Stable Parallel Training of Wasserstein Conditional Generative Adversarial Neural Networks : *Full/Regular Research Paper submission for the symposium CSCI-ISAI: Artificial Intelligence

We use a stable parallel approach to train Wasserstein Conditional Generative Adversarial Neural Networks (W-CGANs). The parallel training reduces the risk of mode collapse and enhances scalability by using multiple generators that are concurrently trained, each one of them focusing on a single data label. The use of the Wasserstein metric reduces the risk of cycling by stabilizing the training of each generator. We apply the approach on the CIFAR10 and the CIFAR100 datasets, two standard benchmark datasets with images of the same resolution, but different number of classes. Performance is assessed using the inception score, the Fréchet inception distance, and image quality. An improvement in inception score and Fréchet inception distance is shown in comparison to previous results obtained by performing the parallel approach on deep convolutional conditional generative adversarial neural networks (DC-CGANs). Weak scaling is attained on both datasets using up to 100 NVIDIA V100 GPUs on the OLCF supercomputer Summit.

Smart sensors using artificial intelligence for on-detector electronics and ASICs

Cutting edge detectors push sensing technology by further improving spatial and temporal resolution, increasing detector area and volume, and generally reducing backgrounds and noise. This has led to a explosion of more and more data being generated in next-generation experiments. Therefore, the need for near-sensor, at the data source, processing with more powerful algorithms is becoming increasingly important to more efficiently capture the right experimental data, reduce downstream system complexity, and enable faster and lower-power feedback loops. In this paper, we discuss the motivations and potential applications for on-detector AI. Furthermore, the unique requirements of particle physics can uniquely drive the development of novel AI hardware and design tools. We describe existing modern work for particle physics in this area. Finally, we outline a number of areas of opportunity where we can advance machine learning techniques, codesign workflows, and future microelectronics technologies which will accelerate design, performance, and implementations for next generation experiments.

Intern-Artificial Intelligence Benchmarking

Benchmarks provide a standardized method for evaluating different AI models, enabling reproducibility and comparison between models, and facilitating scientific progress. As AI models continue to develop rapidly, incorporating new datasets, capabilities, and architectures becomes more complicated. Therefore, the current static benchmarks become increasingly irrelevant. The MLCommons team argues that to make AI benchmarks more relevant, it involves making the benchmarks themselves more dynamic, as well as technical innovations that make it easier for scientists and researchers at all levels to use and contribute to the benchmarks. The current progress in technical innovation is a software that allows for a detailed view of a collection of AI benchmarks to be output in various formats that are easily readable and accessible.
