Site partitioning for distributed redundant disk arrays

Distributed redundant disk arrays can be used in a distributed computing system or database system to provide recovery in the presence of temporary and permanent failures of single sites. In this paper, we look at the problem of partitioning the sites into redundant arrays in such way that the communication costs for maintaining the parity information are minimized. We show that the partitioning problem is NP-complete and we propose two heuristic algorithms for finding approximate solutions.

Modeling of the partitioning of reactive odd nitrogen in the lower stratosphere using aircraft measurements of NOy, NO, and other trace species

The objective of this research was to gain a more thorough understanding of the atmospheric processes which control the partitioning of species within the reactive nitrogen (NO(y)) reservoir in the lower stratosphere. This understanding is crucial to predicting ozone loss in the stratosphere. NO(y) is defined as NO + NO2 + HNO3 + N2O5 + ClONO2 + HO2NO2 + NO3 + particulate nitrate. The research focuses on deriving the partitioning among these species using the combined set of measurements from the NASA ER-2 aircraft during recent missions designed to study stratospheric ozone depletion.

Siderophile elements in the upper mantle of the Earth: New clues from metal-silicate partition coefficients

New, precise data on the solubilities of Ni, Co, and Mo in silicate melts at 1400 C and fO2 from IW to IW-2 are presented. The results suggest NiO, CoO as stable species in the melt. No evidence for metallic Ni or Co was found. Equilibrium was ensured by reversals with initially high Ni and Co in the glass. Mo appears to change oxidation state at IW-1, from MoO3 to MoO2. Metal-silicate partition coefficients calculated from these data and recent data on Pd indicate similar partition coefficients for Pd and Mo at the conditions of core formation. This unexpected result constrains models of core formation in the Earth.

Computer code for controller partitioning with IFPC application: A user's manual

A user's manual for the computer code for partitioning a centralized controller into decentralized subcontrollers with applicability to Integrated Flight/Propulsion Control (IFPC) is presented. Partitioning of a centralized controller into two subcontrollers is described and the algorithm on which the code is based is discussed. The algorithm uses parameter optimization of a cost function which is described. The major data structures and functions are described. Specific instructions are given. The user is led through an example of an IFCP application.

Partitioning of centralized integrated flight/propulsion control design for decentralized implementation

The notion of partitioning a centralized controller into a decentralized, hierarchical structure suitable for integrated flight/propulsion control (IFPC) implementation is discussed. A systematic procedure is developed for determining partitioned airframe and engine subsystem controllers (subcontrollers), with the desired interconnection structure, that approximate the closed-loop performance and robustness characteristics of a given centralized controller. The procedure is demonstrated by application to IFPC design for a short take-off and vertical landing (STOVL) aircraft in the landing-approach-to-hover-transition flight phase.

FNAS phase partitions

Project NAS8-36955 D.O. #100 initially involved the following tasks: (1) evaluation of various coatings' ability to control wall wetting and surface zeta potential expression; (2) testing various methods to mix and control the demixing of phase systems; and (3) videomicroscopic investigation of cell partition. Three complementary areas were identified for modification and extension of the original contract. They were: (1) identification of new supports for column cell partition; (2) electrokinetic detection of protein adsorption; and (3) emulsion studies related to bioseparations.

Orientation and velocity dependence of the nonequilibrium partition coefficient

Monte Carlo simulations based on a Spin-1 Ising Model for binary alloys have been used to investigate the non-equilibrium partition coefficient (k(sub neq)) as a function of solid-liquid interface velocity and orientation. In simulations of Si with a second component k(sub neq) is greater in the [111] direction than the [100] direction in agreement with experimental results reported by Azlz et al. The simulated partition coefficient scales with the square of the step velocity divided by the diffusion coefficient of the secondary component in the liquid.

Fast Multilevel Implementation of Recursive Spectral Bisection for Partitioning Unstructured Problems

If problems involving unstructured meshes are to be solved efficiently on distributed-memory parallel computers, the meshes must be partitioned and distributed across processors in a way that balances tile computational load and minimizes communication. The recursive spectral bisection method (RSB) has been shown to be very effective for such partitioning problems compared to alternative methods, but RSB in its simplest form is expensive. Here a multilevel version of RSB is introduced that attains about an order-of-magnitude improvement in run time on typical examples.

Rare Earth Element Partition Coefficients from Enstatite/Melt Synthesis Experiments

Enstatite (En(80)Fs(19)Wo(01)) was synthesized from a hypersthene normative basaltic melt doped at the same time with La, Ce, Nd, Sm, Eu, Dy, Er, Yb and Lu. The rare earth element concentrations were measured in both the basaltic glass and the enstatite. Rare earth element concentrations in the glass were determined by electron microprobe analysis with uncertainties less than two percent relative. Rare earth element concentrations in enstatite were determined by secondary ion mass spectrometry with uncertainties less than five percent relative. The resulting rare earth element partition signature for enstatite is similar to previous calculated and composite low-Ca pigeonite signatures, but is better defined and differs in several details. The partition coefficients are consistent with crystal structural constraints.

The Budget and Partitioning of Stratospheric Chlorine During the 1997 Arctic Summer

Volume mixing ratio profiles of HCl, HOCl, ClNO3, CH3Cl, CFC-12, and CFC-11, CCl4, HCFC-22, and CFC-113 were measured simultaneously from 9 to 38 km by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory MkIV Fourier Transform Infrared solar absorption spectrometer during two balloon flights from Fairbanks, Alaska (64.8 N), on May 8 and July 8, 1997. The altitude variation of total organic chlorine (CCl(sub y)), total inorganic chlorine (Cl(sub y)), and the nearly constant value (3.7 +/- 0.2 ppbv) of their sum (Cl(sub TOT)) demonstrates that the stratospheric chlorine species available to react with O3 are supplied by the decomposition of organic chlorinated compounds whose abundances are well quantified. Measured profiles of HCl and ClNO3 agree well with profiles found by photochemical model (differences < 10% for altitudes below 35 km) constrained by various other constituents measured by MkIV. The production of HCl by ClO + OH plays a relatively small role in the partitioning of HCl and ClNO3 for the sampled air masses. However, better agreement with the measured profiles of HCl and ClNO3 is obtained when this source of HCl is included in the model. Both the measured and calculated [ClNO3]/[HCl] ratios exhibit the expected near linear variation with [O3](sup 2)/[CH4] over a broad range of altitudes. MkIV measurements of HCl, ClNO3, and CCl(sub y) agree well with ER-2 in situ observations of these quantities for directly comparable air masses. These results demonstrate good understanding of the budget of stratospheric chlorine and that the partitioning of inorganic chlorine is accurately described by photochemical models that employ JPL97 reaction rates and production of HCl from ClO + OH for the environmental conditions encountered: relatively warm temperatures, long periods of solar illumination, and relatively low aerosol surface areas.

A New Approach to Parallel Dynamic Partitioning for Adaptive Unstructured Meshes

Classical mesh partitioning algorithms were designed for rather static situations, and their straightforward application in a dynamical framework may lead to unsatisfactory results, e.g., excessive data migration among processors. Furthermore, special attention should be paid to their amenability to parallelization. In this paper, a novel parallel method for the dynamic partitioning of adaptive unstructured meshes is described. It is based on a linear representation of the mesh using self-avoiding walks.

Inorganic Chlorine Partitioning in the Summer Lower Stratosphere: Modeled and Measured [ClONO2/HCl] During POLARIS

We examine inorganic chlorine (Cly) partitioning in the summer lower stratosphere using in situ ER-2 aircraft observations made during the Photochemistry of Ozone Loss in the Arctic Region in Summer (POLARIS) campaign. New steady state and numerical models estimate [ClONO2]/[HCl] using currently accepted photochemistry. These models are tightly constrained by observations with OH (parameterized as a function of solar zenith angle) substituting for modeled HO2 chemistry. We find that inorganic chlorine photochemistry alone overestimates observed [ClONO2]/[HCl] by approximately 55-60% at mid and high latitudes. On the basis of POLARIS studies of the inorganic chlorine budget, [ClO]/[ClONO2], and an intercomparison with balloon observations, the most direct explanation for the model-measurement discrepancy in Cly partitioning is an error in the reactions, rate constants, and measured species concentrations linking HCl and ClO (simulated [ClO]/[HCl] too high) in combination with a possible systematic error in the ER-2 ClONO2 measurement (too low). The high precision of our simulation (+/-15% 1-sigma for [ClONO2]/[HCl], which is compared with observations) increases confidence in the observations, photolysis calculations, and laboratory rate constants. These results, along with other findings, should lead to improvements in both the accuracy and precision of stratospheric photochemical models.

Improved Multi-Partition Method for Line-Based Iteration Schemes

Regular 3-dimensional multi-partitioning has been shown to be an efficient domain decomposition method for the parallelization of ADI-type algorithms on MIMD architectures. This paper discusses further improvements that can be made to the scheme that increase the granularity and reduce the communication density. These improvements, which are illustrated by simulation and parallel benchmark results, make multi-partitioning the method of choice on systems with relatively poor communication capabilities, such as networks of workstations, or on massively parallel machines with very fast processors, such as the IBM SP2.

Dynamic Load Balancing For Grid Partitioning on a SP-2 Multiprocessor: A Framework

Computational requirements of full scale computational fluid dynamics change as computation progresses on a parallel machine. The change in computational intensity causes workload imbalance of processors, which in turn requires a large amount of data movement at runtime. If parallel CFD is to be successful on a parallel or massively parallel machine, balancing of the runtime load is indispensable. Here a framework is presented for dynamic load balancing for CFD applications, called Jove. One processor is designated as a decision maker Jove while others are assigned to computational fluid dynamics. Processors running CFD send flags to Jove in a predetermined number of iterations to initiate load balancing. Jove starts working on load balancing while other processors continue working with the current data and load distribution. Jove goes through several steps to decide if the new data should be taken, including preliminary evaluate, partition, processor reassignment, cost evaluation, and decision. Jove running on a single IBM SP2 node has been completely implemented. Preliminary experimental results show that the Jove approach to dynamic load balancing can be effective for full scale grid partitioning on the target machine IBM SP2.

Number Partitioning via Quantum Adiabatic Computation

We study both analytically and numerically the complexity of the adiabatic quantum evolution algorithm applied to random instances of combinatorial optimization problems. We use as an example the NP-complete set partition problem and obtain an asymptotic expression for the minimal gap separating the ground and exited states of a system during the execution of the algorithm. We show that for computationally hard problem instances the size of the minimal gap scales exponentially with the problem size. This result is in qualitative agreement with the direct numerical simulation of the algorithm for small instances of the set partition problem. We describe the statistical properties of the optimization problem that are responsible for the exponential behavior of the algorithm.
