Simulation of the prompt energization and transport of radiation belt particles during the March 24, 1991 SSC

We model the rapid (about 1 min) formation of a new electron radiation belt at L about or = 2.5 that resulted from the Storm Sudden Commencement (SSC) of March 24, 1991 as observed by the Combined Release and Radiation Effects Satellite (CRRES) satellite. Guided by the observed electric and magnetic fields, we represent the time-dependent magnetospheric electric field during the SSC by an asymmetric bipolar pulse that is associated with the compression and relaxation of the Earth's magnetic field. We follow the electrons using a relativistic guiding center code. The test-particle simulations show that electrons with energies of a few MeV at L greater than 6 were energized up to 40 MeV and transported to L about or = 2.5 during a fraction of their drift period. The energization process conserves the first adiabatic invariant and is enhanced due to resonance of the electron drift motion with the time-varying electric field. Our simulation results, with an initial W(exp -8) energy flux spectra, reproduce the observed electron drift echoes and show that the interplanetary shock impacted the magnetosphere between 1500 and 1800 MLT.

Analysis of airborne antenna systems using geometrical theory of diffraction and moment method computer codes

Computer codes have been developed to analyze antennas on aircraft and in the presence of scatterers. The purpose of this study is to use these codes to develop accurate computer models of various aircraft and antenna systems. The antenna systems analyzed are a P-3B L-Band antenna, an A-7E UHF relay pod antenna, and traffic advisory antenna system installed on a Bell Long Ranger helicopter. Computer results are compared to measured ones with good agreement. These codes can be used in the design stage of an antenna system to determine the optimum antenna location and save valuable time and costly flight hours.

On the novel 3-D neutron transport kinetic tRAPID algorithm and its validation

The Real-time Analysis for Particle-transport and In-situ Detection (RAPID) Code System, based on the Multi-stage Response-function Transport (MRT) methodology, allows for real-time simulation of nuclear systems based on 3-D continuous-energy particle transport. RAPID's steady-state (criticality) neutron transport algorithm is based on the Fission Matrix (FM) method, and has been extensively verified and validated against computational benchmarks and experiments. This paper introduces the novel 3-D time-dependent transport algorithm that has been implemented into the code, tRAPID, and its validation using the JSI TRIGA Mark-II reactor. tRAPID accurately and efficiently calculates neutron kinetics parameters (such as β{sub eff}, l{sub eff} , Λ, α{sub Rossi}) and 3-D time-dependent neutron fission source distribution and neutron importances for both prompt and delayed neutrons. tRAPID is used to simulate a rod insertion experiment performed at the JSI TRIGA Mark-II reactor, during which signals from four fission chambers at four different locations in the core were collected. The results demonstrate how tRAPID is capable of calculating detailed and accurate results with only a minimal use computational resources and time.

A method for predicting failure statistics for steady state elevated temperature structural components

This paper presents the initial development of a high temperature life prediction method that accounts for the variability in the material properties of Grade 91 steel. The method accounts for material variability by fitting a variable 3-parameter Weibull distribution to experimental rupture data and accounts for the variability of creep deformation on the steady-state stresses via a Monte Carlo approach. To ensure reasonable computational times, the model represents the material as an extremely viscous Stokes fluid with a non-Newtonian viscosity, therefore solving the stress relaxation problem with a steady, static, instead of transient, analysis. Furthermore, the complete statistical analysis combines this model for creep deformation with a probabilistic model for creep rupture to evaluate the probability of premature failure for a set of sample problems, comparing the predicted failure statistics to the design life predicted by the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code rules.

Simulating a pulsed-power-driven plasma with ideal MHD

We describe a simple practical numerical method for simulating plasma driven within a vacuum chamber by a pulsed power generator. Typically, in this type of simulation, the vacuum region adjacent to the plasma is approximated as a highly resistive, light fluid; this involves computationally expensive solvers describing the diffusion of the magnetic field through this fluid. Instead, we provide a recipe for coupling pulsed power generators to the magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) domain by approximating the perfectly insulating vacuum as a light, perfectly conducting, inviscid MHD fluid and discuss the applicability of this counter-intuitive technique. This much more affordable ideal MHD representation is particularly useful in situations where a plasma exhibits interesting three-dimensional phenomena, either due to the design of the experiment or due to developing instabilities. We verified that this coupling recipe works by modeling an exactly solvable flux compression generator as well as a self-similar Noh-like solution and demonstrated convergence to the theoretical solution. We also showed examples of simulating complex three-dimensional pulsed power devices with this technique. We release our code implementation to the public.

Upgrade of the Lyman-alpha diagnostic system on DIII-D for main chamber edge neutral studies

The LLAMA (Lyman Alpha Measurement Apparatus) pinhole camera diagnostic had previously been deployed on DIII-D to measure radial profiles of the Lyman-α (Ly-α) deuterium neutral line brightness across the plasma boundary in the lower chamber to infer neutral deuterium density and ionization rate profiles. This system has recently been upgraded with a new diagnostic head, named ALPACA, that also encloses two pinhole cameras and duplicates the LLAMA views in the upper chamber. Similar to LLAMA, ALPACA provides two times 20 lines of sight, viewing the plasma edge on the inboard and outboard sides with a radial resolution of ~2.5 cm (FWHM) and an effective time resolution of ~1 ms that allows for the investigation of inter-ELM dynamics. The extended Ly-α system provides better coverage to study neutrals in experiments with various plasma shapes utilizing both the upper and lower divertors. Furthermore, post-campaign calibration of the LLAMA diagnostic has successfully been demonstrated for the first time. This was facilitated by various upgrades to the calibration set-up and detailed measurements of the emissivity distribution of the Ly-α calibration source using a pinhole collimator. It was found that the sensitivity of the inboard LLAMA pinhole camera was reduced by a factor of 2.0 ± 0.2 over the course of six months of plasma operation in 2021. In conclusion, the upgraded Ly-α system, equipped with improved absolute calibration, will provide key input for neutral fueling and pedestal particle transport studies and for 2D edge transport code validation on the DIII-D tokamak.

The Value of Diversity in the Renewable Energy Industry and Research Community

Part of creating a successful solar industry is developing a capable workforce. It has been repeatedly shown that organizations and companies are more productive when they have diverse and inclusive cultures. The solar industry in the U.S. performs well in some aspects (non-white workforce, positive work environment) but drastically under-performs in many others. We discuss these metrics and how this impacts the renewable energy industry and the solar research community. We highlight some initial actions which are necessary to begin to remediate these deficiencies, such as demographic tracking, recruiting strategies, and mentoring. We also present the historical and ongoing efforts to improve the diversity and inclusion of the Photovoltaic Specialists Conference, particularly through the work of this year’s Diversity and Inclusion (D&I) oversight committee. This year’s D&I committee is implementing diversity tracking, a women’s lunch, a diversity lunch, childcare resources, pronouns on badges, gender-neutral restrooms, addressing accessibility issues, and publishing a diversity statement and code of conduct to the PVSC website.

Preliminary description of a new creep-fatigue design method that reduces over conservatism and simplifies the high temperature design process

The report provides the initial description of a new creep-fatigue design method for structural components in high temperature nuclear service. The new method is based on an integrated elastic-perfectly plastic (EPP) analysis and Simplified Model Test (SMT) approach that reduces over conservatism, improves the treatment of elastic follow up, and simplifies the design procedure, when compared with the current creep-fatigue design methods in ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code. Developing the design charts for the EPP-SMT design method requires extrapolating SMT test data as a function of hold time and follow up factor. The report develops the preliminary design charts for Alloy 617 at temperatures between 800°C and 950°C by combining two extrapolation approaches developed in a previous work. The report also presents a comparative analysis between the EPP-SMT design method and the current ASME creep-fatigue design methods by evaluating design life of two sample geometries under different loading conditions. Results from the comparative analysis verify the EPP-SMT design charts but suggest the requirement of additional test data in the low strain range regime for improving the extrapolation procedure that will further reduce the over conservatism in the creep-fatigue damage evaluation. The report also concludes that the EPP-SMT design procedure can account for effect of primary load on creep-fatigue life by using a fixed, bounding value of follow up in constructing the design charts. The conclusions to this report describe the future work required to complete this new design method so it can be codified through a nuclear Code Case.

Experience with a vectorized general circulation weather model on Star-100

A version of an atmospheric general circulation model was vectorized to run on a CDC STAR 100. The numerical model was coded and run in two different vector languages, CDC and LRLTRAN. A factor of 10 speed improvement over an IBM 360/95 was realized. Efficient use of the STAR machine required some redesigning of algorithms and logic. This precludes the application of vectorizing compilers on the original scalar code to achieve the same results. Vector languages permit a more natural and efficient formulation for such numerical codes.
