Top 13 Blendstocks Derived from Biomass for Mixing-Controlled Compression-Ignition (Diesel) Engines: Bioblendstocks with Potential for Decreased Emissions and Improved Operability

Reducing the impacts of medium- and heavy-duty (MD/HD) ground transportation can be enabled by fuel-engine combinations that use lower compression ignition liquid fuels and reduce criteria pollutant emissions. Fuels and blendstocks combined with advanced engine technologies could reduce the cost of ownership and the emission of pollutants, including soot, nitrogen oxides (NOx) and greenhouse gases (GHGs), from MD/HD vehicles. This report describes the evaluation and screening of MD/HD mixing-controlled compression ignition (MCCI) biofuel candidates for further development and commercialization. The report is aimed at 1) biofuel researchers looking to better understand options to reduce criteria pollutant and GHG emissions while maintaining efficiency and meeting requirements for engine operability and 2) engine researchers who want to evaluate biofuels that meet diesel fuel properties for their impact on conventional and advanced diesel combustion strategies.

Multitude Characterization and Prediction of DOE Advanced Biofuels Properties

Advanced multitude of experiments ranging from the liquid fuel to combustion are conducted on Co-OPTIMA fuels to aid the characterization of the fuels. The series of targeted experiments characterized Co-OPTIMA fuel spray atomization, flame topology, flame speed, autoignition, volatility, viscosity, soot/coking, and compatibility. The fuels are selected and prioritized based on input from national lab members. The research characterized and predicted biomass-based, low greenhouse gas fuels and blends combustion, autoignition, and physical properties of mixtures of identified compounds at engine-relevant conditions, in particular those properties that blend non-linearly. The main challenge of Co-OPTIMA is the evaluation of a variety of biofuels and blends in all the reaction conditions that might be encountered in new high-efficiency engines. Despite the improved high-throughput experimental techniques, it seems unlikely that all of the performance metrics could be measured for all relevant petroleum derived, bio-derived molecules and mixtures, and reaction conditions. A series of targeted experiments ranging from the liquid fuel to the combustion process is required, and to extract the maximum information from each experiment. These targeted experiments evaluated how a specific fuel will perform in an engine. The series of targeted experiments are as follows: (a) Spray Atomization, Vaporization and Droplet Formation (b) Combustion Flame and Local Fuel/Air Image-Based Measurements (c) Laminar Flame Speed Measurements (d) Autoignition and Soot Measurements (e) Synchrotron Coupled Fundamental Autoignition Experiments (f) Fuel Coking and Hot Surface Deposit g) Fuel Volatility Measurements (h) Viscosity Measurements (i) Seal Flexible Fuel Compatibility These experimental processes provide an essential pathway for the prediction of fuel behaviors in engines and systematic process for fuel down select.

Cloud Condensation Nuclei Hygroscopicity Value-Added Product Report

The purpose of the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) user facility’s cloud condensation nuclei hygroscopicity parameter (AOSCCNSMPSKAPPA) value-added product (VAP) is to calculate the hygroscopicity parameter, kappa, to quantify the ability of aerosols to activate into cloud water droplets. The hygroscopicity parameter is often used to model the cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) activity of atmospheric aerosols of different sizes and compositions, providing additional insight on the influence of aerosols on climate. Laboratory experiments show that the kappa values for highly hygroscopic aerosols, such as salts and sulfates, vary from 0.5 to 1.4 (Petters and Kreidenweis 2007). For organic compounds they are observed to vary between 0.01 and 0.5. For non-hygroscopic aerosols, such as soot, kappa values are very close to zero. Ambient aerosols are complex mixtures of organic and inorganic compounds and previous observations indicate that kappa values typically vary from 0.05 to 0.9 (Petters and Kreidenweis 2007).

Instantaneous Three-Dimensional Temperature Measurements via Ultrafast Laser Spectroscopy with Structured Light

Detonations and flames are characterized by three-dimensional (3D) temperature fields, yet state-of- the-art temperature measurement techniques yield information at a point or along a line. The goal of the research documented here was to combine ultrafast laser spectroscopy and structured illumination to deliver an unprecedented measurement capability—three-dimensional, instantaneous temperature measurements in a gas-phase volume. To achieve this objective, different parts of the proposed technique were developed and tested independently. Structured illumination was used to image particulate matter (soot) in a turbulent flame at multiple planes using a single laser pulse and a single camera. Emission spectroscopy with structured detection was demonstrated for emission- based measurements of explosives with enhance dimensionality. Finally, an instrument for multi- planar laser-based temperature measurement technique was developed. Structured illumination techniques will continue to be developed for multi-dimensional and multi-parameter measurements. These new measurement capabilities will be important for heat transfer and fluid dynamic research areas.

Complementary Study of Radiative Heat Transfer and Flow Physics from Moderate-scale Hydrocarbon Pool Fire Simulations

As part of the Advanced Simulation and Computing Verification and Validation (ASCVV) program, a 0.3-m diameter hydrocarbon pool fire with multiple fuels was modeled and simulated. In the study described in this report, systematic examination was performed on the radiation model used in a series of coupled Fuego/Nalu simulations. A calibration study was done with a medium-scale methanol pool fire and the effect of calibration traced throughout the radiation model. This analysis provided a more detailed understanding of the effect of radiation model parameters on each other and on other quantities in the simulations. Heptane simulation results were also examined using this approach and possible areas for further improvement of the models were identified. The effect of soot on radiative losses was examined by comparing heptane and methanol results.

Predictive Large-Eddy Simulation of Supercritical-Pressure Reactive Flows in the Cold Ignition Regime

This report describes a one-year study performed under DOE sponsorship, continuing the investigation of high-pressure turbulent reactive flows. The interest is in the effect of the chemical species distribution in high-pressure turbulent flows in the presence of strong temperature gradients as would occur during reactions in realistic flows. The prime example of such flows are boundary layers in which the wall is at a lower temperature than that of the fluid, as would be the case in Diesel engines. Previous DOE BES work in the program further highlighted the importance of the boundary layer as a configuration for fundamental studies: soot formation in boundary layers is still a problem poorly understood and depends on the availability of particular chemical species at that location, and when boundary layer Large Eddy Simulations results were compared with measurements, the agreement was unfavorable, showing that this important ‘unit’ problem is not well understood. To understand this unit problem, modeling and Direct Numerical Simulations of this unit problem were conducted for the simplest possible multispecies system, that is a binary-species system. The results discovered a new phenomenon, that is, Soret effect induced uphill diffusion. The far-reaching implication is that through an imposed wall/fluid temperature difference it is possible to control the distribution of the species in the boundary layer. Because the results have been documented in one paper published in the refereed literature, and also in conference papers, this final report is in the form of an Executive Summary succinctly describing the results and putting them in perspective with respect to existing information. The refereed and conference papers published are individually listed as Appendices and attached to this report. One manuscript is still in progress and is thus not listed.
