The ENDF/B-VIII.0 Compendium Volume I: Neutron Cross Section Plots

Version 8 of the Evaluated Nuclear Data File (ENDF/B-VIII.0) contains a wealth of nuclear data representing the most recent collection of evaluated neutron cross section measurements, isotopic radioactive decay, and much more. This Compendium has been prepared as a easily-navigable reference of the contents of the ENDF/B-VIII.0 library, while making no statement regarding the accuracy of those contents. The Compendium is split into four volumes.

ADPSM Learning Team Review 2015-001. NPI-7 Drum/POC Dropped – Leads to Improved Lifting

As part of the ADPSM Safety Improvement Plan, the WSST has established a subcommittee for a Learning Team. The purpose of a Learning Team is to transfer and communicate the information into operational feedback and improvement. We want to pay attention to the small things that go wrong because they are often early warning signals and may provide insight into the health of the whole system.

Fundamental Physics of Ferroelectrics 2019

The workshop “Fundamental Physics of Ferroelectrics 2019” took place in January 2019 at USF and hosted around 80 participants (from both US and overseas) 32 of whom were early career professionals (PostDocs and graduate students). This was a 2.5 day workshop with 8 invited presentations, 39 oral presentations, and 27 posters. It brought together experts in the area of ferroelectrics and related materials and allowed for interactions, collaborations and exchange of ideas and progress. The invited speakers were Jorge Iniguez (University of Luxembourg), Manila Songvilay (University of Edinburgh), James Scott (St. Andrews), David Singh (University of Missouri), Philippe Ghosez (Université de Liège), Marin Alexe (University of Warwick), Takeshi Egami (University of Tennessee), Sergey Vakhrushev (Ioffe Physical Technical Institute), and Karin Rabe (Rutgers University). The DOE funding was used (i) to provide awards for junior participants (graduate students and PostDocs): best oral presentations (1st, 2nd and 3rd places) and best poster presentations (1st, 2nd and 3rd places). First places in both categories $\$ $300, second places in both categories $\$ $250 and third places in both categories $\$ $200. Information about the awardees available at the conference website.

Getting things done onsite: Heat Source production never ramps down

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed many norms in the world and at LANL. During the rapid transition of sending many to work from home in March, some programs were deemed mission critical, with the expectation to continue driving their missions forward. One of those essential programs is Heat Source Technologies, a group within the Actinide Material Power & Processing (AMPP) Division at TA-55. Within the Associate Laboratory Directorate of Weapons Production (ALDWP), the group responsible for the Pu-238 heat sources continued their work nearly uninterrupted as many others made the mandatory transition to work remotely. This group, known as AMPP-1, Heat Source Technologies, works on the production line producing heat sources from Plutonium (Pu)-238, which is an essential mission for National Security. This group is comprised of nearly 90 employees and operates out of the TA-55 Plutonium Facility (PF-4 and PF-5) producing heat sources. Heat source production includes the operations that purify, process, and weld Pu-238 oxide into encapsulated heat sources that are essential for space and defense missions.

TA-55 Forensic Support Operations Cross-Training Exercise

As part of the annual FBI/LANL training schedule, a joint training exercise was conducted during the week of 10FEB2020 with FBI HEAT members and LANL Fissile Material Handlers (FMHs). The joint training exercise was conducted in a non-radiological area to reduce cost and ensure the test object would not be contaminated. The exercise test object was fabricated by LANL using surrogate materials to represent an object containing Special Nuclear Material (SNM). Working with Jim Blankenship and Kevin Swearingen, functional requirements of the test object included the following: unclassified, disassembly (to include screws), and moderately heavy. To meet the objectives, the test object was fabricated by welding a custom aluminum box (8” x 8” x 12”) with a lid which was secured by four (4) screws. The custom box housed a track and field shot put (16 lbs.) that was anchored by a hose clamp. The intent of the training was to disassemble the test object and conduct traditional forensic determinations on the parts. This lessons learned report documents all of the associated aspects related to the joint training effort.
