Impact of K-Optimization on Trap Concentration in (Ag,Cu)(In,Ga)Se 2 Solar Cells

Recent progress has been made in improving efficiency in Cu(In,Ga)Se 2 (CIGS) absorbers with steady increases in peak efficiency. One way this has been achieved is by adding Ag to CIGS (ACIGS) to achieve higher V OC . However, these efficiencies are still well below the Shockley-Queisser efficiency limit, and traps acting as recombination centers and compensating centers are one thing limiting the solar efficiency. Past research in CIGS has shown that alkali treatment can improve the efficiency and metastability problems in CIGS, but less is understood about the role of alkali treatments in ACIGS. Here, we investigate the impact of potassium in ACIGS through its impact on trap incorporation and minority carrier lifetime. The samples in this study were grown in a roll-to-roll coater with Mo, ACIGS, CdS, and ZnO structure. Both cells were grown identically except the second (K-optimized) cell was grown with increased K-doping of the Mo contact and was more Cu-poor near the surface to optimize the K profile. This resulted in an efficiency increase from 16.8% to 18.7% for the K-optimized cell, which was mostly due to a 65 mV V OC increase. The doping profile showed a 2X increase in acceptor concentration of the K-optimized cell (2.5×10 15 cm -3 ) which suggests that the K was better incorporated into the ACIGS after these optimizations. To characterize the traps in these cells, deep level transient and optical spectroscopy were used. The DLOS measurements showed an EV+0.98 eV trap whose concentration was reduced 10X in the K-optimized cell (4×10 14 cm -3 ). This is consistent with previous results from the alkali treatment in CIGS, which also showed a decrease in near-conduction band trap concentration [1], but the reduction was larger than previous studies possibly indicating the combination of K and Cu-poor surface may both have aided in reducing the EV+0.98 eV trap concentration. The other primary trap is the mid-gap trap (EV+0.58 eV), which was quantified using DLTS. Its concentration decreased from 9×10 13 cm -3 to 4×10 13 cm -3 in the K-optimized sample, which is a 2X reduction. Previous studies have shown this trap is likely an efficient recombination center [2], which makes sense because it is near mid-gap. This trap has also been associated with V OC instability and reduction, so reducing this trap concentration is essential to achieve high V OC and cell efficiency. To help confirm this association, time-resolved photoluminescence measurements have shown in this sample set and a previous study that the minority carrier lifetime (19 ns baseline to 56 ns K-optimized) and this EV+0.56 eV trap concentration are inversely proportional, which would be expected for a recombination-limited carrier lifetime. The K optimization of ACIGS results in significantly improved cell efficiency and reduced trap concentrations that correlate with the improved material and electrical properties. We will report on this and the impact of the K optimization on the cell metastability.

Economics of Crop Rotations With and Without Carinata for Sustainable Aviation Fuel Production in the SE United States

In 2019, the aviation sector in the United States emitted 255 million metric tons of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emissions, i.e., about five percent of the total domestic CO 2 emissions from the energy sector. The sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) derived from carinata (Brassica carinata) could reduce CO 2 emissions of the aviation sector in the United States. Therefore, it is important to estimate changes in farm economics with and without carinata for ascertaining its production feasibility. In this context, the current study first assesses a combination of 12 popular rotations of corn, cotton, peanut, and soybean with winter crops of winter wheat and carinata in South Georgia over 4 years. Then, the net present values (NPVs) of 292 feasible cropping systems over 4 years are calculated. Finally, this study develops a risk model for ascertaining the probability distributions of NPVs for selected cropping systems subject to uncertainties related to prices and yields of summer and winter crops. Carinata in the corn-corn-soybean rotation has the highest NPV ($\$$2,996/ha). The least risky rotation is cotton-cotton-peanut, with a 58.9% probability of a positive NPV. Carinata can decrease the risk level of crop rotations by 8.1%, only if a contract price of $\$$440.9/t is offered. Therefore, a risk averse, risk neutral, or risk acceptant farmer can potentially include carinata in the rotation. Overall, carinata would increase the profitability of farm operations and decrease risk in the SE United States, and therefore, a high likelihood exists, that farmers would adopt it for meeting the growing demand for SAF in the United States.

M PX 3 van der Waals magnets under pressure ( M = Mn, Ni, V, Fe, Co, Cd; X = S, Se)

van der Waals antiferromagnets with chemical formula MPX 3 (M = V, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cd; X = S, Se) are superb platforms for exploring the fundamental properties of complex chalcogenides, revealing their structure-property relations and unraveling the physics of confinement. Pressure is extremely effective as an external stimulus, able to tune properties and drive new states of matter. In this review, we summarize experimental and theoretical progress to date with special emphasis on the structural, magnetic, and optical properties of the MPX 3 family of materials. Under compression, these compounds host inter-layer sliding and insulator-to-metal transitions accompanied by dramatic volume reduction and spin state collapse, piezochromism, possible polar metal and orbital Mott phases, as well as superconductivity. Some responses are already providing the basis for spintronic, magneto-optic, and thermoelectric devices. We propose that strain may drive similar functionality in these materials.

Helimagnetism in MnBi 2 Se 4 Driven by Spin-Frustrating Interactions Between Antiferromagnetic Chains

We report the magnetic properties and magnetic structure determination for a linear-chain antiferromagnet, MnBi 2 Se 4 . The crystal structure of this material contains chains of edge-sharing MnSe 6 octahedra separated by Bi atoms. The magnetic behavior is dominated by intrachain antiferromagnetic (AFM) interactions, as demonstrated by the negative Weiss constant of –74 K obtained by the Curie–Weiss fit of the paramagnetic susceptibility measured along the easy-axis magnetization direction. The relative shift of adjacent chains by one-half of the chain period causes spin frustration due to interchain AFM coupling, which leads to AFM ordering at TN = 15 K. Neutron diffraction studies reveal that the AFM ordered state exhibits an incommensurate helimagnetic structure with the propagation vector k = (0, 0.356, 0). The Mn moments are arranged perpendicular to the chain propagation direction (the crystallographic b axis), and the turn angle around the helix is 128°. The magnetic properties of MnBi2Se4 are discussed in comparison to other linear-chain antiferromagnets based on ternary mixed-metal halides and chalcogenides.

PbE (E = S, Se) Colloidal Quantum Dot-Layered 2D Material Hybrid Photodetectors

Hybrid lead chalcogenide (PbE) (E = S, Se) quantum dot (QD)-layered 2D systems are an emerging class of photodetectors with unique potential to expand the range of current technologies and easily integrate into current complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS)-compatible architectures. Herein, we review recent advancements in hybrid PbE QD-layered 2D photodetectors and place them in the context of key findings from studies of charge transport in layered 2D materials and QD films that provide lessons to be applied to the hybrid system. Photodetectors utilizing a range of layered 2D materials including graphene and transition metal dichalcogenides sensitized with PbE QDs in various device architectures are presented. Figures of merit such as responsivity (R) and detectivity (D*) are reviewed for a multitude of devices in order to compare detector performance. Finally, a look to the future considers possible avenues for future device development, including potential new materials and device treatment/fabrication options.

Development of ion-implantation confined, shallow mesa stripe (Pn,Sn)Te/Pb(Te,Se) DH laser diodes

Preliminary results of a program to develop ion implantation confined, shallow mesa stripe (Pb,Sn)Te laser diodes are presented. The practicality of using a shallow mesa stripe to produce single mode laser output and to increase the single mode tuning range are demonstrated. The first results of p-type ion implantation in the lead-tin salts are also reported. It is shown that sodium and lithium both can be used to convert n-type Pb(Te,Se) to p-type. The implant and anneal procedures are described, and electrical characteristics of Li-implanted layers are presented.

Spectrum of sodiumlike selenium - Se XXIV

High-resolution spectra of Se XXIV have been obtained with a 3-m grazing-incidence spectrograph. Thin plastic foils coated with selenium were irradiated with four or eight beams of the OMEGA laser in a line-focus configuration. Spectrograms were obtained by viewing the plasma axially. Prominent in the spectra were the 3s-3p and 3p-3d transitions in the 150-240-A region and the transitions nl-(n + 1)l-prime with n = 3, 4 in the 24-80-A region. The energy levels and ionization limit derived from the measured wavelengths are also presented.

Relative populations of excited levels within the ground configuration of Si-like Cu, Zn, Ge and Se ions

Populations of 3p2 1D2, 3P1, 3P2 levels in Si-like Cu, Zn, Ge, and Se ions have been deduced from the measurements of absolute intensities of magnetic dipole transitions within the 3s2 3p2 ground configuration. The measured population ratios are compared with theoretical calculations based on the distorted-wave approximation for the electron collisions and a semiclassical approximation for the proton collisions. The observed deviation from the statistical distribution for the excited-level populations within the ground configuration along the silicon isoelectronic sequence is in agreement with theoretical prediction.

Automatic cataloguing and characterization of Earth science data using SE-trees

In the future, NASA's Earth Observing System (EOS) platforms will produce enormous amounts of remote sensing image data that will be stored in the EOS Data Information System. For the past several years, the Intelligent Data Management group at Goddard's Information Science and Technology Office has been researching techniques for automatically cataloguing and characterizing image data (ADCC) from EOS into a distributed database. At the core of the approach, scientists will be able to retrieve data based upon the contents of the imagery. The ability to automatically classify imagery is key to the success of contents-based search. We report results from experiments applying a novel machine learning framework, based on Set-Enumeration (SE) trees, to the ADCC domain. We experiment with two images: one taken from the Blackhills region in South Dakota; and the other from the Washington DC area. In a classical machine learning experimentation approach, an image's pixels are randomly partitioned into training (i.e. including ground truth or survey data) and testing sets. The prediction model is built using the pixels in the training set, and its performance is estimated using the testing set. With the first Blackhills image, we perform various experiments achieving an accuracy level of 83.2 percent, compared to 72.7 percent using a Back Propagation Neural Network (BPNN) and 65.3 percent using a Gaussain Maximum Likelihood Classifier (GMLC). However, with the Washington DC image, we were only able to achieve 71.4 percent, compared with 67.7 percent reported for the BPNN model and 62.3 percent for the GMLC.

Effects of an Applied Magnetic Field on the Directional Solidification of Hg(1-x)Zn(x)Se Alloys

Directionally solidified Hg(0.9)Zn(0.1)Se alloys were studied as an alternative to HgCdTe for the detection of electromagnetic radiation because of predicted improvements in lattice stability. Several boules were grown using a modified Bridgman-Stockbarger method and in an applied magnetic field. Axial compositional profiles showed mass transfer was primarily diffusion controlled. Radial compositional variations were greatly reduced when solidification occurred in an applied magnetic field. Microstructural characteristics and dislocation etch pit densities were greatly improved over HgTe based alloys. The extreme importance of processing conditions on defect generation was illustrated by comparing ampoule configurations and thermal profiles.

Microstructural Development of Directionally Solidified Hg(1-x)Zn(x)Se Alloys

Hg(1-x)Zn(x)Se alloys have been studied as an alternative to Hg(1-x)Cd(x)Te for the detection of electromagnetic radiation, because the shorter ZnSe and HgSe bonds have been predicted to improve lattice stability. Several ingots with x = 0.1 were directionally solidified using a modified Bridgman-Stockbarger method; one was grown in an applied magnetic field, which greatly reduced radial compositional variations. A method was developed to reduce wetting. This, combined with the convex liquid-solid interface shape, produced boules that were single crystalline after growing about 3.5 cm. Observed surface features indicated ampoule wetting was eliminated using a graphite getter. Microstructural characteristics were greatly improved over HgCdTe alloys. In six boules, a total of only one twin was observed. A method for polishing and producing dislocation etch pits was developed for these alloys, revealing dislocation etch pit densities one to two orders of magnitude less than HgTe-based alloys. A kink in the thermal profile during processing of one boule generated more dislocations than did lattice mismatch due to compositional variations. This alloy has improved microstructural properties and resistance to dislocation formation compared with similar II-VI alloys.

Explicit Von Neumann Stability Conditions for the c-tau Scheme: A Basic Scheme in the Development of the CE-SE Courant Number Insensitive Schemes

As part of the continuous development of the space-time conservation element and solution element (CE-SE) method, recently a set of so call ed "Courant number insensitive schemes" has been proposed. The key advantage of these new schemes is that the numerical dissipation associa ted with them generally does not increase as the Courant number decre ases. As such, they can be applied to problems with large Courant number disparities (such as what commonly occurs in Navier-Stokes problem s) without incurring excessive numerical dissipation.
