Assembly and Pre-Loading Specifications for the Series Production of the Nb 3 Sn MQXFA Quadrupole Magnets for the HL-LHC

We report the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) Project is planning to install 16 cold-masses made with Nb 3 Sn quadrupole magnets in the LHC Interaction Regions to significantly increase its luminosity. Half of these cold masses are fabricated at BNL, FNAL, and LBNL under the US Accelerator Research Program (AUP). Each cold mass includes two identical Nb 3 Sn quadrupole magnets, called MQXFA with a magnetic length of 4.2 m. Currently, the AUP project has completed the fabrication and test of the first 5 pre-series magnets, and is working on the following 16 magnets for the series production. The brittleness and strain sensitivity of the Nb 3 Sn superconducting material requires a careful definition of the allowable maximum stress in the windings during magnet assembly and pre-load, and a tight control of their variation within the whole coil length. Therefore, a series of assembly and pre-load specifications have been defined with the goals of minimizing the risk of conductor degradation and providing the mechanical support required to reach the nominal current during powering. In this paper we present the specifications defined for the MQXFA magnets and applied during the different assembly phases and during the pre-load process of the first 5 pre-series magnets.

Assessment of Training Performance, Degradation and Robustness of Paraffin-Wax Impregnated Nb 3 Sn Demonstrator Under High Magnetic Field

In the context of high-energy physics, the use of Nb 3 Sn superconducting magnets as a cost-effective and reliable technology depends on improvements in the following areas: long development and manufacturing cycles, conductor degradation after thermal cycling, long training, as well as a demonstration in accelerator magnets with a beam aperture of the full potential of modern Nb 3 Sn conductors. In short, performance, robustness, and cost are the three issues to be addressed. The Magnet Development project (MagDev) of the Swiss Accelerator Research and Technology initiative (CHART) at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) aims to contribute to the solutions to each of these issues, re-thinking the manufacturing and design process. Here in our program, every innovation is to be validated by means of a panoply of fast-turnaround tools: from non-powered and powered samples and coils, tested under background field, to low-field subscale magnets and high field short prototypes. This work presents one element in this panoply of R&D vehicles: a stress-managed Nb 3 Sn coil called BigBOX, impregnated with paraffin wax, and tested, through a collaboration with the Magnet Development Program of the United States (US-MDP), in the background field of Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL)’s common coils dipole DCC17.

Nb₃Sn Coating of Twin Axis Cavity for SRF Applications

The twin axis cavity with two identical accelerating beams has been proposed for energy recovery linac (ERL) applications. Nb₃Sn is a superconducting material with a higher critical temperature and a higher critical field as compared to Nb, which promises a lower operating cost due to higher quality factors. Two niobium twin axis cavities were fabricated at JLab and were proposed to be coated with Nb₃Sn. Due to their more complex geometry, the typical coating process used for basic elliptical cavi-ties needs to be improved to coat these cavities. This development advances the current coating system at JLab for coating complex cavities. Two twin axis cavities were coated recently for the first time. This contribution dis-cusses initial results from coating of twin axis cavities, RF testing and witness sample analysis with an overview of the current challenges towards high performance Nb₃Sn coated twin axis cavities.

SN 2018fif: The Explosion of a Large Red Supergiant Discovered in Its Infancy by the Zwicky Transient Facility

High-cadence transient surveys are able to capture supernovae closer to their first light than ever before. Applying analytical models to such early emission, we can constrain the progenitor stars' properties. Here, we present observations of SN 2018fif (ZTF 18abokyfk). The supernova was discovered close to first light and monitored by the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) and the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory. Early spectroscopic observations suggest that the progenitor of SN 2018fif was surrounded by relatively small amounts of circumstellar material compared to all previous cases. This particularity, coupled with the high-cadence multiple-band coverage, makes it a good candidate to investigate using shock-cooling models. We employ the SOPRANOS code, an implementation of the model by Sapir & Waxman and its extension to early times by Morag et al. Compared with previous implementations, SOPRANOS has the advantage of including a careful account of the limited temporal validity domain of the shock-cooling model as well as allowing usage of the entirety of the early UV data. We find that the progenitor of SN 2018fif was a large red supergiant with a radius of $R={744.0}_{-128.0}^{+183.0}\,{R}_{\odot }$ and an ejected mass of ${M}_{\mathrm{ej}}={9.3}_{-5.8}^{+0.4}\,{M}_{\odot }$. Our model also gives information on the explosion epoch, the progenitor's inner structure, the shock velocity, and the extinction. The distribution of radii is double-peaked, with smaller radii corresponding to lower values of the extinction, earlier recombination times, and a better match to the early UV data. If these correlations persist in future objects, denser spectroscopic monitoring constraining the time of recombination, as well as accurate UV observations (e.g., with ULTRASAT), will help break the extinction/radius degeneracy and independently determine both.

Measuring an Off-center Detonation through Infrared Line Profiles: The Peculiar Type Ia Supernova SN 2020qxp/ASASSN-20jq

In this study, we present and analyze a near-infrared (NIR) spectrum of the underluminous Type Ia supernova SN 2020qxp/ASASSN-20jq obtained with NIRES at the Keck Observatory, 191 days after B-band maximum. The spectrum is dominated by a number of broad emission features, including the [Fe ιι] at 1.644 μm, which is highly asymmetric with a tilted top and a peak redshifted by ≈2000 km s -1 . In comparison with 2D non-LTE synthetic spectra computed from 3D simulations of off-center delayed-detonation Chandrasekhar-mass (M ch ) white dwarf (WD) models, we find good agreement between the observed lines and the synthetic profiles, and are able to unravel the structure of the progenitor’s envelope. We find that the size and tilt of the [Fe ιι] 1.644 μm profile (in velocity space) is an effective way to determine the location of an off-center delayed-detonation transition (DDT) and the viewing angle, and it requires a WD with a high central density of ~4 × 10 9 g cm -3 . We also tentatively identify a stable Ni feature around 1.9 μm characterized by a “pot-belly” profile that is slightly offset with respect to the kinematic center. In the case of SN 2020qxp/ASASSN-20jq, we estimate that the location of the DDT is ~0.3M WD off center, which gives rise to an asymmetric distribution of the underlying ejecta. We also demonstrate that low-luminosity and high-density WD SN Ia progenitors exhibit a very strong overlap of Ca and 56 Ni in physical space. This results in the formation of a prevalent [Ca ιι] 0.73 μm emission feature that is sensitive to asymmetry effects. Our findings are discussed within the context of alternative scenarios, including off-center C/O detonations in He-triggered sub-M Ch WDs and the direct collision of two WDs. Snapshot programs with Gemini/Keck/Very Large Telescope (VLT)/ELT-class instruments and our spectropolarimetry program are complementary to mid-IR spectra by the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST).

The BTSbot-nearby Discovery of SN 2024jlf: Rapid, Autonomous Follow-up Probes Interaction in an 18.5 Mpc Type IIP Supernova

We present observations of the Type IIP supernova (SN) SN 2024jlf, including spectroscopy beginning just 0.7 days (∼17 hr) after first light. Rapid follow-up was enabled by the new BTSbot-nearby program, which involves autonomously triggering target-of-opportunity requests for new transients in Zwicky Transient Facility data that are coincident with nearby (D < 60 Mpc) galaxies and identified by the BTSbot machine learning model. Early photometry and nondetections shortly prior to first light show that SN 2024jlf initially brightened by >4 mag day −1 , quicker than ∼90% of Type II SNe. Early spectra reveal weak flash ionization features: narrow, short-lived (1.3 < τ[days] < 1.8) emission lines of Hα, He II , and C IV . Assuming a wind velocity of v w = 50 km s −1 , these properties indicate that the red supergiant progenitor exhibited enhanced mass loss in the last year before explosion. We constrain the mass-loss rate to $1{0}^{-4}\lt \dot{M}\,[{M}_{\odot }\,{\mathrm{yr}}^{-1}]\lt 1{0}^{-3}$ by matching observations to model grids from two independent radiative hydrodynamics codes. BTSbot-nearby automation minimizes spectroscopic follow-up latency, enabling the observation of ephemeral early-time phenomena exhibited by transients.

Is the remnant of SN 1006 Crablike

The solid-state spectrometer on the Einstein Observatory and the GSFC cosmic X-ray spectrometer on OSO 8 have observed the X-ray spectrum of SN 1006. The data can be well represented by a power-law model with alpha = 1.2, similar to the spectrum of the Crab Nebula. This is in contrast to the radio and X-ray maps of SN 1006 which show a shell structure more typical of SNR with thermal X-ray emission. The X-ray spectrum is suggestive of nonthermal synchrotron emission, raising the possibility that the remnant of SN 1006 contains a source of relativistic electrons.

The X-ray spectrum of SN 1006

The supernova (SN) of A.D. 1006 represents the brightest in recorded history. The X-ray observations of its remnant appear to be full of puzzles. The present paper has the objective to reevaluate published X-ray data on SN 1006, using detailed nonequilibrium spectral computations and a self-consistent hydrodynamic SNR model. In a summary of the main conclusions, it is pointed out that an observed power-law continuum can be understood as mainly free-free emission from a reverse shock into SN ejecta with an initially uniform density profile. The spectral index is correctly predicted by such a model. Most of the continuum is produced by fully ionized gas in the dense outer layers of ejecta. The X-ray spectrum is not consistent with a solar composition or a uniform composition but is consistent with a layered composition of ejecta containing carbon on the outside, and processed heavy elements on the inside. There is no difficulty in including a large mass of iron.

Detection of a very bright source close to the LMC supernova SN 1987A

High angular resolution observations of the supernova in the Large Magellanic Cloud, SN 1987A, have revealed a bright source separated from the SN by approximately 60 mas with a magnitude difference of 2.7 at 656 nm (H-alpha). Speckle imaging techniques were applied to data recorded with the CfA two-dimensional photon counting detector on the CTIO 4 m telescope on March 25 and April 2 to allow measurements in H-alpha on both nights and at 533 nm and 450 nm on the second night. The nature of this object is as yet unknown, though it is almost certainly a phenomenon related to the SN.

Optical observations of SN 1987D in UGC 7370

This paper presents optical photometry and spectroscopy of SN 1987D, a Type Ia supernova in the nearby galaxy UGC 7370, during the period immediately subsequent to its discovery. The distance modulus of the galaxy, independently determined by the redshift and the Tully-Fisher (1977) relation, is 32.3 + or - 1.0. The maximum brightness of SN 1987D was V about 13.2 and occurred on April 18, 1987, + or - 4 days; the absolute luminosity is about 0.6 mag brighter than the average for SNe Ia. The spectrum of SN 1987D is typical of SNe Ia, but the expansion velocity (9600 km/s) is considerably lower than average.

Near infrared spectroscopy of SN 1987A using the Kuiper Airborne Observatory

An IR spectrum (1.5-3.0 microns) of SN 1987A was obtained on UT April 16.3, 1987 with the University of Arizona Fourier-transform spectrometer on the NASA Kuiper Airborne Observatory. The dominant spectral features were a double-peaked P-alpha emission line and a sharp absorption edge in the continuum at 2.7 microns, both of which would have been obscured by strong telluric H2O absorptions at ground-based observatories. These IR features relate to models of the SN shell and to the role of dust in SN.

The Progenitor of SN 1987A

Spatially resolved IUE spectra (1150 to 2000 A) taken at the position of SN 1987A in March 1987 show that the 12th mag B3 I star Sk -69 deg 202 disappeared. Only the fainter companion stars (Star 2 and Star 3) are present near the site of the supernova. It is concluded that Sk -69 deg 202 exploded to produce SN 1987A. The known characteristics of Sk -69 deg 202 are consistent with the interpretation that the progenitor was a relatively compact star, having a high-velocity low-density stellar wind prior to the outburst. Recent IUE spectra of SN 1987A (May 1988) show no evidence that Sk -69 deg 202 still exists inside the expanding ejecta.

Macrosegregation in undercooled Pb-Sn eutectic alloys

A novel technique resulting in large undercoolings in bulk samples (23g) of lead-tin eutectic alloy is described. Samples of eutectic composition were processed with undercoolings ranging from 4 to 20 K and with cooling rates varying between 0.04 to 4 K/sec. The final macrostructure of undercooled samples depends on both the initial undercooling of the melt and the cooling rate. Gravity-driven segregation is found to increase with increasing undercooling. A eutectic Pb-Sn alloy undercooled at 20 K and cooled at 4 K/sec had a composition of about Pb-72 wt pct Sn at the top and 55 pct Sn at the bottom. Macrosegregation in these undercooled lead-tin eutectic alloys is shown to be primarily due to a sink/float mechanism caused by the difference in density of the solid and liquid phases and the undercooling and nucleation behavior of the alloy.

SN 1961V - An extragalactic ETA Carinae analog

Spectra of the site of the unique type V supernova SN 1961V in NGC 1058 and of two nearby H II regions have been obtained. Broad H-alpha emission with a luminosity of 2 x 10 to the 36th ergs/s is detected at the position, so that SN 1961V becomes the first historical extragalactic object classified as a supernova to be optically recovered. The characteristics and origin of the high-excitation H II regions of the site are discussed. It is argued that SN 1961V was not a supernova, but an exaggerated Eta Carinae-type outburst of a very massive, evolved star near the end of core hydrogen burning.

Illuminating a red supergiant wind around SN 1987A

A recently discovered light echo at a radius of about 9 arcsec from SN 1987A is interpreted as the result of a circumstellar shell at a radius of 4.5 pc from the SN. The shell may have its origin in the deceleration of the pre-SN red supergiant wind by the pressure of the surrounding medium. The required pressure is p/k = about 1000 per cu cm K. The echo is predicted to expand and contract over the next 30 yr with a declining surface brightness and a broadening of its width. Colors of the echo compared to those of the larger echoes may show differences in the wavelength dependence of scattering of the circumstellar grains compared to interstellar grains.

Electronic state and superconductivity of YBa2Cu3-xO7-y (M=Al,Zn and Sn) systems

A series of YBa2Cu(3-x)MxO(7-y) (M=Al,Zn and Sn) single phase samples were prepared, and the measurements of the crystal structure, oxygen content, electric resistivity, thermoelectric power, Mossbauer spectrum, XPS and superconductivity were performed. The experimental results of X ray powder diffraction, Mossbauer spectrum and oxygen content show that the Zn(2+) and the Al(3+) occupy the Cu(2) site in Cu-O planes and the Cu(1) site in Cu-O chains respectively, but the Sn(4+) occupies both the Cu(1) sites. As regards the properties in superconducting state, both the Zn(2+) and the Al(3+) depress T(sub c) strongly, but the Sn(4+) does not. As for the electronic transport properties in normal state, the system doped by Al(3+) displays a rapid increase of resistivity and some electron localization-like effects, and the thermoelectric power enhances obviously; the series contained Zn(2+) almost shows no changes of electric resistivity but the sign of the thermoelectric power is reversed. Other results are given and briefly discussed.

Model atmospheres for SN 1987A and the distance to the Large Magellanic Cloud

A code which simultaneously solves the non-LTE equations of statistical equilibrium and the time-independent equation of radiation transport in an expanding atmosphere is applied to analyze the spectrum of SN 1987A. The behavior of a model atmosphere in which the density structure is a power-law function of radius has been studied and compared closely with SN 1987A data. This model atmosphere is used to derive corrections to the expanding photosphere method for determining distances to supernovae. The distance to the Large Magellanic Cloud derived from SN 1987A observations by this 'custom yardstick' is 49 + or - 6 kpc in excellent accord with results for RR Lyrae stars and for Cepheids. This empirical test of the expanding photosphere method provides the basis for hope that it may make a significant contribution to the extragalactic distance scale at cosmologically interesting distances.

A model of the pre-Sedov expansion phase of supernova remnant-ambient plasma coupling and X-ray emission from SN 1987A

This paper examines the mechanism responsible for coupling supernova (SN) remnant to the ambient medium during the pre-Sedov or the so-called free expansion phase, immediately following the progenitor explosion. A theory is developed for the interaction of an SN piston with the ambient medium during the pre-Sedov phase. The possibility of X-ray production by the high-speed portion of the piston during this phase is investigated. The relevant observations of high-energy emissions from the SN 1987A, including the X-ray spectrum, luminosity, and temporal development, are considered. It is shown that the commonly assumed snowplow model for SNR evolution is valid, because of the action of a variety of collisionless two-stream instabilities that permit the coupling of the ambient plasma with SNR.
