Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE), Far Detector Technical Design Report (Volume II: DUNE Physics)

The Physics volume of the DUNE far detector (FD) Technical Design Report (TDR) presents the science program of DUNE. Within, we describe the array of identified scientific opportunities and key goals. Crucially, we also report our best current understanding of the capability of DUNE to realize these goals, along with the detailed arguments and investigations on which this understanding is based. In the context of the complete set of DUNE TDR volumes, a central role for this volume is to document the scientific basis underlying the conception and design of the LBNF/DUNE experimental configurations. As a result, it is the description of DUNE’s experimental capabilities that constitutes the bulk of the document. Key linkages between requirements for successful execution of the physics program and primary specifications of the experimental configurations are drawn and summarized. This document also serves a wider purpose as a statement on the scientific potential of DUNE as a central component within a global program of frontier theoretical and experimental particle physics research. Thus, the presentation also aims to serve as a resource for the particle physics community at large. In this chapter, the scientific goals, the methodologies utilized to obtain sensitivity projections, the corresponding results for selected elements of the scientific program, and the demands placed on the experiment design and performance are presented in summary form. Together with the two chapters that follow, this summary establishes the context for the detailed descriptions specific to each area of research that comprise the remaining chapters.

Michel Electron Selection with SPINE for DUNE Far Detector Simulation

Michel electrons are a valuable input for particle detector calibration due to their consistent kinetic energy distribution. This report details the evaluation of a Michel electron identification method's application to simulated data from the DUNE (Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment) far detector. This method, which relies on the neural network-based particle classification software SPINE (Scalable Particle Imaging with Neural Embeddings), was developed and calibrated using simulated data for the SBND (Short-Baseline Neutrino Detector) experiment before being applied to simulated DUNE data from a 1x2x6 subset of far detector modules.

Search for two neutrino double electron capture of 124 Xe and 126 Xe in the full exposure of the LUX detector

Two-neutrino double electron capture is a process allowed in the Standard Model of Particle Physics. This rare decay has been observed in $^{78}$Kr, $^{130}$Ba and more recently in $^{124}$Xe. In this publication we report on the search for this process in $^{124}$Xe and $^{126}$Xe using the full exposure of the Large Underground Xenon (LUX) experiment, in a total of of 27769.5~kg-days. No evidence of a signal was observed, allowing us to set 90\% C.L. lower limits for the half-lives of these decays of $2.0\times10^{21}$~years for $^{124}$Xe and $1.9\times10^{21}$~years for $^{126}$Xe.

Low energy neutrino detection with a compact water-based liquid scintillator detector

In this study, the conceptual design and physics simulations of a near-field Water-based Liquid Scintillator (WbLS) detector placed 100 m from the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant (ANPP), currently under construction and aiming at being Turkey’s first nuclear power plant, is presented. The ANPP is an excellent opportunity for neutrino studies and the development of an R &D program for neutrino detectors in Turkey. The Reactor Neutrino Experiments of Turkey (RNET) program includes a compact detector with a 2.5-ton volume of WbLS and a ~ 30% photo-coverage, and the program is planned to be expanded with a medium-size 30-ton detector that will be an international testbed for WbLS and new detector technologies through low energy neutrino studies. In the following, the focus will be on the smaller ~2.5 ton detector, instrumented with 8-in. high quantum efficiency PMTs and two layers of cosmic veto paddles, covering all sides of the detector, to track and veto cosmic particles. Inverse Beta Decay (IBD) events from electron anti-neutrinos generated in the reactor core are simulated using the RAT-PAC simulation package and several liquids with different percentages of Liquid Scintillator (LS) and Gadolinium (Gd) are investigated.

Event-by-event direction reconstruction of solar neutrinos in a high light-yield liquid scintillator

The direction of individual B 8 solar neutrinos has been reconstructed using the SNO + liquid scintillator detector. Prompt, directional Cherenkov light was separated from the slower, isotropic scintillation light using time information, and a maximum likelihood method was used to reconstruct the direction of individual scattered electrons. A clear directional signal was observed, correlated with the solar angle. The observation was aided by a period of low primary fluor concentration that resulted in a slower scintillator decay time. This is the first time that event-by-event direction reconstruction in high light-yield liquid scintillator has been demonstrated in a large-scale detector. Perspectives for Measuring Neutrino Cross-Sections at Short Baseline Detectors (ICARUS and DUNE-PRISM-like Detector) and Their Implications for Precision Physics

Neutrino physics is rapidly advancing with current and future experiments promising high-statistics data, enabling unprecedented accuracy in measuring Standard Model (SM) parameters and providing crucial insights into neutrino-nucleus interactions. The ICARUS experiment, utilizing LAr TPC technology, is pivotal in this growth. As the far detector of the SBN program at Fermilab, ICARUS is set to investigate the neutrino anomalies observed in LSND and MiniBooNE and prepare for future long-baseline experiments like DUNE. Positioned along the BNB and 5.75°off-axis from the NuMI beamline, ICARUS benefits from numerous neutrino interactions, allowing for precise neutrino-argon nucleus cross-section measurements, which will benchmark future DUNE measurements. This work presents the prospects and progress in measuring the cross-section of the NuMI νµ CC inclusive channel in the ICARUS experiment. High-statistics data will also enable precise determinations of fundamental parameters like the weak mixing angle and the neutrino charge radius (NCR), crucial for testing the SM and exploring potential new physics. This work includes studies of future near detectors, such as DUNE-PRISM, which are sensitive to radiative corrections in neutrino-electron scattering. The DUNE-PRISM configuration allows for the analysis of different neutrino energy spectra, promising accurate NCR measurements with controlled systematic uncertainties.

Atmospheric neutrino oscillation analysis with neutron tagging and an expanded fiducial volume in Super-Kamiokande I–V

We present a measurement of neutrino oscillation parameters with the Super-Kamiokande detector using atmospheric neutrinos from the complete pure-water SK I–V (April 1996–July 2020) dataset, including events from an expanded fiducial volume. The dataset corresponds to 6511.3 live days and an exposure of 484.2 kiloton-years. Measurements of the neutrino oscillation parameters Δ⁢𝑚$^2_{3⁢2}$, sin 2 ⁡𝜃 2⁢3 , sin 2⁡ 𝜃 1⁢3 , 𝛿 CP , and the preference for the neutrino mass ordering are presented with atmospheric neutrino data alone, and with constraints on sin 2 ⁡𝜃 1⁢3 from reactor neutrino experiments. Our analysis including constraints on sin 2 ⁡𝜃 1⁢3 favors the normal mass ordering at the 92.3% level.

SAND - System for on-Axis Neutrino Detection - in the DUNE Near Detector Complex

The DUNE experiment aims to precisely measure the long baseline neutrino oscillation parameters. The DUNE Far Detector consists of four liquid argon time-projection chambers (total LAr mass of 17 kton for each cryostat), that will be installed at the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) in South Dakota, 1300 km from the proton beam target. The Near Detector complex, located at Fermilab, is fundamental for limiting the systematic uncertainties, due to the neutrino/antineutrino flux and to the cross-section. It comprises three complementary detectors: ND-Lar, ND-Gar and SAND (System for on-Axis Neutrino Detection). ND-Lar and ND-Gar can move off-axis, while SAND is the only detector permanently on-axis, whose primary goal is to monitor the beam and to measure the flux. In this talk, the SAND design and the expected performances will be described together with its role within the Near Detector complex for the DUNE physics program.

Characterization of the scintillation time response of liquid argon detectors for dark matter search

The scintillation time response of liquid argon has a key role in the discrimination of electronic backgrounds in dark matter search experiments. However, its extraordinary rejection power can be affected by various detector effects such as the delayed light emission of TetraPhenyl Butadiene, the most commonly used wavelength shifter, and the electric drift field applied in Time Projection Chambers. Herein, we characterized the TetraPhenyl Butadiene delayed response and the dependence of the pulse shape discrimination on the electric field, exploiting the data acquired with the ARIS, a small-scale single-phase liquid argon detector exposed to monochromatic neutron and gamma sources at the ALTO facility of IJC Lab in Orsay.

Feasibility study to use neutron capture for an ultralow energy nuclear-recoil calibration in liquid xenon

The feasibility of an ultra-low energy nuclear-recoil measurement in liquid xenon using neutron capture is investigated for a small (sub-kilogram) liquid xenon detector that is optimized for a high scintillation gain, and a pulsed neutron source. Further, the measurement uses the recoil energies imparted to xenon nuclei during the de-excitation process following neutron capture, where promptly emitted γ cascades can provide the nuclei with up to 0.3 keV nr of recoil energy due to conservation of momentum. A successful calibration of scintillation photon and ionization electron yields below this energy will contribute to a greater sensitivity for liquid xenon experiments in searches for light WIMPs.

Spatial and temporal evaluations of the liquid argon purity in ProtoDUNE-SP

Liquid argon time projection chambers (LArTPCs) rely on highly pure argon to ensure that ionization electrons produced by charged particles reach readout arrays. ProtoDUNE Single-Phase (ProtoDUNE-SP) was an approximately 700-ton liquid argon detector intended to prototype the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) Far Detector Horizontal Drift module. It contains two drift volumes bisected by the cathode plane assembly, which is biased to create an almost uniform electric field in both volumes. The DUNE Far Detector modules must have robust cryogenic systems capable of filtering argon and supplying the TPC with clean liquid. This paper will explore comparisons of the argon purity measured by the purity monitors with those measured using muons in the TPC from October 2018 to November 2018. A new method is introduced to measure the liquid argon purity in the TPC using muons crossing both drift volumes of ProtoDUNE-SP. For extended periods on the timescale of weeks, the drift electron lifetime was measured to be above 30 ms using both systems. A particular focus will be placed on the measured purity of argon as a function of position in the detector.
