A nuclear electric propulsion concept using a thermionic reactor inductively coupled to a magnetoplasma-dynamic (MPD) accelerator is described and the results of preliminary analyses are presented. In this system, the thermionic generating unit operates continuously at a power level of approximately 0.4 MW, while the MPD thruster operates intermittently at higher voltages and power levels. Energy storage is provided by building up a large current in an inductor. Periodically, the charging current is interrupted and the energy stored in the magnetic field of the inductor is utilized for a short duration thrust pulse. A typical thrust pulse is characterized by a power level of 1 to 4 MWe, a duration of 1 msec, and a duty cycle of approximately 20%. Results of the preliminary analysis show that approximately 85 to 90% of the power available from the thermionic converter array can be delivered to the MPD thruster for a nominal 400 kWe system with an inductive unit suitable for a flight vehicle. Optimized values of the total specific mass of the system including the thermionic reactor, the inductor, and the MPD thruster are estimated in the range of 23 to 24 kg/kWe.
The partitioning of chromium between olivines, spinels and silicate liquids was studied as a function of temperature, oxygen fugacity, and cooling rate between 1175 and 1300 C and redox states near the Fe-FeO buffer. It is found that the weight ratio of Cr2O3 in olivine to that in the liquid increases slightly as oxygen fugacity decreases, but the effect is very small. The cooling experiments showed that the Cr2O3 content does not re-equilibrate with cooling.

Bulk compositions, petrology, and mineralogy of lithic fragments discovered in polished sections of Apollo 17 drill core samples 70007, 70008, and 70009 and Luna 24 soil 24077, 43 are described. The fragments have unambiguous affinities to mare basalts, but are exceptionally low in TiO2 (less than 1.0 wt.% TiO2). Apollo 17 rake sample 78526 is a green glassy rock of similar composition. Together the samples represent a distinct variety of mare basalts. Bulk compositional relationships suggest that they are related to Apollo 15 green glass, but the data do not permit one to discern the precise nature of the relationship. Both fractional crystallization and partial melting models can explain the observed compositional trends.

Synthetic analogs of Luna 24 ferrobasalt and an Apollo 15 green glass were subjected to iron capsule experiments to test hypotheses concerning the generation of Luna 24 ferrobasalt. Results of the experiments indicated that the Luna 24 ferrobasalt may be generated by near-surface fractionation of a Luna 24 green glass parent. Evidence for the parent magma which differentiated at or near the Mare Crisium site to yield the Luna 24 ferrobasalt may be found in the Luna 24 green glass and lithic fragments of vitrophyres.

The paper presents calculations of electron impact collision strengths and spontaneous radiative decay rates for titanium ions of the LiI through FI isoelectronic sequences for transitions between levels of the 2S(2)2p(k), 2s2p(k+1), and 2p(k+2) configurations. From these atomic data, excitation-rate coefficients are calculated along with level populations for these three configurations. The calculations of level populations include the effects of proton excitation, and are carried out at electron temperatures and densities typical of tokamak plasmas. Wavelengths of forbidden and intersystem lines are given, and a synthetic spectrum is presented for a typical temperature and density.
Luneburg lenses of good quality were formed on high index optical waveguides by evaporation of arsenic trisulfide glass through simple masks. Using only two thin circular aperture masks, lenses with focal spots of a few times the diffraction limited width at f/4 were obtained. These lenses were designed for and tested at both visible (633 nm) and infrared wavelengths. Procedures for the design, fabrication, and testing of lenses of this type are described.
