Analysis of DSN software anomalies

A categorized data base of software errors which were discovered during the various stages of development and operational use of the Deep Space Network DSN/Mark 3 System was developed. A study team identified several existing error classification schemes (taxonomies), prepared a detailed annotated bibliography of the error taxonomy literature, and produced a new classification scheme which was tuned to the DSN anomaly reporting system and encapsulated the work of others. Based upon the DSN/RCI error taxonomy, error data on approximately 1000 reported DSN/Mark 3 anomalies were analyzed, interpreted and classified. Next, error data are summarized and histograms were produced highlighting key tendencies.

Teaching graphics in technical communication classes

Graphic aids convey and clarify information more efficiently and accurately than words alone therefore, most technical writing includes the use of graphics. Ways of accumulating and presenting graphics illustrations on a shoestring budget are suggested. These include collecting graphics from companies, annual reports and laminating them for workshop use or putting them on a flip chart for classroom presentation, creating overhead transparencies to demonstrate different levels of effectiveness of graphic aids, and bringing in grahic artists for question/answer periods or in class workshops. Also included are an extensive handout as an introduction to graphics, sample assignments, and a selected and annotated bibliography.

Physiological responses to prolonged bed rest and fluid immersion in man: A compendium of research (1974 - 1980)

Water immersion and prolonged bed rest reproduce nearly all the physiological responses observed in astronauts in the weightless state. Related to actual weightlessness, given responses tend to occur sooner in immersion and later in bed rest. Much research was conducted on humans using these two techniques, especially by Russian scientists. Abstracts and annotations of reports that appeared in the literature from January 1974 through December 1980 are compiled and discussed.

The 1981 Argentina ground data collection

Over 600 fields in the corn, soybean and wheat growing regions of the Argentine pampa were categorized by crop or cover type and ancillary data including crop calendars, historical crop production statistics and certain cropping practices were also gathered. A summary of the field work undertaken is included along with a country overview, a chronology of field trip planning and field work events, and the field work inventory of selected sample segments. LANDSAT images were annotated and used as the field work base and several hundred ground and aerial photographs were taken. These items along with segment descriptions are presented. Meetings were held with officials of the State Secretariat of Agriculture (SEAG) and the National Commission on Space Investigations (CNIE), and their support to the program are described.

An algorithm for automating the registration of USDA segment ground data to LANDSAT MSS data

The algorithm is referred to as the Automatic Segment Matching Algorithm (ASMA). The ASMA uses control points or the annotation record of a P-format LANDSAT compter compatible tape as the initial registration to relate latitude and longitude to LANDSAT rows and columns. It searches a given area of LANDSAT data with a 2x2 sliding window and computes gradient values for bands 5 and 7 to match the segment boundaries. The gradient values are held in memory during the shifting (or matching) process. The reconstructed segment array, containing ones (1's) for boundaries and zeros elsewhere are computer compared to the LANDSAT array and the best match computed. Initial testing of the ASMA indicates that it has good potential for replacing the manual technique.

The development version control and visibility subsystem

A prototype development version control and programming environment visibility subsystem (DVCS) is described. DVCS provides an implementation/management interface serving both the implementor and management. The DVCS provides the implementor listings annotated with change bars, detects errors in the block structure of the design and indicates when standards requiring the use of structured programming constructs in the design of software are violated.

The graphics and data acquisition software package

A software package was developed for use with micro and minicomputers, particularly the LSI-11/DPD-11 series. The package has a number of Fortran-callable subroutines which perform a variety of frequently needed tasks for biomedical applications. All routines are well documented, flexible, easy to use and modify, and require minimal programmer knowledge of peripheral hardware. The package is also economical of memory and CPU time. A single subroutine call can perform any one of the following functions: (1) plot an array of integer values from sampled A/D data, (2) plot an array of Y values versus an array of X values; (3) draw horizontal and/or vertical grid lines of selectable type; (4) annotate grid lines with user units; (5) get coordinates of user controlled crosshairs from the terminal for interactive graphics; (6) sample any analog channel with program selectable gain; (7) wait a specified time interval, and (8) perform random access I/O of one or more blocks of a sequential disk file. Several miscellaneous functions are also provided.

Human factors in space telepresence

The problems of interfacing a human with a teleoperation system, for work in space are discussed. Much of the information presented here is the result of experience gained by the M.I.T. Space Systems Laboratory during the past two years of work on the ARAMIS (Automation, Robotics, and Machine Intelligence Systems) project. Many factors impact the design of the man-machine interface for a teleoperator. The effects of each are described in turn. An annotated bibliography gives the key references that were used. No conclusions are presented as a best design, since much depends on the particular application desired, and the relevant technology is swiftly changing.

Verification of Numerical Algorithms

The following strategy is suggested for specification and proof: (1) Defer the construction of a formal program specification with respect to I/O assertions unit the correctness of the program with respect to an abstract mathematical model of program intent is demonstrated. (2) Prove that an abstract machine (using infinite precision arithmetic) would compute that object exactly. (3) Prove that the computational sequences of arithmetic operations that occur in the abstract machine must be precisely the same at every step as those occurring on an actual machine (with finite precision arithmetic), executing the same program. (4) Use a Verification Conditions VC-generator that knows about the semantics of arithmetic operations to annotate the program with assertions that bound (or in some circumstances estimate) the difference between the actual machine state variables and the corresponding ones of the abstract machine. Construct the formal program specification by combining the verification conditions into theorems about computational error that can be proved with mechanical assistance.
