Large-area low-noise flexible organic photodiodes for detecting faint visible light

Silicon photodiodes are the foundation of light-detection technology; yet their rigid structure and limited area scaling at low cost hamper their use in several emerging applications. A detailed methodology for the characterization of organic photodiodes based on polymeric bulk heterojunctions reveals the influence that charge-collecting electrodes have on the electronic noise at low frequency. The performance of optimized organic photodiodes is found to rival that of low-noise silicon photodiodes in all metrics within the visible spectral range, except response time, which is still video-rate compatible. Solution-processed organic photodiodes offer several design opportunities exemplified in a biometric monitoring application that uses ring-shaped, large-area, flexible, organic photodiodes with silicon-level performance.

Spatial and temporal control of lysis by the lambda holin

The infection cycle of phage λ terminates in lysis mediated by three types of lysis proteins, each disrupting a layer in the bacterial envelope: the S105 holin, the R endolysin, and the Rz/Rz1 spanin complex targeting the inner membrane, cell wall or peptidoglycan, and the outer membrane, respectively. Video microscopy has shown that in most infections, lysis occurs as a sudden, explosive event at a cell pole, such that the initial product is a less refractile ghost that retains rod-shaped morphology. Here, we investigate the molecular basis of polar lysis using time-lapse fluorescence microscopy. The results indicate that the holin determines the morphology of lysis by suddenly forming two-dimensional rafts at the poles about 100 s prior to lysis. Given the physiological and biochemical similarities between the lambda holin and other class I holins, dynamic redistribution and sudden concentration may be common features of holins, probably reflecting the fitness advantage of all-or-nothing lysis regulation

An Incremental Tensor Train Decomposition Algorithm

We present a new algorithm for incrementally updating the tensor train decomposition of a stream of tensor data. This new algorithm, called the tensor train incremental core expansion (TT-ICE) improves upon the current state-of-the-art algorithms for compressing in tensor train format by developing a new adaptive approach that incurs significantly slower rank growth and guarantees compression accuracy. This capability is achieved by limiting the number of new vectors appended to the TT-cores of an existing accumulation tensor after each data increment. These vectors represent directions orthogonal to the span of existing cores and are limited to those needed to represent a newly arrived tensor to a target accuracy. We provide two versions of the algorithm: TT-ICE and TT-ICE accelerated with heuristics (TT-ICE*). Here, we provide a proof of correctness for TT-ICE and empirically demonstrate the performance of the algorithms in compressing large-scale video and scientific simulation datasets. Compared to existing approaches that also use rank adaptation, TT-ICE* achieves 57× higher compression and up to 95% reduction in computational time.

Citizen science for IceCube: Name that Neutrino

Name that Neutrino is a citizen science project where volunteers aid in classification of events for the IceCube Neutrino Observatory, an immense particle detector at the geographic South Pole. From March 2023 to September 2023, volunteers did classifications of videos produced from simulated data of both neutrino signal and background interactions. Name that Neutrino obtained more than 128,000 classifications by over 1800 registered volunteers that were compared to results obtained by a deep neural network machine-learning algorithm. Possible improvements for both Name that Neutrino and the deep neural network are discussed.

PLANC: Parallel Low-rank Approximation with Nonnegativity Constraints

In this work, we consider the problem of low-rank approximation of massive dense nonnegative tensor data, for example, to discover latent patterns in video and imaging applications. As the size of data sets grows, single workstations are hitting bottlenecks in both computation time and available memory. We propose a distributed-memory parallel computing solution to handle massive data sets, loading the input data across the memories of multiple nodes, and performing efficient and scalable parallel algorithms to compute the low-rank approximation. We present a software package called Parallel Low-rank Approximation with Nonnegativity Constraints, which implements our solution and allows for extension in terms of data (dense or sparse, matrices or tensors of any order), algorithm (e.g., from multiplicative updating techniques to alternating direction method of multipliers), and architecture (we exploit GPUs to accelerate the computation in this work). We describe our parallel distributions and algorithms, which are careful to avoid unnecessary communication and computation, show how to extend the software to include new algorithms and/or constraints, and report efficiency and scalability results for both synthetic and real-world data sets.

Scribe Network API v.1.0.0

SAND2023-07864O Scribe Network API is an add-on tool for Scribe3D software. Scribe Network API documents tabletop exercises in trainings and plays back simulated videos of the scenarios and responses. Users can apply the software to compiled projects, or to a simple visual studio project solution package. The software runs a web application that relays information between computers using Scribe3D through a web application, or web app. The web app involves a representational state transfer (REST) application programming interface that handles sending and receiving Scribe save files and an SQL server that stores the save files. This follow-on package allows users to facilitate a networked tabletop exercise. ScholarGuard

The ScholarGuard framework aims to address the gap in archiving and preservation efforts for scholarly artifacts beyond traditional research papers, such as software source code, datasets, presentation slides, workflows, protocols, videos, and more. It introduces a prototype system designed to automatically track researchers' outputs across various scholarly productivity portals on the open web, including platforms like GitHub, Slideshare, Figshare, and Wikipedia. The system detects the availability of new scholarly artifacts and applies modern web archiving technology to create a durable archival record, including high-level metadata for each artifact. This metadata is displayed within the system, linking both to the live version and the archived version of the resource, ensuring long-term accessibility and preservation of diverse research outputs. The software serves as a critical tool for preserving the broader spectrum of scholarly contributions, facilitating visibility, searchability, and long-term access to research artifacts beyond the traditional scope of journal publications.

Fireworks on Weather Radar and Camera

High-sensitivity weather radars easily detect nonmeteorological phenomena characterized by weak radar returns. Fireworks are the example presented here. To understand radar observations, an experiment was conducted in which the National Severe Storms Laboratory (NSSL)’s research (3-cm wavelength) dual-polarization radar and a video camera were located at 1 km from fireworks in Norman, Oklahoma. The fireworks from the 4 July 2017 celebration were recorded by both instruments. The experiment is described. Few bursts recorded by the camera are analyzed to obtain the height of the explosion, its maximum diameter, number of stars, and the duration of the visible image. Radar volume scans are examined to characterize the height of the observation, the maximum reflectivity, and its distribution with height. The fireworks location is close to the Terminal Doppler Weather Radar (TDWR) that operates in single polarization at a 5-cm wavelength and monitors hazardous weather over the Oklahoma City airport. A third radar with data from the event is the Weather Surveillance Radar-1988 Doppler (WSR-88D) located in Norman. It has a wavelength of 10 cm and supports technical developments at the Radar Operation Center. Reflectivity factors measured by the three radars are compared to infer the size of dominant scatterers. The polarimetric characteristics of fireworks returns are analyzed. Although these differ from those of precipitation, they are indistinguishable from insect returns. Radar observation of larger fireworks in Fort Worth, Texas, with a WSR-88D is included and compared with the observations of the smaller fireworks in Norman. We expect the detectability of explosions would be similar as of fireworks. Pinpointing locations would be useful to first responders, or air quality forecasters. We note a benefit of fireworks recognition in weather radar data is that it can prevent contamination of precipitation accumulations.
