Hinge for Use in a Tension Stiffened and Tendon Actuated Manipulator

A tension stiffened and tendon actuated manipulator is provided performing robotic-like movements when acquiring a payload. The manipulator design can be adapted for use in-space, lunar or other planetary installations as it is readily configurable for acquiring and precisely manipulating a payload in both a zero-g environment and in an environment with a gravity field. The manipulator includes a plurality of link arms, a hinge connecting adjacent link arms together to allow the adjacent link arms to rotate relative to each other and a cable actuation and tensioning system provided between adjacent link arms. The cable actuation and tensioning system includes a spreader arm and a plurality of driven and non-driven elements attached to the link arms and the spreader arm. At least one cable is routed around the driven and non-driven elements for actuating the hinge.

Electroactive Polymers (EAP) low Mass Muscle Actuators

Actuation devices are used for many space applications with an increasing need to reduce their size, mass, and power consumption as well as cut their cost. Existing transducing actuators, such as piezoceramics, induce limited displacement levels. Potentially, electroactive polymers (EAP) have the potential for low-mass, low-power, inexpensive miniature muscle actuators that are superior to the widely used actuators.

Mathematical Model Development and Experimental Verification of Electromagnetic Force Actuators for use in Space Applications

This technical memorandum shows the development of the mathematics needed to model several types of electromagnetic force actuators that may be of interest for use in space applications. The actuators described are capable of providing attractive, repulsive, and longitudinal forces between the actuator and a variety of metal surfaces. Potential applications for these propellant free actuators include spacecraft docking, in-space fabrication, robotic spacecraft inspection and servicing, deflection of metallic debris, and interaction with iron core asteroids (e.g., landing, repelling, and relocating).

A Methodology for Actuating RCS Jets in a Continuous, Time-Accurate CFD Simulation

Computational fluid dynamics simulations of Mars entry vehicle reaction control systems have been used to gain a better understanding of the wide range of flow phenomena encountered during various phases of flight. One aspect of this is simulating the system during controlled flight. Current practices model the system in a continuously actuated state, but this methodology is unable to accurately model the dynamic behavior of the system during EDL. One method to improve this is to create a coupled CFD-RBD-Control simulation. The first step to this is establishing a method of accurately actuating an RCS jet during a time accurate CFD simulation. This paper presents a method to achieve this actuation. There are three phases to the methodology: establishing the off state, creating a ramping function that will initialize the jet flow, and establishing the on state. A test case of a jet in a supersonic crossflow is implemented to establish the success of the methodology in being able to actuate a jet in the midst of an ongoing CFD simulation. It shows significant improvement in boundary condition responsiveness for linear and exponential ramping functions in comparison to the step function. A preliminary demonstration of the methodology is presented for the MSL vehicle which shows significant advantages for the implementation of a linear ramping function over a step function.

Computation of Static Shapes and Voltages for Micromachined Deformable Mirrors with Nonlinear Electostatic Actuators

In modeling micromachined deformable mirrors with electrostatic actuators whose gap spacings are of the same order of magnitude as that of the surface deformations, it is neccessary to use nonlinear models for the actuators. In this paper, we consider micromachined deformable mirrors modeled by a membrane or plate equation with nonlinear electrostatic actuator characteristics.

Influence of Actuator Movement Rate During Acquisition of Inlet Characterization Data

This report considers using a process to acquire performance data for supersonic mixed-compression inlets that is faster and less costly than the previous process. In the previous process for acquiring data during wind tunnel experiments, actuators for backpressuring an inlet moved in discrete increments, paused for dynamics to dampen, measured data for 5 s, recorded the data, and then reduced the data to graphic plots of pressure recovery versus mass capture ratio. This discrete data acquisition procedure was methodical, reliable, and accurate. However, acquiring data to characterize the inlet consumed significant wind-on time. Wind tunnel operation was costly when considering maintenance, energy, and human resources (operators and research team); therefore, the price for each data point was high. This report presents a quicker method to obtain all measurements, one which can also be used in blowdown wind tunnels. This approach, identified as the dynamic inlet characteristic data acquisition procedure, uses in situ dynamic high-speed pressure sensors to measure pressure signals. The backpressuring actuator moves continuously, and measurements from high-speed pressure sensors are recorded as the actuator progresses to and past the incremental points. Despite its advantages, the approach raised the following questions: (1) Will the new process be as accurate as the previous process? and (2) Are there any hidden costs? These concerns are addressed in this report. This report reviews a study that was undertaken to compare wind tunnel experiment data taken using the previous discrete data acquisition procedure with data recorded using the dynamic inlet characterization data acquisition procedure. In this report, the wind tunnel experiment and the study objectives are described. The processes to reduce the data for analysis are explained, and a discussion of the results is given. Finally, conclusions from this study that may guide further work in this area are presented.

Development of a space qualified high reliability rotary actuator for spaceflight use. Volume 2: Appendices to technical report

A space-qualified, high reliability, 150 ft-lb rated torque rotary actuator is described. This drive is an integrated variable reluctance orbit motor-epicyclic transmission actuator. The performance goals were based on future control moment gyrotorquer applications and represent an advancement in the torque-to-weight ratio, backlash, inertia and response characteristics of electric rotary drives. The program accomplishments have been in two areas (1) the development of two high ratio (818:1) actuator configurations (breadboard and flightweight) and (2) the invention of a reliable proximity switch sensor system for self-commutation without use of optical or electrical brush techniques.

Apollo experience report: Guidance and control systems: CSM service propulsion system gimbal actuators

The service propulsion system gimbal actuators of the Apollo command and service module were developed, modified, and qualified between February 1962 and April 1968. The development of these actuators is described as the result of extensive testing, retesting, and modification of the initial design. Successful completion of each mission without anomalies attributable to the actuators indicated that the particular configuration (modification) in use was adequate for the flight profile imposed.
