Method and apparatus for virtualizing the micro-op cache

Systems, apparatuses, and methods for virtualizing a micro-operation cache are disclosed. A processor includes at least a micro-operation cache, a conventional cache subsystem, a decode unit, and control logic. The decode unit decodes instructions into micro-operations which are then stored in the micro-operation cache. The micro-operation cache has limited capacity for storing micro-operations. When new micro-operations are decoded from pending instructions, existing micro-operations are evicted from the micro-operation cache to make room for the new micro-operations. Rather than being discarded, micro-operations evicted from the micro-operation cache are stored in the conventional cache subsystem. This prevents the original instruction from having to be decoded again on subsequent executions. When the control logic determines that micro-operations for one or more fetched instructions are stored in either the micro-operation cache or the conventional cache subsystem, the control logic causes the decode unit to transition to a reduced-power state.

Optimal Decision Making in High-Throughput Virtual Screening Pipelines

ABSTRACT Effective selection of the potential candidates that meet certain conditions in a tremendously large search space has been one of the major concerns in many real-world applications. In addition to the nearly infinitely large search space, rigorous evaluation of a sample based on the reliable experimental or computational platform is often prohibitively expensive, making the screening problem more challenging. In such a case, constructing a high-throughput screening (HTS) pipeline that pre-sifts the samples expected to be potential candidates through the efficient earlier stages, results in a significant amount of savings in resources. However, to the best of our knowledge, despite many successful applications, no one has studied optimal pipeline design or optimal pipeline operations. In this study, we propose two optimization frameworks, applying to most (if not all) screening campaigns involving experimental or/and computational evaluations, for optimally determining the screening thresholds of an HTS pipeline. We validate the proposed frameworks on both analytic and practical scenarios. In particular, we consider the optimal computational campaign for the long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) classification as a practical example. To accomplish this, we built the high-throughput virtual screening (HTVS) pipeline for classifying the lncRNA. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed frameworks significantly reduce the effective selection cost per potential candidate and make the HTS pipelines less sensitive to their structural variations. In addition to the validation, we provide insights on constructing a better HTS pipeline based on the simulation results.

IEEE P2988: Recommended Practice of Use and Functions of Virtual Synchronous Machines

Power systems are going through a paradigm shift from centralized generation to distributed generation. This brings unprecedented challenges to power systems stability, reliability, and security. Operating power electronic converters as Virtual Synchronous Machines (VSMs) can bring backward compatibility to power systems, unify and harmonize the integration and interaction of future power systems players, and improve power system stability, reliability, and security. This is vital for the large-scale adoption of distributed energy resources, the advancement of sustainability, and the development of a low-carbon economy. This IEEE 2988 Recommended Practice will define the fundamental principles, mandatory functions, and optional functions of a VSM, i.e., a power electronic converter that is operated to behave like conventional synchronous machines. It will not describe or specify power semiconductor devices, hardware topologies, or micro-controllers that are used to build a VSM. This talk will discuss the activities and development plan for IEEE 2988 with the aim to engaging broad stakeholders and widening participation.

Incident exercise in a virtual environment

An incident simulation system supports an incident exercise in a virtual environment. The incident simulation system accesses a simulation plan defining an incident within a theater of operation. The incident simulation system simulates the incident exercise by displaying, to a participant in the incident exercise, images representing what the participant would see within the theater of operation as the participant moves within the theater of operation. The incident simulation system further simulates the incident by generating incident data indicating effects of the incident at target locations and at target times as the participant moves within the theater of operation. The incident simulation system further simulates the incident by displaying to the participant images representing the user experience that a detector would provide based on the generated incident data.

Measurement of the Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering Cross Section from the Proton at 10.6 GeV using the CLAS12 Detector

Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering (DVCS) is an exclusive process that produces a real photon when a lepton scatters from a quark inside a nucleon or a nucleus. Measurement of the DVCS cross section enables the study of the Generalized Parton Distributions (GPD), which plays a central role in understanding the QCD dynamics inside a hadron. Thus, the quark and gluon origin of the nucleon spin and mass can be probed and three-dimensional images of the target nucleon or nucleus can be realized. This thesis presents a cross section analysis of DVCS from the proton in the presence of its background, Bethe-Heitler (BH) process. The CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer for operation at 12 GeV beam energy (CLAS12) collaboration has taken electron-proton scattering data in fall 2018 using a liquid hydrogen target and the 10.6 GeV polarized electron beam from the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF). The CLAS12 detector is a nearly hermetic fixed-target detector, located in Hall B, Jefferson Lab at Newport News, Virginia. The experimentally determined BH-DVCS cross section is in good agreement with a phenomenological-model based theoretical prediction. The kinematic dependence of the cross section is reported over a wide range. The short-term plan to utilize the results presented here for a thorough tomography study and the long-term plan for GPD studies at future facilities such as the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) are discussed.

Systems and methods for data analytics for virtual energy audits and value capture assessment of buildings

A system may provide virtual energy audits of one or more target buildings. The system may retrieve weather data and energy usage data specific to a given target building from a weather server and a utility server, respectively. The system may store predefined building characteristics corresponding to the given target building in local memory. Based on the weather data, energy usage data, and/or predefined building characteristics, the system may generate one or more building markers that characterize the energy usage and efficiency of the given target building. Building efficiency diagnostics and energy conservation prognostics may be generated based on the building markers and may be sent by the system to be displayed via a user interface of a client device. The energy conservation prognostics may include one or more energy conservation measure recommendations and corresponding predicted cost/energy savings.

Virtual Engineering of Low-Temperature Conversion

In this work, we present the development of an overarching software framework and supporting multiphysics models to simulate the end-to-end process of biomass conversion. This virtual engineering (VE) software is designed with the goal of accelerating research and development and reducing risk for market-relevant biomass conversion processes. We currently support multiple models, computing paradigms, and fidelities representing the steps of feedstock pretreatment, enzymatic hydrolysis, and bioconversion. Although this VE approach was developed to support a biomass workflow, we have designed each component in a way that allows us to easily support new domains, unit models, and feedstocks. We begin by presenting the user-facing aspects of the VE software and highlight how simulated elements are defined and linked by VE functions. We then present an overview of the high-fidelity computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models developed to support our target domain before segueing into our efforts to develop accurate and fast surrogate models, capturing the salient outcomes from the CFD simulations in a significantly less computationally demanding manner. We then present how VE calculations interface with a commercial techno-economic analysis software, Aspen Plus. We conclude by presenting VE case studies that leverage these methods and discuss how our methods can be extended to support a wide variety of accelerated biofuel commercialization pathways in the future.

Offline Arterial Signal Timing Optimization based on Virtual Phase Link Model - A Real-world Case Study

Conventional signal timing for arterial usually takes bottom-up approaches. Engineers optimize each individual intersection first and then coordinate them by adjusting the offsets. This work is based on the Virtual Phase-Link (VPL) model, a street traffic model designed for online traffic model predictive control, to obtain a top-down offline arterial signal timing. We Studied the Shallowford Rd. in Chattanooga, TN and found that the inconsistency in intersection capacities along the arterial could lead to some intersections becoming bottlenecks. Signal timing is a significant factor that affect the intersection capacities. We realized that the VPL-based model can guarantee the consistency in intersections along an arterial. We therefore adopted the VPL-based model and developed an offline signal timing optimization approach. The proposed timing derived from the VPL-based offline signal timing optimization showed very good results in simulation. The Chattanooga Department of Transportation adopted the optimized timing obtained from the proposed approach and gave positive feedbacks to the research team. We also collected field experiment data, which demonstrated overall energy reductions and speed improvements on some sections of the Shallowford Rd. arterial. We will continue the experiment when the COVID-19 pandemic impact subsides to have a more robust quantitative evaluation.
