Methods of eliminating or reducing underbread cracking in multipass GTA welds in thick T-111 plate were studied. Single V butt welds prepared using experimental filler metal compositions and standard weld procedures resulted in only moderate success in reducing underbread cracking. Subsequent procedural changes incorporating manual welding, slower weld speeds, and three or fewer fill passes resulted in crack-free single V welds only when the filler metal was free of hafnium. The double V joint design with successive fill passes on opposite sides of the joint produced excellent welds. The quality of each weld was determined metallographically since the cracking, when present, was very slight and undetectable using standard NDT techniques. Tensile and bend tests were performed on selected weldments. The inherent filler metal strength and the joint geometry determined the strength of the weldment. Hardness and electron beam microprobe traverses were made on selected specimens with the result that significant filler metal-base metal dilution as well as hafnium segregation was detected. A tentative explanation of T-111 plate underbread cracking is presented based on the intrinsic effects of hafnium in the weldment.

Electrical measurements on shallow Si n+-p junction diodes with a 30-nm TiSi2 contacting layer demonstrate that an 80-nm-thick amorphous Ta36Si14N50 film prepared by reactive RF sputtering of a Ta5Si3 target in an Ar/N2 plasma very effectively prevents the interaction between the Si substrate with the TiSi2 contacting layer and a 500-nm Cu overlayer. The Ta36Si14N50 diffusion barrier maintains the integrity of the I-V characteristics up to 900 C for 30-min annealing in vacuum. It is concluded that the amorphous Ta36Si14N50 alloy is not only a material with a very low reactivity for copper, titanium, and silicon, but must have a small diffusivity for copper as well.

This is a continuation of the report “Effects of Hand Soldering MIL-PRF-55365 Tantalum Capacitors,” which discusses the parametric effects of convection reflow soldering, JPL standard hand soldering, and optimized hand soldering on solid tantalum capacitors. The current focus is determining the long-term reliability effects of the various soldering techniques. Unfortunately, the 100-piece sample size chosen for the highly accelerated life tests was too small to reliably determine the effects of the different soldering techniques on the lifespan of the parts. In hindsight, this likely could have been predicted based on the large alphas and small betas of the Weibull failure distributions discovered during the scouting trials. Now that the effects of inadequate sample size are better understood, an opportunity exists to not only discover whether there are real differences in the reliability associated with the various soldering techniques, but also the potential to discover the voltage acceleration model and the temperature acceleration effect for these capacitors. It is recommended that the testing be repeated with a more appropriate sample size to capture this useful information.

Ultrahigh temperature shape memory alloys (UHT-SMAs) have transition temperatures above 600 C, and they have found applications for sensing and actuating devices in aerospace industry. Among very few such UHT-SMAs currently known are Ru-based alloys such as RuNb and RuTa, whose martensite structures and phase transitions are totally different from those of NiTi-based SMAs and were poorly understood. In this work, we carried out a systematical study of RuNb using first-principles total energy calculations and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The transition paths and mechanisms in cubic → tetragonal →monoclinic transitions are revealed. and the transition sequence and martensitic transition temperatures are determined (MTTs) by evaluating the Gibbs free energies using thermodynamic integration. The calculated MTTs are in very good agreement with the experimental data. We found that the monoclinic phase at the second transition has the 𝑃21/m symmetry instead of experimentally identified 𝑃2/m. Our calculations demonstrate that RuTa has very similar phase transitions to those of RuTa. Furthermore, we studied the Ru0.5Nb0.25Ta0.25 ternary. Our results can explain the measured significant drop of MTT (~ 200 C) in the second transition for Ru0.5Nb0.25Ta0.25 compared with those of RuNb and RuTa, while in the first transition its MTT is between MTTs of RuNb and RuTa. The insights gained by this study and the verified ab initio methods for accurate MTT calculations can be applied to fast screen and quantitatively design novel UHT-SMAs having similar properties with desirable MTTs and much reduced cost.
