Fiber optic wavelength division multiplexing: Principles and applications in telecommunications and spectroscopy

Design and fabrication tradeoffs of wavelength division multiplexers are discussed and performance parameters are given. The same multiplexer construction based on prism gratings has been used in spectroscopic applications, in the wavelength region from 450 to 1600 nm. For shorter wavelengths down to 200 nm, a similar instrument based on longer fibers (500 to 1000 micrometer) has been constructed and tested with both a fiber array and a photodiode detector array at the output.

Conceptual design of a synchronous Mars telecommunications satellite

Future missions to Mars will require a communications system to link activities on the Martian surface with each other and with mission controllers on Earth. A conceptual design is presented for an aerosynchronous communications satellite to provide these links. The satellite provides the capability for voice, data/command, and video transmissions. The mission scenario assumed for the design is described, and a description of a single aerosynchronous satellite is explained. A viable spacecraft design is then presented. Communication band selection and channel allocation are discussed. The communications system conceptual design is presented along with the trades used in sizing each of the required antennas. Also, the analyses used to develop the supporting subsystem designs are described as is the communications impact on each subsystem design.

Electronic collaboration: Some effects of telecommunication media and machine intelligence on team performance

Both NASA and DoD have had a long standing interest in teamwork, distributed decision making, and automation. While research on these topics has been pursued independently, it is becoming increasingly clear that the integration of social, cognitive, and human factors engineering principles will be necessary to meet the challenges of highly sophisticated scientific and military programs of the future. Images of human/intelligent-machine electronic collaboration were drawn from NASA and Air Force reports as well as from other sources. Here, areas of common concern are highlighted. A description of the author's research program testing a 'psychological distancing' model of electronic media effects and human/expert system collaboration is given.

Voyager mission telecommunication firsts

The communications breakthroughs achieved during the NASA Voyager mission are discussed. The dual-spacecraft mission to Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and their moons and rings was launched in 1977 and completed interplanetary phase some 12 years later with the Voyager 2 Neptune encounter in August 1989. The radio telemetry, coding, and navigation equipment of the spacecraft are examined in detail. Firsts achieved in the radio science area are also discussed. These include the fact that it was the first mission specifically designed to obtain radio-science data. It had very exacting requirements for radio system stability, both at S- and X-bands, and for frequency and timing system stability, both flight and ground.

On-board processing for telecommunications satellites

In this decade, communications satellite systems will probably face dramatic challenges from alternative transmission means. To balance and overcome such competition, and to prepare for new requirements, INTELSAT has developed several on-board processing techniques, including Satellite-Switched TDMA (SS-TDMA), Satellite-Switched FDMA (SS-FDMA), several Modulators/Demodulators (Modem), a Multicarrier Multiplexer and Demodulator MCDD), an International Business Service (IBS)/Intermediate Data Rate (IDR) BaseBand Processor (BBP), etc. Some proof-of-concept hardware and software were developed, and tested recently in the INTELSAT Technical Laboratories. These techniques and some test results are discussed.

Telemetering and telecommunications research

The research center activities during the reporting period have been focused in three areas: (1) developing the necessary equipment and test procedures to support the testing of 8PSK-TCM through TDRSS from the WSGT; (2) extending the theoretical decoder work to higher speeds with a design goal of 600MBPS at 2 bits/Hz; and (3) completing the initial phase of the CPFSK Multi-H research and determining what subsets (if any) of these coding schemes are useful in the TDRSS environment. The equipment for the WSGT TCM testing has been completed and is functioning in the lab at NMSU. Measured results to date indicate that the uncoded system with the modified HRD and NMSU symbol sync operates at 1 to 1.5 dB from theory when processing encoded 8PSK. The NMSU pragmatic decoder when combined with these units produces approximately 2.9 dB of coding gain at 10(exp -5) BER. Our study of CPFSK with Multi-H coding has reached a critical stage. The principal conclusions reached in this activity are: (1) no scheme using Multi-H alone investigated by us or found in the literature produces power/bandwidth trades that are as good as TCM with filtered 8PSK; (2) when Multi-H is combined with convolutional coding, one can obtain better coding gain than with Multi-H alone but still no better power/bandwidth performance than TCM and these gains are available only with complex receivers; (3) the only advantage we can find for the CPFSK schemes over filtered MPSK with TCM is that they are constant envelope (however, constant envelope is of no benefit in a multiple access channel and of questionable benefit in a single access channel since driving the TWT to saturation in this situation is generally acceptable); and (4) based upon these results the center's research program will focus on concluding the existing CPFSK studies.

A 32-GHz phased array transmit feed for spacecraft telecommunications

A 21-element phased array transmit feed was demonstrated as part of an effort to develop and evaluate state-of-the-art transmitter and receiver components at 32 and 34 GHz for future deep-space missions. Antenna pattern measurements demonstrating electronic beam steering of the two-dimensional array are reported and compared with predictions based on measured performance of MMIC-based phase shifter and amplifier modules and Vivaldi slotline radiating elements.

The International Telecommunications Satellite (INTELSAT) Solar Array Coupon (ISAC) atomic oxgyen flight experiment: Techniques, results and summary

Techniques and results of the ISAC flight experiment are presented, and comparisons between flight tests results and ground based testing are made. The ISAC flight experiment, one component of a larger INTELSAT 6 rescue program, tested solar array configurations and individual silver connects in ground based facilities and during STS-41 (Space Shuttle Discovery). In addition to the INTELSAT specimens, several materials, for which little or no flight data exist, were also tested for atomic oxygen reactivity. Dry lubricants, elastomers, polymeric materials, and inorganic materials were exposed to an oxygen atom fluence of 1.2 x 10(exp 20) atoms. Many of the samples were selected to support Space Station Freedom design and decision-making.
