The Energy-Energy Correlation in the back-to-back limit at N 3 LO and N 3 LL'

We present the analytic formula for the Energy-Energy Correlation (EEC) in electron-positron annihilation computed in perturbative QCD to next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N 3 LO) in the back-to-back limit. In particular, we consider the EEC arising from the annihilation of an electron-positron pair into a virtual photon as well as a Higgs boson and their subsequent inclusive decay into hadrons. Our computation is based on a factorization theorem of the EEC formulated within Soft-Collinear Effective Theory (SCET) for the back-to-back limit. We obtain the last missing ingredient for our computation — the jet function — from a recent calculation of the transverse-momentum dependent fragmentation function (TMDFF) at N 3 LO. We combine the newly obtained N 3 LO jet function with the well known hard and soft function to predict the EEC in the back-to-back limit. The leading transcendental contribution of our analytic formula agrees with previously obtained results in N = 4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. We obtain the N = 2 Mellin moment of the bulk region of the EEC using momentum sum rules. Finally, we obtain the first resummation of the EEC in the back-to-back limit at N 3 LL' accuracy, resulting in a factor of ~ 4 reduction of uncertainties in the peak region compared to N 3 LL predictions.

MOF-Transformed In 2 O 3-x @C Nanocorn Electrocatalyst for Efficient CO 2 Reduction to HCOOH

For electrochemical CO 2 reduction to HCOOH, an ongoing challenge is to design energy efficient electrocatalysts that can deliver a high HCOOH current density (J HCOOH ) at a low overpotential. Indium oxide is good HCOOH production catalyst but with low conductivity. In this work, we report a unique corn design of In 2 O 3-x @C nanocatalyst, wherein In 2 O 3-x nanocube as the fine grains dispersed uniformly on the carbon nanorod cob, resulting in the enhanced conductivity. Excellent performance is achieved with 84% Faradaic efficiency (FE) and 11 mA cm –2 J HCOOH at a low potential of – 0.4 V versus RHE. At the current density of 100 mA cm –2 , the applied potential remained stable for more than 120 h with the FE above 90%. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the abundant oxygen vacancy in In 2 O 3-x has exposed more In 3+ sites with activated electroactivity, which facilitates the formation of HCOO* intermediate. Operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy also confirms In 3+ as the active site and the key intermediate of HCOO* during the process of CO 2 reduction to HCOOH.

Epitaxial columnar growth of strain-free antiferromagnetic Weyl semimetal Mn 3 Sn on wurtzite c -plane GaN/Al 2 O 3 (0001)

Weyl semimetal thin films with excellent crystalline quality are of great interest for antiferromagnetic spintronics. Mn 3 Sn is one Weyl semimetal with great properties and promise for exciting science and applications. It has proven very challenging, however, to grow Mn 3 Sn thin films with smooth surfaces, negligible strain, and excellent crystallinity. In this work, we discuss the successful preparation of epitaxial Mn 3 Sn (0001)-oriented thin films via molecular beam epitaxial growth on c -plane wurtzite GaN which was grown by MBE on Al 2 O 3 (0001). We present the reflection high energy electron diffraction analysis along with x-ray diffraction in order to demonstrate the crystalline quality of the film, and we give atomic models to explain the epitaxial orientation relationships between the crystal lattices of the substrate, GaN layer, and Mn 3 Sn layer. Importantly, we discuss the film lattice parameters as compared to expected values, demonstrating negligible strain both in-plane and out-of-plane . Atomic force microscopy reveals an epitaxial columnar growth mode characterized by flat-top-mesa islands, while scanning tunneling microscopy shows the atomically smooth surfaces of the mesa-top structures. Finally, Rutherford backscattering informs the stoichiometry of the film as well as the layer thicknesses.

Post-irradiation examination of low burnup U 3 Si 5 and UN-U 3 Si 5 composite fuels

Here this work presents post-irradiation examination data on UN-U 3 Si 5 and U 3 Si 5 fuels at low burnup (i.e., <10–15 GWd/tHM) with Kanthal AF® cladding. The results suggest good irradiation performance for both the silicide and nitride-silicide composite pellets. Optical microscopy revealed that the pellet-cladding gap is still open, and limited axial cracking was observed only in UN-U 3 Si 5 pellets. Microcracking was isolated to the U 3 Si 5 phase in all cases and was observed in pre-irradiation and depleted pellets, indicating that it was not irradiation induced. The fission gas release was minimal for the calculated fission density achieved (2.6 – 3.15 × 10 20 fiss/cm 3 ). No fission gas bubbles were observed in the optical metallography. These results suggest acceptable swelling and fission gas behavior for both the single phase and composite compositions.

Inclusive studies of two- and three-nucleon short-range correlations in 3 H and 3 He

Inclusive electron scattering at carefully chosen kinematics can isolate scattering from the high-momentum nucleons in short-range correlations (SRCs). SRCs are produced by the hard, short-distance interactions of nucleons in the nucleus, and because the two-nucleon (2N) SRCs arise from the same N-N interaction in all nuclei, the cross section in the SRC-dominated regime is identical up to an overall scaling factor. This scaling behavior has been used to identify SRC dominance and to measure the contribution of SRCs in a wide range of nuclei. We examine this scaling behavior over a range of momentum transfers using new data on 2 H, 3 H, and 3 He, and find an expanded scaling region compared to heavy nuclei. Motivated by this improved scaling, we examine the 3 H and 3 He data in kinematics where three-nucleon SRCs may play an important role. The data for the largest struck nucleon momenta are consistent with isolation of scattering from three-nucleon SRCs, and suggest that the very highest momentum nucleons in 3 He have a nearly isospin-independent momentum configuration.

Li + Diffusion in Amorphous and Crystalline Al 2 O 3 for Battery Electrode Coatings

Al 2 O 3 is often applied protectively to lithium-ion battery anode and cathode materials to inhibit surface degradation, suppress dendrite formation, and relieve mechanical stresses. Given the very high intrinsic band gap and diffusion barrier of the material, the mechanism that allows Li diffusion through these coatings is not well understood, and widely varying laboratory results indicate that there may be dependencies on morphology and stoichiometry. Using nudged elastic band calculations and ab initio molecular dynamics, we perform a systematic investigation across Al 2 O 3 structures, both crystalline and amorphous, and at various concentrations of Li + to uncover the optimal parameters for maximally diffusive coatings. We find a correlation between the low proximity of Li + to Al 3+ and the low Li + migration barrier. Although barriers are the lowest in the highly diffusive one-dimensional channels of crystalline θ-Al 2 O 3 , the system is structurally delicate and subject to detrimental distortion as the Li + content is increased. The α-Al 2 O 3 lattice is, conversely, highly stable against distortion at all Li + concentrations but disadvantageous for Li + migration. In amorphous systems, unscreened Li + –Li + Coulomb repulsion and pre-emptive occupation of “trapping sites” combine to lower the energy barriers as a function of increasing concentration. One of our most important findings is that Al-deficient materials can sharply increase Li + movement, and we predict that an amorphous material with a combination of high Li + concentration and Al deficiency would enable highly Li + -conductive protective coatings for electrodes.

CeTaN 3 and CeNbN 3 : Prospective Nitride Perovskites with Optimal Photovoltaic Band Gaps

Perovskites constitute an exceptionally tunable materials family with diverse applications in electronics, optoelectronics, energy, and quantum technologies. Out of the thousands of known perovskites, the majority of compounds are oxides, halides, and chalcogenides. In contrast, only two nitride perovskites are currently known. In this work we perform a thorough ab initio computational screening of possible nitride perovskites, and we identify two new compounds, CeNbN 3 and CeTaN 3 , with band gaps in the near-infrared to visible range, depending on temperature. In their room-temperature orthorhombic phase, we predict that both compounds exhibit direct or quasidirect band gaps in the range 1.1–2.0 eV, with the Pnma phases matching the Shockley–Queisser limit for photovoltaic energy conversion efficiency. Further, these compounds are also predicted to be strong light absorbers, with absorption coefficients surpassing those of high-performance semiconductors such as GaAs and CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3 . The present findings reveal a potentially new class of nitride semiconductors with promise for electronics, optoelectronics, and light harvesting and for integration with existing nitride-based lighting technology.

Competitive TcO4-, IO3-, and CrO42- Incorporation into Ettringite

Ettringite is a naturally occurring mineral found in cementitious matrices that is known for its ability to incorporate environmentally mobile oxyanion contaminants. To better assess this immobilization mechanism for contaminants within cementitious waste forms intended for nuclear waste storage, this work explores how mixed oxyanion contaminants compete for ettringite incorporation and influence the evolving mineralogy. Ettringite was precipitated in the presence of TcO4-, IO3-, and/or CrO42-, known contaminants of concern to nuclear waste treatment, over pre-determined precipitation periods. Solution analyses quantified contaminant removal and the collected solid was characterized using bulk and microprobe XRD coupled with PDF and microprobe XRF analyses. Results suggest that =96% IO3- is removed from solution, regardless of ettringite precipitation time or the presence of TcO4- or CrO42-. However, TcO4- removal remained <20%, was not significantly improved with longer ettringite precipitation times, and significantly decreased in the presence of IO3-. When IO3- is comingled with CrO42, gypsum is formed as a secondary mineral phase, which results in oxyanion partitioning among mineral phases, e.g., IO3- incorporation into ettringite and CrO42- incorporation into gypsum via SO42- substitution. Results from this work exemplify the importance of competitive immobilization when assessing waste form performance and environmental risk of contaminant release.

Vibrational signatures of HNO 3 acidity when complexed with microhydrated alkali metal ions, M + ∙(HNO 3 )(H 2 O) n =5 (M = Li, K, Na, Rb, Cs), at 20 K

The speciation of strong acids like HNO 3 under conditions of restricted hydration is an important factor in the rates of chemical reactions at the air-water interface. Here we explore the trade-offs in play when HNO 3 is attached to alkali ions (Li + -Cs + ) with four water molecules in their primary hydration shells. This is achieved by analyzing the vibrational spectra of the M + ∙(HNO 3 )(H 2 O) 5 clusters cooled to about 20 K in a cryogenic photofragmentation mass spectrometer. The local acidity of the acidic OH group is estimated by the extent of the red shift in its stretching frequency when attached to a single water molecule. Here, the persistence of this local structural motif (HNO 3 -H 2 O) in all of these alkali metal clusters enables us to determine the competition between the effect of the direct complexation of the acid with the cation, which acts to enhance acidity, and the role of the water network in the first hydration shell around the ions, which acts to counter (screen) the intrinsic effect of the ion. Analysis of the vibrational features associated with the acid molecule as well as those of the water network reveal how cooperative interactions in the micro hydration regime conspire to effectively offset the intrinsic enhancement of HNO 3 acidity afforded by attachment to the smaller cations.

Probing High-Temperature Amine Chemistry: Is the Reaction NH 3 + NH 2 ⇌ N 2 H 3 + H 2 Important?

The reaction NH 3 + NH 2 ⇌ N 2 H 3 + H 2 (R1) has been identified as a key step to explain experimental results for pyrolysis and oxidation of ammonia. However, no direct experimental or theoretical evidence for the reaction has been reported. In the present work, the reaction was studied by ab initio theory and by reinterpretation of experimental data. We could not locate a transition state for R1 occurring as a direct process, but alternative mechanisms yielded an upper bound to k 1 of 1.5 × 10 13 exp(–58.9 kcal mol –1 /RT) cm 3 mol –1 s –1 over 1000–2500 K, several orders of magnitude lower than values applied in modeling. Consistent with the theoretical work, re-evaluation of NH 3 pyrolysis data supported a very low value of k 1 . However, this finding opens up a novel unresolved issue. Current kinetic models cannot capture the NH 3 oxidation behavior in a number of laminar flow reactor and jet-stirred reactor experiments without adopting an improbably high value for k 1 . Furthermore, important oxidation steps might be underestimated or missing from mechanisms.

High-Entropy 2D Carbide MXenes: TiVNbMoC 3 and TiVCrMoC 3

Two-dimensional (2D) transition metal carbides and nitrides, known as MXenes, are a fast-growing family of 2D materials. MXenes 2D flakes have n + 1 (n = 1-4) atomic layers of transition metals interleaved by carbon/nitrogen layers, but to-date remain limited in composition to one or two transition metals. In this study, by implementing four transition metals, we report the synthesis of multi-principal-element high-entropy M 4 C 3 T x MXenes. Specifically, we introduce two high-entropy MXenes, TiVNbMoC 3 T x and TiVCrMoC 3 T x , as well as their precursor TiVNbMoAlC 3 and TiVCrMoAlC 3 high-entropy MAX phases. We used a combination of real and reciprocal space characterization (X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and scanning transmission electron microscopy) to establish the structure, phase purity, and equimolar distribution of the four transition metals in high-entropy MAX and MXene phases. We use first-principles calculations to compute the formation energies and explore synthesizability of these high-entropy MAX phases. We also show that when three transition metals are used instead of four, under similar synthesis conditions to those of the four-transition-metal MAX phase, two different MAX phases can be formed (i.e., no pure single-phase forms). This finding indicates the importance of configurational entropy in stabilizing the desired single-phase high-entropy MAX over multiphases of MAX, which is essential for the synthesis of phase-pure high-entropy MXenes. The synthesis of high-entropy MXenes significantly expands the compositional variety of the MXene family to further tune their properties, including electronic, magnetic, electrochemical, catalytic, high temperature stability, and mechanical behavior.

Chloride Reduction of Mn 3+ in Mild Hydrothermal Synthesis of a Charge Ordered Defect Pyrochlore, CsMn 2+ Mn 3+ F 6 , a Canted Antiferromagnet with a Hard Ferromagnetic Component

Geometrically frustrated systems play an important role in studying new physical phenomena and unconventional thermodynamics. Charge ordered defect pyrochlores AM 2+ M 3+ F 6 offer a convenient platform for probing the interplay between electron distribution over M 2+ and M 3+ sites and structural distortions; however, they are limited to compounds with M 2+/3+ = V, Fe, Ni, and Cu due to difficulties in the simultaneous stabilization of other 3d elements in the +2 and +3 oxidation states. Herein, we employ Cl– anions under hydrothermal conditions for the mild reduction of Mn 2 O 3 in concentrated HF to obtain the CsMn 2+ Mn 3+ F 6 composition as a phase pure sample and study its properties. The magnetism of CsMn 2 F 6 was characterized by measuring the magnetic susceptibility and isothermal magnetization data, and a magnetic transition to a canted antiferromagnet state was found at 24.1 K. We determined the magnetic structure of CsMn 2 F 6 using powder neutron diffraction, which revealed successive long-range ordering of the Mn 2+ and Mn 3+ sites that is accompanied by a second transition. As a result, the role and strength of magnetic exchange interactions were characterized using DFT calculations.

Cubic AgMnSbTe 3 Semiconductor with a High Thermoelectric Performance

The reaction of MnTe with AgSbTe 2 in an equimolar ratio (ATMS) provides a new semiconductor, AgMnSbTe 3 . AgMnSbTe 3 crystallizes in an average rock-salt NaCl structure with Ag, Mn, and Sb cations statistically occupying the Na sites. AgMnSbTe 3 is a p-type semiconductor with a narrow band gap of ~0.33 eV. A pair distribution function analysis indicates that local distortions are associated with the location of the Ag atoms in the lattice. Density functional theory calculations suggest a specific electronic band structure with multi-peak valence band maxima prone to energy convergence. In addition, Ag 2 Te nanograins precipitate at grain boundaries of AgMnSbTe 3 . Here, the energy offset of the valance band edge between AgMnSbTe 3 and Ag 2 Te is ~0.05 eV, which implies that Ag 2 Te precipitates exhibit a negligible effect on the hole transmission. As a result, ATMS exhibits a high power factor of ~12.2 μWcm -1 K -2 at 823 K, ultralow lattice thermal conductivity of ~0.34 Wm -1 K -1 (823 K), high peak ZT of ~1.46 at 823 K, and high average ZT of ~0.87 in the temperature range of 400–823 K.

Ni/Photoredox-Catalyzed C(sp 3 )–C(sp 3 ) Coupling between Aziridines and Acetals as Alcohol-Derived Alkyl Radical Precursors

Aziridines are readily available C(sp 3 ) precursors that afford valuable β-functionalized amines upon ring opening. In this article, we report a Ni/photoredox methodology for C(sp 3 )–C(sp 3 ) cross-coupling between aziridines and methyl/1°/2° aliphatic alcohols activated as benzaldehyde dialkyl acetals. Orthogonal activation modes of each alkyl coupling partner facilitate cross-selectivity in the C(sp 3 )–C(sp 3 ) bond-forming reaction: the benzaldehyde dialkyl acetal is activated via hydrogen atom abstraction and β-scission via a bromine radical (generated in situ from single-electron oxidation of bromide), whereas the aziridine is activated at the Ni center via reduction. Here, we demonstrate that an Ni(II) azametallacycle, conventionally proposed in aziridine cross-coupling, is not an intermediate in the productive cross-coupling. Rather, stoichiometric organometallic and linear free energy relationship studies indicate that aziridine activation proceeds via Ni(I) oxidative addition, a previously unexplored elementary step.

Elucidating the chemical dynamics of the elementary reactions of the 1-propynyl radical (CH 3 CC; X 2 A 1 ) with 2-methylpropene ((CH 3 ) 2 CCH 2 ; X 1 A 1 )

Exploiting the crossed molecular beam technique, we studied the reaction of the 1-propynyl radical (CH 3 CC; X 2 A 1 ) with 2-methylpropene (isobutylene; (CH 3 ) 2 CCH 2 ; X 1 A 1 ) at a collision energy of 38 ± 3 kJ mol –1 . The experimental results along with ab initio and statistical calculations revealed that the reaction has no entrance barrier and proceeds via indirect scattering dynamics involving C 7 H 11 intermediates with lifetimes longer than their rotation period(s). The reaction is initiated by the addition of the 1-propynyl radical with its radical center to the π-electron density at the C1 and/or C2 position in 2-methylpropene. Further, the C 7 H 11 intermediate formed from the C1 addition either emits atomic hydrogen or undergoes isomerization via [1,2-H] shift from the CH 3 or CH 2 group prior to atomic hydrogen loss preferentially leading to 1,2,4-trimethylvinylacetylene (2-methylhex-2-en-4-yne) as the dominant product. The molecular structures of the collisional complexes promote hydrogen atom loss channels. RRKM results show that hydrogen elimination channels dominate in this reaction, with a branching ratio exceeding 70%. Since the reaction of the 1-propynyl radical with 2-methylpropene has no entrance barrier, is exoergic, and all transition states involved are located below the energy of the separated reactants, bimolecular collisions are feasible to form trimethylsubstituted 1,3-enyne (p1) via a single collision event even at temperatures as low as 10 K prevailing in cold molecular clouds such as G+0.693. As a result, the formation of trimethylsubstituted vinylacetylene could serve as the starting point of fundamental molecular mass growth processes leading to di- and trimethylsubstituted naphthalenes via the HAVA mechanism.

Plasma-assisted deposition and characterization of Al 2 O 3 dielectric layers on (001) β -Ga 2 O 3

In this work, we have investigated plasma-assisted deposition of Al 2 O 3 on HVPE (001) β-Ga 2 O 3 and evaluated the dielectric quality from electrical measurements on fabricated metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) capacitors. The interface structure and crystallinity of the films were investigated as a function of the growth temperature. The dielectric/semiconductor interfaces were found to have reverse breakdown electric fields up to 5.3 MV/cm in the β-Ga 2 O 3 , with relatively low hysteresis in capacitance–voltage and low leakage current. We determined a negative fixed interface charge density at the interface from analysis of thickness-dependent capacitance voltage data. In conclusion, this study shows the advantage of using plasma-assisted deposition to achieve high breakdown strength Al 2 O 3 /β-Ga 2 O 3 MOS structures for device application purposes.

The enhanced ferroelectricity in Sr 1-δ TiO 3 /BaTiO 3 superlattices with Sr deficiency

Here we report the tunable ferroelectricity in superlattices of (Sr 1-δ TiO 3 )n/(BaTiO 3 ) 8 with δ ≈ 5% and the maximally enhanced ferroelectricity is found in the n = 6 superlattice. The room-temperature remnant polarization of n = 6 is enhanced by 70% and 1120% compared to those of BaTiO 3 and Sr 1-δ TiO 3 thin films, respectively. The ferroelectric transition temperature of n = 6 is 40 K higher than that of the BaTiO 3 film, and is independent of the measurement frequency. The dependence of remnant field 2Pr on n coincides well with the n dependence of γ/α, which is ratio between out-of-plane and in-plane octahedral rotation angles. It thus suggests a strong correlation between the octahedral rotation pattern and the ferroelectric distortion. Furthermore, our study demonstrates the importance of constructing superlattices to enhance the ferroelectric properties of the defect-engineered materials to be better than the pristine materials.

Frequency shifts in the electron paramagnetic resonance spectrum of 39 K due to spin-exchange collisions with polarized 3 He and precise 3 He polarimetry

The Zeeman splittings and electron paramagnetic resonance frequencies of alkali-metal atoms are shifted in the presence of a polarized noble gas. For a spherical geometry, the shift is enhanced over what is expected classically by a dimensionless atomic parameter 𝜅 0 that is unique to each alkali-metal-atom–noble-gas pair. Here, we present a precise measurement of 𝜅 0 for the 39 K − 3 He system with a relative accuracy of better than 1%. A critical component of achieving subpercent accuracy involved characterizing the shape of our samples using both MRI and CT medical-imaging techniques. The parameter 𝜅 0 plays an important role in establishing the absolute polarization of 3 He in a variety of contexts, including polarized targets for electron-scattering experiments and MRI of the gas space of the lungs. Our measurement more than doubles the accuracy possible when using 𝜅 0 for polarimetry purposes. Just as important, the work presented here represents a direct measurement of 𝜅 0 for the 39 K − 3 He system; previous values for 𝜅 0 in the 39 K − 3 He system relied on a chain of measurements that were benchmarked by previous measurements of 𝜅 0 in the Rb- 3 He system.
