Local synthesis and tooth contact analysis of face-milled spiral bevel gears

A new approach is proposed for the local synthesis of spiral bevel gears. The approach provides contact at the mean contact point with the desired deviation of the transmission error function by a predesigned parabolic function. The orientation of the contact path on the gear tooth surface and the length of the major axis of the instantaneous contact ellipse are also included in the analysis. A tooth contact analysis (TCA) computer program was developed to simulate meshing and contact of the gear tooth surfaces. A numerical example of the process is given.

Comparison between field mill and corona point instrumentation at Kennedy Space Center - Use of these data with a model to determine cloudbase electric fields

A novel coronal current-determining instrument is being used at NASA-KSC which overcomes previous difficulties with wind sensitivity and a voltage-threshold 'deadband'. The mounting of the corona needle at an elevated location reduces coronal and electrode layer space-charge influences on electric fields, rendering the measurement of space charge density possible. In conjunction with a space-charge compensation model, these features allow a more realistic estimation of cloud base electric fields and the potential for lightning strike than has previously been possible with ground-based sensors.

Milling and mechanical alloying of inorganic nonmetallics

The versatility of high energy grinding for instigating mechanochemical reactions in inorganic systems has been studied. High-energy grinding can be used to produce amorphous carbon from synthetic graphite and some forms of natural graphite. Elemental sulfur can be amorphized by prolonged energy grinding. The presence of iron resulting from wear of the grinding media strongly affects phase transformations of alphaFe2O3 and mechanochemical reactions of this phase with ZnO and NiO. Data obtained confirm that low-temperature mechanochemical method is a robust process route for production of a wide range of materials.

Cyclic oxidation resistance of a reaction milled NiAl-AlN composite

Based upon recent mechanical property tests a NiAl-AlN composite produced by cryomilling has very attractive high temperature strength. This paper focuses on the oxidation resistance of the NiAl-AlN composite at 1473 and 1573 K as compared to that of Ni-47Al-0.15Zr, one of the most oxidation resistant intermetallics. The results of cyclic oxidation tests show that the NiAl-AlN composite has excellent properties although not quite as good as those of Ni-47Al-0.15Zr. The onset of failure of the NiAl-AlN was unique in that it was not accompanied by a change in scale composition from alumina to less protective oxides. Failure in the composite appears to be related to the entrapment of AlN particles within the alumina scale.

Computerized Design and Analysis of Face-Milled, Uniform Tooth Height, Low-Noise Spiral Bevel Gear Drives

A new method for design and generation of spiral bevel gears of uniform tooth depth with localized bearing contact and low level of transmission errors is considered. The main features of the proposed approach are as follows: (1) the localization of the bearing contact is achieved by the mismatch of the generating surfaces. The bearing contact may be provided in the longitudinal direction, or in the direction across the surface; and (2) the low level of transmission errors is achieved due to application of nonlinear relations between the motions of the gear and the gear head-cutter. Such relations may be provided by application of a CNC machine. The generation of the pinion is based on application of linear relations between the motions of the tool and the pinion being generated. The relations described above permit a parabolic function of transmission errors to be obtained that is able to absorb almost linear functions caused by errors of gear alignment. A computer code has been written for the meshing and contact of the spiral bevel gears with the proposed geometry. The effect of misalignment on the proposed geometry has also been determined. Numerical examples for illustration of the proposed theory have been provided.

Ion beam mill etch depth monitoring with nanometer-scale resolution

A method for measuring conductance of a material real-time during etching/milling includes providing a fixture having a socket for receiving the material. The socket is attached to a printed circuit board (PCB) mounted on one side of a plate that has at least one opening for providing ion beam access to the material sample. Conductive probes extend from the other side of the PCB to contact and span a target area of the material. A measurement circuit in electrical communication with the probes measures the voltage produced when a current is applied across the material sample to measure changes in electrical properties of the sample over time.
