lambert for near normal source incidents angles, and becomes much larger than Lambert as the source incident angle approach grazing. The reflectance deviates from Lambert as the wavelength increases. Comparison of data for the paints shows Z-93 reflectance is much closer to Lambert than S-13G. When there is a peak in the reflectance distribution it occurred at the specular angle or an angle larger than the specular angle.
