Development and Testing of an Integrated Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) Treatment and Rare Earth/Critical Mineral Plant

The overall objective of this project was to design, construct, and test a pilot-scale continuous process for efficiently treating acid mine drainage (AMD) while producing rare earth element/critical mineral (REE/CM) concentrates. The process technology evaluated in this project included two distinct operations: 1. an upstream pre-concentration unit that treats raw AMD to environmentally compliant discharge standards while capturing an REE/CM preconcentrate, and 2. a downstream REE purification process that further enriches the pre-concentrate while producing mixed or partially separated rare earth oxides (REOs). The project team members successfully completed all of the proposed goals of the project and advanced the technology readiness levels (TRL) of the constituent operations to TRL 7 for the upstream concentration unit (full-scale system demonstration) and TRL 6 for the downstream purification process (pilot-scale demonstration).

Unrealized Critical Lanthanide Extraction from Sea Algae Mining (UNCLE SAM): Domestic production of critical minerals from seawater

The UNCLE-SAM project, under the Biotechnologies to Ensure a Robust Supply of Critical Materials for Clean Energy program, examined the biomining applications of seaweeds for sustainable, domestic production of critical mineral feedstocks. The ocean is a vast reserve of mineralogical wealth including rare earth elements (REEs) and platinum group metal (PGMs). These elements, categorized as “critical minerals”, are used in telecommunication devices, lasers, LED lighting, turbine generators, electric car motors, jet engine alloys, and many other applications. These critical elements are increasingly vital to a thriving, efficient and sustainable society. However, only a few countries in the global market currently produce and export REEs, leading to potential geopolitical supply disruptions. Marine macroalgae, often referred to as seaweeds, bioconcentrate critical minerals from seawater, including REEs and PGMs. Marine algae cultivation can generate a significant amount of biomass with minimal freshwater, fertilizer, and land requirements. In summary, the UNCLE-SAM project successfully evaluated the technological feasibility for marine macroalgal cultivation as a feedstock for critical minerals, explored the biological capacity of different seaweeds to provide economically relevant domestic mineral production, assessed processing techniques for thermal co-conversion of seaweeds into renewable fuel and mineral feedstocks, and executed techno-economic and lifecycle assessments for identifying the most critical gaps in our current understanding to move the technology into commercially relevant deployment. Further development of this technology could transform the bioproduct and REE mining industries and catalyze the development of a more sustainable future.

Neutron Dosimetry for the Colorado School of Mines (CSM 16-10584) Irradiation in ATR

PNNL project 74242 involves the analysis of neutron fluence monitors irradiated in the Advanced Test Reactor (ATR) at Idaho National Laboratory in accordance with MPO 00236287 and Statement of Work No. 17370, Rev. 0, PNNL Analysis of NSUF Flux and Melt Wire Capsules. This report is for the Colorado School of Mines (CSM 16-10584) experiment which was conducted in position B5 of the ATR. Three other irradiations included in the scope of work are reported separately. The neutron fluence monitors were prepared by PNNL and loaded into the CSM assemblies at INL prior to irradiation. Following irradiation, the capsules were returned to PNNL for analysis. The neutron dosimetry capsules were opened, the flux wires were removed for gamma analysis, and the measured activities were used to determine the activation rates for various activation products. Following suitable corrections, the measured activation rates were used to adjust calculated neutron spectra at 12 fluence monitor locations. The adjusted neutron spectra were then used to determine displacement per atom (dpa) and gas production for irradiated materials.

Synthesizing Lithium Sorbents Using Acid Mine Drainage Solids

In this study, we prepared HMO from coal mine drainage (CMD) solids and examined the practicability of recovering Li from oil and gas produced waters and geothermal brines. We aim to innovate high-value added products from the existing extract REEs and CMs processing chain of legacy byproducts associated with coal production. CMD solids, which are precipitates collected from exhausted limestone gravels of passive CMD treatment beds, are enriched in rare earth elements (REEs) and other critical minerals (CMs), and therefore, considered as a viable alternative source for REEs/CMs to supply the Nation’s demands. A patented extraction process developed by NETL (TREE) has been demonstrated as a cost-effective and efficient approach to recover REEs/CMs from CMD solids. Here, we selected residuals of CMD solids from the TREE process that are enriched in manganese (Mn) (>20% w/w) and successfully prepared LMO using a solid-state method modified from Yoshizuka et al. (2002).

An Exploratory Data Mining Investigation for Constructing a Publicly Sourced Dataset of Foreign Hypersonic Tests

This document details a data mining exercise that resulted in an exploratory dataset of publicly reported foreign (non-US) hypersonic vehicle test events. Using a combination of targeted English language searches and country-specific queries, the study aggregates information from digital news media, official press releases, and social media posts. The resulting list of events captures the publicly available accounts of foreign hypersonic tests, although it does not represent an exhaustive record. Limitations such as inconsistent reporting, translation challenges, and the inherently provisional nature of open-source data are acknowledged. This dataset serves as an initial reference point for further inquiries into high-speed atmospheric phenomena and may facilitate future efforts to correlate these events with geophysical measurements.

Recovery and Refining of Rare Earth Elements from Lignite Mine Wastes

The University of North Dakota (UND), in collaboration with a comprehensive team of technical, business and host-site partners, built on prior technology development to complete a front-end engineering and design (FEED) and business planning study to recover and refine rare earth elements (REE) and critical minerals (CM) from North Dakota (ND) lignite mine wastes. The end of project goal was to have an investment quality project and a committed team ready to commercialize the proposed technologies in a future construction and operations phase.

Energy-Efficient Selective Removal of Metal Ions from Mining Influenced Waters (MIW) Using H-Bonded Organic-Inorganic Framework (HOIFS) (CRADA Final Report)

The work developed a hydrogen-bonded organic–inorganic framework (HOIF), specifically zinc imidazole salicylaldoxime supramolecule (ZIOS), for selective Cu removal and recovery from acidic mining-impacted waters (AMD), with emphasis on scalable synthesis, membrane integration, durability in real AMD (RAMD), mechanistic understanding, and recovery/regeneration pathways. This research breaks new ground in selective resource recovery from AMD waters – no other sorbents can operate reliably in this pH range. This project is unique in what it has delivered and is of general use to the public for projects relating to critical materials recovery.
